As the Tribune reported Sunday morning, Sen. Barack Obama's campaign has been trying to air its dirty laundry over the past several days. With that effort underway, it went on the offensive today on matters of ethics and disclosure.

In a midday conference call with reporters, Obama's chief strategist and communications director called on Sen. Hillary Clinton to release her post-White House tax records and other documents from her long public life.

"She is a veteran of non-disclosure," said David Axelrod, Obama's chief strategist.

Beside her tax returns, Axelrod and Robert Gibbs called on Clinton to release Senate earmark requests by her office, documents from the Clinton Library in Little Rock, Ark., and names of donors to the Clinton Foundation and the library.

"What is Sen. Clinton hiding and what is lurking in those documents?" Gibbs asked.

Axelrod suggested that Clinton is not yet fully vetted, a charged the New York senator and former first lady has made against the Illinois Democrat.

"The nominee will come under close scrutiny from the Republican Party," Axelrod said. "We need to know them before and not after this nominating fight is over."

But questions over Obama's former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, also continued to linger.

Asked whether Obama was aware of all of Wright's most controversial comments before they began to widely circulate on the Internet, Axelrod said no.

"He wasn't aware at the time Rev. Wright made these statements," Axelrod said. "He was made aware of some of them in the course of this campaign."

Axelrod said the debate over Wright, who recently retired from Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's South Side, has been painful for Obama. "He and his family remain part of this church community that they have been a part of for 20 years," Axelrod said.

Axelrod downplayed any potential damage to Obama's candidacy.

"These do not represent his views," Axelrod said. "I think this will pass, but we understand there is a lot of interest in it now."

Axelrod said Wright was pulled from the program in Springfield, Ill., when Obama announced his candidacy in February 2007, in part because it was a cold day. "We truncated the program," he said.

Pressed further, Axelrod acknowledged controversy surrounding Wright was a consideration, as has been previously reported. "We didn't want to expose him...make him a target and a distraction on a day Sen. Obama was going to announce his candidacy," he said.

Axelrod said Obama is a strong advocate for racial unity.

"I don't know anybody who has been a stronger force for reconciliation and understanding between people," he said. "I don't know anyone who has been more willing to speak out against hatred."

On the matter of unseated delegates from Michigan and Florida, Axelrod said Obama's campaign is not trying to "block anything," but wants a reasonable and fair process.

He added that Clinton's campaign tends to look at the U.S. flag and see "seven stars," a reference to the focus of her campaign on larger states. "We see 50," Axelrod said.

The truth is finally starting to come out and the "truth will set you free". America, wake up and smell the coffee. OB's not on the level on this or much else it seems. He only speaks the truth when he gets caught. How much more is lingering out there on this for the Republicans to use against him in the fall if, and that's a big "IF",he squirms past these revelations to the nomination. The Republicans will mop-up the floor with BO over this truely obvious connection with his pastor. Our country needs "US" to stand-up for her now. Our future lingers in the balance of the impending primaries & general election. We need a Pres. to restore our standing. We need Hillary, not inexperience & a questionable past, or Sen. more of the same, McCain.

what is hillary hiding?????????obama release a lot of his stuff.shwoing that he has nothing to hide.she should be pressured into doinh so.time to pay the piper.

If somebody has a questionable past it is Hillary. Believe me, the Republicans have more ammunition against Hillary than Barack. Let people be accountable on what they do and say rather than what their aunts, brothers, sisters, cousins, teachers, hairdressers, pastors etc say or do. Isn't that the American way?

I'm sorry. My taxes aren't done either. Does that make me a bad person? Yet. Apparently it is okay for my spiritual advisor to advocate singing God Damn America, for me not to put my hand on my heart when the Pledge is recited, and to dispense with wearing any pro-American symbols? If you had the tax liability of the Clintons, would you be paying any sooner than you HAVE to? Get a life. What are you going to want to know after April 15? What's in her stock portfolio?

this is what Obama should reveal: I'm not a Muslim, I'm long-time member of church with a pastor
who's my spiritual advisor who is an angry, anti-American racial
separatist who wants God to damn America!"

If we're truly claiming to be "fair and balanced" we must ask if we are examining the comments of the religious persons associated with the other candidates.

Why, for instance, was it completely off limits to view sermons delivered by Mike Huckabee? These were the man's own words, yet his sermons were strictly hands-off. Would not some be shocked by words delivered in the pulpit for his congregation's own consumption that claimed women should be subjugated to their husbands? Where was the outrage then?

Why not see videos of Mitt Romney's services? His church doctrine?

What about John McCain? Why are we not scouring the texts of sermons delivered in his church for something we find objectionable? It's there, and we would all be disgusted to see snippets of it replayed endlessly on Fox.

Or, as seems to be the case developing, are we holding Barack Obama to a different standard? Why do we disbelieve his commitment to this country so readily that we treat him as though he were not a "true American"? Do we distrust his name so deeply that we cannot comprehend the depths to which he loves this country? Why do we assume he cannot love his country as "we" do? Why do we presume that we have the right to delve into his church to find out more about a man who has made his tax returns, earmarks, business dealings, and life story completely public? He has been more open about his life than any other candidate, past or current, in this Presidential race, yet we continue to try to "find out" more about him. Why is that?

This has gone completely over the line. Privacy and freedom of religion dictates that enough is enough!

This man, self-made in the classical American style, has literally pulled himself up from his bootstraps, making his way with no aid from family or fortune. We must ask ourselves if we really mean it when we declare that All Men are Created Equal? We are certainly not treating this candidate equally. Apply the same tests to all, or to none.

And, for what it's worth, I'm white.

During the 90s, Republicans spent over four years and millions of taxpayers money digging Hillary's dirts but came out empty handed. With all the investigations Hillary went through in the past, I doubt she would have even consider running for presidency if she had anything to hide in her closet. On the otherhand, Senator Obama is mostly running his campaign on the basis of him having a good judgment and his ability to bring changes in America. However, both of his slogans appeares to be shattered during the recent days because of his long close association with his hate mongering minister and his inability to bring even a small change within the divisive philosophy of his church. If Senator Obama being a member of his church for 20 years can not even bring peace, harmony, compassion, and inclusiveness within the theme of his church gatherings then why even bother to express rhetorics to do all that if elected as a president!

He is the spiritual head of a church. There are PLENTY of things I would not want people to know or here that my Catholic priest has said, and then use those against me if I were to run for office. The Clinton's will stoop to any low to try and get back in the political sphere of power - and they're so OVER. People, be thankful he is running. His character and quality are a rare commodity in politics. Become educated on who he is as a man and then, as this person states, 'the truth will set you free'.

Given her actions and campaign tatics, Hillary Clinton is ready and willing to do anything to win the nomination, even if it means, destroying the Democratic Party and leaving the Party with a wounded prospective nominee, going into the November General election. I hope those of us who really care about this Party, are taking note and would prevent Hillary and Bill Clinton from destroying the Party, or causing it suffer major political losses in the Gerneral election, this November.

There are some on the fringe of the Democratic Party, who are pushing Hillary Clinton's candidacy in 2008. If we allow them to succeed, considering that she has not been playing fair in this campaign, the Democratic Party would be screwed for a very long time.

Here is the scenario:

First, most of Sen. Obama's supporters (of course, including yours truly), despise Hillary Clinton so much, they would either seat out the general election, or vote for John McCain.

Secondly, as a very divisive political figure, Hillary Clinton's candidacy, more than anything else, would mobilize the Republicans, to vote for John McCain.

Thirdly, the Republicans have so much dirt on Hillary and Bill Clinton 935 year worth of information on scandals and criminal investigations), that, come November 2008, Hillary Clinton's candidacy would have been significantly impaired.

I dare the DNC and the back-benchers in the Democratic Party, who have been more timid than the Gordon Brown's Prime-ministership in the U.K, and clumsier than the Canadian Embassy in the US, to make a mess of the Democratic Party's chances in the November 2008 election, by nominating Hillary Clinton! If the Party is stupid enough to allow Bill and Hillary Clinton and their dubious surrogates (every bloody one of them, no exceptions), the Presidency would not be the only thing Democrats would lose, they would also, lose many seats in the House, Senate, state and local elections in November.

Watch my words!

I could not have said it better myself
I was painded to hear the comments over and over on CNN( Clinton News Network)
About the postor
Only to stop and realize ..Clinton News Network was at it again
She will stoop to anythingSHe will NOT be the next President
The people are NOT moved!!!

Tax returns prove nothing as Obama knows. Any self-respecting millionaire (he's one too!) will have enough shell corporations and tax havens to park income to minimize the personal tax bite. I've worked long enough in the finance field to see first hand how things are often done to benefit someone personally on taxes vs the company, and what games can be played. Obama's pledge to run a positive uplifting campaign rings awfully hollow. Just more smear and innuendo - this is new politics?

Obama cannot win a general election, period. He may win California, Vermont and Massachusetts, but he will lose every red state, Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and, at this point, perhaps even New Jersey.

Why can't Hillary release her tax documents? She is the only one who has not. If she has nothing to hide just release them. The argument that Clinton will win the Big states is absurd. All of those Big states have a large Black population and if the Super Delagates vote to give the nomination to Hillary in spite of the elected delagates does any one really think she can expect any kind of a turnout for her? I really doubt it.

Friends: The Rev.story was leaked by McCain, it is turning out. But regardless - Even though Barack is an outstanding candidate, and altough most progressives are familiar with the type of stands the Rev Wright espoused, I don't think mainstream America is familiar enough to not be swayed by the unhealthy spin the Swiftboat GOP media i will give it.. Wright's comments plus Michelle's "finally something to be proud of in America" comment and whatever else they dig up will paint him as
a Panther type radical that it
will scar the electorate and throw tje election to McCain. Remember McGovern- he was a Dem darling too, and totally bombed in the election. This is the Obamabomb that has unfortunately winged this excellent people's representative for good. Linda K

If the Clintons get the primaries with their dirty tricks, I will vote for McCain.
I wish it is OBAMA, and I'll never vote for Hillary.

For someone with such great "judgement", he does not seem to be able to judge what anti-American racist speeches are when he's been sitting in a church every Sunday for 20 years. Nominating Obama is political suicide for the Dems now. Obama even named his book after his sermon. Put these things together with his wife saying America is a mean and fear-mongering place, and you have a losing candidate. Once again the Democrats have forfeited the white house.

linda: Actually the story was broke by Ronald Kessler for Newsmax, just in case veracity is important to you.

It may be thought Rezko was leaked by McCain. Maybe to have Clinton nominated because Mac can beat her in the general. Dont we want a candidate who can win the Whitehouse? At this point, does it matter which Dem? We dont want 100 years in Iraq or war in Iran now that the only Gen. standing in the way of a war in Iran has stepped down. We should be focusing on starting the Bush impeachment process so he cant start a war in Iran on his way out the door. I dont trust GW just dont trust him. Get him out now!

First off, you can't "leak" a story that's not a story at all, but rather A SPEECH THE MAN MADE IN A PUBLIC PLACE THAT WAS TAPED, second of all the McCain campaign has been busy raising money and travelling to visit our troops in Iraq.

If these "leaks" show us more of Wright's every day rhetoric I say bring them on. We the people have a right to know what a presidential candidate agrees with by continuing to be a member of such a church.

I have always thought Hillary Rodham Clinton character was suspect with me.

My mother always told me,tell me who you hand around with an I will tell you who you are.

Since Mrs. Clinton wants to play hardball with you, well my mother was right, after reading President Clintons most conroverial pardons covince me, that my decision to vote for you as our next president was correct.

I would advise your campaign advisors read this very interesting piece of information.

Unfortunately, I agree with Caleb that I feel this horrible dread and anger that we are again going to lose the election to the Republicans due to Obama's association with this church.

I would like to agree with Jennifer's analysis (that others' sermons and their leaders' sermons were not scrutinized so closely), and do agree with her point that it is unfair to look at him closer than everyone else.

The difference for me personally is that I always knew I would disagree with all of the aforementioned Republicans and the folks they associate with closely, and personally I am very disappointed to find out all of this about Obama's church. It's not "just his pastor", but someone he has looked to for close spiritual advisement. That is very different.

My parents attended a church for a while that had changed since they started with it -- became much more conservative. However, they didn't want to leave their friends, and it took them years to decide to leave. But, they never looked to the new conservative pastor for spiritual guidance or were closely associated with him.

Looking at the church's website, it disturbs me that he attends this church that is certainly not for unity of all peoples. It is seems to exude the kind of divisive reverse racism that I experienced while living in New Orleans. It is not helpful, and is not something I want in the leader of our country -- no more than I would want a white-centered person there. It is obvious that it is not only the senior pastor that holds some of these views, and though white, I am the farthest thing from a racist. My husband and I rejoiced when an African-American became the president of our former university -- I am for the empowerment of all people. I hope Obama is too, but I am definitely not sure anymore and very disappointed. I will vote for him if he gets the nomination, but I don't have any hope that we'll unseat the R's; I hope my dad can manage to not emigrate to Canada if that's the case....

I voted for Obama in the primaries, but now I actually wish Hillary would win b/c I don't think he has a chance in the regular election with this big problem. He didn't decide to distance himself soon enough -- what are we going to do????
