The presence of both Vice President Dick Cheney and Sen. John McCain in Baghdad today – indeed CNN’s John King reports their parties almost crossed paths in the old presidential palace of Saddam Hussein – will offer plenty of fodder for the Democrats portraying McCain’s candidacy as “McBush,’’ a third term for President Bush.
Cheney, who made a surprise landing at Baghdad today “as we mark the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the campaign that liberated the people of Iraq from Saddam Hussein’s tyranny,’’ offered this public report at the prime minister's residence: “I was last in Baghdad 10 months ago, and I can sense as a result of the progress that's been made since then that there have been some phenomenal changes, in terms of the overall situation, both with respect to the security situation, where Iraqi and American forces have done some very good work, as well as with respect to political developments here in Iraq.’’
And McCain, who landed in Baghdad on Sunday, offered similar optimism today about improving prospects in Iraq. The Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee also sharply criticized the Democratic candidates for pledging to withdraw U.S. troops – a scenario which, the senator from Arizona said, will only result in al Qaeda declaring victory in Iraq and “following’’ U.S. forces home.
Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton, speaking at George Washington University today, said: “Sen. McCain would gladly accept the torch and stay the course, keeping troops in Iraq for up to 100 years if necessary.
(Sen. Hillary Clinton calling for troop withdrawals at George Washington University today. Photo by Saul Loeb / AFP/ Getty Images.)
“That in a nutshell is the Bush-McCain Iraq policy – don’t learn from your mistakes, repeat them,’’ Clinton said. “We can have hundreds of thousands of troops on the ground for a hundred years, but that doesn’t change the fact that there is no political solution to the situation in Iraq. Sen. McCain and President Bush claim withdrawal is defeat. Let’s be clear, withdrawal is not defeat. Defeat is keeping troops in Iraq for 100 years.”
"Well,'' McCain told CNN's King in an interview aired today, "all I can say is that she obviously does not understand nor appreciate the progress that has been made on the ground. She told Gen. Petraeus last year when he testified that she would have to suspend disbelief in order to believe that the surge is working. Well, the surge is working.
"So I just think what that means is al Qaeda wins,'' he said. "They tell the world that. And we fight here again and around the Middle East. And their dedication is to follow us home.''
Above right: Vice President Cheney responds to reporter's questions at a press conference with U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker and Gen.l David Petraeus in the "Green Zone" in Baghdad today. Photo by Paul J. Richards / AFP / Getty Images.
Cheney maintained that political progress has been made: “They've worked on landmark legislation that will be vital, in terms of shaping the future for Iraq. And without question, there has been dramatic improvement in the security situation, as well.
“The president asked me to come and thank the prime minister and other Iraqi officials for the leadership they've shown, and to reaffirm to the Iraqi people the unwavering commitment of the United States to support them in finishing the difficult work that lies ahead, and to consolidate and strengthen their democracy,’’ the vice president said in a photo opportunity with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki at the prime minister’s residence today.
And the McCain campaign had this to say about Clinton;s remarks:
"At a time when Sen. Clinton knows that American and allied forces are making real progress in Iraq, it is unfortunate that she would look to score political points by mischaracterizing Sen. McCain's statement with intellectually dishonest attacks,’’ said Jill Hazelbaker, communications director for the campaign. “The differences between Sen. McCain's position, that we must win this war, and Senator Clinton's position, withdrawal and de facto surrender on day one, are important enough to have an honest debate over.
“It would be the height of irresponsibility to stick with campaign promises to the left-wing of the Democratic Party and proceed with withdrawal regardless of what the situation is on the ground in Iraq in January 2009,’’ she said.
“The point that Sen. McCain was making was one about American troop presence versus American combat presence. He was speaking of a post-war scenario, not a hundred year war, when he suggested that the American people could support maintaining a military presence in Iraq should the Iraqi and U.S. governments determine it to be in their mutual interest, just as the U.S. and German, Japanese, and South Korean governments did after conflicts.’’

Comments
Hillary's right on this one. Regardless of the fact that she voted for the war (actually it was use of force), this is a no-win situation and it's time to get out of someone else's country. And that goes for ALL of them where we have bases. Something's wrong when we have to have our military presence in every corner of this planet.
And we need to stop complaining about gas prices. We have NO right to that resource and have to be prepared to pay what it costs...without the help of military might.

Cheney and the Republicans have been WRONG on every single thing they've said about Iraq for the last 5 years. There is no reason to start believing them now, it'd be easier to just assume the opposite of what they say is right.

Haven't we heard this all for five years now. When McCain say's things like this I get nervous. I like him as a person but I have to wonder what's going on in his head foreign policy wise. That follow us home mantra is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I mean if that's the case, we should have invaded Saudi Arabia!!!

Hillary was quoted as saying "there is no political solution in Iraq." I thought the DNC rhetoric was that there is no military solution, only a political one. I guess when you speak only in terms of meaningless rhetoric it is easy to get confused.
Silva, nice picture of Cheney. Was he on the toilet? Give me a break. Posting unflattering pictures of people you don't like is about as lame and transparent as it gets. I want to say you are better than that, but maybe you are not.

Obviously the Swamp reporters promote Obama in particular, and Democrats in general. Hence the choice of photos. And judging by today's articles, they're under orders to airbrush Rev. Jeremiah Wright out of the news.
Since this Mark Silva article is about John McCain, I'll ask why the usually poll-loving Mark Silva isn't giving the results of the latest Zogby and Rasmussen polls, which show McCain beating both Obama and Clinton.
It can't be because Silva dooesn't trust those polls--he's cited them in the past. It can't be because he doesn't report on polls--he does that all the time. Everybody would concede these polls are news. And they've bee public for several days.
It's just chapter 332 in the long-standing DNC Swamp practice of only mentioning polls that show Democrats doing well.

BS as usual from you, Bill R. You were one of the posters that defended Jeremiah "goddaman America" Wright. You bring up people who McCain has denounced such as Hagee wherenever he's mentioned. You refuse to address the fact that Obama has been a member of that hatemonger's church for 20 years and has indoctrinated his children into it whereas McCain got an endorsement from Hagee and quickly damned his anti-catholic remarks. Don't be surprised when other posters call you on your BS, there Hussein.

It's also worth noting that while McCain and Cheney are in Iraq talking to our troops on the ground, Obama is considering making an appearance at the San Diego Comic Con. Presumably this will be to shore up the John E. basement dweller vote that's so strong in his coalition. I wonder if The Swamp will find a flattering picture of that event? And will Obama come out against the superhuman powers registration act?

after helping the government select haliburton for all those military contracts and continuing to use them regardless of the fact that they are practically stealing money from the government, i don't believe a word that comes out of cheney's mouth.

So our brave men and women in the military are curbing the violence in Iraq. That must mean that the Iraqi government is making great progress in taking over the control of the country and has finally started acting like a governing body. Oh, I'm sorry, it doesn't mean that? You mean the so called Iraqi government is no closer to functioning like a real body of government than it was since the surge started. Then what are our men and women doing over there?

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows John McCain with a six-percentage point lead over both potential Democratic opponents. McCain currently leads Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton by an identical 48% to 42% margin. McCain has a double-digit lead over Clinton among unaffiliated voters and is essentially even with Obama among those same voters. However, McCain makes greater inroads among Democrats with Obama as the nominee.

BAGHDAD - A female suicide bomber attacked a group of Shiite worshippers near a mosque in Karbala on Monday, killing at least 39 people and wounding 54, officials said.
The worshippers were gathered at a sacred historical site about half a mile from the Imam Hussein shrine, one of the holiest sites for Shiites.

The only thing hippies ever offered the US was a quicker method of transmitting STDs. Now go stink up some other country and get out of mine, Jeff's, Luke's, Bill R's, Don B's, and Leatherneck's.

I respect your call for raising it a level and don't think traitor is a term for any of us.
Posted by: Steve Hussein S | March 17, 2008 1:32 PM
Thank you for seeing that raising this to that level is wrong on so many levels. I believe we can keep the rhetoric to a dull roar.

Remember folks, John McCain said that the US will pull out of Iraq, but on our own terms, not on the terrorists'. The man knows what he's talking about.

Bill, I posted what you wrote. Here it is again. You can try revisionist history all you want but you can't run away from the written record.
I was going to agree with C Mo ( I do ), then I read the garbage on the Obama pages. You know what...deal with it.

That is cut and pasted from the thread with video of Naomi Wolf claiming McCain gave up secrets during the 5.5 years he was in the Hanoi Hilton.
Who, exactly, do you think you're supporting when you make comments like that, Bill R.? It's not McCain or anyone who's ever been in the military.
THESE are the people you're allowing yourself to be counted with: "McCain is the worst kind of coward.
Posted by: John Chuckman, Toronto, Canada | March 15, 2008 10:39 AM"
Did you hear that, Bill R.? Your fellow Vietnam veteran, a man who spent 5 years in a prison camp and refused earlier release to stay true to his code of honor is being shamelessly attacked by human filth like Naomi Wolf and the canadian.
Where's the honor in that, Bill r.?
These are the people I stand with, Bill.
"I shouldn't even dignify this smear with a response but I will.
I do not agree with John McCain on some of his political positions BUT as a Marine Corps Viet Nam combat veteran, I MUST stand up for my fellow combat Veteran and American. John McCain spent five & a half years of hell in a P.O.W. camp, endured unspeakable torture for his country and REFUSED to come home from imprisonment when offered by his captors. For anyone, ANYONE to smear this man's military service is absolutely despicable, cowardly & outrageous.
John McCain showed more guts than 99.9%!

Mike

How old are you Brett? We've all this crap before. It was called "Peace with Honor." We didn't buy the warmongers line then, and we don't buy it now. The only way we "lose" is if we spend ourselves into bankruptcy and spill more blood needlessly.
BTW, what ever happened to the "dominoes theory" re: S.E. Asia?

Steve Hussein S: Johnny E's mummy and dudsy do not allow him to leave the basement. If he was to leave the basement, the folks in the white clothes from the Elgin Mental Health Center would be able to nab him and said him back to where he belongs: in the psych ward for the permenently mentally deranged.

What a brilliant comment John D. What was the topic again. Oh yeah nothing you said had anything to do with it! Looks like the troops have another 100years to take pictures with republicans.

If you read C mos' post, which I'm sure you did, you would have read where he thought what she said was a hogwash. I was going to agree with him and then I saw the nastiest posts on a different thread...and in disgust with the tone...I said deal with it. I might not spell as well as you, or care, but boy...where did you learn english? You want to claim something with this?

Geographically Ignorant Dumb Dumb Little Johnnie Dyslin, "the Joseph Stalin of Streamwood", got ANY PROOF to back up this little opinion of yours? And remember to post it right next to the PROOF that you've provided that John Edwards pays just as much for his suits as Dubya does.
Oh, wait ... you've NEVER POSTED ANY PROOF OF THAT!

Don-
It is oh so convenient to cherry pick information. Try READING the entire page here:
http://rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/election_2008_electoral_college_update
You'll love this from the same site:
"Market data also suggests that Obama has a 43.5% chance to become the next President. Expectations for McCain to become President are at 39.7% while Clinton’s prospects are at 18.8%."http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/daily_presidential_tracking_poll
As a matter of fact Don read the entire site. Then prepare for your new President: Barack Obama.
Thanks for playing, come back when you are capable of thinking.

Hey no-life John Weiner E
Are you still commenting on this post, or do I have to wait for your lil head to pop up somewhere else?
Did you ever get to bed last night or were you up all night trying to think of petty insults for us?
Posted by: Steve Hussein S | March 18, 2008 8:53 AM
So much anger and irrational comment from the Right Wing here.
I'm sure the tone of things couldn't have been much worse against the reasonable voices in Germany as the troops invaded innocent Poland, starting a war that would eventually consume 50 million souls.
By the way, those German troops, with Hitler’s swastika over their breast pockets, wore belt buckles with a slogan which translates: “God with Us.”
What is amazing is the absolute inability of such people to learn anything new.
Five years in Iraq has taught them nothing. This despite the fact that one of America's most gifted former generals labeled the invasion as the greatest strategic blunder in modern history.
Do you not understand that even if the terror has slowed down now with more troops that that is almost the least of the problems ahead? Do you really believe mad McCain’s words about a hundred years if necessary? Don’t you understand that Iraq is doomed now to fall apart with God only knows what consequences? Although, very clearly, one of them will be the Southern part falling under Iran’s influence and the Northern part strengthening the guerilla warfare of Kurds in Turkey?
It is disappointing, but it comes as no surprise. All that horror and murder and destruction in Vietnam - all for no point whatsoever - taught these people nothing. They weep at the Wall with 55,000 names on it and never give a thought to the 3,000,000 dead, countless crippled, and the environmental horror they left for others.
Some people are just born bullies, just like some are natural born killers.

We are currently stationed at Dyess AFB and my husband is a member of the 39th Airlift Squadron. I am proud of my husband and his fellow Airmen. (Not to mention all of the Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines who are so far from home!) I wish Americans could show them more respect and support. They are doing their job and every negative remark that is made against them gets another soldier killed. I for one would like my husband to come home to me and our daughter...so would all the other spouses. You don't have to like what is going on, but do you have to be so hateful?
