When is an attack not an attack – or better put, when is one attack worse than another?
That's the question two Hillary Clinton spokesmen and a conference-call-full of reporters danced over, around and through this afternoon, spurred by the Clinton aides' charges that Barack Obama's campaign has criticized Clinton's character in a manner inconsistent with his campaign's promise to change the tone of American politics.
Obama, Clinton aides Howard Wolfson and Phil Singer contend, preaches unity and civility to his campaign-trail crowds while his aides "assault" Clinton's truthfulness and character. Instead of building up Obama's credentials on the economy and national security, Wolfson said, "they have chosen to tear Sen. Clinton down… This is not the campaign we were promised."
To which several reporters replied, hey wait a second, isn't your campaign doing the same thing? Haven't you been attacking Obama for months?
Wolfson and Singer responded, over the course of several questions, with two basic arguments: 1) That Clinton is "drawing contrasts" – that's political speak for "attacking" - on issues, such as Iraq, NAFTA and health care, while Obama's campaign is attacking "character"; character attacks are much worse, by their reasoning; and 2) That Obama's campaign is predicated on eschewing such attacks (with the unspoken punch-line being, Clinton's is not).
"It's not a question of who's more positive or who's more negative," Singer said. Wolfson followed up: "Sen. Obama is telling people he's running one kind of campaign when in fact he's running a different kind of campaign."
Got that?
For the record, Obama's campaign responded with this statement from spokesman Bill Burton: "Since the Clinton campaign had a news-less conference call, reiterating tired lines of attack with no basis in reality, instead of responding with a call of our own, we are going to give the press corps a break so that we can all enjoy this holiday weekend with our families and maybe even watch a little basketball."

Comments
HAHAHAHA. The HRC people are crazy. Every time Obama's campaign calls Hillary on her lies Wolfy and Singer say "that's not the campaign we were promised" and do not even attempt to touch upon what the Obama campaign is calling them out on. And the questions go unanswered and HRC supporters are all "Obama is SO negative!". I love how us Obama supporters get the rap of "drinking the koolaid" but all HRC supporters can do is repeat the endless attacks that come out of Wolfson, Singer and Penn's mouths. EDUCATE YOURSELVES--and even more importantly GET ANGRY BECAUSE YOUR CANDIDATE IS LYING TO YOU!!!
Also, HRC camp responded to Obama camp's response by saying:
"The Obama camp is so eager to give the press corp a break that it had their candidate do an event today where they dispatched one of their top surrogates to manufacture an attack on us. More words.”
These 3 men act like they are 8 year olds.

These two yahoos are confirming what the polls are showing: That the public prefers a calm, dignified, experienced John McCain to these two immature cat fighters.

Slam Dunk!
Wolfson, Penn, Singer...I think you guys enjoy these conference calls a little too much!
Moaning about character attacks ain't going to win you sympathy when you're doing the same thing...
Although there is one important message to this whole thing...
While the Obama campaign may be trying to shake off an uncomfortable week or so by getting a bit tougher on the opposition...
attacks on Obama's electability (which probably includes his character traits by alluding to his ex-pastor etc) in the hope that it will tarnish his image for superdelegates is now the ONLY strategy the Clinton campaign have left to realistically win the nomination.
Hillary's campaign now depends entirely on going negative...its the only way they can do it and you can bet it won't be pretty or civilised.
Expect some March Madness..and Obama still in the lead at the end.

Hillary has way more negatives than Obama would for a general election contest.

After a couple months of screaming that Obama is a Muslim, anti-white racist, related to Saddam Hussein ect etc blah blah blah, the GOPer's will overplay their hand and it will start to backfire on them...you can count on it.
Posted by: come as you are | March 22, 2008 3:03 PM
Oh please. It's not about negative and positive, but about lies and truth.
Clinton saying "...as far as I know" when asked whether Obama is a 'closet Muslim' is not the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Neither is it about what the definition of 'is' is. It is a LIE. It's nothing but an attempt to mislead the voters.
Obama pointing out facts in Clinton's schedule as First Lady, such as comparing dates of trips to dates of historical importance, is the TRUTH. It's informing the voters of actual sequences of events.
Why is this difference so difficult to grasp?

A TV news network said this afternoon, upon further investigation the person that violated Obama's passport was actually an Obama supporter. It seems to me since the Wright controversy the Obama campaign has been doing anything possible to change the focus from the disastrous past week he suffered. After the Texas and Ohio Primaries the mainstream media was asking if people thought Obama could get up after taking a punch. As of today we still don't know if he can get up, but we have learned the past couple weeks he definitely knows how to knock himself out....
Posted by: Rajencajen | March 22, 2008 3:34 PM
Without question Hillary Clinton has elevated the attack to an art form.
"There are people in the party who are very concerned about this turning into some kind of a Bataan Death March."
The Bataan Death March continues!!!

Now an Obama spokesman is quoted elsewhere as calling Bill Clinton a "McCarthyite."
When two socialists get into a catfight, I root for injuries.
Only the dysfunctional Democrats could breathe life into John McCain's candidacy.
How could they ever govern?

Attacks are like notches or souvenirs aren't they in the world of politics as in business?
Everyone has them, and most thrive upon them.
National politics has never been qualified as soft ball, now has it?
Why should this year be different? We haven't even hit the main event yet.
Posted by: Pat | March 22, 2008 3:57 PM
So the Clinton campaign's argument is basically that yes, they're running a negative campaign, but it's ok because they never said they'd run any other sort of campaign?
That's like starting a fight with a pacifist and claiming it's ok because you're not a pacifist yourself. It's silly.
Posted by: Aengil | March 22, 2008 4:19 PM
I didn't know the Obama camp was attacking HRC negatively. Obama's simply stating facts. Hillary Clinton is playing on voters fears and, yes, using the issue of race to her advantage. Once again the media is presenting the black man as a brute and the white woman as a frail victim. I thought people would be wise to the Clintons' tricks by know but I guess I underestimated the stupidity of most Americans. Wise up and back Obama.

I think Obama's attacks are worse because he pretends and gives off this image of being "above it all". He talks about not engaging in such politics, but he does it just the same. The campaign his advisors are running are as ugly as ever.
I dislike pretense and hypocrisy more than anything else.

There's still a reluctance to tell Hillary Clinton bad news, so today we have another gatekeeper and creator of media narratives, Time senior political analyst Mark Halperin, providing a list of painful things Hillary Clinton knows—or should know. Here are a few of his bullet-points:
~She can’t win the nomination without overturning the will of the elected delegates, which will alienate many Democrats.
~She can’t win the nomination without a bloody convention battle — after which, even if she won, history and many Democrats would cast her as a villain.
~Nancy Pelosi and other leading members of Congress don’t think she can win and want her to give up. Same with superdelegate-to-the-stars Donna Brazile.
~Many of her supporters — and even some of her staffers — would be relieved (and even delighted) if she quit the race; none of his supporters or staff feel that way. Some think she just might throw in the towel in June if it appears efforts to fight on would hurt Obama’s general election chances.
~The Rev. Wright story notwithstanding, the media still wants Obama to be the nominee — and that has an impact every day.
~Many of the remaining prominent superdelegates want to be for Obama and she (and Harold Ickes) are just barely keeping them from making public commitments to him.
~This is a change election, and Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton can never truly be change.
~Even though her campaign staff is having more fun than it has for a long time, there’s hardly anyone there who, given half a chance, wouldn’t slit Mark Penn’s throat — and such internal dissension won’t help her in the home stretch.

Both sides are mounting negative attacks, without question. The difference is that Obama SAID he wouldn't. He SAID it would be a different kind of campaign. And he is just as slimy, just as dirty as any other politician. When he ran for the state Senate, he had operatives cull the nominating petitions, and got all the challengers booted. Yes it was legal. No, it was certainly not a "new campaign."
He is not different. He is not about unity and hope. He is about himself. And that's a himself with huge ethical lapses and poor judgment.

Beth hit the nail on the head. Both sides have been attacking one another, but the hypocrite Obama said he was a different kind of politician who could run a new kind of campaign. What is new about attacking the other candidate?
He also said he was going to bring some kind of change to the White House . . . how i s he going to do that with the likes of Kennedy and Richardson as his top advisors? Wouldn't he need to start with a group of unknowns to truly bring a change?
Finally, for those of you Obama supporters who are kicking and screaming at me and the others who think Obama is a fraud, perhaps you can do some reading about how Obama does plenty of kicking and screaming himself.
He's not the guy that he leads you people to believe he is:

The State Department investigation into how and why the passport files of three presidential candidates were breached is scrutinizing an employee at a Virginia-based company, which is headed by an adviser to Barack Obama’s campaign.
The Washington Times, which broke the news Thursday that Obama’s files were improperly accessed, reported Saturday that the State Department inspector general’s internal probe will include polygraph tests of supervisors to determine whether there was a political motive behind the breaches.

You Hillary cheerleaders are almost as bad as the Repubs, there's nothing with the Rezko story and you've already beat it into the ground, in fact just last week Obama met with all of the repoters in Chicago (Trib and Sun-Times) and answered all of their questions, Including Turning Over All Of His Tax Returns.
As for Hillary, she hasn't released her tax returns since 2003 and she still has some answering to do about her close relationship with her now jailed felon fundraising friend, Norman Hsu.

Tribune,
I think you are a little late on your question “Obama or Clinton: Who’s attacks are worse?”
Well, Obama holds the prize at this hour. CNN just reported that John O. Brennan, president and CEO of the Analysis Corp., advises the Illinois Democrat on foreign policy and intelligence issues, the source said.
Read about it here:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/03/22/passport.files/index.html
By far, Obama is the "King of tricks, lies and deceit". He is the master of these vicious attacks against Hillary.
He was the first to cry wolf over the passport file probe, and now his camp is the center of it all.
O-BAM-Bam is the crybaby of the week!

Yeah I think it's ture. She "draws contrast" on an issue, and the Obama camp responds with a character attack. I hope Jim is not the same person who thought it important to determin who should get CREDIT for a TRUCE aimed at ending the back and forth of the initial tensions over race; namely Obama accouding to the Obama Press. The same Jim who decided to bring to our attention to the petty negative attack on Hillary and Bosnia; instead of an issue. (I don't know if it rained that day or snowed. If they burned the capitol or sold oranges. She might exagerate, as much as Jim and Sinbad over diminish to get Obama elected. And for the record I'm not surprised Sinbad did not know the tensions were so bad and with his celebrity Jessica Simpson pea body brian whose only important question was "where do we eat." Just becuase he felt that way doesn't mean she was unaware of where she was going. Somwhere where she wouldn't be landing under fire, but where somwehre in Bosnia sniper fire was going off.)
McCain really benefits. I think it's partly becuse he genuinely adheres to civil decorum, and partly clever political strategy. Might or might not last once he becomes part of the issues and dialogue. We know his "anger outburst" have been brought up.
So Jim T, my man, hows it feel to "wirte" a character piece instead of an issues piece to prove Clinton "Wright?" Seems like she has the last laugh on this particular one. "The basket ball is in your court." Try not to follow it up with a political poll to add to this character horse race.

Obama Generation has it all wrong , they play the underhanded, slick dirty politics Obama learned as a politician in Illinois. They start will distortions and slide remarks in 2007 and continue the same philosophy in 2008. Obama tries to keep the truth about him under wraps as long as possible, but then came the vetting by the media . Here comes the true story about Obama!

Obama's attacks on Hillary are much less worse----than his attacks on human life.
As an Illinois Senator, Barack "Hussein" Obama voted [NO] for a dying baby to recieve medical treatment after a botched late term abortion.
His good friend and mentor, Illinois Sen. Dick "Turban" Durbin, called our soldiers at Gitmo the same as Nazi's.....who's the Nazi now?
And you lefties want this (666) anti-christ Obama to be your next president? Look into your childrens eyes, you fools.

~Papers from Whitewater
~Papers about her involvement in getting NAFTA passed
~ The $$$ donor list to the Clinton Library and the Bill Clinton foundation.

I love how--for every time there is a little scandal, and Obama is losing polls, the Obama People release a photo. (Or an endorsement.) I am assuming they are planning on winning the election with the McCain Bush hug photo. For a Campaign fixated on fighting off criticism critical of the lack of substance and it's focus on superficial image and mass media appeal, the Obama Campaign sure produces a lot of gloss paper to back their critics up.
Wright/Clinton photo...
Slamming back the Clintons as if they were the ones who brought it up. Slamming the Clinton's as if they sat through 20 years of Wright's sometimes mild sometimes angry commentary. As if it makes a difference. Clinton didn't say she'd walk on water to lead us to the promised land. Mr. High Road "post-racial" (the dumbest word in the world) did.
Yes, the sermons were only snippets. Sounded like a lot of hate to me. Sounded like a lot of hate to Obama, he said Wright was wrong. That there was no room for such attacks on a platform or the church podium.
Ironic, Obama has been a member of the church for 20 years, and Wright is not only a mentor. He was a mentor worthy enough to mention in his book. (Wright didn't share such views off the platform, off the church podium, off the record like Powers? Hum.) Yet, "no connection." So here is the Obama campaign releasing this photo. Hmmm, if Obama has "no connection" this is supposed to show that the Clinton's do? If they consider Wright such a liability because it might cost the Dems the general election, to publicly offer Wright on the alter with his grandmother, then why is he releasing this photo--so, if Obama goes down for this so does Hillary. He really cares about votes and the Democrats. If Obama goes down for Rezko, so does Hillary. Will our general election be reduce to picture for picture.
And do the former staffers for Clinton that now work for the Obama have a bone to pick with the Clintons. I mean they read into everything. Including that lame attempt to say Clinton called Obama unpatriotic. They read too much into that one. Backed up by some nut comparing it to McCarthyism. No, the Obama camp is all issues, all the time. Promise. Meaning, only when pandering without having to be answer to anyone. Press releases and speeches. Press releases and speeches.
Put him on the radio and his inexperience or, if you will have, true colors come out.
Sounds like SOP of the current CIC.

Right now you have Hillary and Barack fighting it out for the Democratic nomination. Then you have McCain and Lieberman flying around the world acting like thy have already been elected to office. It really disturbed me to see those two greeted like they were POTUS and Veep by world leaders...and on our dime too. Their political trip and fundraiser paid for by you and me.

Obama's MUCH worse. He likes to twist & distort the words of Hillary & Bill, then pretend he doesn't. He zings them out thru supporters, keeping his hands clean for the most part. But most reprehensible of all is the race card. HE started it then tried to paint it onto Bill. Now after his reverse racism is revealed, he backpedals and LIES. He never should have run; Howard Dean is making a shambles of the party, and John McCain will swallow anything to become president - that's my take. And who exactly is McCain this week? And just how is his "druggie" wife and "illegitimiate black child born of a black prostitute" doing these days? Mr. McCain sure did take one for the Repug Party a few years back & now we see the political trade-off.

"I am assuming they are planning on winning the election with the McCain Bush hug photo."
Umm, I'm not really sure what you're getting at with this, but if the eventual nominee DOESN'T make sure that every voter in America has seen that hilarious photograph a thousand times then they should be tried in a court of law for criminal negligence. (That's a joke, for the idiot literalists out there)
Further, in terms of a general election, if Democrats have any sense they will Swift Boat Senator McCain worse than Senator Kerry was.

I don’t even know why I am posting this here, but I guess it is because
I would like to SEE an honest comment.
Here’s mine:
Don’t wait on the “political debates” to make a decision.
What the debaters resort to in a campaign is almost sickening. Their PAST RECORDS will show integrity or not as far as leadership capability is concerned, not their PRESENT POSTURING.
Of the three candidates, none of them so far have convinced me that hey have a plan for carrying out what they envision. So far they have only made orations and accusations, and like any fight, no pne cares to remember who started it.
The sad part is this: No matter which democrat wins the nomination, or if John McCain is the winner in an election, America seems to be the loser. May God have mercy on us all.
