Cleveland congressman and former two-time Quixotic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich had what passes for a close call for an incumbent federal lawmaker, collecting 50 percent of the vote against four challengers in yesterday's Democratic primary.
Kucinich dropped his latest presidential bid in late January after a well-funded challenger, Cleveland City Councilman Joseph Cimperman, took Kucinich to task for neglecting his district to indulge in a far-left presidential candidacy featuring positions out of step with the Reagan Democratic sensibilities of his district.
Here are the totals from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections:
Kucinich, Dennis -- 68,156 -- 50%
Cimperman, Joe -- 47,891 -- 35%
Ferris, Barbara Anne -- 8,780 -- 6%
O'Grady, Thomas 6,780 -- 5%
Palmer, Rosemary 3,982 -- 3%
Cimperman drew first blood with a snarky video that mocked Kucinich's purported neglect of congressional duties because of his presidential campaigning:
Kucinich lamely complained about the videoing to the Federal Protective Service -- he said it violated constituents' privacy.
But he soon found more solid political footing, painting Cimperman as a corporate tool reliant on campaign money from downtown developers.
It's an old standard from the Kucinich songbook, but it worked to the extent that it helped neutralize Cimperman's charge that Kucinich was dependent on money from Hollywood liberals. Kucinich didn't hide his Tinseltown ties, making the rounds in his district in the waning days of the campaign with Sean Penn.
Kucinich's staying power probably isn't due solely to the power of incumbency. His career in Cleveland politics stretches back more than 30 years beginning with stints as a city councilman and then as mayor presiding over one of the more contentious chapters in local political history. He has universal name ID, to the point that much of his campaign signage refers to him simply as "Dennis".
Kucinich, 61, also is a fanatic about constituent service and has a fiercely loyal staff and core of supporters. Stick around for six terms, as he has, and you will have a chance to pry loose veterans benefits, round up late Social Security checks and guide the completion of confusing Medicare forms on a scale that builds mountains of goodwill.
To the point that, combined with a crowded field and other advantages, you'll get comfortably re-nominated by your socially conservative, traditionally patriotic, working-class constituents, even if you support gay marriage, want to impeach Dick Cheney, set up a Department of Peace and claim to have seen a UFO.

Comments
Fifty percent of the total means the other four guys got about as many votes as he did--combined.
I'd hardly call that a close call, unless one of the other guys got 45 percent and the other three split 5 percent of the vote.

It’s regrettable that a Candidate like Dennis Kucinich cannot be taken seriously. He has better ideas, works hard for his constituents, has actually had to work for a living, and understands life for those born without silver spoons.
Dennis does not represent me in Congress but he represents my views, unlike my DINO congressman. Because Dennis champions causes that support the working classes, he is vilified by the Corporatist and the puppet MSM to the point that most people dismiss him as an idiot. Very much the way the article disrespects him by the UFO comment. And so what? Hasn’t almost every one seen something that they could not identify? That was a bull shit question then, done only to marginalize and embarrass him. Perpetuating it is irresponsible.
We have a Congressman willing to stand up to this Administration, willing to fight the pharmaceutical companies, willing to go against an immoral war….yet he’s the goof ball. Seems to me the other ones in DC are the goof balls.
Give ‘em Hell for me Dennis!

Wow, yet another reason I'm glad I moved away from Ohio! I'm as liberal as the next guy in Chicago, but really, the only thing this guys done right is have a hot wife!

Way to go Sammy Jo! The "media" are paid to ridicule and marginalize anyone who threatens the power and position of the puppet masters. I would be proud to have Dennis as my Congressman and prouder still to have him as my President. Dennis may be physically small but he has the biggest balls of any of the presidential candidates. Maybe "Michael" that's why he has a "hot wife". Glad you moved out of Ohio- hopefully to Texas with the rest of the idiots.

glad he won the primary and, as Michael said, it's a shame he can't be taken seriously and automatically gets marginalized by the mainstream media. At least he'll still be in the house to act as a truly liberal (as opposed to moderate-masquerading-as-liberal) conscience

I'll second what Sean said as I'm in Chicago and would prefer all idiots live in Texas as well. Kucinich is the only Democrat that has had the guts to try to do what he swore to do: "Protect and defend the U. S. Constitution." He had my vote. I just wish the citizens of Ohio would remember what life was like when the Clintons were last in the White House. They divide the country worse than Bush has done and their saga as a couple deterred them from keeping a single of the 1992 campaign promises Bill made. They had to spend so much money for lawyers, they left the White House broke. Don't any of you people wonder where they got $5million to lend to a flagging campaign? Bill's pals with papa Bush these days, too, or do you not notice the important things? Hillary's campaign lied about the Obama campaign and NAFTA and you ate it up like Bush was feeding it after 9/11. Makes me sick, but I'm glad Dennis is going to be around.

I used to live in Cleveland. I met him personally several times in the course of my duties (4-5 times?) and the Congresswoman from Toledo (forgot her name, Kaptur?). They both looked quite reasonable people to me.

Sammie Jo nailed it. The Main Stream Media sold it's collective soul long ago, as has most of the Democratic Party, seemingly. Dennis Kucinich stands (nearly) alone as a beacon of truth and integrity awash in a sea of craven corporate toadies. I wish he was my Congressman, too. "Department of Peace ... indeed. Oh ha ha ha, Chris Matthews, Tom Brokaw, Wolfe Blitzer, Andy Zajac. Oh what a wacky, silly idea. Oh ha ha, chuckle chuckle. Why would we ever need a Department of Peace in times like these? Don't you know that the War Industry is the only manufacturing business we haven't farmed out to China? (But maybe we will as soon as we figure out how to make Smart Bombs out of plastic.) What a loon, that Kucinich is. We hear he eats VEGETABLES, too! Oh yeah, and did we mention he saw a UFO? Oh ha ha ha."

Will he continue to neglect his district while fawning all over Sean Penn and trying to run again for president in 2012?

Glad he got re-elected. A totally decent guy, really smart too he walks the walk and he fights for his constituents. Even knows the constitution. A peace department, makes sense, hey does anyone really like war better than peace. Try living in a war zone. Yeah Dennis has seen a UFO and his name is McCain what a flying freako shiney headed bit of fakeyness and Michael your just jealous cuz the pretty girls dont want you go eat your vegetables

Ah, once again, the "Kucinich UFO", elicited by the nefarious and unexpected question tossed like a bomb by Tim Russert, whose employer's health insurance business would be eliminated by the single payer system advocated by Kucinich. Dennis would have been spared this kind of denigration if only he had come back quickly with "Yes, I did see a UFO, and I am hoping to se another one, to catch up with Ronald Reagan, who saw two."

Thumbs up for Sammie Jo. Torture as national policy? Secret prisons? The end of habeas corpus? Warrantless spying on emails, Website visits, phone calls? Retroactive immunity for law breakers? This Congress couldn't protect me from the broad side of a barn. Dennis speaks for me. Time to send in another $10.
