Hillary Clinton digs into Pennsylvania roots: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Josh Drobnyk

SCRANTON, Pa.-- Hillary Clinton rounded out her first week of campaigning in Pennsylvania with a return visit here today, working a crowd of tens of thousands that lined the streets at the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The repeat appearance in just six days seemed designed to drive home Clinton’s roots in the area and cement her status as the hometown favorite before rival Barack Obama comes calling for votes. The Illinois senator is scheduled to address several hundred women at the Society of Irish Women dinner in Scranton on Monday.

The Scranton parade has become a virtual rite of passage for statewide political candidates in recent years — both Gov. Ed Rendell and challenger Lynn Swann came here two years ago — and Clinton crisscrossed the wide route to shake hands, pose for photos and greet the occasional star-struck toddler.

“This is so great. When we made the turn and saw the crowd stretching so deep, it took my breath away,” Clinton, a New York senator, said at the end of the route. “It couldn’t be a more perfect day.”

Everywhere she has been in Pennsylvania as she campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination, Clinton has been greeted by a crew of supportive public officials and the ever-present Rendell — her top surrogate in the state — to introduce her to crowds. The mayors of the three other cities she campaigned in last week have all endorsed her.

Scranton was no different. Mayor Chris Doherty strolled next to Clinton throughout the route, waving his arms in the air to encourage the crowd’s cheers, often pausing to lead the senator toward someone he knew. At one point she grabbed a young girl out of the arms of her father and carried her along as her father trailed behind enthusiastically.

Clinton needs no introduction here, though. Her father was raised in Scranton and her family returned often to vacation here when Clinton was a child. She kicked off her Pennsylvania campaign to a rowdy welcome from a packed Scranton High School gymnasium on Monday.

The parade crowd gave Clinton a similarly enthusiastic welcome, many chanting “Hillary, Hillary,” and holding green “Clinton country” posters along the route. Only occasionally could a retort from an Obama supporter be heard: “We want change.”

Evelyn Batzel, 40, drove an hour with her family to catch a glimpse of the senator.

“I just shook her hand,” she yelled back to her husband and sons as Clinton continued on. A hospital billing agent from Honesdale, Batzel said she thinks Clinton is best prepared to overhaul the country’s health care system and enact universal coverage.

“The affection here is incredible,” said Rendell, who also walked with Clinton, as did U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-11th District.

The visit ended a week that drew stark differences in the campaigns’ early approaches to Pennsylvania. For Clinton, Saturday’s event was her seventh in six days in the state. She also campaigned in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, often reminding audiences of the trek her family would make across Pennsylvania as it drove to Scranton for family vacations.

Earlier Saturday, Clinton walked the Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s Day parade before coming to Scranton.

Together with her husband and daughter, one Clinton or another has been in Pennsylvania nearly full-time for the past 10 days.

Obama, on the other hand, made just one stop in the state this week, a low-key swing to a wind turbine factory in Bucks County on Tuesday. His wife, Michelle, made a pitch to more Pennsylvanians during her stop at a Montgomery County high school and Villanova University on Thursday.

With Clinton the early favorite to carry the majority of the state’s 158 pledged delegates, Obama’s campaign has sought to play down the importance of winning Pennsylvania, arguing that it is just one of 10 contests remaining in the nomination fight. Obama leads Clinton overall by 106 delegates, according to an Associated Press count.

“We do not view this as a race now solely about the state of Pennsylvania,” Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said in a conference call with reporters last week.

Clinton’s campaign, meanwhile, wants to draw Obama onto what it considers home turf. It put Rendell and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter on a conference call last week to argue that Obama was ignoring Pennsylvania, an important general election state.

Obama spent Saturday campaigning in Indiana, which along with North Carolina is next on the primary calendar after Pennsylvania.

On Monday he’ll be in western Pennsylvania and Scranton. Among those he’ll have the opportunity to sway in Scranton is Cheryl Schneider, a 46-year-old medical secretary from West Scranton who said she’s leaning toward backing Clinton but is “keeping an open mind.”

“I give him credit for coming to talk to all those women,” she said.

Schneider’s sister-in-law, Joann Schneider, a Republican, said she suspected many in the area could be swayed by Obama’s message.

“Obama has something,” said Joann Schneider, 50, a waitress from Old Forge, just south of Scranton. “He’s just got it. He has something that can make people change their mind.”

Go Hillary : ))

After much research, soul-searching and actually listening to what both candidates have to say and what their actual legislative records show, I decided to vote for Hillary. I had to take off the blinders of opinion polls, media spin, ugliness and excitement and remember what this race is really about: Hiring someone to do the toughest and, arguably, most important job on the planet. Being President of the US isn't about speeches, promises and fluff - it is about who I believe will get up, everyday, and work their butt off for me and every other hardworking American. It's about cutting thru the maze of promises and see what lies underneath - do their actions speak louder than their words? That person to lead this nation is Senator Clinton. She has been thru many tribulations, tests, and challenges in her life and like the Energizer Bunny, just keeps going and going. Where she gets the energy and conviction, I wish I knew. Think what each of us could do in our own lives and communities with just an ounce of her strength!

Ahhhh....she may be another Marxist / socialist, but atleast she's not an empty suit with a silvered forked tongue.

She's # 2 on the terrorist love list though.

McCain in 2008!

Paulo

Hillary is just more of the same old Washington politics.

Time for a refreshing change:

*BARACK TO THE FUTURE*

Paulo,

#1 on the "...terrorist love list...." must be the guy who can't catch him after 7 years. #1 must be the guy who has flamed the fans of Muslim fanatasism with the unjust, costly war in Iraq.

That's right...

Dubya & McSame more years.

!GOBAMA!

HELP Hillary Clinton Make History. Hillary Clinton is the prayer of every woman and man who long for fair play, healthy families, good schools, and a balanced economy. Dr. Maya Angelou, poet, educator, historian, best-selling author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director. Black men were given the vote a half-century before women of any race were allowed to mark a ballot, and generally have ascended to positions of power, from the military to the boardroom, before any women .Why is the sex barrier not taken as seriously as the racial one? The reasons are as pervasive as the air we breathe: because sexism is still confused with nature as racism once was; because anything that affects males is seen as more serious than anything that affects only the female half of the human race because children are still raised mostly by women so men especially tend to feel they are regressing to childhood when dealing with a powerful woman; because racism stereotyped black men as more masculine for so long that some white men find their presence to be masculinity-affirming (as long as there aren’t too many of them); and because there is still no right way to be a woman in public power without being considered a bitch. I’m supporting Senator Clinton because she has community organizing experience, but she also has more years in the Senate, an unprecedented eight years of on-the-job training in the White House, no masculinity to prove, the potential to tap a huge reservoir of this country’s talent by her example, and now even the courage to break the no-tears rule. If you look at votes during their two-year overlap in the Senate, they were the same more than 90 percent of the time. Besides, to clean up the mess left by President Bush, we may need two terms of President Clinton But what worries me is that he is seen as unifying by his race while she is seen as divisive by her sex. What worries me is that she is accused of “playing the gender card” when citing the old boys’ club, while he is seen as unifying by citing civil rights confrontations. What worries me is that male Iowa voters were seen as gender-free when supporting their own, while female voters were seen as biased if they did and disloyal if they didn’t. What worries me is that reporters ignore Mr. Obama’s dependence on the old — for instance, the frequent campaign comparisons to John F. Kennedy — while not challenging the slander that her progressive policies are part of the Washington status quo. What worries me is that some women, perhaps especially younger ones, hope to deny or escape the sexual caste system; thus Iowa women over 50 and 60, who disproportionately supported Senator Clinton, proved once again that women are the one group that grows more radical with age. This country can no longer afford to choose our leaders from a talent pool limited by speeches, celebrities, sex, race, money, powerful fathers and paper degrees. It’s time to take equal pride in breaking all the barriers. We have to be able to say: “I’m supporting her because she’ll be a great president!!

Paulo...Empty suit? I guess you prefer McBushs' photo op to negotiate .............with our friends???????????? When is the party that is willing to send our young men and woman to a war, willing to go himself and try something...anything?

There is so much focus on the candidates' media images. If you want to judge a person in your own life, you look at their actions. Look at the candidates' records WITH AN OPEN MIND. Hillary Clinton has spent 35+ years working for health care, education, prison reform, rural economies, human and women's rights, etc. It's all in the record. People dismiss it without being informed, but you cannot deny how much she has accomplished, and how hard she has worked when you get the facts. She has unbelievable strength, and focus. Despite the witch hunt to demonize her, first by the Republicans and now, sadly, by other Democrats, she soldiers on courageously. That's the kind of President she would be. Go to her web site and listen to the videos on "The Hillary I Know." People who she has helped and people who have known her for 40+ years--she is not a "monster," but a deeply compassionate, intelligent, hard-working human being. She has detailed knowledge of every challenge we face and innovative solutions. Her record working across the aisle proves she can do what is necessary to make these ideas a reality. Obama has potential, but he does not have that record. The NYTimes article last week clearly shows that he has played a "minor role" in the Senate. This is no time to hire a rookie with a magnetic personality. We are not voting for Prom King. We need a tested warrior to battle the challenges we face. Hillary '08.

Have all the Hillary supporters forgotten about the questionable activities that occurred during Bill Clinton's administration?

Perhaps these respected polls will refresh their memory. Do we really need Hillary to bring this type of "experience" to the White House?

http://www.pollingreport.com/scandals.htm

So, while Mrs. Clinton celebrates yet another "homecoming" where she pays tribute to her roots, I wondered where her brothers are. Were they proudly marching beside her?

The Repubs are sooo eager to get out their own kitchen sink, which contains the pardon peddling brothers Rodham, among all the other items.

With wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Bush created escalating tension in Iran, we need a leader who can rally our allies, a leader who already has relationships with world leaders, a leader who has been to Iraq four times as well as to Pakistan. That leader is Hillary Clinton. We don't have time for Obama to go on a meet-and-greet tour. Remember Obama's comment in one of the debates that he would "bomb Pakistan" if he thought he knew where Bin Ladin was? He is dangerously naive. Pakistan is a nuclear country in turmoil right now. They don't need to hear that we would bomb them. Over 25 top U.S. current and retired military leaders support Hillary because they know she will be a strong Commander-In-Chief in these very troubling times. Hillary '08

I would like to know how you can compare a sex scandal with Obama? Obama's minister hates America,G-D America, he says. His wife hates America. I have never been proud of America, and Farrahkan is anti-semetic and anti-white. If you can not see a hidden agenda here, then nothing will wake you up. How sad that Caroline Kennedy compares Obama to her father. By the way, JFK had many affairs. Only when pushed did he finally denounce his minister. But you know that is for show. He has known this man for over 20 years..baptism, wedding, etc. Wake up America!! You who vote for him will be sorry!!

Doug Hussein Zook, anyone claiming that the terrorists won't be bolstered by and filled with joy over an immediate drawdown of US troops (which Obama promises on the campaign trail) is kidding themselves.

Too bad the press is not digging into Hillary's roots and exposing her lies and corruptions. She banks on people's short memories and her ability to deceive to manipulate people. Thanks to that, we can figure on saying: Hello President McCain. Too bad the Clinton/Paul trial is not scheduled until mid-October, that might rip the blinders off Hillary swooning followers eyes who do not know how ruthless and corrupt she is.She has used her power to destroy lives, why do people not wake up and do some research rather than blindly trusting her.

Super delegates need to take this race seriously and not be swayed by biased pundits and Pelosi who may be threatened by the fact she could become the second most powerful woman in Washington. The Super Delegates should vote for Obama if they can conclusively answer the following questions:
1. Point out several legislative accomplishments of Obama since he was sworn in to the US Senate in 2005.
2. List several examples of his willingness to reach across the aisle in the US senate as a self-proclaimed “uniter.”
3. Explain how he has made life better for the people of Illinois since becoming a US Senator.
4. Describe how he has worked harder and has been more effective that Clinton in the senate.
5. Justify his 20 year membership in a church whose pastor exposed anti-American, anti-Semitic sentiments, as well as made vulgar reference on the pulpit. (Don’t we all belong to different denominations because we believe in what they stand for?) ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.
If you can address these questions with substantive answers, then vote for Obama. If you can't answer these questions but still support Obama, then you may become an honorary member of the bitter old men's club of presidential wannabes, who would rather eat glass than hear the words, Madam President.

Obama will never hold up in the general election with Rezko and now his minister. Give me a break. He's been going to the church for 20 years and he's never heard anything like this before. Actually, I agree with some of the things the minister has said but you just can't be associated with such a man if you are running for president. Please support Clinton and she will bring this country back.

Hopefully the Superdelegates will cast their vote for the one that is most electable and would be the best president. In my opinion - this would be HIllary Clinton. Every week that goes by we learn more and more about Obama and the things he has not been up front about. He runs his campaign based upon "hope", inspiration, and "judgement". It has been shown recently that his "judgement" is not up to par with what he "preaches". From the Rezco mess, to Farrakhan, to his pastor's remarks, we find out more and more that Obama is not really what he tries to portray himself as. This is only going to get worse as time goes by and I guarantee you - if he is the nominee the Republicans are going to have a hayday with him.

His judgement has been sadly lacking on numerous occassions and more that I'm sure will come front and center as the weeks go by. As a man who's entire campaign is run on "judgement" - his many occassions of admitted bad judgement says it all - he has absolutely nothing left to run with. Wake up Obama supporters - how can you be so taken in by someone you know nothing about. How can you continue to support a man who's only positive was to say he had the "judgement" not to support the war in the beginning? Judgement had nothing to do with it - he wasn't even in the Senate to vote and he did not have the intelligence reports to base a decision on - so in other words he made a non-educated "judgement". As we have all seen in the last several weeks - his judgement has been lacking in several issues that have raised severe questions about him. If he lacked good judgement in dealing with Rezko (which he has said himself) - now look at his own minister who Obama himself has said has been like a family member for the last 20 years - there is something wrong.

You can't tell me that Obama has sat in that church for 20 years and has never heard this pastor speak his racially charged, unpatriotic, hatred sermons. Come on people - wise up before it is too late !!!!

I'm so happy to see Hillary receive the positive coverage of the rousing reception Scranton, PA gave her, which she deserves for the dedication, drive, intelligence, sheer hard work and strong character that she has demonstrated, not only during this campaign, but throughout her life. I only wish other media outlets would get a clue, and cease their lopsided coverage and silly swooning over Obama. He is not the charismatic innocent which the naive seem to believe he is. With no substantive experience to speak of, he is simply a gifted orator, a pied piper, saying whatever he believes audiences want to hear, but as recent developments reveal, he (and his wife) very likely harbor some dangerous beliefs about this country and perhaps a sinister agenda. Obama's assertion that he never heard Rev. Wright make statements like those in the recently released video flies in the face of logic. How could he possibly attend Rev. Wright's sermons for 20 years and never have heard him preach the anti-American, racist concepts, based only in hatred, that Rev. Wright preached in the Dec. '07 sermon, concepts that are completely contradictory to the beliefs of any proclaimed Christian faith of which I'm aware? Why did he give money to Rev. Wright's church, if he condemned those concepts? Why was he married by Rev. Wright, and why did he have his children baptized by Rev. Wright, if he condemned those concepts? Why did he not object to Rev. Wright's church's belief in Africa, not America, as the 'motherland,' if he condemned those concepts? Why did he not object to Rev. Wright's church bestowing its highest social achievement award upon head of the Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan, a known anti-semite, racist, chauvinist and homphobe, if he condemned those concepts? It seems to me that his recent distancing of himself from Rev. Wright and claiming he condemns his statements is just more rhetoric, hiding what Obama truly believes, and hiding his past. It happens that Obama lives in the same affluent Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago as Farrakhan. It's the same neighborhood where Obama and Tony Rezko, a Syrian-born Chicago businessman, now under federal indictment for fraud and extortion, bought adjacent million-plus-dollar homes last year on the same day from the same realtor. In fact, Rezko has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to Obama's campaigns, with Obama knowing that Rezko was under federal investigation. These developments call into serious question Obama's judgment, wisdom, core beliefs and ethics; in short, they call into serious question his true character and suitability as a presidential candidate. Perhaps the media can look the other way and give Obama a free pass despite these revelations, but I can't, nor should any thinking voter. Hillary --who actually has some 30 years of experience in public service and actually has a plan for solving some of our nation's biggest problems -- gets my vote. But if the Democrats are foolish enough to be swept up in the 'Obamamania' being created by the media seeking only higher ratings, and naive voters content to base their decisions on biased tv soundbites, then I will switch parties and vote for McCain.

Okay, Illinois, Arkansas, New York and now Pennsylvania. Is there a state that this shrill little woman hasn't called home yet? Just wondering.

You think Obama can't be trusted? Take a good look at his wife, now there is a real piece of work.

Were Saint Patrick here today, perhaps he’d drive the snakes out of Scranton, PA. Again, Reverend J.A. Wright didn’t preach anything that professors all over America haven't taught for decades. Ward Churchill ring any bells? On the other hand, Hillary Clinton has had entire books written about her “spiritual life,” and even founded her own college – at which Ward Churchill did speak – but neither she nor Bill Clinton ever attend church. Barack Obama puts forth that Rev. Wright and Ms. Ferraro’s ideologies were shaped by the 1960s – as, I might add, were both Clintons. Yeah, if elected I think Hillary will work her butt off everyday too, just not for me. Barack Obama threatens to drag the Democratic Party, kicking and screaming out of the early 1970s, and into the 21st Century. And, some don’t like it: http://theseedsof9-11.com

Obama's wife doesn't bother me as much as Hillary's red faced finger wagging husband Billy the philanderer. Bill Clinton is a scary guy. His ego may even be bigger than Hillary's. Neither one will ever listen to anyone else's advise on anything because they think they know everything. And, they think everyone else is stupid. Arrogant SOBs.

ABC (Anybody But Clinton[s])

Please read this cut out of the article that I found about the Clintons:

MARC RICH, 2001
In 1983, financier Rich was indicted for evading more than $48 million in taxes, and charged with 51 counts of tax fraud, as well as running illegal oil deals with Iran during the 1979-1980 hostage crisis. During his last week in office, President Bill Clinton pardoned Rich, who had fled the U.S. during his prosecution and was residing in Switzerland. Clinton's eleventh-hour move, along with pardons of his half-brother, Roger, and former business partner Susan McDougal, outraged Republicans and Democrats alike. The Rich pardon sparked an investigation into whether it was bought by the hefty donations Rich's ex-wife, Denise, had given to the Clintons and the Democrats.

Tom--nice sexist language, "this shrill little woman." Is there any where OBAMA doesn't call home? Let's see, Kansas, Hawaii, ILlinois...Kenya? Give me a break. Clinton married a guy from Arkansas who went on to become governor (Hillary only changed to Clinton after voters complained about her use of Rodham in 1981!). Rhodham lived in Scranton and moved to IL. Now, if you have still have a problem with that shrill little woman, deal with it, you silly little man.

Obama's main argument against Hillary's experience is his so-called "judgment." Take the current scandals swirling around the Obama campaign. When asked about his dealings with Tony Rezko, he said it was a "lapse of judgment" and "bone-haeded." Now he's trying to explain away his ties to Rev. Wright. This is a man who Obama said is "like an Uncle" and is "a spiritual advisor." Anyone linked to these two "characters" displays anything but good judgment. So Obama can't claim experience or judgment either. Hillary is the best one to go up against McCain.

AMERICA IS IN THE MIDST OF CHOOSING THE RIGHT CANDIDATE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE AND VERY OBVIOUS THAT IT'S SENATOR HILALRYR. CLINTON!

MIRACLES HAPPENED SO OBVIOUS THAT THE MEDIA WAS TOO LATE TOO PICKED ON OBAMA'S TRUE SELF?....

Juan Williams told Donna Brazille this morning on ABC that Americans are not going to believe that story from Barack that he didn't know about his preachers views. Whose trying to cause division among blacks and whites, I think you have to say it's Barack.

IF THESE OUTRAGEOUS BIGOT COMMENTS FROM OHB PASTOR HAVE NOT MOVED YOU TO DISGUST THENIF AND WHEN HE IS ELECTED, WE WILL ALL BE SORRY!!!!!!!

news-obama campain is finished, our entire family are reg.democrats and if hillary dosn't get in as nominee our entire famly is going to cross party lines and vote for mc can.we don't believe athing obama says anymore.obama-17 to 20 years with trinity church and wright,he did not here one thing-bull.hillary is the best of them all.vote for hillary if you love your country u.s.a.

It seems to me that Obama does not really have a good judgement contrary to his claim. How could he not be able to tell that Wright is a extremnist who hates America for more than 20 years? Even just days ago, he still treated him as an "uncle"? Where is his judgement in regarding to Rezko? Apprently, they have a closer relationship than we knew, if he can not even tell that Rezko is corrupted, how can he bring new politics to Washingron? Which direction he wants the country to change to? America is a great country, even though I against the war in Iraq. But Americans are still the most generious people I know in the world.
Go Hillary! You have to win for the country.

Obama is a race-baiting, Affirmative Action candidate without the credentials to run a KFC store, much less the country. He's a racist, a slime-ball and a liar. Recent revelations should make this abundantly clear to anyone who is not already hypnotized by his empty religious drivel.

I am so glad to see others that feel Obama is not "the one." I have been concerned about Rezko and Pastor Wright for a while. I had no idea, until I saw the videos, how defamatory Pastor Wright's statements were. I lost ALL respect for Senator Obama. I am so glad I voted for Hillary. I truly hope others will wake up before it is too late.

Obama is just starting to get tested and he is crumbling under the pressure. The Tony Resko trial has just gotten started and his minister of 20 years is as anti-American as they get. Let us also not forget the aware his church of 20 YEARS gave Farakhan!!! Obama get's mad and cries 'negative campaign' whenever the Clinton's talk about his qualifications or point out his record. Imagine what crying he will do when the Republicans get persona. PEOPLE LISTEN....the Clinton's aren't perfect, no family is. The Clintons have been through the Republican attack machine...been there/done that. There is no shock and awe to what they have on Hillary. They threw all the mud on her during her senate election. She is now able to campaign on experience and the issues. It is time to get over the Obama hype and get real people. Give 'em HILL!

obama used bad judgement and then utters falsehood.we will never believe this man again.

I like obama more then cliton!!

The Welsh played a large part in founding Penn and the USA. Hillary is of Penn Welsh stock and closely linked with Scranton, She is a Welsh daughter of Pennsylvania.
