Sen. Hillary Clinton took advantage of an appearance before an audience of black newspaper publishers last night to not only apologize for the recent remarks of Geraldine Ferraro, but also to make amends for the past remarks of husband Bill Clinton.
Facing the National Newspaper Publishers Association, an assembly of more than 200 black community newspapers across the country, Clinton addressed the former president's comments after the South Carolina primary, when he compared Obama's victory to the past campaigns of the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
""I want to put that in context,'' she said. "You know I am sorry if anyone was offended. It was certainly not meant in any way to be offensive. We can be proud of both Jesse Jackson and Sen. Obama.
"Anyone who has followed my husband's public life or my public life know very well where we have stood and what we have stood for and who we have stood with," she said.
"Once one of us has the nomination there will be a great effort to unify the Democratic Party and we will do so, because, remember I have a lot of supporters who have voted for me in very large numbers and I would expect them to support Sen. Obama if he were the nominee.''
Then she addressed the Ferraro situation -- Ferraro, the party's nominee for vice president in 1984 resigned from the finance committee of the Clinton campaign last night after suggesting that Obama has only gotten where he is in this campaign "because he is black.''
"I certainly do repudiate it and I regret deeply that it was said,'' Clinton said of Ferraro's remarks first published on Friday. "Obviously she doesn't speak for the campaign, she doesn't speak for any of my positions, and she has resigned from being a member of my very large finance committee."
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

When analyzing the Mississippi primary, the pundits and the media is obsessed with skin color and gender. Since Mississippi has an open primary, where republicans can vote for democrats and vice versa, I find it more interesting to look at party affiliation. Using the CNN election and exit poll data, and some simple mathematics, we then learn that Hillary Clinton received 24% of her votes from republicans, 19% from independents and a surprisingly low 57% of her votes from democrats. The same numbers for Barack Obama are 5%, 15% and 80% respectively. Among the republicans, 59% voted for McCain, 23% for Clinton, 8% for Huckabee, 8% for Obama and 2% for Paul. Among independents, 44% voted for Obama, 35% for Clinton, 14% for McCain, 4% for Huckabee and 3% for Paul. Among democrats, 69% voted for Obama, 30% for Clinton, 1% for McCain and less than 1% for Huckabee and Paul.
Maybe the conventional wisdom is wrong, and republicans like Clinton much better than Obama. Maybe republicans followed Rush Limbaugh’s recent advice to cross the isle and vote for Clinton. In either case, it was republican voters that saved Clinton from a complete disaster in the Mississippi primary.

I think she should apologize for anything anyone who has even SEEN her has ever said or thought or may think or say so she can make sure she offends no one EVER now or on into the future. Because we all know she has mind control over every one who even has heard her name on the "news" or read it in the paper, she alone needs to apologize for everyone.

Hey Listen Up everyone! My very first reaction to this story was sarcasm, then I caught myself and decided to write this. We bloggers have gotten to the point of venting very angry blogs at each other, instead of the article. I know that this one will also cause our blood pressure to go up, especially after some of the really inane and false things that will appear in the blogs. Remember, no one is ever persuaded by anger, but rather by rational, factual statements. Let's try to make this a good, meaningful blog, with a true cross-exchange of fact and reasoning! thanks!

Barack Obama is an African-American, and this means something. It means that he has had to overcome prejudice and discrimination. He had to work harder, get an education, and be careful of his affiliations. He has achieved the vision of James McBride's "The Color of Water.".......

I have never agreed with Geraldine Ferraro but, I think Barack Obama is too thin skinned to be President. Ferraro thinks the media has anointed Obama because he is black and I think the drivebys have definitely been in his corner overlooking his Chicago machine corrupt connections.
As a liberal Obama believes everything is racism. Liberals have codes for racism you can't say his middle name without being racist.
Obama is more of a religious leader than he is a political candidate. He is using a church like sermon and his supporters are believers instead of political partisans.
There is so much political correctness involving his candidacy that you cannot evaluate him without liberals attacking you for criticism of this candidate or being racist.
Thank God there is 8 months left to give the electorate a real chance to get past this mysticism.
I admire Ferraro for the courage not to be pushed around by other liberals.
Let's focus this candidate wants a $2.4 trillion dollar tax hike by eliminating the Bush tax hikes. He goes along with Nancy Pelosi and her $18 billion dollar tax on oil companies which will raise prices at the pump for all of us.
Obamas' tax hikes will amount to some $3,025 for every taxpayer according to Freedom Watch.
This definitely makes Obama a socialist. This is where voters need to focus not on Obamas ethnicity. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

We are entering very dangerous territory by allowing Obama a pass on his race games.
If Obama gets elected does this mean no one can ever use the words “fairy tale” again, or any other words that might suggest he doesn’t know what he’s doing or what he’s talking about or that he might be full of BS, because that might be shouted down as racially insensitive?
That’s a serious issue, regardless of Obama’s politics, if political speech is going to be curtailed about something as important as the performance in office of the president of the United States, because someone’s feelings might supposedly get hurt.
I’m guessing anything remotely resembling any of the delightful remarks about Bush's chimpy appearance, intelligence, preparedness for office and performance in the last seven years would pretty much be out with the prince Obama.
Can you imagine four years of an Obama adminstration's racial slicing and dicing? What a mess. No way.

I am not sure how naive or dumb Senator Clinton assumes the public is, but it is more than obvious that her campaign has made every attempt in inject race into the election. It is very sad to see this coming from a Democrat who is acting more and more every day like a Republican. Would Hillary be where she was at in this election if she were not a woman. Has she done anything in her short elected career to warrant being a candidate for President of the United States? So why would her campaign take the time to make those comments about Senator Obama unless it was to point out that he is black. I think we knew that already. It is more to bolster the racial fears and sterotypes that will cause the masses not to stray from their comfort zone. All I have to say to Hillary is, you cannot get elected with just the white or black vote. So you cannot do one thing to get nominated and hope to get elected with phony apologies. I think we are all a bit smarter than that.
Posted by: garylsil | March 13, 2008 9:52 AM
I completely agree. The Obama camp has, with at least three white crusaders for civil liberties, portrayed them as racists. Keen on the fact that race is a difficult issue to discuss or mention, as opposed to say gender, the Obama camp has exploited the race card knowing full well this will rally people to his side. What a masterful politician!
Posted by: George | March 13, 2008 9:54 AM
Oh, whatever. One of Obama's staffers refers to Hillary as a "monster" and was then forced to resign.
Hillary *is* a monster. She's an evil, awful woman who will trample over anyone in her way and do anything she can to get to the White House.
And remember, Obama isn't the one running around calling everyone a "racist"--that's the media doing that. Have we seen Obama lose his cool? I've seen Hillary do it constantly throughout this campaign. She's on the ropes and she knows it.
Posted by: Mike | March 13, 2008 9:56 AM
What? are you serious? why is there commentary when whites vote for a Clinton or other white candidate? Does anyone besided me notice that something is wrong when blacks vote 90% one way and no one seems to notice that just maybe there is a racial element to the voting pattern, what if whites voted by the same percentage for a white candidate? would that be racist also? I would really like to know why only whites can be considered racist but not blacks or others.

Geraldine Ferraro didn't criticize his record, which is perfectly legitimate. She reduced his candidacy to race. She said if he was a white man or a woman he wouldn't be a president candidate. Why even go there?!!

Clintons kitchen sink strategy of throwing any and all kinds of mud including trying to wedge first the Latinos against the African Americans and now Whites against them is biting her in the arse. She deserves the whupping she is taking due to her sense of entitlement. She did not forsee the momentum wave for change and Barack Obama and now she is drowning in it. Billary needs to get out of the way and let the fair winner take it to the Republicans. Her vote for the war is not forgivable. Our children have and are dying for what is now proven is no good reason at all.
p.s. Barack Obama WON TEXAS folks.

The reason people forget the issues and snipe at one another is because there are those who clearly can't look beyond their candidate and be honest as to whether or not they are at fault. Since some of you cannot look at a situation from a non-objective point of view, I will.
YES, I support Barack Obama, but that doesn't mean I can't find fault with his issues and be honest about them. Geraldine Ferraro has an absolute right to her opinions, but just because she has a mouth, it works and can form sentences doesn't make what she says SMART nor INTELLIGENT. To think that Obama has an advantage in this race because he's black is ridiculous. Since when has a black man ever had an advantage politically for being black? If what she says is really true, then that's the first time in the history of America where such a miracle has ever happened.
Lets not get crazy about this issue. A smart woman made a dumb comment and is paying the price for it. Hillary had to drop her like a hot potato to save her campaign. Barack was right in challenging her words, and did so with class. The time has come to move on!
But before we do...please remember the difference between having a logical, intelligent disagreement and sounding as if you have a concussion. Ferraro clearly chose the latter in this case.

I support Obama, but would be happy to support the winner whomever that would be. But I think we need to take an honest and open look at this. Who in their right mind thought that if a black man ran for president, that the issue of race wouldn't come up? What we need to do is actually step back and look at whatever was said with a grain of salt. I have to say I don't believe Ferraro to be a racist. I don't agree with her, but I don't sense any racism in her. Maybe ill choosen words, but look at her record and what she has stood for in the past. One can be percieved to be over zealous in their support of their candidate, but there is a danger of taking it to far.
Take a look at it this way....I much rather would live in an age where it is better to vote for a black man, than that be a reason to vote against one.

RE: Martin
You seem to be a very smart person, however your logic is flawed. I can speak to that because I am originally from that area. More Republicans voted for Hillary than they voted for Republicans. It is not because they love her. On the contrary, they are voting for her in Mississippi as they did in Ohio as they will in Pennsylvania because they greatly desire to compete against her rather than Obama. In addition, they want the fight against her and Obama to last as long as possible to increase the chances of John McCain. No media outlet wants to discuss it because it seems so irrational. But trust me, there is NO WAY that significant number of Republicans in Mississippi (it was carried by Republicans in the presidential elections for the last 33 years) would support Obama or Clinton. If Clinton wins the nomination, there is NO WAY those people will vote for her. if you take a closer look, Clinton struggles when the primaries or caucuses do not have open voting and that Obama was leading among Republican votes prior to McCain gaining the nomination.
Posted by: K-Los | March 13, 2008 10:10 AM
Cissy--
I think your analysis is myopic, to say the least. The Obama campaign is in not a PC Smear Machine. Ms. Ferraro belittled Mr. Obama's candidacy as fulfilling a racial quota, just as she has in the past with regard to Jesse Jackson. She has even pigeonholed herself in the past as a "token" with regard to her VP candidacy with Walther Mondale. This woman has REPEATEDLY proven herself to have all the sensitivity of a cactus with regard to race and gender relations. Go ahead and complain about the "PC Police" all you'd like, the facts will remain: BOTH Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton are trailblazers for the Democratic nomination being an African-American man and a woman, respectively. Both these constituencies have never been represented at this level as actual contenders for the Office of the President of the United States of America. HOWEVER, not once has the Obama campaign made Mrs. Clinton's gender an issue whereas the Clinton campaign has CONTINUALLY thrown racial barbs in his direction.
Posted by: Zak | March 13, 2008 10:11 AM
Senator Obama has never called Geraldine Ferraro a racist. His words were (I heard them directly) "ridiculous" and "wrong-headed". He further stated that contrary to the claims of GF, he did not consider himself "lucky" to have his paricular name and to be African AMerican. In other words, he has worked hard and has skills and talents that have, so far, worked for him with the voters.
So, let's not give in to hyperbole as to what Senator Obama said.
Although I personally believe that GF's statements were racially offensive, this is my personal opinion, not one that Senator Obama has expressed.

I am tired of references to Obama being ahead because this unified Black voting bloc. How did this bloc help him win Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Nebraska, North Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Wyoming? Many by double digit margins. Considering all of the folks who have gotten "experience" in the past seven years under the current administration, is experience really what we want? That would mean Dick Cheney would be the most viable candidate, by his experience... Is that the arguement Hillary really wants to run with? Republicans are chomping at the bit hoping she can find a way to "win" this primary race.
Posted by: effaridi | March 13, 2008 10:12 AM
Nothing but a ploy to link Obama with Jackson and make him the "BLACK" candidate. And Clinton is working for WHITE votes and the Republicans are right behind her because SHE (and Bill) will be an easy Kill in November.
Voting for her just about guarantees the Republicans the Whitehouse for 8 more years of what we have right now.
What is sad is that the PEOPLE want Barack, the only person left who is a regular citizen who has worked from the ground up. He is a REAL American and thats why folks like his speeches. It helps to KNOW what you are talking about.

The thing that i don't like about Clinton, is that whenever she is accused of anything, she always invoke someone else (for example, "You voted for the war", she says, "Well, me along with XXX, and XXX voted for the war...."), "What do you think about Ferraro's comments", she says, "Well, Senator Obama has supporters who have said things as well", "Why did you vote for the Iranian Nuclear Proliferation...",..."Well,me along with Senator X, and Senator X, thought it was a good idea". It is quite annoying.

She's apologizing for what other people said? What about agreeing that Obama is not a Muslim "as far as I know" and "I take his word for it." That to me seems far more insidious than anything Ferraro or Bill said, whatever their intentions (which might not have been racIST but certainly were deliberately calling attention to race in order to divide). The Muslim lie is more underground, more divisive, and Hillary is encouraging it.
As for the Mississippi statistics, I understand that a significant number of Republicans now feel free to vote for the Democrat they think can most easily be beaten, and many of them, mostly white, did so in Mississippi. It's not increasing racism, but increasing Hillary hate.

Cissy -- do you really believe what you typed? Geraldine Ferraro explicitly stated that the only reason the Barack Obama was succeeding was because he was black. Not because he is smart, a gifted speaker, talented, has a grass roots campaign, is better organized, etc. - just because he was black. Unfortunately, race and bigotry is still a big problem for America and it will (unfortunately) play a big part in this election. America as a whole want the change the Obama is speaking of - you know, the bi-partisan cooperation that he seems to be able to garner, but and this is a big but - - America is afraid of having a person of color bring about that change. It would under-cut all of the stereotypical nonsense that has been passed on for decades. HRC and her operatives will seize on this fear and angst that is out there and use it to their advantage to try and beat Obama in the primaries. If he is the nominee, then the Republican party will use the EXACT same tactics against him.

Plain and simple it's a ridiculous statement that Ferraro made. Whether it was intentional or unintentional. We should all be responsible for our words and as a seasoned politician, she should know better. Her words are divisive and insulting. To imply that the only reason Obama is there is because of race is as ridiculous as saying that the only reason Clinton is there is because of gender. Both are equally talented, bright and intelligent people. The point is who do we think has the better temperment to be President. Has any former President had on the job training prior to the first day. Get real, the real experience starts on day one and not a day before. It's an awesome task, one to not be taken lightly or casually. If either candidate or political observer thinks that either candidate would be a good choice for the others' VP, then they should be equally ready to be President. Isn't it the job of the VP to step in and become President if something happens to the current sitting President? Lets take the race and gender issues out of this election and vote for the person. Damn!

At her age, with decades of political involvement, Ferraro should know that controversial statements made by public figures evoke a response. It's just simple cause and effect. Ferraro's age should afford her measured wisdom, not brash ignorance. Perhaps senility is to blame. Or maybe she is just to thick-headed to realize what she is doing.

I have had it with the Pro-Obama business. His followers need to get a grip on reality. An Obama nomination is a McCain win in the general. And what do you even know about your candidate? They say Obama is from the southside of Chicago. No wait, he's from Kansas. No wait, he's from Hawaii. No wait, he grew up in Indonesia, he's black, he's white, Kenyan. He can't even get his story straight. And you think the Republicans won't rip him to shreds in the general? His wife is tougher than he is! The guys is a total wimp, he just seems too rehearsed for me. If he want's to preach, tell him to go to church. We need a no-nonsense politician as commander in chief, not a guy who likes to rip off speaches. Hillary is tougher, 100X more intelligent and more seasoned than any Democrat! Ferraro was right on the money, if he was a white guy with no experience & ties to Rezko and the crooks in Chicago politics, he'd be toast by now. But you followers & sheep that you are want to pretend that this guy has a chance in the general?? Welcome to the real world, your romance w/the prophet Obama is going to get us 4 more years of Republican rule. Get real, vote for Hill.

The Clinton campaign has been using race in code for two months now. All of this has been designed to make it about race so when some go to the polls, they vote for Hillary because of concerns that a black cannot win. Her apology is nothing more than an attempt that when the Clintons steal the nomination at the convention, they think blacks will forgive the Clinton campaign and vote for her. This "apology" is as false as anything else by the Clintoons.
Posted by: John D | March 13, 2008 10:56 AM
Shouldn't Hillary be apologizing to all Americans, regardless of their race or skin color, since what she is apologizing for impacts us all.
Her apology to Blacks is a continuation of her campaign's "slicing and dicing" of the American people for to drive a wedge between various races and groups.
She is still playing the divide and conquer game.

Tex, then explain one thing: why did +90% of blacks, both early ballot voters (pre-Ferraro) and in-person voters vote for Obama? Do you actually think for one single solitary moment, you can convince most thinking people that it was not in most part because of race? Hmmmm? Most people are not that naif. Those poll numbers point only to a racial vote by blacks. Call it 'race pride' or some other euphemistic bullsh-t, but voting as a racial bloc like that is what it is (simple reverse racism) and to pretend otherwise insults the instincts and intelligence of most voters.
This is simply turning out to be the Harold Washington campaign all over again.

Hillary and Bill Clinton have made a significant issue about how the press is treating Hillary unfairly in their hyper-critical reporting on her and their “softball” reporting on Barak Obama. Hillary maintains she has been fully investigated by the media and Barak hasn’t! As the Tony Rezko trial begins in Chicago, Clinton and her surrogates are linking Obama to Rezko and the media is speculating about whether Obama will be called to testify as a witness in the case. Obama has always admitted he received $85,000 in contributions from Rezko which Obama has now donated to charity rather than keep. Yet the civil fraud trial of Bill Clinton for defrauduing Hillary’s largest donor in 2000 into giving her campaign more than $1.2 million, pending in Los Angeles courts since 2003, is now preparing for a November, 2008 trial. The discovery that is now proceeding after a February 21 hearing, and the pending trial, have NEVER been announced by the mainstream media. Hillary was able to extricate herself as a co-defendant in the case in January, 2008 after years of appeals to be protected by the First Amendment from tort claims arising out of federal campaign solicitations she made. Her abuse of the intent of California’s anti-SLAPP law after the California Supreme Court refused to dismiss her from the case in 2004 is emblematic of her contempt for the Rule of Law. Hillary will be called as a witness in both discovery and the trial according to the trial court Judge who so-advised Hillary’s attorney David Kendall when he dismissed Hillary as a co-defendant in 2007. A subpoena is being prepared this month and will be served personally on Hillary, along with Chelsea, Pa Gov. Ed Rendell, Al Gore and other well known political and media figures. Yet the media has refused to report about this landmark civil fraud case- brought by Hillary’s biggest 2000 donor to her Senate race, regarding allegations that were corroborated by the Department of Justice in the criminal trial of Hillary’s finance director David Rosen in May, 2005. That indictment and trial was credited as resulting from the civil suit’s allegations by Peter Paul, the Hollywood dot com millionaire Bill Clinton convinced to donate more than $1.2 million (according to the DOJ prosecutors and the FBI) to Hillary’s Senate campaign as part of a post White House business deal with Bill. The media - except for World Net Daily- has also suspiciously refused to report on Hillary’s last FEC report regarding her 2000 Senate campaign, filed in January 30, 2006. In a secret settlement of an FEC complaint by the plaintiff in Paul v Clinton, Peter Paul, the FEC fined Hillary’s campaign $35,000 for hiding more than $720,000 in donations from Paul, and it required Hillary’s campaign to file a 4th amended FEC report. In that report Hillary and her campaign again hid Paul’s $1.2 million contribution to her campaign and falsely attributed $250,000 as being donated by Paul’s partner, Spider Man creator Stan Lee, who swore in a video taped deposition he never gave Hillary or her campaign any money. Lee did testify to trading $100,000 checks with Paul to make it appear he gave $100,000 to Hillary’s campaign (admission of a felony) but none of that has been reported by the “overly critical” media! Where is the outrage from Obama that the press is engaging in a double standard relating to his possible role in the Rezko trial and his refunding the $85,000 contributed to his campaign by Rezko- which Obama has always admitted taking. The media makes no mention of Hillary’s role as a witness in Bill’s fraud trial for defrauding Hillary’s largest donor- and Hillary’s refusal to refund the $1.2 million she illegally received from Paul, which she has denied taking from Paul ever since the Washington Post asked her about Paul and his felony convictions from the 1970’s before her first Senate election in 2000? My personal position was that she was reducing Obama's campaign to race only; that he is in the lead because all of the blacks are voting for him. As far as I know, African Americans are approximately a 20% minority of the US population. Even if Obama received every black vote he would still be woefully behind. Ferraro dismissed a US Sentaor based solely on the color of his skin even though he has won, albeit only Democratic votes, some of the whitest states in thr union. Every one is focusing on the latest primary which was Mississippi.
If someone wanted to dismiss Hillary, then they could say that she only is where she is because she is married to a former US president. She held no elective office until she chose to run in New York. Previously no one had any idea who they were. Do you honestly believe that people would remember the former first lady of Arkansas (the 30-something most populous state in the US) 20 years later and then vote for her in the NY senatorial race? Of course not, but she ran in NY because it was favorable to the Democrats and the seat could be won. She had done nothing before the White House.
They both are where they are because of their experiences to date and their ability to campaign because as far as I can tell there is very little difference in their policy positions.

Nice quote from Ferraro in a 2006 NYT article:
“All evidence is that a white female has an advantage over a black male — for reasons of our
cultural heritage,” said the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, the civil rights leader who ran for president in
1984 and 1988. Still, he said, for African-American and female candidates, “It’s easier —
emphatically so.”
Ms. Ferraro offered a similar sentiment. “I think it’s more realistic for a woman than it is for an
African-American,” said Ms. Ferraro. “There is a certain amount of racism that exists in the United
States — whether it’s conscious or not it’s true.”
“Women are 51 percent of the population,” she added.

Too little too late from the junior senator from New York. The Clinton campaign did this to raise the specter of Affirmative Action in the minds of the white voters of Pennsylvania. Her campaign has been race-baiting since supertuesday. You've got President Clinton's comments in South Carolina, Senator Clinton not denying Obama is a Muslim, the Clinton campaign circulating pictures of Obama in African dress. The Clinton's racial politics make me sick. If she somehow steals the nomination I will be a Republican for life. They may be racist, but at least they don't pretend they aren't.
Posted by: Paul | March 13, 2008 11:40 AM
It's not just Obama,I was offended by the comment, so let's please stop making it out to be Obama's camp, that's some how brain washing us! I don't think Clinton or Ferrero is racist but again when i heard her comments, i was shocked that a woman as bright as she didn't would say something that could obviously be preceived the wrong way. I think we all should just choose are words more wisely
Posted by: Mykayla | March 13, 2008 11:44 AM
I do not think HRC is a racist, I just think she is an extraordinarily devious manipulative politician. She will do whatever it takes to win, like dropping little 'race bombs' and denying culpability, if you don't think that some of these attacks make some white voters rethink their support for Obama you are very naive. Of course she weakly apologizes or fires a surrogate and the issue goes away until the next incident. Is that really what you want for POTUS? As far as Ferraro, she is either nuts or a true racist, her remark about Obama was nothing new, in 1988 she said "If Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn't be in the race," (source washington post)
By the way I am a 60 year old white female and life long democrat who wanted to support a female candidate for the presidency, but not this woman; I care more about my country than I do about the 'ideal' of electing a woman. There will be another time, for now I will support the only candidate who stands apart and is not bought and paid for by corporate interests- Barack Obama

KEITH FROM MSNBC WAS RIGHT!!
KEITH OLBERMANN: Finally, as promised, a special comment on the presidential campaign of the junior senator from New York. By way of necessary preface, President and Senator Clinton and the senator's mother and the senator's brother were of immeasurable support to me at the moments when these very commentaries were the focus of the most surprise, the most uncertainty and the most anger. My gratitude to them is unbiding.
Also, I am not here endorsing Senator Obama`s nomination, nor suggesting in it is inevitable. Thus I have fought with myself over whether or not to say anything. Events insist.
Senator, as it has reached its apex in their tone deaf, arrogant and insensitive reaction to the remarks of Geraldine Ferraro, your own advisers are slowly killing your chances to become president. Senator, their words and your own are now slowly killing the chances for any Democrat to become president. In your tepid response to this Ferraro disaster, you may sincerely think you disenthralling an enchanted media and righting an unfair advance bestowed on Senator Obama. You may think the matter has closed with Representative Ferraro's bitter, almost threatening resignation letter.
But, in fact, senator, you are now campaigning as if Barack Obama were the Democrat and you were the Republican. As Shakespeare wrote, senator, "that way madness lies." You have missed a critical opportunity to do what was right. No matter what Miss Ferraro now claims, no one took her comments out of context. She had made them on at least there separate occasions, then twice more on television this morning. Just hours ago, on "NBC Nightly News," she denied she had made the remark in an interview, only at a paid political speech.
In fact, the first time she spoke them was 10 days before that California newspaper published them, not in a speech, but in a radio interview. On February 26, quoting, "if Barack Obama were a white man, would we be talking about this as a potential real problem for Hillary. If he were a woman of any color, would he be in this position that he's in? Absolutely not."
The content was inescapable. Two minutes earlier, a member of Senator Clinton's finance committee, one of her Hill-Raisers had bemoaned the change in allegiance by super delegate John Lewis from Clinton to Obama and also the endorsement of Obama by Senator Dodd; "I look at these guys doing it," she had said, "and I have to tell you, it`s the guys sticking together."
A minute after the color remark, she was describing herself as having been chosen for the 1984 Democratic ticket purely as a woman politician, purely to make history. She was, in turn, making a blind accusation of sexism and dismissing Senator Obama`s candidacy as nothing more than some equal opportunity stunt.
The next day, she repeated her comments and a reporter from the newspaper in Torrence, California heard them; "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. If he was a woman of any color, he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is and the country is caught up in the concept."
And when this despicable statement, ugly in its overtones, laughable in its week grip of the facts, and moronic in the historical context, when it floats outward from the Clinton campaign like a poison cloud, what do the advisers have their candidate do? Do they have Senator Clinton herself compare the remark to Al Campanis (ph) talking on "Nightline" on Jackie Robinson Day about how blacks lack the necessities to become baseball executives, while she points out that Barack Obama has not gotten his 1600 delegates as part of some kind of affirmative action plan?
Do they have Senator Clinton note that her own brief period in elected office is as irrelevant to the issue of judgment as is Senator Obama's, while she points out that FDR had served only six years as governor and state senator before he became president? Or that Teddy Roosevelt had four and a half years before the White House? Or that Woodrow Wilson had two years and six weeks?
Or Richard Nixon 14? And Calvin Coolidge 25?
Do these advisers have Senator Clinton invoke Samantha Power, gone by sunrise after she used the word monster, and have Senator Clinton say, this is how I police my campaign, and this is what I stand for, while she fires former Congresswoman Ferraro from any role in the campaign? No, somebody tells her that simply disagreeing with, then rejecting the remarks is sufficient. She should then call regrettable words that should make any Democrat retch.
And that she should then try to twist them, first into some pox on both your houses plea to stick to the issues, and then to let her campaign manager try to bend them beyond all recognition into Senator Obama's fault. And thus these advisers give Congresswoman Ferraro nearly a week in which to send Senator Clinton`s campaign back into the vocabulary of David Duke; "anytime anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says, let`s address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you`re accused of being racist, so you have to shut up. Racism works in two different directions. I really think they are attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"
How's that? Apart from sounding exactly like Rush Limbaugh attacking the black football quarterback Donovan McNab, apart from sounding exactly like what Miss Ferraro said about another campaign nearly 20 years ago, quote, "President Reagan suggested Tuesday that people don't ask Jesse Jackson tough questions because of his race. Former Representative Geraldine A. Ferraro said Wednesday that because of his, quote, radical views, if Jesse Jackson were not black, he would not be in the race."
So apart from sounding like insidious racism that is at least two decades old, apart from rendering ridiculous Senator Clinton`s shell game about choosing Obama as vice president, apart from this evenings resignation letter; "I am stepping down from your finance committee so I can speak for myself and you can continue to speak for yourself about what is at stake in this campaign. The Obama campaign is attacking me to hurt you."
Apart from all that, well, it sounds as if those advisers wanted their campaign to be associated with those words, and the cheap, ignorant, vile racism that underlies every syllable of them, and that Geraldine Ferraro has just gone freelance.
Senator Clinton, that is not a campaign strategy. This is a suicide pact. This week alone, your so-called strategists have declared that Senator Obama has not yet crossed some commander in chief threshold, but he might still be your choice to be vice president, even though a quarter of
the previous 16 vice presidents have become commander in chief during the greatest kind of crisis this country can face, a midterm succession, but you only pick him if he crosses that threshold by the time of the convention.
But if he does cross that threshold by the time of the convention, he will only have done so sufficiently enough to become vice president, not president? Senator, if the serpentine logic of your so-called advisers were not bad enough, now thanks to Geraldine Ferraro and your campaigns initial refusal to break with her, and your new relationship with her, now more disturbing still with her claim that she can now speak for herself about her vision as Senator Obama as some kind of embodiment of a quota if she wishes.
If you were to seek Obama as a vice president, it would be to Miss Ferraro some called of social engineering gesture, some kind of racial make good. Do you not see, senator?
To Senator Clinton`s supporters, to her admirers, to her friends for whom she is first choice and to her friends for whom she is second choice, she is still letting herself be perceived as standing next to and standing by racial divisiveness and blindness. Worse yet, after what President Clinton said during the South Carolina primary, comparing the Obama and Jesse Jackson campaigns, a disturbing but only border line remark, after what some in the black community have perceived as a racial undertone to the 3:00 a.m. ad, a disturbing but only borderline interpretation, and after the moments hesitation in her own answer on "60 Minutes" about Obama's religion, a disturbing but only borderline vagueness -- after those precedents, there are those who see a pattern. False or true, they see it. After those precedents, there are those who see an intent. False or true, they see it. After those precedents, there are those that see the Clinton campaign`s anything but benign neglect of the Ferraro catastrophe, falsely or truly, as a desire to hear the kind of casual prejudice which still haunts the society voiced, and to not distance the campaign from it.
To not distance you from it, Senator. To not distance you from that which you, as a woman, and Senator Obama, as an African-American, should both know and feel with the deepest of personal pain, which you should both fight with all you have, which you should both ensure has no place in this contest ever.
This, Senator Clinton, is your campaign and it is your name. Grab the reigns back from whoever has led you to this precipice before it is too late. Voluntarily or inadvertently, you are still awash in this filth. Your only reaction has been to disagree, reject, to call it regrettable. Her only reaction has been to brand herself as the victim and resign from your committee and insist she will continue to speak. Unless, senator, you say something definitive, the former congresswoman is speaking with your
approval.
You must remedy this and you must reject and denounce Geraldine Ferraro. Good night and good luck.

Geraldine was right. She shouldn't nor should anyone apologize for her words. This woman has worked tirelessly for the Dem. Party. Now the Obamanites with the help of media have smeared her. She's been threatened, and treated to the old slash and burn tactic. Axlerod knows Ms. Ferraro is not a racist but he labeled her as such anyway. Winning by these means is downright cruel.

24% of the people who voted for Hillary in Mississippi were Republicans. (http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/3/12/81339/4516/40/474909) This is not white people going for Hillary and blacks going for Barack. This is the Rush Limbaugh people trying to ruin the Democratic primary.

Lest anyone not realize it, what followed was actually nisleib posting yet another "I hate Hillary" rant.
While I have read criticisms of Obama and posted some myself, I have yet to see any Democrat post such hate filled messages against Barack. It shames me to be a Democrat to see so many in our party filled with the kind of hate that repubs specialize in. I don't object to people disagreeing with Hillary, but why the hate? I don't mean "dislike", I mean HATE!!!!
I'm glad I don't have to look in nisleib's mirror.

There are 2 history making candidates for the democratic nomination. I suppose it is understandable the media's fascination in parsing and analyzing ad nauseam the voter demograhphics. I think I understand the passion of black voters in their 85-90% support of Senator Obama. Validation of race and years of historic oppression are no doubt a large part of the appeal. To a much lesser degree (a little more than 50%), women embrace the candidacy of Senator Clinton. Yes, there are also racists and sexists out there who vote against a particular candidate due to hatred and fear. Bottomline, people vote for their candidate of choice for many illogical reasons, including race, sex, likability and beauty. Sadly, issues and qualifications to become the leader of the free world are not always at the top of everyone's list when voting. I am confident when I say that neither Bill nor Hillary Clinton are racists based on their history supporting black and other minority causes throughout their lives. I suspect that Ms. Ferraro is not a racist, either. It is clear that the candidacy of Senator Obama has elevated our collective sensitivity to any commentary regarding race. If this new awareness leads to people pausing to think before talking, then how is this a bad thing? No doubt, Ms. Ferraro could have made her commentary about race and politics in a more elegant and academic way and we probably wouldn't be brandishing her as a racist.

Geraldine Ferraro is right, this campaign is about race.
In Mississippi, Obama won 92% of the black vote. Hillary won 74% of the white vote.

Barack Obama has made his entire campaign about race. His slogan "change you can believe in" has huge overtones of come on let's have a black man as president though how inexperienced he is and have many people behind him controlling him. Even the way Obama talks imitating the way Martin Luther King Jr spoke, equiped with a southern accent and Obama is not even from the south. Please, I will appreciate if the African- American community accepts this apology and hopefully we shall never have to experience this kind of nefarious, diabolic, narrow-minded, retrogressively and callous campaigning tactics from the Clintons and their surrogates again.
It is such a shame to have her apologize over and over again about the many times they have tried relentlessly to dehumanize the person of Obama and the ethnicity he partially and or wholly represents.
The Clintons used to be considered as adopted family by the African-American to the extent Bill was referred to as the first black president. What ever happen to all those positive sentiments and symbiotic relationship has little to do with the person of Obama, but a lot to do with what Obama represents. Are the Clinton’s pretenders or real open-minded people? Is their showing that they used to be comfortable with the blacks all about political gain?
A leader unites and do not divide the people, because simple logic explain the strength of collective bargaining. I am so sad and very disappointed by the Clintons attitude to the blacks once Obama appeared on the nomination ticket of the Democratic Party presidential contenders. Even more disenchanted is the fact that Bill is an elder statesman who should never about the importance of nationalism and patriotism.
Hilary will continue to apologize over and over again, because sincerely her antecedents have manifested that, once she’s at the breaking point, she must resort to all kinds of tactics irrespective of its detrimental gravity to the quest for a united people and country, as long as she wins. She was at Tavis Smiley’s state of the black nation program in Louisiana early part of this year, where she apologize for the racial hatred and incitement Bill, her campaign and her have fomented in the country. Did that stop her from continuing in the same retrogressive and dangerously naïve and harmful way? The answer is a capital no.
Nevertheless in the spirit of reconciliation and moving forward, it is important for the black community to accept her apology and also hopes that she will not use such divisive and discriminatory tactics against Obama or any candidates at all.
Finally, the situation in New York over the resignation of Governor Eliot Spitzer should serve as an eye opener to a lot of Americans for various reasons. Firstly, do not take your power to lead for granted, by pursuing a life style that negates accountability, responsibility and Godliness. Secondly, no matter how highly placed you are, always remember, it is through the help and mandate of the people and not just by an individual talent or prowess alone and finally, the present Governor happens to be from a minority ethnicity, who least expected the turn of event. We have to be very careful as to what we wish for, otherwise it may come back to hunt us.
God bless USA
God bless Obama

This is astonishing to read. Senator Clinton clearly did NOT apologize.
"You know I am sorry if anyone was offended. It was certainly not meant in any way to be offensive," she said. This means that if offense was taken, it was not her fault.
She then changed the subject: "We can be proud of both Jesse Jackson and Sen. Obama," which she followed with a statement about Bill Clinton's public life.
These latter statements assure that Senator Obama and Jesse Jackson are necessarily discussed together because they are black, and [but?] we can be proud of them. And Bill Clinton's positive acts in the past override anyone's concerns about dirty politics.
This is astonishing. Senator Clinton is remarkably condescending and untrustworthy. Has she ever apologized honestly for anything?

Our president is as good as the advisors s/he selects. One might question whether these "right hands" are selected for their ability or their position in line for a favor from the candidate. Both sides have experienced failures in this area. During the campaign, it is not critical but in office it can, and has been, disastrous.
The candidates need to CAREFULLY select their counselors and spokespersons. True, Ferraro was not a "spokesperson" for Clinton, but clearly she was in a position to get the attention of the media.
Isn't it sufficient for the offender to apologize for her/himself? Following that, a simple announcement by the candidate accepting a resignation would exhibit a good deal more dignity and less panic.

Now she got it, her dirty campaigning is not helping
her win. To some exent it is contributing to her losses. People are like "wow that was mean and unfair why is she attacking Obama like that".This makes people think and start doing there homework. After educating themselves, they realize her platform or qualicatiions are not better than Obama's. Her "so called" experience that she is boasting about was during her first lady period. And to top it, she failed miserably on her universal healthcare reform and could not unify or inspire people to change or work with her.
We need a president that will make a change in our country and unify the parties not resort to misuse of power or power struggles. The bottom line is what is best for all Americans Rich, Middleclass, Poor, White, Black, Hispanic, Old, Young, Everyone! No one should be left out. Our chances are better with a novice!
It is harder for a person with set habits, ideas,or views to change them. Not impossible but very hard!

If we're going to truly unite the Democratic party for the much-needed win in November, we need to start sounding like it. Hillary's apology was, in fact, a non-apology, as Chris pointed out, but that's okay with me. Ferraro's remarks were benign, albeit completely inaccurate and misleading. But nonetheless, Hillary was right to state her disagreement and move on.
I'm an Obama supporter through and through, but I have no qualms with being 100% behind Hillary should she win. And since I'm in a state that's already voted, that's all that matters now.
Democrats need to stop vilifying the other candidate. They're both great, and either one would be more of an advocate for women, African-Americans, Latinos, muslims, glbts, immigrants, the working poor, single moms, single dads, poor students, the homeless, and the imprisoned, than we have seen in years and years.
Vote Democrat in 2008, period!

Senator Clinton is very very smart, very cagey and a successful politician... do not underestimate her or her ability to get votes. Polarizing groups of people will work to her advantage. Latinos, Blacks, Women, Whites, Muslums, etc. She knows exactly what she is doing. She brings up a "fear" and then lets us and all the press carry the water for her. When it is time to pull the lever and vote, a large segment of the population will vote for her because she has stoked some underlying fear in their mind, they won't remember the details just the fear. We need to remember that SHE stoked the fear in our minds. We should vote for candidtates that offer to unite us, to challenge us to do better and to offer us hope for the future.

"What? are you serious? why is there commentary when whites vote for a Clinton or other white candidate? Does anyone besided me notice that something is wrong when blacks vote 90% one way and no one seems to notice that just maybe there is a racial element to the voting pattern, what if whites voted by the same percentage for a white candidate? would that be racist also? I would really like to know why only whites can be considered racist but not blacks or others.'
BINGO!!!!

Obama has less experience than any presidential candidate in recent history? Yet, he has won so many caucuses and Southern States? Can't we try and understand why? Is that politically incorrect?
Why do other candidates with no experience not run for President? When 90% of his vote in a Southern State, which history has shown, and
the Republican rosters have shown, will likely be insignificant for a Democratic win. When only 15% of the General Population who will vote in a General Election, can't we ask why? Or is that politically incorrect?
Obama wrote in his own words, in his own book, that his father was from a wealthy Kenyan Family, and then he told the Democratic Convention, at his "coming out party" that his father grew up in a shack, later found to be a lie... Can't we ask why? Or is that politically incorrect?
Obama said in his own book, that he did Cocaine and other drugs, he said his father was Kenyan and not African American and that his family is Muslim, he took a picture in a turban, but the press is "not allowed to report on any of this". Obama constantly accuses Hillary of spreading rumors he is Muslim. Why would she? Obama spead the rumors in his books. Republicans talk about this all the time, because McCain would and could crush Obama. Why is it that Hillary is allowed by the press to look like "she did this to Obama".
Obama has been censuring the Press and Censuring Hillary from asking any questions based on race, drugs, religion. This is not usual and customary for a white, black, brown, yellow, purple, blue, or red candidate, why does Obama get special treatment?
Is it because he is backed by one of the most ruthless press agents in the USA, Axelrod? Is it because the press is scared of Obama and Axelrod Bully's the Press? How can we vet an inexperienced canidate like Obama? Should "Political Correctness" just give him a Free Pass into the white House" because that is clearly what he wants?
Obama is intentionally and in a calculating way creating racial strife in the USA.
Ferraro's comment was spun out of context. I heard her speach and she said that she had the advantage of being a VP in 1984, because she was a woman, and Obama has the advantage of being a Democratic Presidential candidate because he is black.

Here's a better idea for both sides (Democrat)
First let's get this race thing out of the way!!! Everyone knows both Obama and Clinton are people the whole world should be proud of both have withstood their obstacles and done it with class!
Now let's get down to the real reason for both Clinton and Obama: We need to get America on it's feet and out of this war. Next we need to put America proudly to work with the infrastructure.
Anyone whom is still in the Fifties Mentally retardation since slavery should disclude themselves... Yes we all know yoiur reasons (YOUR PARENTS TAUGHT YOU! SHAME ON YOUR PARENTS FOR PUTTING MOLD ON YOUR BRAIN!) Let's grow up as the America we should be! You will find that all "blacks and whites" (Hopefuly I am PC)need to realize that we are to treat our neighbors as our brothers (okay I am guilty toobut we both need to grow and this is stagnation for our nation to think this way.)
I beleive that Hillary and Barach have their qualities, i have only heard of Hillary's plan. Barach on that debate you looked rather like you were taking notes and that's okay. You are still young and don't stop learning because you are the pick after Hillary is done. In the mean time go for congress and learn the ropes there. You are a good man and nothing wrong with getting better too.
I wish this wonderful country would realize that blacks werent the first to be slaves or mistreated. I happen to be white and get mistreated and was inslaved once myself. Hate isn't the way out!!! UNITY IS!
American Indians are also mistreated What do they do. Segregate themselves. That isn't good either but we took their land and murdered their forefathers.
Wanting a free ride doesn't get one too far. Fore one it gives you an appitite for making the world a better place.
America went into the arabic countries and mistreated them too that's why there is terror.
Bond together and allow those whom are different to be different. Remember when in their home to do their customs. You will find wealth better than money can buy... Fight and watch your taxes go down the drain!
If you want the later then you are a Republican. Do you see the damage when you go to get groceries?
Sincerely,
R Brown, observer

This has been completely blown away of proportion. Are we going to be walking on tenderfoot because Obama's black in fear of being called a racist???? Unbelievable! People are being hipocrites. Ferraro said what has been said over and over in blogland. I can't count the number of times that I have read how great it would be to have the 1st black president or how people can identify with Obama because he's black and he understands discrimination or other issues addressed by minorities. And that's not counting the thousands of blogs that are based on race. So please, Ferraro's comments have been blown out of proportion, especially since what she said was true, but naturally it isn't politically correct to say so. You know what we are to the world? A bunch of hipocrites! I've had it with this stupidity. Can we at least say that Obama is a man??? or would that be gender biased?

Hillary is not at all sincere in her so-called apologies.
Hillary will never truly disavow the comments of Ferraro, because it is all part of her scheme to subtlely remind white people that Barack is black, "so you need to think twice about voting for him."
The sad part of her and Ferraro is that their so called "35 years" and "40 years" respectively, of fighting for the downtrodden and African-Americans, has essentially be obliterated because they have committed the ULTIMATE BETRAYAL.
For those many decades as they claim, they essentially used black people to achieve their stature in American politics, and then when it appeared that blacks were not as grateful as they should be ("sorry, massa, for not playing like a good negro. . ."), blacks been thrown under the bus.
Geraldine Ferraro, like many of her ilk, including Gloria Steinem, Faye Waddleton, are not fools. They fully understand the undercurrent some of their comments raise and I believe it is all INTENTIONAL. And I believe Hillary is playing the race card so deftly because it's "death by a thousand cuts" for Obama. If she can subliminally get white voters to realize that they are, in fact, openly supporting a black candidate, they will "come to their senses" and vote for her.
Only a fool would think this stuff is unintentional. Hillary and Bill have been riding the wave of support from African-Americans for over 2 decades and when Hillary suddenly and unexpectedly found herself losing to Barack, she decided that all of that good will, all of that "holding of hands" w/ Black America hasn't gained her much, so she's throwing that so-called good will-- and the African-American constituency-- under the bus.
Being thrown under the bus is generally expected from Republicans and conservatives; in fact, they typically just run the African-Americans OVER with the bus, but coming from the Clintons, it's astonishing! Hillary and Bill created a public persona for three decades in the Black community that they "felt the pain" of the community; that they cared deeply for the African-American plight. But it was all a LIE. They have been hatching their plans for "his and hers Presidencies" since 1979. Bill admits this. But African-Americans were hood-winked into thinking that for all those years, the Clintons were on their side. Now they see they were actually be played; played like a Stradivarius by the Clintons. African-Americans were simple pawns in their chess match toward his and her Presidencies.
So the Vernon Jordans, Bob Johnsons, Maxine Waters, Charlie Rangels and other village idiots are now in a conundrum because they don't want to admit they were played, and are still afraid to come out against the Clintons. This culture or under-current of racism running through the Clinton campaign, starting w/ the MLK statements, then the Jesse Jackson statements, then the "he's not a Muslim, as far as I know" statements, now Ferraro's statements, and several others, have gone without being "checked" by the Clintons, which only confirms what we already know.. .
Hillary's motto is "I will say and do anything to get elected", but more importantly, "what
I've been saying all these years to the black community, forget it! It was all a ruse to get to the White House -- the moment you chose HIM over ME!"
Posted by: BrwnSknGurl | March 13, 2008 1:27 PM
Hillary betrayedthe Democratic party by supporting McCain over Obama. Hillary's campaign has made repeated attempts to play the race card and divide Democrats. Rush Limbaugh listeners followed his advice in Texas giving Hillary 9% of Republican votes. Now the race baiting begins anew.
Hillary continues to block her fiancial and experience records, an ethics complaint (for filing false financial disclosures with the US senate)is pending and the Clinton fraud trial is scheduled in November. No wonder the Republicans are anxious to run against her! And JFK lost the Ohio primary in 1960

what Senator Obama did last fall to pander to the black vote in South Carolina is unconscionable and unforgivable.
Senator Obama’s record has always shown complete, unwavering, and undeniable support for civil rights, gay and lesbian rights, abortion rights, etc. etc. etc.
So last fall, when he wasn't running so near the top, his playing of the race card was not on the radar screen for most of us.
“We're to believe that the fact that Senator Obama, alone among Democratic candidates, is willing to openly welcome bigots into his campaign makes him the best candidate for voters concerned about civil rights. And the corollary, the worst candidate for someone who cares about civil rights is the candidate who actually stands up against the bigots. So the best way to promote tolerance is to tolerate and embrace intolerance?"
Please all, if you have the chance read this article. For me, as a former Obama supporter, it was very enlightening, and sheds a lot of light on the playing of the race card in the south. Just because Senator Obama is black does not mean that he cannot be called to task for his actions.

Why is it when Louis Farrakhan spoke in support of Obama for president (unsolicited, I guess exercising his constitutional right), Obama immediately stated that he is not interested in accepting the endorsement of someone who holds racist views. Hillary was not satisfied with this and pushed the issue at a debate that and challenged him to denounce and repudiate this endorsement.
Keep in mind that we are talking about an endorsement, not a position and no comment at all about Hillary.
How is it that now Hillary will not address her campaign worker once again bringing race into the election. Over and over again. This is a self rightous group of people who will not look at themselves in the mirror. They make rules for themselves while holding other people to a much higher standard a standard they can only dream to achieve. (Similar to the former governor of NY.) What has frustrated the Clinton machine is that Obama chooses to keep his standard high.
The world according to Clintons. How dare you question us. Just shut up and take your medicine.

On media bias: would even the Hillary supporters acknowledge that if the tables were turned, and Barrack Obama has LOST 11 states in a row, trailed Hillary in the total vote count, states won and pledged delegates, that the cry for Obama to drop out would have been COMPLETELY OVERWHELMING. Why does Mrs. Clinton NOT have to answer the obvious, pertinent question: how are you going to win the nomination?
Even with your "big win" in Texas, you lost delegates on account of the caucus. You're at the point where you need to win every state by about 65%. That is, to say the least, EXTREMELY UNLIKELY to happen. So how are you going to win? Are you going to try to cajole the superdelegates to OVERRULE the will of the Democratic Party to which you ostensibly belong? Are you going to attempt to drag down and destroy the man that the majority of Democratic voters have supported throughout this primary campaign? Is there anything you WOULDN'T say or do to destroy Barrack Obama?
How else can you win, Mrs. Clinton? When's the last time this "victim" of tough media treatment had to answer a question like that, eh? Do you really think Mr. Obama would not have been compelled to withdraw from this race if the tables were turned?
-------------------------
It wasn't that long ago that the question was if Barrack Obama was "black enough" and it was CLINTON who was claiming the majority of black support in the early primaries.
I guess they were voting for Hillary back then because they thought she was a better candidate.
Then Bill Clinton flew off the handle and basically called South Carolina out as racist fools because, ya know, they'd also voted for Jesse Jackson in 1988.
Ever since then the overwhelming majority of blacks have voted for Obama. Of course, now they're simply practicing racial solidarity instead of voting for the candidate they thought would represent them best. Try not to forget, folks, Mrs. Clinton WAS that candidate less than 3 months ago.
The cynical side of says this is exactly what the Clinton campaign wants. I remember cringing on Super Tuesday when some states that Obama was winning were in part because of overwhelming African American support. That would be the deathknell of his candidacy.
What has sustained his momentum is his believable pledge to move towards a post-racial future. If blacks prefer Obama 4:1 and whites prefer Clinton 3:1 (and let's not forget that WOMEN have been supporting Hillary 2:1 also, but I'm sure THEY are just voting their conscience and not their gender), that disparity will likely lead on-the-fence voters to view Obama with much greater suspicion.
Hillary, you are a soulless, craven trainwreck. You cannot defeat Barrack Obama without OVERRULING the will of the people. You have turned your campaign into an absolute horror show. And of course your opponent, Senator Obama, has run just about the best upstart political campaign in modern history.
You have lost. Withdraw to the Senate and lead Congressional Democrats for the next generation. Sounds like a pretty good gig to me, and FAR better than what you deserve for the damage you insist upon doing to the Democratic Party to which you ostensibly belong.

African Americans are Americans folks. Get over it. Okay. They have not achieved equally becaused the governmnet instituted barriers to their upward mobility. This has changed, finally, in the last 40 years. As a result, the landscape of American is changing. Clearly, Obama did not bring up any Race issues. The facts are, when Hillary start loosing, she and her campaign and her husband start saying: white voters what are you doing. do you really want to put a "N" in the white house? It is the same fear that kept the Tennesse congressman from winning a Senate seat he would have won otherwise: Harold Ford. African Americans have been in this country since the founding fathers. They have fought in every war; labored to build everything in America. And they are good enough to be President of this country.
Who's fooling whom?
Posted by: American First | March 13, 2008 1:50 PM
Too bad Hilary's already apologizing. She and Geraldine had NOTHING to apologize for. Nor did Bill Clinton. Barack is running as a 'black' candidate.
Period.
And his 'blackness' has a LOT to do with why he's 'succeeding' in the race.
Cynical republicans who plan on voting for the repug candidate in the fall are another reason why he's succeeding' in the race.
It is a fairytale for him to say he's against the war. Look at his military earmarks--just released today.
Look at his votes FOR war funding.
Look at how he even went to CT to campaign for Joe Liebermann!

Funny, I missed Obama's apology for the race baiting his South Carolina staff openly engaged in.
Double-standards.
Posted by: Bemused | March 13, 2008 1:53 PM
Well apology does not matter. By Ferraro injecting race and Barack responding (taking the Clinton campaign bait) it is over for Barack. The Clinton campaign knew exactly what strings to pull and how to pull and Barack took the bait. His response should have been "I dont think the American worker who has lost their job cares if I am black or if Hillary is a woman, they want to know what I will do about the economy. My plan for the economy is....." Instead this has lasted a week b/c he bit into Clinton evil apple. She knows good and well his white supporters did not vote for him b/c he was black (I believe so). He is smart and is an agent for change. He has proven himself to be qualified. Obama knows this so why he responded to this tactic behooves me! He did not catch her bait when she tried to say blacks blame Hispanics for job loss. Obama stopped her and told her clearly not to scapegoat.
I am not saying Ferraro was right but the Dems are more racist than any party around. To clearly say Obama is here b/c he is black ties into the sterotype (that dems have instituted with policies like affirmative action) "black people only get jobs to fullfill a quota or b/c and most of them are not qualified."
The same party who touts equality is the same party bringing a qualified canidate down. I guarantee if McCain worker had said that there would be no end from dems like Clinton. I dont even think McCain would have use this tactice (He is to me, a nice, but FIRM man).
Clinton, sadly, will get the nod and as black people we should really consider why you are a democrat (I am not one). The democrats set up institutions to keep you down. They want you to be poor so that you can continue to elect them into office. Example cities with Dem mayors have the highest population of poor black people and yet they get the black vote. Wake up people. Just dont go and vote in November b/c Clinton is a dem, vote for issues you believe in. Think about where you live now and who is you mayor or governor. How is your state or city? How are ALL the citizens in your state or city treated? If you think about these things you will NOT vote for Clinton in November.

I don’t know why anyone is surprised at the Clinton campaign for trying to inject race into the rhetoric, it was a move I think everyone knew she would try. She certainly has tried everything else and I didn’t think she was going to give up without using every possible angle she could, including race bating. Of course we won’t know if it worked until the PA. primary, and she won’t know either, but if she wins by say a double digit lead expect to hear more. Personally I think it’s the wrong approach, and I hope she looses votes because of it. The RNC will be watching closely to see the reaction of voters and if it works for Hillary they’ll be using it against either of them in Nov.

The Clinton campaign seems blind to the fact that parents since the 1980s have been raising their children with the backdrop of one of the world's most effective advertising campaigns on the radar screens: the "United Colors of Benetton" advertising campaign, which had banners on buses and subways and in print showing children of all colors all over the world playing together and having a good time. So parents raised their children to be color blind. Certainly the Clintons raised Chelsea to be color blind, and that's the tragedy. The poised and brilliant and talented young woman she is today was molded by classrooms at her Quaker school in Washington DC, and at university at Stanford and at Oxford, that reflected diversity of cultural, racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds, and here her parents have allowed racial innuendo to “regrettably” be spoken repeatedly by now-fired campaign surrogates since last summer . It is to Chelsea Clinton’s contemporaries and to other young adults, young VOTING adults, and to their parents, that the Clinton campaign needs to apologize. Yes, Senator Clinton missed the moment to pick up the 3 a.m. call on racism but instead just let it ring and ring and ring.
A leader doesn’t follow focus group prejudices; instead, a real presidential leader leads both as a decision-maker, looking out for the best interests of his/her country and its citizens, and as a role model.
Senator Obama won the presidential leadership and the role model contest on this one.

I'm white, 50, and fairly well educated.
Most of my family and friends are voting for Obama. This is not because of his race as the Hillary group proclaims. We are strongly compelled to Obama because he is principled and has a clear message. Other reasons include his ability to cut through the chatter and use sound judgment. He also seemed to be destined to be a national healer: both in terms of political party affiliation and race.
Obama was well on the way to healing this nation from the deep divide Bush and the neocon thieves have fostered. It seems Hillary is doing the opposite: dividing the Democratic party using despicable, insidious fantasies. She and her group alone are responsible for the current fractured Democratic party. Their policy of “eating their own” is a disgrace. I hope in the end it does nothing more then honing Obama’s edge to face the McCain in 08.
At one time, we would have voted for Hillary if she won the nomination. Now, after the past 4 months of hearing Hillary's diatribe, there is nothing that would occur that would compel us to vote for her. I have never in my life voted for a Republican. As it stands, I will vote for McCain before Hillary if she is chosen. And forget the Hillary/Obama fantasy she hints at. Even if that were the case, I wouldn’t reward her disgraceful behavior. She would do well to become a Republican because that is how she is behaving.
Hillary mistakenly believes there will be a love fest if she wins and she will be a healer. This is a very dangerous assumption and they will be sorely mistaken. From everyone I have spoken with, black or white, young and old it doesn’t matter; most have been strongly offended and turned off by Hillary in the past 7 months and will not vote for her under any circumstances.
If Hillary plays this game out, in the end we will have to endure 4 more years of Republican incompetence and corruption. Such a pity, to see the Clinton’s go from the high point of appreciation when Bill left office in 2000 to this, killing their own… a pity.

I am very disappointed in Geraldine Farraro's remark about Barack Obama. I am convinced, as a Obama voter, that he would have blown Hillary Clinton out of the water a long time ago if he was a white man. However, nobody can dispute that he will make the best president - he is inclusive, and he has vision. Go Mr. Obama

Just remember Democrats, black or white, these are your fellow Democrats. Think about this. Examine this. Is this a party you want to belong to? You dont have to vote Democrat just because. Rise up and change that. Rise up and create a new party. If yall all stood together the Democratic party will fail and centrally be non-existence!
In addition, if I were Obama I would seriously leave the democratic party. They are clearly not living up to the standards they put in place (e.g. equality). That old democratic machine is outdated and needs to be laid to rest!

Better not criticize Obama, or his surrogates will call you a "Racist!"
When veteran Liberal Democrat Geraldine Ferraro is smeared as being "racist", is anyone, no matter how Liberal, safe from the PC/Obama smear machine?
Geraldine Ferraro didn't criticize his record, which is perfectly legitimate. She reduced his candidacy to race. She said if he was a white man or a woman he wouldn't be a president candidate. Why even go there?!!

BECAUSE what GF said is TRUE???!!!

"Since when has a black man ever had an advantage politically for being black? If what she says is really true, then that's the first time in the history of America where such a miracle has ever happened."
Just because something has never happened before does not make it in any way impossible.
With every election cycle, we are seeing more and more influence from 'the media'. To the point that, this year, they basically choose the Democratic front-runners before the campaign was even underway.
That had never happened before, but it happened. Along the way, Obama was given a pass on explaining his near-complete lack of a voting record, among other sordid details of his past. That very rarely happens when every piece of dirt dug up is worth money.
So, some of us are wondering why he's so special, and exempt from the same level of scrutiny as all the other candidates. Especially since almost nothing that his supporters like about him is actually true. But since every negative comment about him is shouted down with cries of "Racist!", he just sails along.
Personally, I don't know who is behind that, or why, but it certainly seems possible that it's because he's black. Whatever the reason, you can't seriously argue that he hasn't been treated with kid gloves since day 1. He got away with explaining his 17-year association with a known felon as a 'boneheaded mistake'.
Can you imagine the hue and cry if any other candidate said that?
Posted by: David Hillman | March 13, 2008 3:00 PM
People, don't buy this line of crap you're being fed about black voters putting Obama over the top. The state of Mississippi is 63% white and 37% black. They have 4 congressional districts, 1 is 50/50, one is majority black and two are majority white. How does anyone derive that black voters are getting him in?
This is spin, people. The vast majority of the deep south is WHITE with a capital W. Obama never mentions race, except to defend himself. The ONLY one who brought race into it was Clinton's campaign First her husband, then Ferraro.
Unless you're a bigot, there's no need to even dignify this garbage with a second thought. And those who try to spin it that Obama is playing the race card, are sad supporters of Has-Been-Hillary.
After this debacle, and the way she, and those around her acted, not only is this run over, but so is her political career.
Please, we need a country united not divided. I think we all see where divisiness got us. Obama at least understandas that we'll NEVER change what's wromng in washington unless we the people stand TOGETHER and say "WE'RE MAD AS HELL AND WE'RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!"
At any rate, whoever gets in is screwed and will probably be a one term president unless they are absolutely phenomenal.
But I'll tell you, conditions in this country will get far worse before they get better, and if someone can't bring us together, this country is doomed.
Line up early for the World Food Program distribution truck because it is always first come, first served. And believe me, by next January, the last thing we'll need to worry about is health care.

And I mean that, it was one of the first nice things I've heard her say since the last debate.
Hate to say but I'm still concerned about some last minute skulduggery but if the existing and remaining votes go her way in a natural process I'd consider supporting her if she keeps this vein going.
If Barack wins I would hope to see their support come back too.
Either way, all these "personal" attacks need to fade away because all we're doing is the Republicans work for them, and this IS a year a Democrat should win it all.

Steve | March 13, 2008 2:30 PM - Great Post!
This kind of post gives me HOPE for AMERICA!

When the Irish all voted for John F. Kennedy, did CBS, ABC and NBC harp on it all day and night? Sure, African Americans are going to vote for Obama. This is the first time in their sordid history of this nation that the Declaration of Independence and Constitution for which they have longed for has given them a since of hope that they to are accepted as Americans. Why wouldn't they want to make this History. African Americans if you recall voted overwhelmingly for "slick Willy", and every Democratic Presidential candidate since Franklin D.Roosevelt who as a people they loved. So, get off this blacks are being racist for voting for Obama; there is a difference and you no it. I bet most Italians would have voted for Rudy Gulliani too; only because of the novelty of a Italian having a shot at being president. So, don't twist a historical event. Race would never have been in this campaign if not for the Media( who'll do anything for a story) and Hillary and Bill.

Steve writes...
"Most of my family and friends are voting for Obama. This is not because of his race as the Hillary group proclaims. We are strongly compelled to Obama because he is principled and has a clear message."
Steve, what principles? Compare the wonderful things he says he'll do on his web-site with his actual record. He's nothing but a talker. He has passed 1 bill in the US Senate. 1. He's missed more votes than almost anyone, and on the rare occasion that he shows up to work, he votes 'present'. Check it out -> http://www.govtrack.us/
What message? Oh yeah, "Change hope change". What is he going to change? How? Why didn't he start in Illinois?
I continue to be amazed by people who seem completely and totally unable to do the most basic research on a candidate, yet have such strong views.

Ferraro made an unnecessary and undignified comment, pure and simple. And anyone who thinks it was said spontaneously is missing the point.
Appealing to the lowest common denominator in people is nothing new. If that is to change, more people need to get involved in the system. That is what Obama brings to the table.

hum, Hillary, Ferarro, Streisand? Looks like the crazy old rich white women are all banding together. Scary!

Are Condolezza, Oprah, Tiger, MJ, Tiger, etc, all lucky? Are their achievements to be preferenced with the hypothetical "IF"?
The aforementioned individuals have all taken a page from the conservative notebook and COMPETED to win.
If Tiger Woods were a Caucasion male, how would his achievements be rated? Tiger doesn't care. To him it's about the "W".
Barack Obama is prying open the windows of the past through which we can escape the stench of racism. I believe that this is what he speaks of when he speaks of hope.

The secret to not being called a "racist" is to NOT refer to another person's race. That's a no brainer. Ferraro could have said many things such as his upbringing has gotten him where he is, or his education. But NOOO, she chose refer to his blackness. Shame on her and anyone who agrees with her.

Black people must not be fooled by the Clinton soft shoe routin and her ability to seems sorry for the comments from Ms. Ferraro over the last few days.
If she was so concerned why didi she come out right after the first staement from Ferraro and denounce and reject her comments.
When asked if she (Clinton) was sorry she stated that I did make those comments and now she spent time yesterday with the Black Media looking all sad and being apologetic, this is a joke and a scam and black people should not be fooled but her act, In early Feburary her campaing strategist Mark Penn sent an email to the media stating that Clinton will nolonger go after Black voters because of how she lost South Carolina and from that point on she would only go after the white voters.
She thinks she still has clout in the "Hood" I don't think so, She only apologized because she was called out by the Black Media yesterday to explain why she has taken so long to affirmativly move away from Ferarao's comments.
As usual she performed well with deception and more lies. When during the week of the New Hampshire primary she started to cry and say Tear I have so many "Privilages" in my life" that was nothiing short of code for don't let this black man beat me again tear, tear.
You know the results of that one and she made a key statement recently saying It's hard out there for a women, 2 things happened here' ; 1. She injected gender / sexisim and 2. she showed no remorse or desire to seperate herself from the Ferraro statements
until she was called out by the black Media and now she is beaing soft, when asked if she would aplogize for Ferarao;s statement two days ago she stated that "I didn't make the comment" clear defiance just as Ferraro about the issue she herself created and when confronted with the same question by a black reported during the meeting she was very "Apologetiic" for sure.
She is selling snake oil to the black community, reject her , denounce her and in a big way and send them message that her and her campaigns behavior is not acceptable to the folks in the Hood.

Thank you for the reply.
Your issues concerning research and voting are invalid. Most representatives miss votes while campaigning. Don’t blame them, blame the system. In fact, Hillary has missed more votes then Obama.
Oh, and about him just giving a speech or two, he does give very compelling speeches. There were only a few representatives who had the clarity of mind and courage to speak against the Bush invasion mania driven war machine. Obama had the courage to be one of them. That in and of itself stands out. Most other Democrats in the 109th congress were as useless as the Republican, Hillary being one of the ineffective cowards at that moment.
Call Obama what you may in an attempt to distract from this strengths, but he is the type of leader who can begin the long process of taking this nation out of its current wretched condition.

"I am sorry if anyone was offended. It was certainly not meant in any way to be offensive."
- HRC
Remember, folks, Clintons measure their words ("is," etc.) carefully.
So here's my take.
"I'm sorry if you were offended, but neither I nor anybody associated with me was 'offensive.' If you were offended that is because of how you perceive things. Not because of how what we intend."
Well, you got to hand it to them. Enough U.S. Senators in the Democratic Party thought Bill really wasn't lying under oath and that, therefore, he didn't really break the law and that, as top law enforcement of the land, wasn't worth being removed from office.
Well, as GW says, ""Fool me once... shame on...uh... shame on you... Fool me twice...er... uh... you can't fool me again."

My I have a Dream series comes from actual dreams I had in college in the early nineties. I did have a series of dreams in which I was Martin Luther King, Jr. From those dreams, I began to realize my own issues of feeling enslaved and struggle with civil rights.
During the last month, I have posted, anonymously, some I have a Dream segments. Here is a sample to inspire all of those people who realize that Civil Rights is why our Founding Fathers started the American Revolution.
I have a dream: In my dream I am Martin Luther King, Jr. and in my dream, I am going to take you all the light at the end of the tunnel and learn what I have learned from the milleniums of spirit guides who have given me the wisdom to be the spirit guide you can call upon for guidance in the hour of your souls revelation of what freedom means. Freedom is not speech. Freedom is not religion. Freedom is not politics. Freedom is your freedom to be who you are in the moment, being in the light of God's creation. Freedom is the freedom to co-create the world from our dreams and manifest them in the world.
Hillary, I am with you in spirit.

I think this election has turned to race and not political wisdom. Who is able to end war no one without the support of congress. Who is able to raise wages or lower taxes no one without the support of congress. So each canidate can promise what they want but I willing to bet money that nither one call fullfill what they say without congress support. Also I do beleive Obama is prejidice just look at his Church web site and hear what the media has caught his pastor saying. Obama says that he is not a supporter of everything his pastor says or does so why does he continue to go to Church there. Also Lewis Farakahn (spelled incorrectly) supports Obama and we all know sho he is for and it is not The white race for sure. I have decided that it is almost better to move to another country than live in a disfuctional America anymore. Although I will continue to live here and wait on God to send down his wrath on such a corrupt place.

It was fun to listen to Air America today and listen to the lefty talkers bashing Geraldine Ferarro and the Clintons as racists -- comparing them to Pat Buchanan and Rush Limbaugh.
They evenwent so far as to bash Franklin Delano Roosevelt for having as little foreign policy experience as the Junior Senator from Illinois -- conveniently overlooking the fact that liberal hero, FDR, had been Secretary of the Navy.
It is funny to see the radical left self-destruct.

My retort to Ms. Ferraro: If Barack Obama were a woman where would Hillary Clinton be. Answer: Behind by an additional 200 delegates and still feeling entitled the nomination she does not deserve.
Is that acceptable Tony?
Posted by: Ron Hussein | March 13, 2008 8:33 PM
Geraldine Ferraro was liberal as long as it suited her best interests to be so. It helped her gain votes, and gain a spot as Mondale's running mate. The only thing is, the veil was removed when Obama made the dastardly mistake of doing better than Hillary this election season. When Hillary's "entitlement" to the presidency became threatened, the cloak was cast aside and Geraldine showed what she really is, a "subjective" liberal who is only one when circumstances suit her....

This is a Big Game for Obama. All the pols say he got 50% - 90% of the African American vote. Does he deny that statistic? Id he experienced? If some White guy with good Oratory skills who had spent virtually no time in the Senate wanted to run for President would it be Historic? Whe all know the answer is no it would not be historic. Obama knows it is historic for one reason and that is because he is Black.
This whole race thing is a big game for Obama because it's a slow news week and he is always gunning for Hillary, while at the same time he accuses her of throwing the kitchen sink. What shocks me is that the medai even let's him stir this up.
I think he does it to Bully the Press and Bully the party and I have never seen a candidate so divisive as Obama. Who cares if he's Black. When a candidate has no experience the press has a right to look at the reason's why he is so pppular and Obama knows why, and the people know why.
If Deval Partrick or Colin Powel was running in this race I'm sure Ferraro would not have said that. She said it because Obama is someone with not track record and that is unprecidented for a modern Presidetial candidate. The reason his canidacy is historic in WHY? Can I say it without being accused of being racist?
I like Jesse Jackson because he is real and speaks his mind and really works to make changes happen for the African American community. I'm proud of Jesse Jackson, and Martin Luther King, and Colin Powel but Obama is a game player, a show boater,a moderate who is too cowardly to take a position on anything because he may not be able to pivot tomorrow, and take a new position depending on the crowd. Obama is a shifty, newcomer, with an empty platform, and his candicacy is historic, why?
I'm glad Hillary apologized to the African American community so that they are assured she is not racist. Hillary has done more for African Americans than Obama ever has or probably ever will. He votes like a Hawk and pretents to be for Peace. He created this impression that Ferraro was racist which she certainly is not why? For personal ambition and nothing else.
He has thugs that work on Yahoo answers 24/7 creating lies about Hillary like the Clinton's are a death squad and Hillary and Spitzer are going to jail for 5 years because they run a protitution ring. Obama will stop at nothing to win. he is not someone the African American community should be proud of. He is a liar and a cheat.
I learned this because at first I was impressed with him, then started reading about him a lot, and realized his whole history and who he claims to be is a scam, and his bloggers place so many post they will snow you.
READ & READ about Obama and you will realized he is about selling b ooks, and making no waves and talking a lot but doing nothing that is new or different. He's backed by Mayor Daly's political machine, and Rezko and Banls and investment companies.
This whole race issue is to get news and make Hillary look bad. The guy is a scammer. Don't take my word for it, read, and read, and you will realized he is fooling US all. Obama is about Obama.

Stating Obama’s candidacy is historic because he is black dilutes reality and is a dishonest tactic. He is actually a well educated, eloquent, and sophisticated senator running for president; he just happens to be of African American descent. He also displays unparalleled judgment in his decisions. For the most part, he has an outstanding record. Yes, he is part black, so what? Remember, white folk such as myself are voting for him right along our fellow human beings who happen to be of African American descent. And honestly, I have not yet met any caucasians who are voting for him because he is black. As a least common denominator, he is the least dangerous candidate. But Obama is so much more then that, we all know he is if we are honest within ourselves. The problem is, America has forgotten what truth is. We have spin doctors, disingenuous pundits, and talking heads on the evening news. There are very few avenues for truth in our society giving pathways to corrupt fantasies and “spin”.
Personally, I’ve been waiting a long time to see such a beautiful person run for office. There is no doubt, he will make a lot of mistakes as any president will. But look at our options. In the past 16 years, Hillary has been unable to significantly alter legislation she claims she holds so dear. She as also become a monster who enjoys “eating her own” (even the republicans don’t display such behavior as she does). McCain and the neocons wants Halliburton in Iraq for another 100 years. Really, what are our options.
For the first time in a long time, I and my circle of family & friends are voting for Obama not because we are voting against someone, but we are voting FOR him. Any person who has gone through what he has in his live, and is able to possess such an inner core of dignity is a beautiful human and we would all be very fortunate to call him Mr. President.
I’m not religious, I don’t go to church, but God Bless Barack and Michelle Obama, and good luck. And, while we are at it, pray for people like Hillary, Bill, and Geraldine Ferarro, they have lost their way and need to do some serious soul searching. If we really get to the truth of the matter, we could clearly see Obama is focused on dealing with the issues and the problems of America. It is the Clinton candidacy who continues to bring up race in an effort to stop talking about the issues such as the disastrous invasion of Iraq, Nafta, poverty, health care and the economy. It is obvious to even a teen they continue to attempt to derail this Obama’s effective and clean candidacy.
PS: Hillary’s disingenuous apology is a classic tactic. Punch an opponent and then apologize to his supporters. Look at her behavior in the past 7 months. Punch, blame, run, apologize.
