Hispanic voters have turned out in force for Democratic candidates for president in the primary elections this year, an advocacy group notes -- with a warning that the Republican Party's anti-immigraition faction is posing a problem for the party's nominee.
The irony of that statement, of course, is that Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, was among the most fervent supporters of a "comprehensive'' solution to the illegal immigration problem that includes enabling undocumented workers already living in the United States to seek a path to citizenship. And McCain's stance has caused him problems among that conservative faction in his party that opposes any "amnesty.''
"So far this year, 78 percent of Hispanics who have voted in presidential election contests have voted Democratic,'' says Andres Ramires, vice president for Hispanic Programs at the New Democrat Network. And their numbers have accounted for 15 percent of the overall vote in 2008, their studies have found, up from nine percent in 2004.
"These results are just the latest in a long line of evidence indicating that the anti-immigrant stance of the GOP, first adopted in late 2005, has turned the Hispanic community against Republicans and has encouraged them to vote in unprecedented numbers,'' he says.
"These developments pose serious problems for John McCain and his party in 2008,'' he continues.
McCain has found himself speaking more about border security lately, yet he holds to the view that he voices in an interview that will air Sunday night on CBS News' 60 Minutes: "I think some millions… if they complied with some very stringent and rigid requirements, they could find themselves on a path to citizenship.” That includes “getting at the end of the immigration line, paying a fine, learning English and having a job.’’

The Funny Truth about McCain is that the STRAIGHT TALKER has changed his STRAIGHT TALK and is now saying what the GOP Conservatives want to hear about Illegal Immigration, And its FUNNIER that he expects Hispanics / Latinos to vote for the same GOP Republicans who are against them?
I Don't think that the Hispanics are Follies to vote Republicans based on McCain, SAYING in HIS OWN WORDS, "THAT HE WOULD VOTE AGAINST HIS OWN IMMIGRATION BILL".
WE ARE NOT FOLLIES.

Mr. Silva writes about the "Republican Party's anti-immigraition (sic) faction." WRONG!!!! It's anti ILLEGAL immigration. Come on. We trust the Tribune to report accurately. No one is opposed to legal immigrants. All of us have forebears in that category. Many Hispanic legal citizens also dislike the idea of illegal immigrants who compete with them for jobs or take benefits that they have paid for through their tax dollars. Can't the media differentiate between the two?

True to course...he wants to keep the Bush tax cuts for the rich and famous that he voted against. What is it that the rabid right called that?
I actual voted against that before I voted for that.

The GOP believes in legal immigration not illegal immigration.
Not all Hispanics are for Democrats. I know many legal ones who belong to the Republican Party they played by the rules and want illegals to do the same.
This call for instant citizenship is Democrat election year pschobabble.
Al Gore and Bill Clinton allowed 2 million to be citizens overnight in the 2,000 election which W won fair and square not selected but elected.

With an estimated 16 million illegals...that would mean you guys let the rest in. As a matter of fact, the holy spirit of the right, Ronnie Raygun gave amnesty to them.

"sanford" writes,

Sanford, the media IS capable of differentiating between these two very different things. But it CHOOSES not to, because lying about Republicans best serves the interests of the Democratic party, and best salves the bleeding-heart consciences of leftwing reporters.
Don't expect fairness, accuracy, or even good spelling from the media, when politics are involved.

Well who wouldn't expect the vice president for Hispanic issues of the New Democrat network to rail against legitimate immigration control?
The fact is that the latest head to head polls show McCain taking a lot of lower income white independent and Democrat voters from either Obama or Hillary.
A McCain renunciation of his misguided amnesty proposal would only accelerate that trend.

"...78 percent of Hispanics who have voted in presidential election contests have voted Democratic."
- AR
I'm going to guess the other 22 percent were Cuban.
Many of the Hispanics vote in states that aren't in play in November.
FL and TX are going to the Republicans. IL and CA are going to the Democrats.
So if I'm McCain, I keep talking about building a wall - which plays to his base - instead of trying to remind Hispanics that he voted for amnesty.

Republicans just don't get it.... Listen, 'illegal food harvesting and processing' has been going on for DECADES in this country - long before illegal immigration became a heated topic of debate. By that I mean this: we ALL have eaten 'illegal' produce picked by illegal hands. And how about illegal meat (processed by illegals in the slaughter houses). Or how about 'illegal' California wine, made by grapes picked by illegal harvesters? We ALL have been, for decades, CONSUMERS and BENEFICIARIES of illegal labor or processing.
We've all been aware of this for years--Democrat, Republican, or whomever--that it was some 'other brown person' in those fields harvesting our fruits and veggies. That can, and perhaps should, make us ACCOMPLICES or ACCESSORIES to this very crime that we now decry. It would, at the very least, teach us a lesson on how NOT to hypocritically and conveniently make distinctions between 'legal' and 'illegal' immigration WHEN IT SERVES OUR OWN SELF-RIGHTEOUS POSITION!! Therefore, Republicans ARE NOT the judicious conscience (of our society) that they're pretending to be.
Illegal maids (hotels)
Illegal seamstresses (clothes)
Illegal slaughterhouses (meat)
Illegal harvesters (fruits and veggies and wine).
We, as Americans, are illegal through-and-through, because almost every sector of our postmodern society is tainted with CHEAP and, yes, many times illegal, labor. Illegality has permeated our very existence, and we cannot vilify either the illegal laborer or the illegal company that hires them WITHOUT ALSO IMPLICATING OURSELVES IN THE VERY CRIME WE ARE PURPORTING TO SELF-RIGHTEOUSLY 'CLEANSE' FROM OUR EXISTENCE!
