How Barry Obama reclaimed Barack Obama: The Swamp

Last month we had the flap over whether members of the public could use the actual middle name of Barack Hussein Obama openly because the Arabic-sounding, maybe-he-really-is-a-Muslim name his parents gave him can now be used by a malevolent few to impugn the Democratic candidate's patriotism and Americanness in an era of terror over terrorism.

Obama's travails in recent days over his 20-year association with a Chicago Christian church and racial rants of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright there may have pretty well erased the Muslim concern, though creating their own black nationalist worries in the minds of some.

But this morning, as part of the ongoing lengthy discovery process about the vital narratives of our remaining presidential candidates, out comes Newsweek with an intriguing article about the 1980-81 era in Obama's life when he was a California college student at Occidental known as Barry Obama. (With a tip of the hat to the Politico's Mike Allen.)

The magazine cover story describes a gradual personality change in the young man when he actually reversed the assimilation process his Kenyan immigrant father had made upon arriving in 1959 and wanting to fit into the American melting pot. So the father's name of Barack became Barry.

In the early 1980s, with his father long absent and returned to Africa, the would-be politician re-chose Barack, to the consternation of some family members. "It was when I made a conscious decision: I want to grow up," Obama told the magazine.

According to Newsweek's account by Richard Wolffe, Jessica Ramirez and Jeffrey Bartholet, the name change -- or reversal -- became part of the biracial young man's personal discovery that he occupied a potentially unique political position in modern America, as someone who knew intimately both life as a white and an African American.

It's a revealing magazine story and one of the better arguments for what have become 22-month presidential campaigns; they give us more time to learn more about the inner lives of the surviving White House contenders.

I find this article very interesting. It gives great insight into the struggles of black America. As a white man, that kind of stuff does not cross my mind. I'm sure idiots down below will post something like it being an indictor of flip flopping. In reality it is a 20 year old that is growing, and I find it fascinating. Obama 08

eh, nothing to see here. People that age often switch from the diminutive form or a nickname to their full name. I did. So did my wife. So did at least a dozen of my acquaintances. Cindy becomes Cynthia, Joey becomes Joseph or Joe.

This piece just feels like another way to try to make Obama seem different or strange. Good luck with that.

The bottom line remains the same, even though anyone who says Barack Hussein Obama is where he is today is 99 percent because of his skin color. No person born with white skin could be where Barack Hussein Obama is today. No, I am not a racist, just someone trying to get a fact across. I see where Barack Hussein Obama left the country on Easter Sunday so he wouldn't have to go to his special church, NICE. I will not under estimate the stupidity of the average American voter to elect Barack Hussein Obama as President. Didn't the same morons vote in G W Bush twice?

Believe an artical on his working with the poor would have been more valuable, and gave us more insight as to what kind of man he is/was.Who cares what name he went by back in the bygone years of his youth,I don't!!!

It is a very interesting observation. Barak appeals to younger folks because a lot of them are bi-racial or have friends that are. And a lot of the black and white generation are living Dr. King's Dream - where they have been taught that race is irrelevant. Folks born in the 60's and prior are re-introducing them to it though! In an effort to secure a nomination the Clintons are challenging this man's race, religion and nationality. Republicans - who are so removed from reality that I have no words to describe it - are totally off guard with Obama, and are petrified. And instead of helping young Americans to make the connections and finally heal as a unified nation, the oldies are trying to confuse the beatiful young people. They tell young whites - blacks are stealing from you. And they tell young blacks, that America is hopeless. And then there is Barak who has challenged ALL to come to the table and move forward. I dont even think the media has a grasp of this monumental historical time. This election with be earmarked in histor as a time America went forward or backwards.

Oh, come on, Swamp! Should I start signing my comments as Antonio or is that too ethnic? Isn't there something more substantive and worthwhile to talk about on this sunny monday?

Barack's "name change" is useful in one regard -- when someone starts trying to be clever by calling him "Barry Obama" or "Hussien Obama" I immediately know that they have nothing of value to say.

This is news? So he just wanted to go with something a litle more hip while at school. This seems a ridiculous discussion.

Throughout my life, I've called, Steve, Steven, Stevo, Steverino, Stevie, etc. Who cares?

I wouldn't be surprised if he still has some school pals that call him Barry or even just "Barr". Maybe SNL could rekindle that old Rob Schneider character, the "Richmeister".

"Barrack, Barry, Barro, Barackarino....."

I'm pretty sure talking about his first name, middle name, or what his preacher has said in the past won't help Americans get their jobs back, get Iraq to stand up on it's own, fix the American healthcare system, or find a solution to alternative methods of energy. Just come out and admit it that you won't vote for him because he's black, be honest with yourselves and us. You can deny you have a problem with his skin color but if that was the case your only argument against him being President would/should be because you disagree with his policies, not his middle name is Hussein, his grandfather is Muslim, his preacher says some aweful things, etc. The first sign you are a racist is when you can't see your own racism. Let me illustrate soft racism:

Example 1)
"I don't like hip hop/rap, it's too violent and I don't like to see videos with their pants falling below the person's waist. And what is with the way they pronounce words. Excuse me it's ask, not axe. Geesh"

Translation: I will accept hip hop/rap artists if they sing the way I want them to, dress the way I want them to, and talk the way I want them to.

The media spending time on issues as trivial as this is a great honor to the 4000 Americans dead in Iraq. Thanks, mainstream media, for focusing on what's important (like you did in the run-up to the Bush/McCain Iraq war.)

They tell young whites - blacks are stealing from you. And they tell young blacks, that America is hopeless.

Who are the "they" you speak of. It really tires me to listen to the gibberish of people who are too lazy or roo preoccupied with race to think for thmeselves and act for thmeselves. When Bill Clinton instituted his "Welfare to Work" program, was he thinking that it was to keep the black man down, or was it to encourage people of all races to stop depending on handouts and go to work and participate in the American dream. I admire Obama for not allowing his skin color to dictate his aspirations. Now, if only young people of all races would take that example and quit making excuses for their own inability to take what this great nation has to offer and make something of themselves.

Believe me I am not living in void; I have travelled and seen real poverty - no schools, not enough food, yet in those countries without the luxury of electricity or modern conveniences, the people there had one important element in their character - dignity. I don't see that in the poor of this country. Just because a person is poor, doesn't mean they have to be dirty or resort to drugs. Using poverty and race as an excuse is a cop-out.

I praise the late Dr. King for trying to bring to this nation a special meassge, and that is the idea of personal responsibility, and achieving a righteous life, and not blaming the "they" in Keith's comments.

When you have millionaire basketball players acting like street thugs and living a life of sin and corruption, the "low life", no amount of money can make a prince out of a toad. There is an expression I learned in my travels, "wrap a necklace of gold on a dog, and it's still a dog."

Obama changes his name like he changes his issue positions--for votes, not principles.

Phony then, phony now.

I respect your feelings, Obama is a Stand up guy,,but he losing American right and left,
When he made it a point to go on every news media and say he NEVER Heard REV Jeremiha Wright, say those things,,, then a week Later,,,He make his speech and flat out says Yes He was in church when he made those Remarks right there and then ,, Barack Obama is just a politician who just trying to get Elected,,, He Lied to all American,,, A lot of American including including Republican,, if Obama made it about Race,,, the black Community Will lose the Race,,My self, being a Mexican American, I would love to see, A black President Barack Obama is not him anymore,,, He has No integrity,,, and already lied Live on TV,,,Obama want everyone to look Beyond Race,,, Thats where he loses people,,,He telling All American,,, Look beyond Race while he hold a double standard, when it comes to Race,,,All America See's that,, Like I said again and again,,almost 6 month ago When Don Imus said those things about the womens basketball Team,,Barack Obama said he should get fired,, Honestly I felt he should get fired,,,
but Jeremiah Wright we seen what he said about America and what He said about Hilary clinton personally He was way out of line,,, those comment are 1000 time worst than Don Imus,,, Obama refuse to Denounce him out right,,, then he tells every lets get beyond Race,,Barack has a double standard,,, just like Jesse Jackson & Al sharpton,,,
No American should be doing any kind of Remark like that,,, And I agreen but when a black man does it and its happening more and more,, and In Jeremiah Wright, way worst,
there an excusee over excuses,
In other words,,, Barack Obama speech is saying "All White Americans Look Beyond Race"
While all black American live by there Double standard,,
Until Obama comes out clean, The Democratic party will remain split... I am in charge of over 100,000 blog pages that getting the word out against Barack Obama,, I monitor personally over 500,000 Negitive blogs on Hilary,,,geting the fact out,,,,If Barack Obama Really want Change,,,Then he going to Have to Start with him self,,,,

This is a story that all Americans should be proud of, especially those who immigrated here. Many Americans play the name game when they hear a name other than Jack Smith or Bob Harris, names that are certain to mix well in the great mixing pot and convey a sense of ownership or belonging. Names like Shamika Jackson or Tyrone Washington appearing on a list is going to send up red flags. There is a movie where a NAZI officer is trying to determine who was Jewish by reading their names from a list. Anyone named Taubman or Kirshner were singled out. It is no wonder that numerous Jews who migrated to America may have changed their names to something that conveyed a sense of ownership or belonging to the melting pot. This may have been true of many Italians and members of other nationalities. The point is that the concept of the great American melting pot was a testimony of the greatness of America in allowing all ethnicities to belong to this country and enjoy the blessings of liberty. Obama's father wanted to belong, but recognized the name was a give away long before anyone saw him coming

Fast forward to 2008 and we still find this name a problem for the narrow minded among us. Thanks to Obama for taking a stand at an early age.

This happens all of the time.

My kindergarten and first grade teachers told me my name was spelled, "George." That's how I wrote it until I was in 8th grade, when I realized my name is spelled "Jorge," which I pronounce "George" and gives every fits.

My mom has told me in recent years my deceased father suggested I be named after George Washington, since I was born around his birthday. So assimilation is a part of the American way.

As a blogger mentioned above, you cant even spell Hillary without the word LIAR. And the nation will NEVER forget William "Johnson" Clinton, the only president to be IMPEACHED!!! There strategy is to alientate the Obama campaign from WHITE AMERICA where the true votes are - leaving the Democratic Party with ONE choice, choose the Clintons or lose it all. And it was a shrewd, cold Republican tactic designed to play on white people's FEARS and PREJUDICES. And you have to tip your hat, but I for one am PRAYING that Americans do not fall for that. White America, PLEASE do not fall for that trick! Don't judge Dr. Wright by the worst moment in his entire existence, but by the sum of his experiences, and the content of his character!

Obama lost his chance to transcend race and ended giving Dr. Wright a pass on exploiting racial division for personal gain.

What has come home to roost is that dividing constituents by ethnicity pecks away at the idea of being an American. Obama’s support of licenses for illegal aliens makes it clear that he is just another black politician making government dependency cool. His entire candidacy is a mediacrat fabrication born of an intense desire to experience something important from a Democrat. They have ultimately insulted Mr. Obama giving him a pass on associations with indicted hucksters, crackpot preachers, and a record of partisanship that does nothing to demonstrate his ability to unite. His campaign used our sense of fairness against us and sold Geraldine Ferraro a one-way ticket on the Duke University express. Deflecting hard questions by labeling you a racist and pretending he is the answer to some significant purpose hid the fact that the only hope he promised was for more government handouts.

This culture of grievance is convinced that Obama's stick it to the man approach of punishing businesses is going to fix recession. This makes even Hillary look moderate!

Ah, "what's in a name, a rose by another name would smell just as sweet". Go Obama. Give em what for!!!

Even on his name Barry flip flopped.
