Ken Starr II: Clinton camp accuses Obama camp: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Rick Pearson

In the tussle between the Democratic candidates for president, Howard Wolfson, chief spokesman for Hillary Clinton's campaign, today compared the Obama campaign's strategy to that of Ken Starr - the Whitewater special prosecutor during the Bill Clinton White House.

"I, for one, do not believe that imitating Ken Starr is the way to win a Democratic primary election," Wolfson said.

Bill Burton, spokesman for Barack Obama's campaign said this about Obama pressing Clinton for the release of her income tax records: "It is absurd that after weeks of badgering the media to ‘vet’ Sen. Obama, the Clinton campaign believes that they should be held to an entirely different standard.

"We don’t believe that expecting candidates for the presidency to disclose their tax returns somehow constitutes Ken Starr-tactics, but the kind of transparency and accountability that Americans are looking for and that’s been missing in Washington for far too long,'' Burton said. "And if Sen. Clinton doesn’t think that the Republicans will ask these very same questions, then she’s not as ready to go toe-to-toe with John McCain as she claims.''

That's pretty funny coming from someone using Rove's playbook.

"Après lui, le déluge

The kitchen sink runneth over.

The fact that many would fall prey to such a desperate, Rovian grab-bag of distortion and misrepresentation brings home a truth that, now more than ever, must be recognized--a truth about us.

As long as we remain susceptible to negative campaigning--as long as we allow inchoate fear and primitive doubt to overwhelm our capacity to understand and check the facts--we will get the winners we deserve-- namely, those who win ugly.

Democracy takes more than participation--a goal we have yet to achieve--it also takes a willingness to apply thought over fear.

We have been trained to respond to fear appeals aimed at the pursuit of electoral success very well over the past 7 years--and at this point, we should begin to become inured to them. In plain speaking: we should wise up.

The Clinton camp has discovered a formula that, at least in the days of its brief burst of novelty, has worked. We can expect a deluge of such tactics in the coming weeks.

However, despite a sink that will likely fill to bursting--paired, of course, with the conciliatory words that are meant to justify and allow further attacks--we now have time to adjust and evaluate.

We can and should do so.

A campaign that wins in adversity by the use of distortion and fear will govern in adversity in the same manner.

Note, as a single example, today's report by the CBC that Canadian Prime Minister Harper's chief of staff, Ian Brodie, was indeed the source the leak of supposed quotes regarding NAFTA--and that Clinton's team had also allegedly told Harper to "take her NAFTA concerns with a grain of salt.

This is the true "red phone" lesson, one that we should remember over the coming weeks. Overcome vague appeals to fear and unproven distortion. In the slowly receding shadow of these past two terms, pursue reality. In the face of appeals to induced doubt, unproven "experience", and dark insinuation, tenaciously learn--and vote--the facts."

I do believe the pot has now called the kettle black, and I don't mean that in a racist sense. :)

Only the Clintons would claim to be under a personal attack for being asked to release their tax records, just as the other candidates have done.

The Canadian press is reporting that it was actually the Clinton campaign that sent word to the Canadian government not to take the anti-NAFTA talk to seriously.

Somehow, by the time the story made it to print, Canada’s conservative Prime Minister’s office had “leaked” a memo that said it was Obama’s campaign that was saying not to worry about NAFTA. The Clinton part of the story was ignored.

This begs two questions: what is Canada doing meddling in our election and why was the Clinton campaign’s involvement in this dropped from the story?

From the Globe and Mail:

“The news agency quoted that source as saying that Mr. Brodie said that someone from Ms. Clinton'scampaign called and was "telling the embassy to take it with a grain of salt."
The story was followed by CTV's Washington bureau chief, Tom Clark, who reported that the Obama campaign, not the Clinton's, had reassured Canadian diplomats.”

Didnt Hillary say that her returns would be released on April 15. SO what is the problem. So now that she has given a date will Obama give us a date where he will come clean about ttrading favors with Rezko? Bringing up HIllarys dirt doesnt change the fact that he still has to answer a lot of questions on what and why Rezko and Obama traded favors.

Im pretty sure that tax returns are due by 4/15 ?
Which a lot of people go by
Why has Obama not yet produced the records on his dealings with rezko??
There is no deadline for
those yet he dodges that
Why has he not produced his records of campaign donations dating back to 2000
Why has he not produced any records of any sort??
His senate records arent tough to understand NOTHING
Where is this contract for the home BO&MO bought??
Lets see it
Strange that 2 supposedly intelligent lawyers didnt know what kind of deal they were making isnt it?
UGH just a boneheaded mistake?

Let the American PEOPLE see your TAX RETURNS Clinton ! What are you afraid of ?

This is entirely Ken Starr like tactics. The Obamites don't care how they win. "If I can't have a seat at the table, then let's kick the legs off the *****."
Problem is, they have a really big seat at the table already. Shame. Where's Obama's earmarks? How much did REzko bundle? how many fundraisers?

That's incredible... I've heard a lot of things come out of these campaigns, but suggesting Ken Starr tactics is beyond the pale. I'm starting to get the impression that the Clintons would do literally anything to get elected. Depressing, really.

BTW, I notice another comment left here mentions what is a huge story in Canada regarding Hillary and NAFTA. Why is the American media ignoring this? Are you afraid Hillary might say something mean about you?

Give up the TAX RETURNS!

WHY won't SHE??

WHAT is she hiding??

The problem is the tax returns are from last year.

This is really something, coming from a campaign that has been relentlessly attacking Obama since, well, the IA Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, which was well over 100 days ago. Once again, the Clinton campaign shows it's complete and utter hypocrisy. It looks as if they can dish it, but they can't take it.

The media is yet to explain to America why they are demonising Obama for being neighbours to REZKO but yet they wont report the fact that the Clintons have a Fraud case to answer which is already in court.

You all know darn well that if she really wanted the info to be made public, she could have it done with the snap of her fingers. It is not that hard to release such information. As a matter a fact, I believe a little bit of Xeroxing would take place, in order to get it done.

Knowing this, the question is: what is she hiding?

They are doing everything possible to steal the nomination from Obama. However, Bill and Hillary Clinton will not disclose the source of their millions of dollars donated to of their library foundation. They will not disclose their tax return either. In the mean time Hillary is funding part of her own campaign from her ‘own’ money.

Voters have a legitimate right to find who gave her those millions of dollars. How did Bill Clinton accumulate so much wealth after leaving the presidency?

Poor Wolfson has a permanent wedgie left over from his days as a high school locker room towel boy.
What a perfect mouth piece for the She-weasel!

Haha. Ken Starr? They have a lot of nerve comparing Barack Obama to Ken Starr. The man has barely even lodged an attack at the Clinton camp.

I am so tired of people who bring up Rezko and have clearly never actually READ an article on the subject. If you had, you would know there ISN'T anything to disclose. This case was shut years ago. We in Chicago--Obama supporters and bashers alike--MOCK people who think Rezko's trial has anything to do with Obama. This is old news from years ago. It's a shame that Chicago reporters ancy for the limelight have resurrected this nonsense case. Here, learn something:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/117851/page/2

BTW, speaking of property deals ... people who deal in Whitewater shouldn't throw stones.

"BLACKWATER SPEAKS"

IT'S R E N Z I not REZKO!

Obama couldn't be a part of Blackwater. Obama is a black man and we don't let black men in "BLACKWATER"

UNCLE KEN WOULD ROLL OVER IN HIS GUNKER SACK if he knew of such a "Man" attempting to join his GANG!

Obama is no Ken Star, he has no "militia" funded by George Bush's Government in the tune of 3 billion dollars.

Obama is no Ken Star, HE IS EITHER THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OR VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

HIS ARMY, NAVY, MARINES, AIR FORCE WILL BE AS ALWAYS, AMERICANS, NOT "BLACKWATER"

WHY WON'T HILLARY PICK UP THE PHONE?

It just rings and rings...
Where is she when we need her?

And why is it so difficult to copy (re-do) your tax records for the past ten years and make them available to the American public? Let the voters judge if it is appropriate and stop equating it with Ken Starr. The voters are demanding transparency from our elected officials.

Obama has asked a question that a lot of us would like answered.

ANSWER THE PHONE, HILLARY!

Obama is more like Bush less like Starr

Ex substance abuser.
Total lack of experience.
Likes to speak like some kind of preacher.
Knows all the keywords and touchy feeling phrases.
Willing to make those life a death mistakes.
Total ego driven.

Puhleez. After all of the shrill whining Clinton and her Camp did over the last few months, especially her Obama should be ashamed theatrics. If you can't take it, don't dish it. And what about that tax return? Show us the money. By the way, Ken Starr never did get Lucy to 'splain about those missing files.

When Obama is President, maybe he will pardon Hillary from any potential tax fraud liability.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama:

Dear Madam, and Sir,

A Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama ticket is what we want. And that is what we need to take back the Whitehouse. We want a smart, tough, idealistic, seasoned veteran of many battles fighting for the American people (Hillary Clinton). With a young, passionate, smart, open-minded, hard-working idealist fighting for the American people (Barrack Obama). The DREAM TEAM!

You are both fabulous candidates. And we, the American people are very fortunate to have each of you. Taking back the Whitehouse is critical for the American people, and the world at this time. And I think the American people have been saying loudly, and clearly that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket is the best way to do this.

I think the American people have made it very clear that they feel Hillary Clinton is the one best able to lead the ticket against John McCain at this critical, and desperate time in America, and around the world. These dramatic comebacks are testament to Hillary Clinton's skill, and experience as a fighter for the American people. They are also a testament to the strong desire of the American people to have both of you fighting for the American people at this time of midnight in America.

Typical of the Clinton's is an uncanny ability to see and understand what the American people want. And then to try and get it for them. Even if they have to go through three political near death experiences to try and get it for the American people. This is classic Clinton's. They are the best I have ever seen.

We are desperate out here. Millions of us are suffering greatly. And tens of thousands of us are dying needlessly every year. Men, women, children, and babies. We need help! As Hillary Clinton said "It's not a game". We need the two of you together on our side fighting for us, and for the American dream for all. Not fighting against each other anymore.

It's time for you Senator Obama to join forces with Hillary Clinton as her running mate so that we can all focus our energies, and resources on taking back America for the American people.

Sincerely

Jacksmith...

Bradley Goes There
06 Mar 2008 04:26 pm

Bill Bradley, like all good basketball fans, is behind Barack Obama and he's bringing up the Presidential Library that dare not speak its name:

I think Barack Obama has a much stronger chance of beating John McCain in the general election. I think Hillary is flawed in many ways, and particularly if you look at her husband's unwillingness to release the names of the people who contributed to his presidential library. And the reason that is important -- you know, are there favors attached to $500,000 or $1 million contributions? And what do I mean by favors? I mean, pardons that are granted; investigations that are squelched; contracts that are awarded; regulations that are delayed.

As I wrote in my Los Angeles Times op-ed on the subject, Hillary Clinton has, to her credit, recognized that George W. Bush's undisclosed library fundraising is a problem and sponsored a bill to ensure that the next President of the United States can't do what Bush and her husband are doing. And Bill says that if Hillary wins, then he'll disclose. But that's too late -- the election is happening now, and people deserve to know now. We do know that "Denise Rich. Ms. Rich gave the foundation $450,000 while her fugitive ex-husband, Marc Rich, was seeking a pardon on tax-evasion and racketeering charges" and that other donors as of 2004 include various Wal-Mart-linked individuals and foundations, Haim Saban, Qatar, Kuwait, the Saudi Royal family, etc.

What good will digging in the Cintons taxes do for the country? The obamanites are sounding desperate. Why not concentrate on what he will do as president other tnan make pretty speeches. Real men don't whine, but kick behinds. Nafta has played out. What else does he have in his bag? Many places in the U.S. benefit from Nafta. These companies would have found a way to leave regardless. It's called making a profit. We have companies that have a prosperous export business. You can't dictate where a company does business.

Hillary with her hawkishness and dissing Obama for McCain is so Lieberman. It is time to close out her campaign.
Her campaign is disgusting and she is a disgrace to the Democratic Party.

obama lost the popular vote.
He should get over it where he can get the experiences he doesnt have.

He so Bush.
