Sen. John McCain, acknowledging that he has been “from time to time’’ at odds with his own party, says: “We have to I think re-energize the party, we have to expand the base, we have to appeal to the independents and we got to go out and get those Reagan Democrats and there’s a whole new generation of them, we got our work cut out for us.’’

The presumptive Republican nominee for president was asked in an interview airing on CBS News’ 60 Minutes this evening how he hopes to make a case for a third Republican term in the midst of a continuing war in Iraq, with Osama bin Laden still at large and the economy slipping into recession.

“I can make a case that a less government, lower taxes, less regulation, safer America is what I can give America,’’ he said. “But I don't-- underestimate the size of the challenge.’’

McCain was reminded that he was telling Americans that the United States must stay the course in Iraq at a time when a lot of Americans didn’t want to hear that.

“It's not what they wanted to hear. I can read the polls very well,’’ McCain agreed. “I said at the time, I'd much rather lose a campaign than lose a war. Now, more and more Americans are believing that the surge is succeeding. I'm very glad of that.

In his "town hall''-styled meetings with voters on the campaign trail, McCain likes to speak of following bin Laden “to the gates of Hell’’ to find him. He was asked in this interview what he actually will do.

“Well, the first thing is not tell Osama Bin Laden what I'm going to do,’’ he told CBS’ Scott Pelley. “But I'll get him. ''

What does he offer for the American people who have watched as gasoline prices go from $3 to $3.25 and are bound for $4 a gallon?

“I would love to tell you that I have an immediate answer for that. And I don’t,’’ McCain said. “The only way we are going to fix it is to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. We've got to have a crash program, a all out effort. But, I can't give you straight talk and tell you that (SNAP) tomorrow I can change the-- the price of a gallon of gas.’’

McCain was asked about his own demeanor, and his reputation for a “short fuse.’’

“I think I get angry when I see things go wrong,’’ the senator from Arizona said. “I've never been elected Ms. Congeniality. But I do believe that I can unite this party. And I think the American people support somebody who still has the capacity, maybe, to get angry from time to time when we see something wrong.’’

42% of Americans want McCain to answer the 3AM call. Only 25% say Hillary or Obama:

You would have thought that this crazy old war mongering nut (McCain) would have learned something from being a POW, I guess not:

That's the type of person I want having control of a huge arsenal? Nice!

I don't understand all the hub bub about McCain's temper. You media knuckleheads act like the folks running for office aren't human and don't have emotions. Get a grip.

McCain is a terrible candidate for our party, we should have picked Romney.

Just wait until this fall when the media gets it out there that it was actually McCain who approached John Kerryin 2004 about being his running-mate and not the other way around.

Also, we're trying to make a big deal about Obama's relationship with Rezko which isn't going anywhere because there's nothing new there but with McCain we're going to hear about how deeply involved he really was in the Keating scandel and we're also going to hear alot about McCain's cozy relationship with the recently indicted Rick Renzi.

I always knew it would be a mistake to nominate McCain.
Romney 2012!

Who do YOU want to answer the 3am call?

1. A wife who was in the White House for 8 years, as first lady--but then so was the White House pastry chef.

2. A young guy who talks real pretty, but has about 36 months of freshman experience, and has made foreign policy comments (I'll meet Castro)that have made all the other candidates cringe, they're so naive.

3. A seasoned 25+ year senator who has chaired numerous intelligence committees, reviewed and drafted numerous military spending bills, appropriated on more bills than he has fingers, held a top secret clearance, who in wartime was shot down and spent 36 months being tortured before he was released as a true american hero.

If the ANSWER isn't clear, how about we add that the war hero is a moderate, where the wife and the freshman are unabashed far left liberals.

Cloice seems clear now, doesn't it?

Have a nice day.

Who's John McCain again? I forget. Is he that old, grumpy man who is so mad he got shot down over Vietnam that he wants to avenge his personal failure by staying in Iraq until the cows come home?

why do Republicans keep fixating on Reagan (or even Reagan Democrats). it has been 20 years since he was Prez, and at least 3 years of voting age groups were born who do not know who Reagan was or care. If the Rep. want to grow they have to have someone now lead them, not keep referring to the past, or else that will lead to stagnation.

right on Karl!

To the first comment...

It's 25% Hillary AND 25% Obama...

In other words, 50% of Americans do not prefer McCain to answer the phone compared to 42% who do.

The 25%/25% split pretty much reflects the dem party right now, but make no mistake, the dems will come together against McCain.

Who is going to wake McCain when he gets the 3a.m. call?
G-- Dam-it let me sleep!

NO ONE IS GOING TO CALL ANYONE AT 3AM! This gimmick scare tactic is over, it will not trick an entire nation again into electing another old, crusty white guy.

-If it did ring, I would love for someone to answer who would not rush to war out of anger, vengeance and ego.

"You would have thought that this crazy old war mongering nut (McCain) would have learned something from being a POW, I guess not") He the one who knows war the best and hates it the most. But, hey I bet you have done nothing for the U.S.A but, suck on the tit of the tax payers.

Sherry, that should tell you pretty much everything you need to know. More americans think McCain should take the call than any other candidate. Period.

Don't kid yourself, the angry catfight going on in the democrat party will turn tons of Hillary or Obama people into McCain voters.

“It's not what they wanted to hear. I can read the polls very well,’’ McCain agreed. “I said at the time, I'd much rather lose a campaign than lose a war. Now, more and more Americans are believing that the surge is succeeding. I'm very glad of that.

What I don't here McCain talking about is a political solution. That's what the military wants and that is what it will take to bring stability. I would be interested to here what he and the other candidates have to say about it. Not just bluster but some real straight talk. I would have allot more faith in John is he wouldn't have pulled that Bagdad shopping spree stunt. I mean why do these guys do things that make them sound so insane. I mean the average person can't go shopping with half the military escorting them around.

QUESTION: I have just read on the Internet that you said there are areas in Baghdad that you can walk around freely.
MCCAIN: Yes, I just was — came from one.
QUESTION: Pardon me?
MCCAIN: I just came from one.
QUESTION: Yes. And which areas would that be?
MCCAIN: Sir, what I said was — what I said was that there is encouraging signs and that things are better.
– lying to an Iraqi reporter at the Green Zone press conference in Baghdad

“The American people are not getting the full picture of what’s happening here. They’re not getting the full picture of the drop in murders, the establishment of security outposts throughout the city, the situation in Anbar Province, the deployment of additional Iraqi brigades, who are performing well, and other progress — signs of progress that are having been made.”
– at the press conference in Baghdad

“General Petraeus goes out there almost every day in an unarmed humvee. I think you oughta catch up. You are giving the old line of three months ago. I understand it. We certainly don’t get it through the filter of some of the media.”
– to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, who asked McCain why Americans still aren’t able to safely leave the Green Zone in Iraq

CNN’s Michael Ware rebutted those remarks straight away: I’ve spoken to military sources and there was laughter down the line. I mean, certainly the general travels in a humvee. There’s multiple humvees around it, heavily armed. There’s attack helicopters, predator drones, sniper teams, all sorts of layers of protection. So, no, Sen. McCain is way off base on this one..”

“Well, I’m not saying they could go without protection. The President goes around America with protection. So, certainly I didn’t say that.”
– McCain on CNN the very next day just flat out lying (maybe this is the misspeak he’s talking about), when told about Petraeus’s actual security detail

http://pandagon.blogsome.com/2007/04/07/mccain-i-misspoke-about-conditions-in-baghdad/

I realize there has been progress since this whole debacle took place, but the absurdity of the whole shopping spree still calls into question some very fundamental issues about Mr McCain. I want to trust this guy but...

Who do I want answering...
Someone who votes against Bush tax cuts, then votes for....someone who calls the religious right agents of intolerance, then calls them great friends to get votes...someone who wants to send 44K jobs overseas to build planes with our tax dollars...someone who was involved in the Keating 5, whos own cheerleader in chief(Jeff) says yes he was involved in the "scheme" but it was only minimal....someone who voted for torture...someone who started seeing his current wife while he was still married to another who was disabled in an accident...someone JUST LIKE BUSH.....Well, I can tell you who I don't want.

And, with his temper, he will blow up the world with nukes about 2 minutes after the call.

The president of the U.S. can't wear his emotions on his sleeves. He has to act with intelligence in a calm, rational manner. McCain has a difficult time doing that.

So would Hillary, I think.

GO OBAMA

Anybody who says "I will follow him or them to the gates of hell" is one mad man, or a madman. Now who would want to follow someone to the gates of hell? That's sick, but it is representative of the mind of John McCain. Maybe if he becomes president and has followed a few of his enemies to hell he can tell us what it is like.

Why is John McCain being given such a past by the media on his health issues ? He has had repeated recurrances of very dangerous melanoma and no one mentions it.

I want someone who will fight for me and go to the gates of hell if need be! Not some pansy waste liberal who would rather talk than do what is necessary. I can't see Obama or Clinton doing what is necessary to protect this country. If we do not fight and stop those radicals from the middle east over there then we will be doing it here in our backyards. To get through what he did in Nam is a testiment to his fortitude. Easy to forget what happened 30 years ago. Those of us who lived through it will not forget. I hope McCain gets both of their a_ _ es in the election.

Yep, just like when we didn't stop the Communists in Vietnam and we ended up fighting them in our own back ....Oh, wait. Sorry. Never mind.

"McCain...capacity to fantasize about bombing from time to time."

Why does John McCain think killing is such a great thing? Why does he enjoy the thought of dropping bombs on foreign nations?

CUBA

"McCain acknowledged that the mood on board was tense, given what the president had had to say and they had planes loaded with weapons to deliver and targets picked out in Cuba.

"But I also have to tell you when you're that age there's a certain spirit of excitement and adventure and that's what you're trained to do," he said. "There was also some enthusiasm for carrying out our mission."

IRAN

Is this really the man you want making decisions about war? A man who can barely contain his glee at the thought of death from the air?

Quills:

Maybe you should just stay in the trailer wrapped up in a warm blanket, sucking your thumb. You'll be safe there.

In other good news today, Bush is sending Cheney to the Middle East.

Hope he doesn't go hunting while he is there - the Israelis may mistake him for a Palestinian and start shooting!!!!

This is what John McCain wants 100 more years of:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-iraq-us-deaths-story,0,3122119.story

"Five American soldiers on a foot patrol were killed Monday in a bomb attack in central Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

Four of the soldiers died at the scene and the fifth died later from wounds, the military said in a statement. The blast also wounded three U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter, the military said."

A vote for John McCain is a vote for more dead GI's.

Ah..but these numbers are acceptable to the war supporters. Only 5...go tell that to the families of these 5 that it is acceptable.

Bill:

Where are Johnny the mime and Brucie today??

They must be out celebrating 5 more dead soldiers in the war in Iraq.

After all, the mime says all the deaths are worth it.

That's okay, anger can be a good thing, when used at the right time. Unlike our President who has let the Dems get away with murder, metaphoricallay. That why the Dems would not give an up or down vote on Bush's judges, and let not forget John Bolton who was the most qualified Un ambassador ever to be nominated for the post.

If the phone in the White House rings at 3 AM and McSame answers it, then at least we know he's not out cheating on wife #2, just like he did for years on wife #1.

Adultery: perfectly acceptable to the party of "family values".
