Obama adviser: No one ready for 3 am phone call: The Swamp

The Clinton campaign has very generously sent reporters covering the presidential race a YouTube video of Susan Rice, a foreign policy adviser to Sen. Barack Obama, saying on MSNBC yesterday that neither Sens. Hillary Clinton nor Obama were ready to answer the 3 a.m. crisis phone call in the White House.

The Clinton campaign saw it as a gotcha moment, since Rice told host Tucker Carlson and the world beyond the studio that Obama wasn't ready to take the "phone call" made famous in Sen. Clinton's campaign ad.

They've worked it into their message today. Here's part of memo from a campaign spokesman:

Senator Obama lost Ohio and Texas because voters had doubts about his ability to serve as Commander in Chief and steward of the economy. But instead of addressing those concerns, how is Senator Obama responding? By attacking Senator Clinton.

With one of his top foreign policy advisers acknowledging yesterday that he is not ready to take the 3am call and one of his principal supporters in Texas unable to name a single legislative accomplishment, Senator Obama’s time would be better spent making the case for why he can do the most important job in the world just three years out of the state senate.

Of course, the Clinton campaign glossed over that Rice also said that Clinton wasn't ready to answer the same phone call. Rice, by the way, was Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs during the Clinton Administration.

And she went on to say that Sen. John McCain wasn't either. You don't see that in the clip the Clinton campaign is sending around because they edited it to their advantage.

But if you watch the entire segment, you hear her make the same point about McCain and, later, you hear Carlson commend her for her candor.

And Rice, who is about as straight-talking a former diplomat as you'll ever find, was definitely candid. As Tucker noted, rarely will you find a surrogate for a presidential aspirant who will ever openly admit to her or his candidate being unready for some important part of the job. That takes guts.

Of course she made sure to say no one, including McCain, was ready, which was her way of trying to make sure that she didn't deliver an advantage to either of Obama's rivals.

I saw that show and she was basically saying that until you've been put on the spot you'll never know how you'll react. Fair enough. To me that make a good case for Mr Obama who seems much more capable than someone like Hillary, who has mood swings that make Sybil look stable by comparison.

Crazy Old Man McCain would pick up the red phone and start pressing the nuke buttons even before he found out that he had just been Punk'd by Howard Stern:

Hillary is a traitor to her own Party.

She has lost the support of many who, if Barack were not the nominee, would have voted for her. She is a disgrace to the Democratic Party.

She has become what the Democratic Party has sought to defeat.

We do not need another liar in the White House.

Liar? try Goolsbee--NAFTA just fine with us cuz we have Treehouse foods money (well the interest and other goodies it brought) from Walmart and that great Daley chair at the U of C med facility for Michelle. Yup. And we know how to bundle (read HIDE) lobbyist money too! Wahoo!

Well, the Canadian press is reporting that it was actually the Clinton campaign that sent word to the Canadian government not to take the anti-NAFTA talk to seriously.

Somehow, by the time the story made it to print, Canada’s conservative Prime Minister’s office had “leaked” a memo that said it was Obama’s campaign that was saying not to worry about NAFTA. The Clinton part of the story was ignored.

This begs two questions: what is Canada doing meddling in our election and why was the Clinton campaign’s involvement in this dropped from the story?

From the Globe and Mail:

“The news agency quoted that source as saying that Mr. Brodie said that someone from Ms. Clinton'scampaign called and was "telling the embassy to take it with a grain of salt."
The story was followed by CTV's Washington bureau chief, Tom Clark, who reported that the Obama campaign, not the Clinton's, had reassured Canadian diplomats.”

I see the SNL skit has not had any effect on Frank James being biased towards Obama. Obviuosly she is admitting that Obama is net ready to take that kind of call but I doubt voters feel the same way about McCain. You know the guy who just happened to be a war hero, who served years in the military and was imprisioned in Vietnam for 6 years. I also would bet that Hillary feels she would be ready to take that call. So obviously the McCain and HIllary campign do not share her opinion. So basically she just admitted that Obama would have no idea how to respond to that kind of a phone call. Come on Frank you do not always have to take up for the Obama campaign. She basically proved exactly what the Clinton said.

Stupid move by a stupid campaign advisor. I'd LOVE for her or Obama to claim that McCain isn't ready to take that call in a debate. McCain's record of military and legislative leadership puts him way ahead of the democrat lightweights in the readiness department.

You want him on that wall.

Just another example of the Clinton campaign distorting the truth for political gain. When you can't win on your own merits the only choice is to try and make your opponent appear inferior to you. Never mind that it isn't true. Say anything, do anything to win....I fervently hope the American people have seen these dirty tricks often enough not ot fall for them. Barack Obama offers a real alternative to politics as usual.

I have to say that it was pretty silly to say this. However, there is a lot of truth in it. I don't believe experience is a great test. If it were, I wish when the 3am call came into Bush...nobody had been home.

He said Iraq would be EASY! There would be no house to house missions!! He agreed with Rumsfeld's strategy until long after it became apparent the "light footprint" was a failure!! What are you smoking you apologist liar?

Vinny/Jeff:

Look at McCain's decision making process when it comes to Iraq.

Besides, they would probably not wake him - old men need their sleep each night.

All things considered, I think a President Obama with a Vice President Webb would make better decisions than McCain any day.

Unless you are placed in a situation of federal emergency , will you know what to do. 9/11 terrorist attack , I believe was an emergency Hillary help the fire fighters and the police to get the care desperately need after. What kind of exposure has Obama ever have?. His only fame to claim , while in the Illinois house, he voiced against a war, he helped pay for in the US Senate.

Let's face it The Messiah has no international experience at all unless you call his dealings with his Iraqi friends Rezko and Aiham Alsammarae in Chicago.Funny what comes out when you face going to jail isn't it.

Bob, McCain is in bed by 8PM (because he's so old!) and up and ready to get the early bird special at 3AM, so the call won't be any problem.

I agree entirely with his decision-making process on Iraq, but that probably shows more of the difference between you and me than any of the candidates. By questioning his decision-making you're questioning Hillary's, too.

After being president for two years, a reporter asked John F. Kennedy what experience best prepares one to be president. He answered, “There is no experience you can get that can possibly prepare you adequately for the Presidency.”

Ms. Rice goes on to say, that John McCain isn’t ready either, and then explains why all three are unprepared. None of the three (or any other possible candidate for that matter) have had the absolute responsibility only a president has—the responsibility to make an awesome decision that can determine the very survival of the nation. Being a senator doesn’t give you the experience; you are only one out of a hundred senators no matter how many committees you sat on. Being the wife of a president doesn’t give it; it was your husband who had to make the decision. Being in the military, no matter how much of a war hero you were, doesn’t give it; you were only following someone else’s orders. And being a governor doesn’t give the experience because you were not responsible for international relationships.

So if experience doesn’t count that much, how do we pick a president? We focus on character. Are the candidates honest, intelligent, and forthright? Can they communicate to us clearly? Can they inspire us? Can they learn from their mistakes? Do they value the welfare of the people above their own? We then roll the dice and hope we have picked the right person. Ms. Rice’s comment was not a blunder or a gaffe; it was one of the most honest and accurate comments of the campaign.

Hey... Obama supporters (who are Clinton haters)... Cannot you admit that the Obama campaign spokesperson made a big mistake? Why blame Clinton or even McCain?

REALITY CHECK: Obama is not perfect... and turning him into godlike status will only make it further for him to fall when he (or his campaign) does trip up.... and he will again.

I agree entirely with his decision-making process on Iraq,

Really? You do? His decision making process was muddled at best. At first he supported Rumsfeld's "light footprinte" before he was against it.

While it's true that no experience prepares you completely for the presidency, I'd say serving your country in the military, chairing the Armed Services and Commerce Committees in the Senate, and writing landmark campaign-finance legislation leave you much more prepared than speaking in a preacher voice and giving a lot of speeches. Never breaking your code of honor during five years in a Vietnamese prison camp has to count for something, too.

Hillary is such a dishonest person and a snake.

ummm, exactly what did Hillary do during 9/11? She helped the responders get health coverage? Awesome. So, at 3am, when the next terrorist attack happens, she won't say, "secure our borders, lock down the airports, hunt down the terrorists", but instead say, "isn't everyone covered by my health plan? So, what's the big deal?, they can go to a doctor".

Let's take a look at just how badly we've screwed ourselves over this election: a leading candidate's senior advisor says none of the remaining candidates, including hers, are ready to answer a 3 am phone call. With the way the world is now, can we afford to have a President with no knowledge of how to deal with a crisis?

Wouldn't it be nice if Rudy Giuliani was still in the race?
