by John McCormick, updated
WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Responding to comments made by Hillary Clinton earlier today in the same town, Barack Obama had his shots ready when he arrived at a high school gymnasium for a Sunday afternoon event.
"Sen. Clinton continues to insist that we provide speeches and she provides solutions," he said. "The press has sort of bought into this, I think, because they, you know, want to keep the contest interesting, and I understand that."
But Obama said he has provided specifics on "every issue under the sun" and that her claims of foreign-policy experience are overblown.
"She has, supposedly, all this vast foreign policy experience," he said. "I have to say, when it came to making the most important foreign policy decision of our generation -- the decision to invade Iraq -- Sen. Clinton got it wrong. She didn't read the nation intelligence estimates…I have enough experience to know that if you have a national intelligence estimate, and the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee says you should read this -- this is why I'm voting against the war -- then you should probably read it."
That statement prompted this response from Clinton's campaign: "Sen. Obama attacked Hillary on Iraq by invoking Sen. Rockefeller and incorrectly saying that the West Virginia senator opposed the 2002 Iraq vote. The truth is that Sen. Rockefeller voted for the war resolution - not against it as Sen. Obama suggested to the people of Ohio."
Obama's campaign later responded that the Illinois Democrat was not referring to Rockefeller, who he campaigned with throughout Sunday.
"Apparently, the Clinton campaign read Sen. Obama’s remarks about as carefully as Sen. Clinton read the National Intelligence Estimate," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "The truth is the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2002 was Bob Graham, and he read the NIE, voted against the war, and counseled other Democrats to read the NIE before they voted."
Obama, meanwhile, called on Clinton to offer more specifics of her own as he spoke to what his campaign said was an audience of more than 3,000 inside and outside the school.
"We're still waiting to hear Sen. Clinton tell us what precise foreign policy experience that she is claiming that makes her prepared to answer that phone call at three in the morning," he said.
Candice Swords, a stay-at-home mother from Westerville, went to both the Clinton and Obama events. She described herself as a "life-long Clinton supporter," who even named her 9-year-old daughter Chelsea, after the former first daughter.
But, she said, she plans to vote for Obama.
"Hillary is tied to lobbyists and when you take money from lobbyists, you owe them," she said. "He's fresh. He's new. He's change."
The schools where the two candidates appeared reflected the demographic aspects of their appeals. Obama was at the relatively new Westerville Central High School, while Clinton was at the older Westerville North High School.
As much as she likes Clinton, Swords said she believes Obama has a better chance fixing the nation's ills. "The experience part of her is nice, but I prefer the change Obama could offer," she said.

Comments
It's still a very typical thing to think of someone like Obama, who just has the confidence and ability to lead well, to be all talk and no action.
Contrast with Clinton's speech for women's rights in China in the 90's. It was just a speech. She didn't follow it up with action. She became the original empty pantsuit.

I don't care about Hillary, she's basically finished anyway.
I think Americans need to start taking a closer look at this dangerous Republican nut who calls himself a "straight-talker":

Hillary is relentless and heartless. Relentless in playing the same old dirty tear-down politics. Heartless in voting for a war that she knew was wrong because she had her eye on the prize. She was not simply showing bad judgment then; she was showing her lust for power. The prize is the Presidency of the most powerful country in the world. Her lust for power has resulted in the deaths of thousands of our brave men and women and of innocent civilians and in the near bankrupt condition of our nation. It may be that she will win against Obama because of her fear mongering and war mongering, and the Clinton dynasty will once again make money for themselves and their wealthy supporters in the WH. But I for one will not vote for the Clintons in November, and many of the younger and newer Democratic voters will be, like me, registering independent for the next decade and more. This will be the Clinton legacy, a relentless and heartless empty victory.

The hubris of this young turk is impossible to over-estimate. How DARE he intimate the the person who may be at the top of our ticket against McCain in the Fall failed to read the national intelligence estimate!
No, Hilary no doubt read things, but did what young Barack would do 4 years later, when he actually (wait for it) was in a position to vote against the war. He did NOT curtail funding. He voted against a bill which would have ordered our soldiers HOME by 2007.
HE VOTED AGAINST STOPPING FUNDING FOR THE WAR IN IRAQ IN 2006. So, what's he talking about? He's trying to appeal to young voters who have only NOW paid attention to newspapers, coverage of politicians, etc.. You know-people who are supposed to answer to reporters (and maybe someday a prosecutor or two) about mansions purchased with the help of a man who ruined 100 million dollars worth of housing for poor Chicago people--and did so with the help of former state senator Barack Obama. Maybe he needs more time at home in the mansion with Michelle to remember that when one finger points--there's 3 pointing backatcha!
Posted by: SickofdaHype | March 2, 2008 4:33 PM
Obama's vaunted better judgment was not based on the national intelligence estimates either. He did not even think he needed the briefing that Hillary had to opine. what kind of judgment is that?

Obama can cut an paste all the eloquence from great leaders of the past but that doesnt make him experienced.
Obama should serve at least one term in the Senate and learn the hard lessons of making difficult choices before bragging about his lack of experience. Borrowed speeches is not experience.
Posted by: hhkeller | March 2, 2008 5:00 PM
Obama says that the press has bought into an argument that Hillary put forward only because they want to keep the contest 'interesting?' Mr. Obama seems fairly certain of the outcome. Such open displays of self confidence always seem provide an interesting twist. Let's see...

Why experience is no guarantee of success when it comes to the Presidency. There is a fascinating article that is the cover story for this week's Time magazine. The article goes on to graphically display the level of experience that all of the previous 42 US presidents had prior to winning the Presidency. The following revered presidents all had less experience before winning the presidency than Obama does right now; Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Herber Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan.
Plus this whole experience debate between Hillary and Obama is very disingenuous on the part of the Hillary campaign. Obama actually has 3 more years of legislative experience than does Hillary.
The bottom line is both Hillary and Obama are just as ready and qualified as some of the best presidents in the past that we have ever had. What really matters is which one can beat Mccain in November. After all that is the prize we all want. There is no glory or purpose for being the Democratic nominee if you can’t beat the Republican challenger. Obama is attracting twice the number of voters in RED states to vote for him than the Republicans are getting to come out for their own Republican primaries. Obama has the support of 62% of the independents and Hillary has only 30%. Obama has about 75% of the support of the African Americans and Hillary is in the 20's. Even White women voters are now almost neck and neck in support for Obama and Hillary. I haven't personally met any Republicans who said they could cross-over and vote for Hillary. That is a big problem for us in November. Point blank, like it or not Obama is the only one who can win against Mccain.

sickofdahype: it's a fact that hillary didn't read the NIE. bob graham, chair of the sentate intelligence committee, urged hillary to read it but she didn't. (edwards didn't either, btw, but he much earlier voiced regret over his vote.) it was a 96-page document, and graham voted against the war because it had authoritative doubts that hussein had WMD.
senators had to sign in to read it since it was classified. hillary didn't sign in - didn't read it.
just a fact.

HRC's campaign was built on hype about inevitability. When that proved false, her desperation became evident and she began to do and say anything to get elected. It is a shame that she squandered all her potential. Do you want her to have the position of power to squander our national potential? She's already given us a clue as to what she will do - make poll-based decisions despite evidence telling her to do the opposite. If she had bothered to read the report, she would have qualified herself to be "ready on day one." Instead, she's qualified herself to run again as Senator from New York . . . probably with a Democratic primary opponent next time. Her "experience" is a mile wide and an inch deep. We need substance and she has nothing to offer.
Posted by: Ronald | March 2, 2008 5:40 PM
Yes Kravits, she's an empty suit because she spent most of her life highlighting women's issues. She's such an empty suit that in 94 she was Awarded the Living Legacy Award by Women's International. She's such an empty suit that in 05 she was inducted to the National Women's hall of Fame. They picked her because she was such an empty suit.
Anyway,
"Sen. Clinton continues to insist that we provide speeches and she provides solutions,"
She did offer solutions. In the interest of our national security Hillary, like many others, preferred to be safe than sorry. Her solution was going through the UN and allowing the inspection process to take place. Instead Bush Jr saw the opportunity that the approval presented for his own agenda, how he interpreted national security in the broader scheme of things, and decided to look for reasons to discredit the UN. I'm sure that was in the papers. I've never seen the type of interpretation of ideas and our role in the world since --forever. It is a drastic change and I don't think anyone could have seen how far Bush Jr would take it. That the US would be playing such a large role. Given the 90's the US had a tendency not to get into things as deep and as involved as Iraq.

hil-LIAR-y does indeed OFTEN brag of her ONLY experience - she USES her FIRST LADY monicker as THE MAJOR item on her resume as far as experince goes
that makes hil-LIAR-y just as qualified to be president as LURLEEN WALLACE was to be governor of alabama when that trick was pulled BEFORE (to circumvent the alabama state constitution which contained term limits)
billary clinton (AKA GOLLUM - desperately seeking to get his "precious" ring of power back) is giving a major speech for hil-LIAR-y this very hour in the texas campaign at A&M
I DO NOT SEE MRS. OBAMA, HUCKABEE, PAUL, NADER OR MCCAIN GIVING MAJOR SPEECHES TODAY - DO YOU ????
OF COURSE NOT
nor do I even see where they have been invited to speak by a major university
tell me this entire HilLIARy 100million dollar campaign is NOT about putting billary back in control and i'll sell you some swampland
AMERICA DOES NOT WANT ANY MORE BUSH - CLINTON - BUSH - CLINTON
HILLIARY AND BILLARY GO AWAY - WE DO NOT WANT YOU - JUST GO AWAY
CLINTONS GO AWAY - AMERICA NEEDS CHANGE IN ORDER TO SURVIVE AND OUR PRESIDENCY IS NOT FUEL FOR YOUR ENORMOUS COMBINED EGO - THE WHITE HOUSE IS NOT YOUR PLAYGROUND
BILLARY AND HIL-LIAR-Y GO THE HELLLLL AWAY -
YOU ARE NOT WANTED !!!
YOU ARE CERTAINLY NOT NEEDED (IN FACT, YOU CAN ONLY CAUSE MORE HARM AND DIVISION - AT BEST)
TAKE YOUR DOUBLE STANDARDS, LIES, UNRELEASED TAX FORMS, FEAR TACTICS, CHEATING, BRAGGING, DIVISIVENESS AND INCESSANT WHINING WITH YOU !

I am hoping that the American people will be able to see in time that Hillary has no foreign policy experience as such (apart from relying on her years as former first lady) and her judgment on the war in Iraq is self-evident of what type of decisions she will be making if ever she becomes president.
The sad fact is that people are ready to buy in whatever Hillary says and they are prepared to vote for her. Which means that she is going to win Ohio and Rhode Island and Obama is likely to win Vermont and Texas, if things stay as they look.
Just like Tuesday Feb 5, the next round of primaries in Texas and Ohio, are far to settle the context of the Dem party candidates. Things are likely to go further, possibly beyond Pennsylvania on April 22, because there is no winner-take-all scenario.
If votes during the next round of primaries, are split as I predict, undecided superdelegates MAY start moving to Obama's side because he will still lead the delegates count, thus forcing Clinton to concede (only speculating). However, if Hillary is to win all 4 states (unlikely), then things could be more complicated.
If the Dem party don't act swiftly to end this context, they are in danger of loosing to the Rep in November. It will be a disaster for America to have another 4 to 8 years of Rep administration.

Obama supporters, stop the Hillary bashing. If you're a Hillary supporter and you say 'If Hillary doesn't win, I'm voting for McCain, you just prove the point that there's no difference between Democrats and Republicans. If Hillary wins a majority of pledged delegates then I'll vote for her, if Obama keeps his lead after Tuesday, I'll vote for him in the general. If you stop forgetting for a second who the true enemy of American progress is, you'll doom us to four more years of Bush-lite. Enough already, grow up.

Mr. Barack Hussein Obama didn't use good judgement when he partnered with the Syrian meth. user Mr. Rezko. I see Tony Rezko has now hit the national news cycle along with a new player from Iraq. Mrs. Clinton wants him to start answering questions about these two swarthy, and shady middle eastern hucksters. This development cannot be helpful for his campaign, but there is some good news, he has been endorsed by the great Imam Mr. Lewis Farahkan. I
see where Mrs. Clinton is now ahead in Texas, Ohio, and Rhode Island, this thing ain't over yet. Look for Barack Hussein Obama to fade in the next two
weeks or so, he's got a lot of explaining to do, and he doesn't do well at that, unless you consider stammering doing well.

The only reason Obama keeps asking for Hillary to drop out is he knows his winning streak is over.
Obama's campaign is always copying this person or that, what about how similar he sounds to George Bush Senior who promised US a Kinder, Gentler America. Obama can't think for himself and he expects us to elect him president.
I have Hope, Faith, and Trust in Hillary and Hillary will win OH, TX, RI, VT, and she will face McCain and win!
Hillary Clinton will be the next president!

Dont we still live in a democracy? How DARE she assume that everything that she has done since age 25 uniquely qualifies her to be leader of the free world, but Obama's 21 years of experience since then is meaningless? How DARE she take us for fools by taking co-credit for everything her HUSBAND did while ducking all of his mistakes? And who elected HER president anyway? I'm sorry, but attending state funerals in Monrovia et al does NOT make you the person who should be answering the phone at 3 am. How DARE she try to duck her vote to start an unjust, unnecessary, and unending war? HOW DARE SHE??

If I could ask Hillary ONE question, it would be; How was it that MILLIONS of people around the world knew enough to gather and protest this war ? We wrote letters. We marched. We did not have access to special intelligence.
Hillary made a choice and I suspect it was to please her big money/lobby.
I guess if we'd sent money instead of marching....

hey dime, there are three and only three reasons anyone could POSSIBLY vote for Hil-LIAR-y and her camera-grubbing spouse
1) vote for a woman solely because of the fact she is a woman - i.e. blatant and despicable sexism
2) voting to circumvent the U.S. Constitution term limits regarding the presidency so as to give billary his "vindication" which he needs so badly for the umpteenth time
3) keep the ultra-rich, megacorporations and lobbyist in control of the country so they can all fatten themselves a bit more like they have been doing for the past 15-20 years siphoning the resources of the middle class so the ultra rich (most of whom are not even American tycoons) can get even richer off of the sweat of the hard working middle class of America
America NEEDS change - hil-LIAR-y is the most ANTICHANGE candidate left in the race - to include OBAMA, MCCAIN, PAUL, HUCKABEE AND NADER
GO AWAY HIL-LIAR-Y
WE DO NOT WANT YOU
NOONE WANTS YOU - NOONE AT ALL - EXCEPT OF COURSE, THE ULTRA-RICH, THE BILLARY LOYALISTS (MOST OF WHICH ARE EITHER DELUSIONAL, ULTRA-RICH, PARDONED CRIMINALS AND ULTRA-RICH PARDONED CRIMINALS), AND A HANDFUL OF FEMINISTS WHO ARE VOTING BASED SOLELY ON THE ABSENCE OR PRESENCE OF TWO X CHROMOSOMES
NO ONE ELSE WANTS HIL-LIAR-Y AND HER LOUDMOUTH DIVISIVE SPOUSE AND HER SAME OLD, SAME OLD WASHINGTON ALL TALK AND PANDERING AND NO ACTION TACTICS WITH SIDE DISHES OF CONSTANT WHINING AND SPECIAL INTEREST CRONEYISM
HIL-LIAR-Y, YOU ARE THE ANTI-CHANGE CANDIDATE
HIL-LIAR-Y IS THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN TO AMERICA
NO BUSH-CLINTON-BUSH-CLINTON
HIL-LIAR-Y TAKE YOUR DOUBLE STANDARDS, FEAR TACTICS AND LOUD MOUTH PHILANDERING HUSBAND AND GO AWAY

tom,
Lovely rant. Notice all I said was you forgot "hussein in solidarity." You and I both know that there is no convincing you. Of course I'm going to disagree with your convenient generalization. And retort with another convenient generalization. People who vote for Obama only vote for him because of three things...
His race- just look at the black community, the only vote because of his skin color.
His gender- just look at the male vote, they hate the idea of a female leader at all costs
He's real slick- he was for lobby money until he was against it, and he still manages to circumvent that. White collar crime crooks like his cunning sensibility.
Enough of the trivial over simplification... I will say one thing. I hope you understand that generally speaking women voters historically are less likely to support women in politics for office. They like her because they see something in her other than her name(most women looked down upon the whole affair) and her gender(turn off for women historically).
I know you disagree. I don't need a confirmation. I've seen, not read, most of your rants. You've got that Roger Morris thing happening, except it reads like manic depression.

"...Barack Obama had his shots ready..."
- J. McCormick
Win or lose, you have to hand it to Barack. He came to play (hard).
The Clinton's had him on the run early, but lately he just seems to have sharpened his political knives - even sending McCain the message that he's not going to sit back and take his cheap shots like past Democratic nominees have done.
I can see why McCain would prefer to take on Hillary. He can stand losing to Hillary. Losing to Barack would be intolerable. He'll have a meltdown if he loses to Barack.
If Barack continues to fight like this, he's going to make it hard for me to avoid contributing to his campaign.

The over the top criticisms of Hilary and anyone who supports her (no I don't work for HIlary--but it's obvious the Obama team has sent some paid staffers to pretend to be 'grassroots' workers--some of them have even uttered the words 'I'm not here' at some events when confronted) show a real lack of experience. Hilary may not have beenpresident, but, she was not collecting a 1/4 million a year from a health car provider while our government experienced peace and a roaring economy. She was WORKING for us, c'mon, admit it. You liked her, Obamites. You did. You want the one candidate you've only ever worked for now. That's understandable. But let's be mature about this. We don't want McCain. Obama had better leave this race when he loses Ohio and Texas and let the dems heal for the big fight in the Fall, lest he be called a spoiler. Lest he encourage all the irresponsible Hilary bashers on all these blogs to do stupid things that cost us our one last chance to take this country back from the brink of fascism.
Or do you like having the govenrment spy on your emails? Say, what's Obama done about that? NOTHING! He's been busy campaigning and visiting his beautiful life in the Rezko mansion.
He should never have entered the race with that sword of damocles hanging over his head. He should have dropped out and teamed up with Edwards, but his ego would not let him do that.
Yes. How DARE he imply Hilary was uninformed. The young turk should have known that it would have been politicial suicide to vote against the war. And, given his cowardly support as Senator for 'clean coal', coal gassification, and nuclear power, we KNOW he understands how politics works. He stayed in the position because he had to vote for some things he since backed away from. I don't feel I know enough about this guy. He seems too much of a rank opportunist right now.

After Hillary Clinton's racist equivocation on 60 minutes tonight, there is no way in hell I would vote for her or any of her minions (or endorsers) for dogcatcher, much less president. She is dishonest, slimy, and snide and shame on her for trying to use her own racist slurs to try and win Texas and Ohio. Really, there is no depth too low for her to satisfy her blind ambition.
This comes from someone who was (emphasis on past tense) a fan, but she has gone too far. Let's hope Tuesday is her last day on the campaign trail.

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..
You Might Be An Idiot!
If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)
Best regards

fair enough, dime - touche !
I would be the first to admit that I have become a one issue - one dimensional opinion giver - and to that degree I may lose objectivity over various newslines - but my desire that the clintons be denied their retaking of power is initially based entirely on objective observations of their character, positions and actions and applied logically as to the question of what will happen to our country and our world if the clintons get their way in this election
if the clintons are placed back in power, many bad things will likely happen among which are more divisiveness in our country
that one reason alone could be enough for someone who loves his country to legitimately want the clintons to remain forever on the sidelines (at most)
if you ask me (and I admit no one does), hillary could have been a more legit candidate had she distanced herself from bill, admitted her mistakes in the past and looked forward (from the beginning) - she did none of those things
I do not however, think she should be underestimated and that is why I will plead one last time (I promise)
NO MORE BUSH-CLINTON-BUSH-CLINTON
have a blessed week everyone - no matter your political inclinations

The Hillary Show is getting really old. All she's done of late is confirm peoples worst fear about the Clintons.
The Clintons have managed to transform themselves from Democratic royalty into ruthless, backwoods, win at all cost Hillrods in the course of a few weeks.
"They are going to have a very hard choice to make after Tuesday if she loses Texas or Ohio," top Obama adviser David Axelrod said Saturday. "There are people in the party who are very concerned about this turning into some kind of a Bataan Death March."
Hillary's Bataan Death March continues. Whether Democratic voters like it or not!!!

Anyone read Hilarys book? Where she talks about how she was in hostile territory and landed in a war zone, this was back in clintons office. She claims that this incident is her "expierence.'' Yet she was i one of the most secure regions in that area. The pilot even discredited her story saying it was a safe area. She landed there with Sheryl Crow and chelsea clinton. Sorry but if i had a doctor of 8 years say hey man im going to let me wife do surgery on you she has just been in the room for the past 8 years. Has said a few things but really has no expierence. You ok with letting her operate on you? Hell no.

If Barack continues to fight like this, he's going to make it hard for me to avoid contributing to his campaign.

Hillary Clinton is has excellent legislative skills. Barack Obama has excellent executive skills. Look at how each individual campaign is being run. I'm looking for an executive to run my country, one who can make the tough decisions when needed and not have to look at a poll before making that decision. That's why I voted for Obama.

Ummm, zing! Jeez Hillary, you're looking pretty pathetic.
Don't go down in a blaze of glory, bow out gracefully. You can lead Congressional Democrats for the next generation and be a real force for change in the Senate.

One of the more heinous of the Republican-led process abuses in Congress over their period of control, a vast majority of the legislature Republicans allowed on the floor was done on an "emergency" vote, which left very little time for actually reading the legislature (although the Republicans, through committee domination, had already had thorough acquaintance with the wording) and even less opportunity to debate thoroughly.
A lot of the votes were given to Dems as: "Are you voting with us or are you a stinking traitor? Does America survive, or do you vote against this bill? You have an hour to decide (on this 96-page document)."

Obama, meanwhile, called on Clinton to offer more specifics of her own as he spoke to what his campaign said was an audience of more than 3,000 inside and outside the school.
"We're still waiting to hear Sen. Clinton tell us what precise foreign policy experience that she is claiming that makes her prepared to answer that phone call at three in the morning," he said.'

Right on, Obama! And the American people are still waiting too, for Hillary Clinton to show us her this foreign policy experience she claims she has; the American people are also still waiting for her to tell us how she will enforce her mandate on what she calls her the best health care plan over Obama's; the American people are still waiting for her to tell us about that photo of her and Bill Clinton appearing with Rezko, who Hillary labeled a slum lord, whose trial starts today; the American people are still waiting for her to show us her tax returns -- BEFORE THE NOMINATION. Yes, Hillary, we are still waiting...and waiting...and waiting....
