A while back, we speculated on the possibility of Republican voters in the Lone Star state, faced with an uninteresting, essentially-decided contest between John McCain and Mike Huckabee, crossing over to make mischief in the Democratic primary by voting for Hillary Clinton to prolong the Democrats' damaging intra-party struggle for several more weeks.
We'd heard rumors about this and the Dallas Morning News had written about the possibility.
Then, on his Monday broadcast, conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh with his national audience of some 13 million aggressively pushed the idea to his listeners in Texas. Bill O'Reilly, among others, also talked about the possibility on his national radio program, but did not advocate such tactics.
By now, some of you may have heard, that Clinton did pull off a popular vote win over Barack Obama in Texas which, combined with her wins in Rhode Island and Ohio, revived her campaign and fundraising and made Pennsylvania's primary on April 22 the newest of many days of decisive decision for Democrats, while McCain clinched his nomination and moved on to begin organizing nationally.
Now, Susan Davis over at the Wall Street Journal's Washington Wire has found evidence among some Democrats of possibly enough GOP hijinks to make a difference in Texas.
Only 9% of voters in the Democratic primary there were Republican and Obama, as he has elsewhere, drew more of them than Clinton.
But in Texas the margin was much closer than it had been in other states. It was 53 percent for Obama and 46 percent for Clinton in Texas, but as recently as Wisconsin it was 72 percent Obama to 28 percent for Clinton and in Virginia 72 percent to 23 percent.
Davis also interviewed one precinct worker who personally tracked dozens of participants in the Democratic balloting who proudly identified themselves as Limbaugh voters, Republicans crossing over.
Clinton won the Texas vote with 50.9%, compared to 47.4% for Obama, or roughly a 100,000-vote difference. Was the Republican vote the margin of Clinton's victory? Hard to say, but it certainly added to her margin in what was a huge psychological boost, even though under Texas' cockamamie primary/caucus system Obama may actually end up with more convention delegates.
It's not so much that the conservative broadcasters tried to help McCain, whom they have their own doubts about, as it is to force Democrats to fight each other longer, using up valuable resources, energies and precious days of general election planning while perhaps engendering harder feelings among the eventual losing side.
As the Republicans for Obama website complained, "Hillary Clinton owes her political life to Rush Limbaugh."
But under the category of "be very careful what you wish for":
Wouldn't it be a stunning historical irony if Clinton, who's worked hard to adhere closer to the all-important general election political center than Obama, won the nomination in August and the election in November, all thanks to this vast right-wing conspiracy that briefly swallowed its hate of her in March to save her bacon in Texas?

Uh oh. This flies in the face of what jacksmith has been posting on every swamp story the last 5 days running.
If Repubs jump in, then so be it. This thing is over. Obama is in front and can't be caught. If Billary was in the lead, they would be calling for him to drop out. This is now all about how the Clinton's will be remembered. So far, they've shown that they'll go all the way down in flames and they don't care who they'll take with them.

I guess then they will have to vote twice while holding their nose.

Ah, we all missed the point! Keep the ol' witch in the running long enough for her to really expose what she is made of, foul mouth, lier, sneak, thief, and user. The longer she runs, the more of this stuff comes out.... You go Rush!

As an Ohio resident, I can tell you that the same thing happened here. Many Republican voters in my neighborhood pulled a Democratic ballot because the Republican race was over. Some went for Obama because they had enough of the Clinton years. Others went for Clinton because they wanted her to spend weeks and dollars learning how to campaign against Obama, lessons that might help later in the fall. Hillary's recent notice of Obama's lack of experience is one example. She will seek other weak spots in the next month or two.

Be careful Republics, if you vote in a Democratic primary you will get bombarded with mailings from each and every Lefty Loon organization. Proceed with caution. Don't you people have better things to do? I thought you were the party of family values, shouldn't you be spending this time instead with your family? What a novel idea?

Now, IF Hills wins it all, will Rush try to claim her servitude, as he did every con from Lessor Salamander to GWB?
BWWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Better late tan never. This is old news.
Hillary Clinton has a new best friend: Rush Limbaugh. The eponymous host of The Rush Limbaugh Show — which, according to its own website, is “the most listened to radio talk show in America, broadcast on over 600 radio stations nationwide” — this week began encouraging his listeners to vote for Hillary Clinton.
Urging his army of ‘DittoHeads’ (as Limbaugh’s loyal listeners call themselves) to vote for a woman whom Limbaugh has spent 16 years vilifying as the she-devil incarnate might seem a surprising move on El Rushbo’s part. But if you listen to Limbaugh regularly, it actually makes perfect sense.
“We need Hillary,” Limbaugh declared on his show on February 26. “We need the soap opera. Hillary Clinton is J. R. Ewing, and her husband, Bill, is Sue Ellen. We need to keep this soap opera going, but we also need the chaos,” Limbaugh added.
In a segment entitled, “We Started Mrs. Clinton’s Slide, But Now We Need Her to Stay Alive,” Limbaugh argued that Hillary was now the Republicans’ best hope for victory in November.

Do political reporters know anything?
The above article offers as "evidence" that Texas Republican crossovers saved Clinton the anecdotal evidence of "one precinct worker" whom the WSJ talked to.
Pretty thin evidence, I'd say. Especially since the "precinct worker" is an admitted Obama supporter and Democratic Party activist.
And the anecdote flies in the face of the known results.
Do the math, reporters. There were 2.8 million votes in the Texas Democratic primary, which Clinton won by about 100,000. If 9% of that vote was cast by Republicans, that would indicate about 252,000 Republican crossovers. If Obama won 53% of said Republicans, he won the Republican crossover vote by some 17,000.
In other words, the easily ascertainable facts show that Clinton won among Democrats in Texas by about 117,000.
For the Republican crossover vote to have put Clinton over, she would have had to pile up a 100,000 margin among the 252,000 crossovers. Put another way, she would have had to have won more than 70% of the crossover vote. According to the exit polls, she won about 46% of that vote.

If we saw this sort of movement in Texas, I think we'll see even more of it now in Mississippi. There's nothing more dangerous than bored Republicans.

Rush Limbaugh - just goes to show that GOP looks the other way when one of their own is involved in illgal drugs or sex and so on..... they tend to forget and put their blinders on. Rush is a drugged up, overweight looser......

I love it, Hillary owes her political life (for now) to Rush! I can't believe all the whiners claiming that the media is giving Hillary a hard time and fawning over Obama. Now she's resorting to sending Ferraro out to whine that Obama is lucky he's not a white man. These Clinton's are pathetic. Go Rush!!
Posted by: DanMan | March 11, 2008 2:00 PM
Ahhhhh, finally the media has rediscovered its raison d'etre, painting Senator Clinton's losses as deserved and discrediting her victories as suspicious flukes...and of course, showering praise on our savior, Senator Obama. Praise the lord!!!!

If by a miracle Hillary Clinton wins the nomination then goes on to trounce Mr. Straight Talk (NOT), as she is sure to do, then the Repubs can blame Limbaugh. That would be ironic but nice.

Ferraro speaks for Mrs. Clinton. Yes, indeed, a white multi-millionaire wife of the President of the US has a tougher time in the US than a black man raised by a teenage single parent. I am not African American, but as a senior citizen feminist I am appalled and furious at these Clintonian sleaze and slime tactics. Rush Limbaugh’s call for Republicans to cross over to vote for Mrs. Clinton to keep the race going and “bloody” Obama brought out over 4% of the so-called Hillary voters in Texas, and this fact has been supported by both Hillary precinct folks and exit polls. Hillary is gaming the system, wink, wink, playing the gender, race and poor-me-class (but I loaned myself five million of my own money as a good investment to win the presidency) cards.

DON'T BE DUPED!!!
Large numbers of Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses. Because they feel he would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And because they feel that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket would be unbeatable. And also because with a Clinton and Obama ticket you are almost 100% certain to get quality, affordable universal health care very fast.
You see, the medical and insurance industry mostly support the republicans with the money they ripped off from you. And they don’t want you to have quality, affordable universal health care. They want to be able to continue to rip you off, and kill you and your children by continuing to deny you life saving medical care. So they can make more profit for them-self.
Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama’s. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!
As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.
If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is. YOUNG PEOPLE. DON’T BE DUPED! Think about it. You have the most to lose.
The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket now! All democrats need to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton. So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.
Fortunately the Clinton’s have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic comebacks of Hillary Clinton’s. Only the Clinton’s are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your NOMINEE. They are the best I have ever seen.
You should be angry America. “This is not a game” (Hillary Clinton)
Sincerely
jacksmith...

I am shocked that the Democratic Party is so incompentent. Democrats should work to abolish this open ballon nonsense. If Republicans are crossing their party lines and voting for Democrats only to go back to a Republican in general election that will produce a weak Democratic nominee.
Howard Dean needs to put an end to this in future elections. While at it make sure winner takes it all applies to Democrats as well.

Did it ever dawn on you that some Republicans may have voted for Barack Obama because they want to make sure that, regardless of who wins, it won't be the worst candidate? That is, that they might simply want to eliminate Hillary?
I'm a Republican. If I had voted in my State’s Democrat primary (which I didn't), I would have voted for Obama. I would not have voted for him in the belief that he is the weaker candidate or the one more likely to be defeated by McCain. I would have voted for him simply because he is much better than Hillary. I think everyone has a vested interest in seeing that only the best candidates are left running for President. After all, when all this seemingly endless electioneering is over, the person elected President is the President of Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike. We all have a stake in best outcome.

So, what do you think he should do? Or, better yet, what do you think he can do?
Even in States where only registered Democrats can vote in a Democrat primary, one could prevent people from crossing party lines to vote only by prohibiting people from changing party registration more than once in any campaign cycle. I don’t know how Howard is going to get all fifty States to go along with that.

Makes sense. Hillary is great for Rush's business. And her lust for her own Presidency makes it easy for Rush to play her like a drum.
If she could sell Chelsea's soul for the nomination, Hillary would play "Let's Make A Deal".

Eh, the Republicans are just blowing smoke up their patooty if they think McGeezer can defeat either Obama or Clinton. Every Dem I know was elated with their choices this season, a veritable field of dream candidates. Well, all right, minus Dennis the K – but still it was interesting to note that the wife was such a babe! CNN certainly thought so, too. So this is all hair splitting and come November I doubt if there will be any animosity between Obama and Clinton supporters.

I voted for Hillary and I am a republican, I am not worried about the November election, because Republicans will close ranks, meanwhile, Democrats are beating each other up and wasting money and time, Its choice...
