Most Americans say the nation is ready for a black president.
More white Americans say so.
In a survey conducted by CNN, Essence magazine and Opinion Research Corp., an overwhelming majority of those interviewed say the nation is ready for a black president. More say so on the question of a black president than on the question of a woman as president -- lending some support to what retired Sen. George McGovern, an erstwhile candidate for president and current supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton, has said about this year's race.
The ranks of Americans saying the nation is ready for a black president also have grown since similar surveys were conducted in late 2006 -- suggesting, perhaps, that many also have grown more comfortable with the personage filling the role of the candidate who could become the first African-American presidential candidate of a major party: Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.
The majority of all voters surveyed -- 76 percent -- said America is ready for a black president -- with 78 percent of whites agreeing, and 69 percent of blacks agreeing.
A somewhat smaller, yet strong, majority -- 63 percent -- said America is ready for a woman as president -- and white voters also appeared more open (65 percent) than black voters (59 percent) to the prospect of Clinton becoming the first female candidate of a major party.
The news network and magazine sponsored a survey of 2,184 adults, conducted Mar. 36 through April 2, with a possible margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
To make clear conclusions about the sentiments of black voters, the survey included 1,104 black adults, with their results carrying a possible margin of error of plus or minus 3 points.
The percentages of whites saying America is ready for a black president had increased from 65 percent in a December 2006 survey to 72 percent in a January survey to 78 percent in the latest survey.
The percentages of blacks saying America is ready had grown from 54 percent in 2006 to 61 percent to 69 percent in the latest survey.

Remember it's racist, though, to suggest that that president be anyone other than Barack Obama.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the poll numbers. I think they're as high among whites as they are much because of the specific candidate and the possibility he holds out for unifying. That he is bi-racial is also a major factor, which probably tqkes some of the glow off the high number of white support. Still, it's a positive also that the poll was taken after the Rev. Wright flap (although your story has the misprinted date March 36). Probably also is the specific female candidate as well, given her reputation for being more polarizing.

I hope and pray that statement is true and that, America is indeed, ready for an African-American President, as I hope she is ready for a woman President, or any candidate that is different than a white candidate! Change is good, only when it remedies a wrong, or improves people's lives. Change for change sake,is a charade and is meant to fool people. I don't think an African-American or a woman President would be a charade. I think it would give America the lift she needs, after eight miserable years of the present administration!

America will warmly accept a black president, so long as Jane Fonda does not openly support him/her.

I don't see it as a black/white issue.
I see it as a Republic/Democrat issue.
I will happily vote for Hills or 'Bama.
And in a way, it's win win win.
After all, McCain is a liberal also.
All the other Republic candies plus the entire right wing 'movement' Christians told us so, right?

College Republican Jeffy,
Race baiting isn't going to win the clownish Republic Party the election this fall, you can bank on it, you nuts.
You rightwing luntic fringers might want to go back to the Swiftboat drawing board and come up with a new smear campaign for the fall election if you're depending on that working for you.

Why would anyone call Obama black when he is actually brown. If Obama's father is white and his mother is black in reversal, what will the story be then. Is he still black then. USA has a long history of diversity in race and is no longer a third world country. Therefore majority of Americans do not really play the race card. Obama has won so many voters' hearts which already indicate we are not in the least concern about race as long as we are voting for a candidate who we think can perform the highest role in this Nation. We have here a candidate who is a smart guy and is bidding to change the old politics in the whitehouse. That is the reason we vote for him since majority of Americans are tired of the Clintons and Bush and are ready to vote for change!

How is that race baiting, John? Here's a post from an Obama supporter claiming that people who say he's not "tough" are racist from the "Chicago" thread today:
"I think all this is Obama tough enough talk is racist. Hear me out. First of all he is intelligent, kind and even tempered. If Obama were a white man would people be saying that he's not tough? People often mistake kindness for weakness. I never understood why. Name me one day that Obama has shown weakness? Because Obama is a black man that whites are not AFRAID of then he must be weak and not like all the other scary black men. It's racist and I'm tired of hearing it. Finally, find me something that comes out of Obama's mouth. I don't care what everyone around him think. Nobody can control the beliefs of someone else.
Posted by: Carol | April 3, 2008 11:42 AM"
So explain, how is saying that he's not "tough" racist as "Carol says it is?"
How is this not the typical attack the messenger slash that is common of Obama supporters confronted with his lies about not accepting campaign donations from lobbyists or any number of other fictions?
And please, John, no name calling or other diversionary tactics, just facts. I've provided an example of what I've observed from the Obama crowd now have the decency to defend or denounce the example like an adult. Just the facts, please.
Someone might be race baiting here, but it's certainly not me.

College Republican Jeffy
You're race baiting and you know it.
I've got an idea for what the clownish Republic Party can run on this fall, something brand new and different...for them:
NEW POLICY PROPOSALS THAT ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE!!!
....and so far, as usual, I've yet to hear the GOPer's come up with ANYTHING other than the usual "don't look at me, look at what the other side is saying".

This Race issue has been used by Obama from the beginning. A quote of mine "Accuse your opponent of doing what you are doing so you will know what you are doing." is so Accurate/Correct/ throughout his entire campaign, and the almost 100% support he has in The Media, it appears the only way to get this false information exposed is by the Internet and this may also be a problem when he has so many supporters here and other Blogs that tend to shut out any TRUTH about his flaws.

Polls show what most people think in an ideal world. The problem is we will never live in an ideal world and to think otherwise, we would and are living in La La Land.

PS - Jeffy,
Here's one of your GOPer buddies who has perfected the art of race baiting, he usually calls himself "MJ" or "Vinny" but as you can see he'll do anything or call himself anything in order to take a few race baiting shots at Obama.

Yeah, the poor little angry old rich white guy Republicans like you have had such a tragic history in this country.
I mean, wasn't it only about 40 years ago or so that America finally agreed to let the angry old rich white guy Republicans like you legally vote?
Quit picking on the doughy angry white guys!, right MJ?

JE,
How right you are. Rich, white, Christians have so little sway in this democracy. I think they have only been in power for over 200 years or so.

I noticed that one too which I thought was odd. I know the percentage of voters that would vote for a "female" president would be much higher then the ones that would vote for "Hillary".
Jeffy, you noob. The inflamatory posts that you coppied and pasted here only go to support how tempered most Obama supporters are!! It's guys like you that help push more people for Obama.

How am I race baiting? Explain it. If you can make a post that has substance which you've never shown the ability to do in more than three years on this blog. I doubt if you even know what race baiting is. You seem to think that questioning anything Obama does is "race baiting." It's not.
I gave you a concrete example of the kind of ad hominem "they're racist" attacks Obama supporters turn on anyone questioning ANYTHING about him. Including that, shock and disbelief, a partial one-term senator might not yet have the political toughness to be president.
There sure is race baiting going on here but the one poster backing up his statements with same-day evidence isn't the one doing it.

DON'T BE DUPED !!!
Large numbers of Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses from early on. Because they feel he would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And because they feel that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket would be unbeatable. And also because with a Clinton and Obama ticket you are almost 100% certain to get quality, affordable universal health care very soon.
But first, all of you have to make certain that Hillary Clinton takes the democratic nomination and then the Whitehouse. NOW! is the time. THIS! is the moment you have all been working, and waiting for. You can do this America. “Carpe diem” (harvest the day).
I think Hillary Clinton see’s a beautiful world of plenty for all. She is a woman, and a mother. And it’s time America. Do this for your-selves, and your children’s future. You will have to work together on this and be aggressive, relentless, and creative. Americans face an even worse catastrophe ahead than the one you are living through now.
You see, the medical and insurance industry mostly support the republicans with the money they ripped off from you. And they don’t want you to have quality, affordable universal health care. They want to be able to continue to rip you off, and kill you and your children by continuing to deny you life saving medical care that you have already paid for. So they can continue to make more immoral profits for them-selves.
Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama’s. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!
As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.
Hillary Clinton has been OUT MANNED! OUT GUNNED! and OUT SPENT! 4 and 5 to 1. Yet Obama has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.
If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is. YOUNG PEOPLE. DON’T BE DUPED! Think about it. You have the most to lose.
The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket. Everyone needs to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton NOW! So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.
I think Barack Obama has a once in a life time chance to make the ultimate historic gesture for unity, and change in America by accepting Hillary Clinton’s offer as running mate. Such an act now would for ever seal Barack Obama’s place at the top of the list of Americas all time great leaders, and unifiers for all of history.
The democratic party, and the super-delegates have a decision to make. Are the democrats, and the democratic party going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee to fight for the American people. Or are the republicans going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee through vote fraud, and gaming the DEMOCRATIC party primaries, and caucuses.
Fortunately the Clinton’s have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic comebacks of Hillary Clinton’s. Only the Clinton’s are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your NOMINEE. They are the best I have ever seen.
“This is not a game” (Hillary Clinton)
Sincerely
jacksmith...

It's so bizarre that John E will often fill 3/4 of a thread with posts under different names... but s/he isn't smart enough to even try to disguise his/her style. And sometimes s/he even talks to himself (herself?) here.
That alone is too, too wierd. But there's more: poor little John E is still confused about his/her gender. Look at a few of her/his very many post name choices -- "John E"; "Obama Girl"; "Jim Shortz"; "Monica Lewinsky".
But the cherry atop the sundae is this ploy of falsely accusing other people of racism. Ironically, "John E" has a long history of malicious racist rants in the Swamp -- I know, I've been checking the archive. Do you really want to go there, "John E"? Do you want me to put the evidence of racism on the table, you fruitcake?

In response to the posting of jacksmith, I find your entire post to be uncharacteristically unDemocratic, in the sense that it is my way or the highway. We, the Democrats, are waging a battle for the hearts and minds of our great nation and you are stuck on petty interests. If it is not, Clinton/ Obama ticket, it is unfair coverage. Apparently, you are new to the political game, we are presently engaged in and not used to it, not going your way.
First, if you don't mind a few observations from an old political war horse.
We are Democrats, fighting to wrestle our White House back from the shills for corporate America, the Republicans. Our fellow Democrats are not our enemies, in spite of how desperately you would like your candidate to win. She is a worthy candidate and if she wins, I will vote for her and support her. On the other hand, if she doesn't win, I will still vote for the Democratic nominee, because I know, in my heart of hearts, he is every bit as good a candidate as any other Democratic candidate and twice the candidate that the Republicans can field!!! If it doesn't matter to you, whether a Democrat wins, than I suggest that you were never a Democratic voter, only a voter blinded by a special interest, more to do with personalities than issues. That is unfortubnate, but, I understand, that is politics. Sometimes we cut off our nose, to spite our face!!! Vote Democrat, you might like what you have done for our great nation!!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

But who knows what will happen in November. It's easy easy to say America is "ready" for a black president in a poll. But are the individual voters? Even some who would not think themselves to be prejudice, might just find something itching the back of their head that won't allow them to choose O'bama when they step in the voting booth.
It's kind of like the old "I'm for equality, as long as they don't move to my neighborhood" theory.
