INDIANAPOLIS -- The longer the Democratic presidential contest has progressed, the more committed supporters of Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton appear to be --to the point that a significant number tell pollsters they wouldn't vote for the other candidate if they became the nominee.
During an appearance before the editorial board of the Indianapolis Star today, Clinton was asked if she was risking a split within the Democratic Party, particularly a disaffected African-American constituency, if she were to win the nomination against Obama. Her answer appeared to more broadly encompass the question of those Democrats who decide not to vote or back presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
"I will make the case that we have to stand for our underlying values as Democrats--that no matter what the differences are between Sen. Obama and myself, they pale in comparison in the differences we have with Sen. McCain and the Republicans," Clinton said.
"Anyone, anyone, who voted for either of us should be absolutely committed to voting for the other because it would be the height of political foolishness to have voted for one of us and what we stand for and then either to stay home or not vote for a Democrat and instead vote for Sen. McCain."
Clinton said disaffected Democrats sitting out the fall election or backing a Republican "would be absolutely counter to everything that both and Barack and I stand for."
She did not address Obama's break today from his former pastor over the controversial remarks Rev. Jeremiah Wright made over the last few days.
With the Hoosier primary a week away, Clinton planned an intensive series of visits to Indiana, where polls show her locked in a tight race with Obama as she tries to extend her campaign. Earlier in the day, she picked up a critical endorsement from Mike Easley, the governor of North Carolina, which holds its primary along with Indiana on May 6 and is a state where Obama has been favored.
"This lady right here makes Rocky Balboa look like a pansy," Easley said in endorsing Clinton, a reference to the cinematic character with a theme song that was a frequent refrain during her victory last week in Pennsylvania.
On the northeast side of Indianapolis, Clinton spoke to workers at Miller Veneers, a family business that turns eighty years old next year, telling them of her plan--opposed by Obama--to suspend federal gas taxes with the revenue shortfall paid from a tax on the profits of oil companies, which she said have been "making out like bandits."
"I know that times are tough right now," Clinton said. "My opponent opposes giving consumers a break from the gas tax, but I believe the American people are getting squeezed pretty hard by everything happening, the housing crisis, the health care costs and now, of course, this increase in gas prices."
Obama's campaign took aim at both Clinton and McCain, who also has proposed a so-called gas-tax holiday, issuing a statement linking them as "the two Washington candidates" in the race who are trying to "distract voters" with "transparent political gimmicks" instead of providing "meaningful (economic) relief for working families."

Good luck, Senator Clinton. I think you will have to mend a lot of fences before anybody in the Democratic Party will listen to you! As I said, good luck, Senator!

When everyone realizes what a stupid idea this is, Bill Clinton will say, "She's a 60 year old woman, she was asked about the gas tax at 11 o'clock at night. She mis-spoke."

I'd become a devout flat-earth, know nothing Republican (like Herbie H aka MJ) before I would ever vote for Billary...or John McBush...

So Hillary doesn't care about the independent voters. She is only out for her party and the rest of us can go blow. This is what she calls "unifying" ugghhhh! Does she even listen to what she says? Obviously not since she keeps contradicting herself. This is not presidential material, not even close!

The only reason Hillary is still in this race is to damage Obama. Even if she wins EVERY REMAINING CONTEST by a 55-45 margin, she still comes up 115 delegates short.
I wouldn't vote for her if she was running against Charles Manson.

I'm sorry Hillary. If you lie and lie your way into the nomination...you will not get my vote. Never, ever I say. I will stay home. Obama is a decent human being, a trait you lack. I am professional white woman and you give all of us a bad name. Obama 08!!

Thank you Hillary Clinton for being a great Presidential Candidate!!
You are right on with your plan for Universal Healthcare, you are right on with your plans for education, you are right on for supporting working class America!!
In a time when a man named Obama is trying to pull off the biggest Schmoozing of America of recent history, you are rock solid in your character and your commitment to the American people.
Hillary, no skeletons of 20+ years of hate and racism are jumping out of your closet to claw America in the face.
After months of standing your ground in the face of formidable odds, you have proven that you have got what it takes. No other presidential candidate has had the stuff shoveled on them like you have, and you made it through to the other side.
Thank you Hillary for allowing us to continue to have God BLESS America. We are a nation with problems, but at the end of the day, I know you'll be right there fighting for us.

You people have no idea about reality in Washington. You just love to hate Clinton whether she is right or not. It is so obvious that she is the stronger most experienced and the one most likely to get things done with congress. So if she is nominated then go ahead and stay home and let the Republicans win. This IS what the Republicans are hoping for!!
You"ll only have yourselves to blame..no wait, I can here you whiners now "It was Clintons fault" whatever...
Good Luck America!!

Great Hillary.
Now prove you mean it by not kneecapping the other Dem candidate and setting the bar for attacks so low that the GOP can fairly say all their attacks are no worse than what Democrat said.
Hillary, you've got a long way to go to win votes of Independents of myself, but this is a good first step.

The Rev. Wright ordeal is done...now back to the facts...The media diagnoses every demo....the old...young...rich....poor...educated....uneducated.... bowlers, bluecollar, beer drinkers.....And somehow ALWAYS finds a way to give the advantage to Clinton. But it's time for the media to finally raise the most incredible point in the whole campaign. HILLARY HAS LOST THE SUPPORT OF AN ENTIRE RACE OF PEOPLE !!!!!!!! Do you know how incredibly sad this fact is ? Hillary Clinton (who's husband was so loved as to have been called The First Black President) has alienated the black people of America to such a degree that there is no way blacks will support her EVER. This has nothing to do with Obama !!!! Keep in mind folks....Hillary started this campaign with 82% of the black support. But as blacks learned more about her (Goldwater Girl....Against Civil Rights Act 1964...etc.) combined with her LBJ statements and Bill's minimizing of Obama (fairy tale...Jesse won S.Carolina too...etc) blacks were shocked...then incredibly offended beyond recovery. WE FEEL DECEIVED !!!! We hope that our friends of all races understand how we as blacks feel. This is the main story that needs to get out to ALL superdelegates. People across America are contacting the DNC 202-863-8000 to let them (and superdelegates) know that Hillary ABSOLUTELY KILLED HER ELECTABILTY. The truth is the truth !

Posted by: Joe | April 29, 2008 6:53 PM
Sounds to me like she's being prepared for a slow and soft landing. She's done so much polarizing damage within her base that the DNC will have to carefully welcome her back into the fold with some shred of dignity.
If the situation were reversed and it was Barack who needed 68% of all remaining delegates, had been operating in deficit spending over the last two months, had no plan for caucuses, had no post Feb 5 plans, had key advisers and spouses taking hundreds of thousands of dollars to promote deals that he campaigned against, had flat out lied about being shot at, and could only stay in the race by constantly attacking his opponent for something that people she knew said - do you think the media would treat him as if he had a prayer to win?
No - he'd be chastised along with Huckabee and Paul for staying in so long.
The fact is that we have to unite to avoid another Republican presidency.

Well, we know 2 things. Obama hasn't been yet caught in a complete lie, and doesn't have "I do not recall syndrome". He's said, yeah I did that, but I never heard that. That sounds a hell of a lot more honest than "Well gee, I was "co president" but I can't remember what happened even though it was extremely important. I'm sorry, but I have a real hard time believing anything Hillary says.

It's really amusing to watch hilary try to undo some of the damage she's spent the entire nominating process inflicting on the Democratic party. From the self-serving ("John McCain and I are prepared to be Commander in Chief.") to the flat out lies ("I dodged sniper fire in Bosnia.").
Not to mention the even more outlandish behavior of her husband.
I will vote for a leader. I will not vote for a politician. If Obama is not the nominee, then to heck with it. I haven't ever voted for a Clinton; I'm not about to start now.

Way off message, but I can't resist.....
I just saw something about the Giants going to the White House this week, the usual tradition for Super Bowl winners.
Would Hillary prefer the Steelers? The Giants? The Jets? The Eagles? She's from everywhere, so anyone will do.
I can't wait to see the Bears go to the White House, to visit President Barack Obama.
Just a thought...

how noble of hillary to make those comments, since she is the one who has been the divisive and negative campaigner. Also, did anyone notice, she borrowed Obama's words about their differences "paling in comparison" to the differences with McCain. Pandering demagogue, there never was a better one...

Bemused: No, we don't spew hatred...those of us who are 100% behind Obama are just TIRED of everyone gang-banging him (such as the "debate" when he was ganged up on by Hillary, Gibson and Stephanopoulos!!! )And the whole time he tried to stay on point and address Americans' concerns, and he did it VERY WELL!!! HILLARY AND Bill ARE SO PHONY...I'M GLAD THEIR LITTLE PLOY IS SEEN THROUGH FOR what it is!!! BS
Hillary's two part strategy is as simple as it is absurd.
A) bash her opponent with negative campaign, lies, guilt by association and the race card and make him less "electable"
B) trick as many idiots as possible into believing her new lie that "electability" is the only thing that matters
electability never was the main issue and never will be - two of the most controversial presidents of all time (dubya and bubba clinton) were "electable" while three of our most historically memorable presidents (lincoln, kennedy, and truman) were marginal candidates at best
and electability is a total misnomer because it CANNOT be promised
clinton simply cannot govern this country effectively
the clintons - more BS than ever

The vitriol toward Hillary expressed by the Obama supporters--be they from HQ roomfuls of bloggers or just stupid people who hate Hillary because they have issues with their mothers---it's going to be the thing that torpedoes his campaign for good and darn tooting soon.
The worse part of Rev. Wright's display was his utter lack of respect for the woman from the National Press Club reading those questions.
Keep it up.

I find Clinton's comments ironic, since she's pretty much running as a left-baiting Republican.
Her low-road campaign is a disgrace. Even the New York Times, which had endorsed her, said so in an editorial last week.
If she somehow manages to steal this nomination, I will leave my party of 30 years and re-register as an independent. And no, I will never vote for her.

"Clinton said disaffected Democrats sitting out the fall election or backing a Republican "would be absolutely counter to everything that both and Barack and I stand for."
But what does Hillary stand for? Lies and typical muck. Nothing I want our next president to be involved in. She did not have to address Obama's break with Wright - one of her own supporters orchestrated the media circus that NBC's Nora O'Donnell described as SEXIER THAN HEALTHCARE.
"The President thinks he has a marketing". problem. "I don't need more issues," he said. "I may need more slogans."
Mr. Jerry Della Femina, the Ad executive, a Republican, thinks the Democrats are in trouble because they do not have a unique selling proposition. "The product has to stand for something," he said. "And Clinton stands for everything, therefore he stands for nothing. The Democrats are going the way of Burma Shave and Crisco - products everyone loved and had in their homes. But they got old. They didn't have anything new to say about the product and after awhile they died." (Maureen Dowd)

http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/alerts/349
" Much of the news media have gone bonkers over Senator Obama, pandering and refusing to ask tough questions, while intensely and sometimes nastily grilling Senator Clinton. Pundits continue to stress that Clinton is "polarizing," and that 41 percent of voters say they won’t vote for her as if to cement a self-defeating prophecy."
This is from the Clinton supporter that hoooked up the sooo SEXY (NBC, Nora O'Donnell) Rev. Jeremiah Wright media tour.
No Hillary, no vote for you.

After this nomination process, I will take some time to come back if Hillary wins the nomination. I will because she is better than McCain but that last month of watching the guilt by association (Wright and Ayers) crap propelled into and by the media with no small help from Hillary has made me yes, bitter.
However, I still prefer Obama over Clinton because, while on many issues they are similar, she is too much of a liberal hawk. Her comments about a nuclear envelope over the middle east and obliterating Iran confirmed this for me. I much prefer Obama's soft power approach to foreign policy. Furthermore, I felt and still feel that in the smaller states that Hillary felt that she could ignore, she will do harm to down ticket candidates.

Hillary supporter, Dr. Rev. Barbara Reynolds is a media consultant who has endorsed Hillary on her website: Reynoldsnews.com. So, Dr. Reynolds reached out to Rev. Wright and tempted him to tell his story at the Press Club to redeem his good name and the good Rev. Wright took the "bite." This ploy and scheme by Hillary supporter, Dr. Reynolds backfired and has helped Barack redeem his campaign!
Barack has to reiterrate all that got people interested in his campaign in the first place, the fact that he does stand for unity and for reaching out to all classes of people, which deflects that he is an elitist. That he works and stands for the working people and that he always has. That to get anything passed these days you need Change in Washington, away from Corporations and the special interest and invest in people! There comes a time in each Society for the sake of survival, they must Change and As a man of "goodwill", it was hard for Barack to see the egomaniac in Wright. However, when it became clear by the total spectacle Wright made of himself in front of national TV on all Three (3) cable-news channels which played his Entire Speech, something usually Reserved for Presidents! Barack was right to divorce himself from Wright for the sake of the work the and change he is trying to bring to the people. One Ego cannot get in the way of the "good" of the whole!
Barack "Investing in People!"

Clinton is simply a lunatic. You can't throw the kind of filth she's been throwing and expect support from those you've insulted. Besides, it's not just her filth, it's utterly disgusting stuff like her threatening eighty million souls with incineration.
She hasn't a principle in her body, that is, unless you count insatiable ambition and willingness to do anything to satisfy it as a principle.
Calling for a break on gasoline is a perfect example of a non-policy intended only to get votes from pick-up truck drivers. Americans need to adjust to the new economic realities the same way others are doing. Anything else isn't policy, it's pandering.
I'm convinced that despite her filth, she won't win the nomination.
And even if she could, she's a sure loser. The Republicans are expert at exploiting the kind of background she has.
But what she can do, she's doing, and that's absolutely spoil this opportunity for the Democrats.
In fact, it is more than an opportunity for the Democrats she's spoiling, it's an opportunity for the world to see a fresh bright face and new start from America.
Obama is the finest American political voice in decades, and she's doing everything she can to silence it. That's not competition, that's destructiveness, just like her threat of mass murder in Iran.

When Hillary steals the nomination, and she will have to steal it, it's happening already, I suppose I'll just suck it up and vote for her even though I despise her and all her minions. I don't think the country can stand 4 more years of the Republicans. I'm very sad about it, but I think HRC is well on her way to the nomination, and what most of want matters not one little bit.

Posted by: Denise | April 30, 2008 9:06 AM
Senator Clinton calls for all memebers of the Democratic Party to support the nominee, whether it is her or Obama, something that Obama has yet to do, and what is the response by the Obama-ites?More slurs and accusations against Senator Clinton. She's "stealing " the nomination." Stealing it from who? As of yet the Democrats do not have a nominee. That is why the primary election is still pertinent. "Well Obama is ahead in delegates." As of this date he is but neither Obama or Clinton can win enough delegates to secure the nomination. Can't be done.So as Obama does not have the nomination, how does Senator Clinton "steal" it? If Obama does manage to get the nomination, as a Democrat I will support the nominee of my party. But if Obama loses either the nomination or, if he is the Democratic nominee, the general election, the main reason will not be Rev, Wright or Tony Rezko; it will be mainly due to the vitriole and intolerence of his followers.
