The Clinton campaign, admitting that the Obama campaign has outspent it by three-to-one on television ads in Pennsylvania, is taking a shot at one of Obama’s TV ads declaring himself free of oil company money.
Camp Clinton is airing its reply on a lower-budget radio circuit – and, with the Illinois senator’s higher-cost pursuit of Democratic primary voters, in a state where polls show the race tightening, Clinton’s backers are suggesting that Obama cannot afford to lose Pennsylvania.
The reality is, Clinton, who started with an apparently huge advantage in Pennsylvania, needs a strong win there on April 22 to make her case that she is the most electable Democratic candidate.
For now, the Clinton campaign is calling on the Obama campaign to pull down its TV ad. And the Obama camp is calling the Clinton radio response a misfire.
“It’s essentially an ad running here in Pennsylvania where Sen. Obama says he hasn’t taken any money from oil companies,’’ Mark Nevins, communications director for the Clinton campaign, said today with a laugh. “The reason is, it’s illegal. You can’t take money from oil companies.’’
Corporate contributions are prohibited in federal election campaigns, while the employees of companies can contribute to candidates. And, the Clinton campaign spokesman says: “What Sen. Obama does not tell you, while even though he can not take money from oil companies, which nobody can, he has taken $200,000 from employees of oil companies… Two of his bundlers are top-executives of oil companies.’’
In his TV ad, the Illinois senator says: “I'm Barack Obama, and I don't take money from oil companies or lobbyists, and I won't let them block change any more."
Obama has collected $213,884 from people in the oil and gas industry as of Feb. 29th, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Clinton has collected $306,813 from the same sources. Robert Cavnar, listed as a bundler who has raised between $50,000 to $100,000 for the Obama campaign, is chairman and CEO of Mission Resources Corp. of Houston. George Kaiser, a bundler in the same range, is CEO of Tulsa-based Kaiser-Francis Oil Company.
In the Clinton campaign’s radio ad, the narrator states: “In his TV ads, Barack Obama sounds like he'll take on the oil companies. "I don't take money from oil companies."
“What he doesn’t tell you is that “no candidate does….they cant,” according to the Annenberg Center’s Factcheck.org,’’ the ad continues. “It's been against the law for companies to donate to candidates for a hundred years. Listen to Barack Obama some more: ‘Now Exxon's making forty billion dollars a year and we're paying three fifty for gas.’ Obama also doesn't mention that he voted for the Bush Cheney energy bill. It was called a piñata of perks and the best energy bill corporations could buy. Hillary Clinton voted against that bill.
“She’s the one who will make the oil companies pay to set up a new strategic energy fund that will cut our dependence on foreign oil .invest in new clean energy, and create five million new jobs,’’ the ad continues. “It's time for president who takes on the oil companies in real life, not just on TV. Hillary Clinton.’’
Howard Wolfson, communications director for the Clinton campaign, sayy of the Obama ad: “We asked him to take it down. He’s obviously not going to take it down… Given the fact that he is not going to take his ad down… we are forced to put up an ad to set the record straight.’’
Hari Sevugan, spokesperson for the Obama campaign, said: "Just like her last tall tale about dodging sniper fire in Bosnia, Sen. Clinton has misfired with her latest negative ad.
'The fact is, Barack Obama takes no money from Washington lobbyists or PACs while Senator Clinton has taken more than any Democrat or Republican in this race, and that includes oil companies. Obama has been a Senate leader in fighting for higher fuel efficiency standards, alternative fuels and for the repeal of tax breaks for oil companies,'' Sevugan said.
"Until this year, Sen. Clinton opposed higher fuel efficiency standards and in 2004 she supported a huge tax break for the oil industry,'' Sevugan added. "This just another example of the broken Washington politics that Barack Obama is running to change."
Obama has spent $6.5 million on TV ads in Pennsylvania, Wolfson says, and the Clinton campaign has spent $2.5 million – “which means we are being outspent about three to one’
“He is doing everything he can to win in Pennsylvania,’’ Wolfson said, “and if he doesn’t win it will be a significant defeat for him.’’
And, as for the controversy surrounding Mark Penn, the former chief strategist of the Clinton campaign who also served as a paid consultant for Colombia in the promotion of a Free Trade Agreeement with the United States which Clinton opposes: “I think this is a lot of inside baseball,’’ Wolfson said. “I don’t think they care about who works on these campaigns and who doesn’t.’’

The oil company falsehood is just one of many lies Obama's told lately and Hillary's right to call him on it.M
No other candidate lies as often as Obama, but what's so blatant about this one is that even a cursory glance at his FEC filings shows that he accepts money from oil companies just like Hillary does. He must think the people of Pennsylvania are just as stupid as the sheep that follow him.

What a joke..
Maybe Clinton should make a TV ad of her own where she admits that she supported NAFTA and one where she admits that her husband Bill and her campaign flunkie, Mark Penn, have been working trade deals with the Colombian government on the side.

When a Republican McCain cheerleader like Jeff starts defending Hillary it must mean only one thing,:
Obama has officially won the Dem nomination in the eyes of the GOPer's!
Jeff, here's a place you can go where you'll be a big star, it's a place where all the Wingnut robots agree with each other all the time, it's 24/7 "good news" for John W McBush:

Hilliary Clinton is the BIGGEST LIAR running in this primary. No wonder she has such LOW points in the areas of TRUSTWORTHYNESS. As a women, she totally disgusts me, and I would NEVER vote her. Every time she opens her mouth, she lies.

Actually, John E, I'd rather Obama won the nomination. Every 50-state poll I've seen has McCain cleaning Obama's clock with more than 270 electoral votes as states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin go red, while Hillary leads in electoral votes against McCain.
What I'm objecting to here is the pattern of blatant lying by the Obama campaign. Faced with the facts in this post that shows oil execs absolutely do contribute to his campaign, can even you support this latest Obama lie?
Here's the fact that you want to ignore smacking you right in the face, John: Obama has collected $213,884 from people in the oil and gas industry as of Feb. 29th, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Jeff,
You're getting pretty cocky for it only being April.
The Dem vote is still split between two different candidates, if you think old man McCain has some overwhelming support that's going to carry him to the White House this fall that you're counting on right now then you're only fooling yourself.
John McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, and yet he said "I'm the only one the special interests don't give any money to."

why isnt the media covering barack obama's outrageous lies? it seems he will do and say anything to win PA.and the nomination. Its a good thing the majority are not blind sheep.

Ahh, but John, you're not listening. Answer the question! How do you defend Obama claiming to not take oil companies' money when he has already taken more than $200,000 of it? Do you not answer because you can't?
There's no need to try to divert the question to whether Hillary or McCain have lobbyists working for them. Neither have ever claimed they don't the way Obama has claimed he doesn't take oil company money.
It has nothing to do with my cockiness or any candidate's electability. It's a simple question, answer it. Or is it that you change the subject because you know the answer isn't good for your candidate?

Hillary is afraid to show her face in Public after the recent rash of: Lies, Miss Speak, Miss Remember and Miss Steps have come back to haunt her when the reality meets the long list of Bold Face Fibs. Besides Hillary can't afford TV Ads, she owes everyone now as it is. The TV Networks won't give the Clinton Camp any Credit. The Obama Campaign has Rewritten the Book on Campaign Financing. Obama's money comes from "People" at $100 average. Some of these People work for Oil Companies and as House Maids and everywhere in between. It is interesting that Clinton has received $100K more Money from the Oil companies than Obama that she is complaining about, more "Clinton Speak". Stick to the Radio Hillary along with Limbaugh and the other Fashioner of Facts. Hide behind the Mike and try and sound authentic, maybe there is a job for as a Shock Jock in the (Land of Life after the Primaries).

It's Ironic that this Bush-Cheney Energy Bill she brought up was actually a net tax on the oil Industry. It taxed more then it gave away. And the giveaways was for Energy efficiency incentives. In all fairness, it was initially packed full of incentives, but Democrats got most of that stuff out via Democratic controlled Congress. So Hillary not only takes lobbyist money, and more money from the oil industry she is lying about an Energy that good bi-Partisan Democrats help mold into good legislation.
"The reason I take money from Lobbyist is because they represent real people" -- Hillary Clinton

HRC is so distasteful displaying all these deceits and "do anything to win" strategies!! It's not going to work!! HRC. There is a high percentage of church goers who will not vote for a tell tales candidate for President!! Only the innocent and ignorant folks who are not in touch with reality are voting for you!! JUst when are you stepping down?? What a wastage of our resources you are!!!!

Even if it takes a billion dollars. Barack Obama will make sure we are not subjected to the Clintons wrath of lies, secrecy, scandal and mismanagement.

Once again, you people in the media are childish and acting ridiculous. Why don't you tell us some of the lies Obama has told as well? Because he has told quite a few himself.

She is lying again. She said, corporations are not allowed to contribute to political candidates, and then she goes and says, "misleading television ads claiming he doesn't take money from oil companies." I think she lost her head somewhere on the campaign trail.

Jeff-
What polls are you referring to?
According to Rasmussen:
"Wednesday, April 09, 2008
Advertisment
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows Barack Obama with a statistically insignificant one-point advantage over John McCain, 46% to 45%. While that lead is statistically insignificant, it is the first time Obama has had any advantage over McCain in a month"
Cleaning his clock? Looks like Obama is gaining ground and about to pass...
"...data shows that Democrats are given a 59.2% chance of winning the White House this year.
McCain is viewed favorably by 53% and unfavorably by 44%. Obama’s reviews are 53% favorable and 45% unfavorable. For Clinton, those numbers are 45% favorable, 52% unfavorable"
"The Rasmussen Reports shows the Electoral College race remains a Toss-Up. Democrats lead in states with 190 Electoral Votes while the GOP has the advantage in states with 189. When “leaners” are added, the Democrats lead 243 to 240."
Try this: "Hello President Obama, sir."

Jeff,
McCain has 59 lobbyists working for him and one of his lobbyists literally does his lobbying business out of the back of McCain's campaign bus, McCain's dirty and he's a liar.
I can't wait for the debates, McCain is going to look like the confused old man that he really is and that "straight-talk" BS is going to be all over campaign ads showing him lying and flip-flopping....and then, after McCain loses, Jeff will runaway and hide because that's what he always does.

all of the candidates lie about one thing or another. perhaps they think we are stupid. what i think is incredible is the money they are raising to campaign with is immense, when americans are fighting to make a living. and some of us are not able to make it. it feels like a slap in the face. we should demand an independant party and mandate public funding for all elections. that would stop this insane corruption.also, maybe we should rid ourselves of lawyers in high places because it is an equation for corruption and greed.

Hillary Clintons claims are ridiculous and misleading. I work in the healhcare industry and if I, not the hospital I work for, choose as a private citizen to donate to a campaign, it is misleading to claim that the hospital has made a donation. Her ad says in one breathe, that no candidate can accept money from corporations and then in the very next breathe says Obama has taken money from oil companies. Again, an employee of an oil company (which could range from janitoral/adminstrative assistant to president/CEO and everything in between) is not the same as the board of an oil company making a contribution using company funds. I think she is relying on the blue collar workers not to be able to make that distinction. I hope they can prove her wrong. She under estimated Obama and I hope the citizens of Penn. show her that she's underestimating their intelligence. Secondly, millions and millions of people donated money to Obamas campaign so that he could use it to WIN this nomination. If the Clinton campaign had the type of money the Obama campaign does, they would use it too. Because she can't manage her campaign money, her opponent should agree not to use his! Insane. Lastly, one great way her campaign could cut back cost is to quit paying Penn and Wolfson. They really have proven themselves to be just as incompetent as Senator Clinton herself. Wolfson, actually said that the candidate leading in delegates, states won and popular vote cannot afford to lose a state that he was behind in by over 20pts just a few weeks ago. Someone should tell them that even if Clinton does manage to trick these uneducated blue collar workers, SHE WILL STILL BE LOSING!
