Sen. Hillary Clinton wants President Bush to skip the Olympic Games' opening ceremonies in Beijing this summer to protest China's political crackdown in Tibet and China's failure to more actively pressure the Sudanese government over Darfur.
Bush has said recently he plans on atttending and now that Clinton of all people has called for him not to, that's likely to cement his resolve.
For her part, Clinton stops far short of calling for a complete U.S. boycott of the games, a la President Jimmy Carter in 1980 when he announced a complete American boycott games then to punish the Soviet Union for invading Afghanistan.
That was a public-relations disaster which ruined the event not just American athletes but sports fans and the media. Rooting for Canada just didn't cut it.
So there's little political appetite for a similar boycott of this summer's games. Clinton makes it clear in her statement that she's not going there:
Americans will also stand strong and root for the success of American athletes who have worked hard and earned the right to compete in the Olympic Games of 2008.
Here's her complete statement:
Statement by Hillary Clinton on Olympics
The violent clashes in Tibet and the failure of the Chinese government to use its full leverage with Sudan to stop the genocide in Darfur are opportunities for Presidential leadership. These events underscore why I believe the Bush administration has been wrong to downplay human rights in its policy towards China. At this time, and in light of recent events, I believe President Bush should not plan on attending the opening ceremonies in Beijing, absent major changes by the Chinese government.
I encourage the Chinese to take advantage of this moment as an opportunity to live up to universal human aspirations of respect for human rights and unity, ideals that the Olympic games have come to represent.
Americans will stand strong in support of freedom of religious and political expression and human rights. Americans will also stand strong and root for the success of American athletes who have worked hard and earned the right to compete in the Olympic Games of 2008.

We can't skip the opening ceremonies because we can't offend our master's.
Thanks to the Bush/McCain Republicans, China owns us...

today so far Sen Clinton is calling for an end to Breast Cancer, boycotting the Olympics -- and its noon
she is all over the place - and the lack oif focus is apparent
These are worthy topics but saying someone can do all these things only taxes Sen Clinton's credibility even more
Pander - even worthwhile pander - thy name is Hillary

Take that, Chuckman!

A metaphor for a failed presidency.

Well, how else will Dubya get over to China without paying for the trip himself?

Today the bloodiest, most oppressive nation on earth is the United States, without question.
If you're going to protest, protest against the people who've bombed millions to the grave in recent decades.

Senator Clinton, a Democrat, has it right, even if the present, inept administration doesn't. BOYCOTT THE OLYMPICS!! Even though, the Games are a shadow of their former selves, all they are now, are money makers and a propaganda machine. They don't promote athletics, nor honest competition, not with professional athletes allowed to compete! The only realistic and democratic response is to boycott these, supposed, games!! Once again, it took a Democrat to present the nation with an appropriate response to a very dismal development, China's Olympic charade!!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

Why would Bush skip the opening ceremonies?
The tactics the Chinese are using in Tibet are U.S. Government Approved!
Blackwater, who's employees shot 17 people dead in cold blood in December, just had it's contract renewed by the State department, which sees no problem with Blackwater's actions.
The Chinese are just following good Republican policy. I'm sure Bush will want to attend to tell Hu Jintao what a fantastic job he is doing, and to compliment him on his handling of the situation in Tibet. He'll probably give the Chinese some Blackwater brochures in case they need some extra help shooting innocent people down in the streets.

If Senator Clinton were president, rest assured that she would not skip the Olympic ceremonies over human rights issues.

Chuckman,
I hope that you will pay close attention to the picture that accompanied this story. THAT is the picture of oppression. THAT is what Fascism looks like. It goes way beyond any imaginary thing that Bush of Cheney may have ever done!
I don't think that you have this taking place in your impotent country and it sure the hell is not an America state of being. Look at the picture, read the caption, see if you can make some kind of connection. Shouldn't be that hard!

Yo Chuckman, maybe the U.S. should just bomb the hell out of Canada if we're so oppressive? And, if we are so oppressive and blood thirsty, then why do more people want to come IN to the U.S. than any other country and why do more countries look TO the U.S. when they need help?
But then why am I arguing with a blithering hater like Chuckman?
Then there is Lois:

Chuckman, if you hate the U.S. so much, then stay out of U.S. affairs, stop reading the Tribune and stop posting in the Swamp.
Louis, if you hate the U.S. so much, then leave! The quicker the better too!

Hey Chuckman, does Canada have new state-of-the-art white flags to surrender with.
You should remember that the security your cowardly nation enjoys today was bought and paid for by the blood of soldiers from the USA, what you call "the bloodiest, most oppressive nation on earth."
A simple "thank you" would have sufficed but we know you lack the class for that.
Say it again, Frank, "Rooting for Canada just didn't cut it."
p.s. Awfully big of Hillary to attack Bush on this. Wasn't she negotiating NAFTA and helping Bill to pass it while she was dodging sniper fire?

With the recent fuss of press photos I doubt the credibility of the photos. Personally I can't judge if the scene is in Tibet or just during training sessions in any town.

I'm not a fan of China, and yes, Bush allowed them to own us, however, Hillary was probably never an athlete. I hope the games are not politicized. Hillary does not get the meaning of the games and she seems to want to use the athletes as campaign pawns. She is creating some sort of 'I dare you thing' with Bush. Perhaps she should go to China/Tibet and march with a protest sign herself. The athletes have been preparing for years, and there is not a huge window of time to capitalize on optimal physical ability for most people. I 'll bet there are still athletes in the Olympics who ARE there for the games, who have been preparing for years, and who are pretty much purists for their sport. Having to wait another four years would hurt many athletes and their families who have sacrificed a lot so far. This seems like another sound bite for HRC that she will forget soon. For the athletes it is much more. They don't need extra anxiety from HRC's calls for anyone to skip the opening ceremonies. France is adding to the problem with their protests. Bush's snub could set off a chain of bad events. HRC should be calling for the best security for the athletes and their clean, noncontaminated food and water to be brought with them from the USA. Perhaps Blackwater will donate manpower to protect the US athletes in China since Bush just gave those mercenaries a new contract. I guess BW can kill with no legal repercussions. It prolly would not play the same in China as it played in Iraq.

When fascism comes to America, it will not be in brown and black shirts. It will not be with jack-boots. It will be Nike sneakers and Smiley shirts...Germany lost the Second World War. Fascism won it. Believe me, my friend.

Lois / George Carlin,
Your perspective of America is so chimerical in tone that I certainly can not argue with any of that.
What new tyranny does Cheney and Bush have planned for you today. How agonizing it must be for you to continue to live here day after day after day. We can only imagine. In the words of Bill Clinton, circa 1992, : ' I feel yo' pain'.
