Hillary Clinton: On what makes a delegate super

by Craig Gordon

It's a well-worn presidential campaign custom by now -- go on a late-night talk-show and joke about something bad happening in your campaign, to show you can laugh at yourself and try to convert the problem into a punch-line.

Clinton%20on%20Leno.jpg

So based on that formula, what did Hillary Clinton joke about on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night?

Sniper fire, of course.

According to the AP, Clinton told Leno she almost didn't make it to his studio. "It is so great to be here, I was so worried I wasn't going to make it. I was pinned down by sniper fire," Clinton said -- referring to her earlier claims that she had dodged sniper bullets once while flying into Bosnia as first lady. Clinton later had to admit she "misspoke" when video surfaced of a very un-sniper-fire sort of arrival ceremony on the tarmac that day.

"This has been such a mismatch of words and action," Clinton said. "Obviously I've been so privileged to represent our country in more than 80 other countries, lots of war zones. I wrote about it in my book and obviously had a lapse. But here I am, safe and sound."

Also included was a gentle Leno jab at Clinton's two 3 a.m. and the phone is ringing at the White House ads. "Answering the phone at 3:00, that's gotta be tough," he joked.

"It happens every single night. Someone calls up and they have something to say. You've got to stop calling me," Clinton told Leno. She also talked of her family, saying she's proud of her daughter, Chelsea, and tsk-tsking hubby Bill because "he does get a little carried away sometimes" on the campaign trail. Many Democrats would agree.

IF IN TROUBLE, GO ON JAY LENO, DAVID LETTERMAN, OR SNL. Thank goodness, most people have the same wisdom that I have and never watch these shows, or get wrapped up in TV culture. But Hillary has found, it seems, the way to gain absolution from her sins with wisecracking remarks. This all smooths over her lying and sleaziness and (gasp) makes her seem human at last. After a year campaigning she finally is human. Give me a break! This whole thing is a fairy tale.

Hillary is liar, void of ethics, and of dubious character. Ego is her life.

Jeez, of course, the first thing the first 2 posters do is attack Hillary. YOu never see this happening to men (unless it's Bartman).

I like her, and this country and this world are LONG overdue for some female leadership. If we had a female head of state, we wouldn't be throwing our children into war so hastily.

I give her credit for joking. Go Hillary!!!

Hillary was great! No one can deny that she is very smart and has the best plans for our country.

Hillary, please just SHUT UP!! Really, do we want four years of this inconsequential, overblown. lying, power-hungry bimbo in front of our TVs?

"It is so great to be here, I was so worried I wasn't going to make it. I was pinned down by sniper fire," Clinton said.

Yeah, real funny. While our guys and gals are ACTUALLY pinned down by radical maniacs in the mid-East. Real funny you worthless...

Its really hard to decide who to hate more I'll Say Anything Bambi or Hillary We've Offed our Own People that Shows You our Morals

Don't people find it funny that every man bashes Hillary and every woman loves her? As a male I do not like Hillary but that has nothing to do with her being a woman - then again I don't think Obama or McCain are right for the job either. Just make sure that you listen to the debates and base your decision on fact not party/gender/race association otherwise we still have a long ways to go. Remember: there aren't stupid candidates just stupid voters.

Six months ago the quirky-funny-bawdy Hillary shtick would have been endearing and entertaining. Now, somehow, it's not.

Hillary is . . .

I think I get what has happened here. It's called mob mentality. A group of people can get so worked up that they toss reason and sanity out the window. Their rage takes over and their inner neanderthal comes out. Jack here had nothing to add to the article. He just saw a chance to demean Hillary and he took it.
Hillary has done nothing to deserve this. She has tried to better America and help those who need it. When your greatest crime is trying to secure health care for the uninsured, then I have to question the humanity of her accusers.
There is no longer any discussion of the issues. It's all "she's ambitious", "it's her ego", "she'll do anything". And since her rival is an African-American, then "she's a racist".
Even though she and Bill were completely exonerated of every wildass accusation made by the GOP, their haters keep bringing them up. I don't recall any major media outlet calling the GOP on their lying accusations and their 60 million dollar impeachment charade.
Things were good in the 90's., and yes, Hillary played a big role. Bigger than Obama. Bigger than McCain. Not as big as the Big Dog himself, but hey, he comes with Hillary, something Barack and John can't claim. And if you don't like that, then I guess you don't like peace and prosperity.

Well, this convinces me that when Hillary finally decides to drop out of the primaries to avoid causing a disaster for the Democrats, she can become a comedienne.

She's had a lot of past practice trying to make light of her sleazy husband's activities.

The woman is simply remarkable. Apparently she is a clairvoyant (having foreseen the campaign going down to the last primaries, now claiming that she's been speaking out on the economy for a while), a hero under fire (both in Bosnia and on the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum), and now has a gift for comedy.

Gee, I just wonder on the clairvoyant thing, how it is she didn't foresee the godforsaken horror her vote would create for Iraq. Perhaps the clairvoyance comes and goes like good radio reception?

Ellen and Marie, HRC is not the woman to hold the torch for women of power. I know MANY powerful women that are voting for Obama and disgraced by Hillary.

This is not a race between women and men, there is clearly one pathalogical liar, and one that lies a whole lot less. There is one candidate that represents "old style politics" and one that does not. I'll be real honest with you, I only know of one lady friend of mine that voted for HRC.....she happens to be the least educated lady friend I have.

So we're supposed to prefer another 4 years of an inconsequential, overblown, lying, power-hungry boy instead? Dem and Rep! (men never really grow up, do they ladies.)

Jeez, of course, the first thing the first 2 posters do is attack Hillary. YOu never see this happening to men (unless it's Bartman).

Posted by: marie s. | April 4, 2008 9:04 AM

Are you kidding, Marie? Why don't you go over into first available thread about Barack Obama and tell me there's not attacking going on in there.

I agree that the attackes on Hillary (all candidates) are a bit ridiculous... but don't give me this "damsel in distress" crap. They're ALL going to get attacked... fairly, unfairly... all ways. The subject matter is too important and there are WAY too many political zealots out there.

Hillary was great! No one can deny that she is very smart and has the best plans for our country.

Posted by: Ellen | April 4, 2008 9:05 AM

I can deny she has the best plans for our country.

That phone call at 3 AM was to let her campaign know they need to pay their bills.

FINAL NOTICE PRIOR TO DISCONNECTION.

Is her joking about her lies supposed to make it all better. Seeing her as just a "jokester" with just a crazy sense of humor? Oh what fun!!!!

This woman has more balls than any man that I know. No wonder bill chases skirts.

Ah, thank goodness for consistency. The sun rises and sets each day...and the throngs of misogynists bash Senator Clinton. I guess they must have mother issues or perhaps the male ones just like to verbally or physically abuse their wives. And the female Hillary bashers, I guess they're afraid they will be verbally or physically abused by their husbands or boyfriends by showing any support of Senator Clinton. And if you're particularly religious, well the bible explains it all: a woman is meant to serve her man. Apparently, Hillary is just an annoying woman who should be baking cookies, speak when spoken to, and let a man run the country. Sad..

Maire,

"
Throwing our children into war so hastily" ? Hillary voted to go to war. Female leadership? How are her lies less pernicious than her husband's or some other male poitician?
I find it strange that you take comfort in the fact that a liar can joke about her propensity for mendacity.

To John D. No, you are right I don't want this iniconsequential, overblown, lying (Wright), power-hungry fake in front of our TV's or in the White House, that is exactly why I am "not" voting for obama. GO HILLARY YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY GREAT!

TO Anonymous - sorry you are dead wrong on the comment that "every woman supports hillary" I can find very few that do. I am a 57 yo, college educated, female & supposedly in her sights as a supporter -NOT.

She doesn't deserve the support of any woman & those that do support her must be missing something upstairs (like a functioning brain maybe!)

"a mismatch of words and action" rather than a lie!

That's even better than hubby Bill defining "oral sex as "not sex".

Please Clinton "family", just GO AWAY!!

When a candidate is force to try and joke away a glaring series of lies, it's the candidacy that is the real the joke.

It's time to tell Senator Clinton that enough is enough. Do it here:

http://www.dropouthillary.org/

Xcennentform. I'm sure your x-friend will be happy to hear you just called her a dummy in print no less. With friends like you who needs enemys? Hillary has what it takes to be the next president, but you and your educated friends are too dumb to see that, because you are too busy patting yourselves on the back as to how really intelligent you think you are. People who are really "intelligent" don't have to keep proclaiming their intelligence. HILLARY THE BEST CHOICE FOR ALL WOMAN, MEN AND CHILDREN (HEALTHCARE) 08-12 SHE WILL BRING OUR COUNTRY BACK TO WHAT IT SHOULD BE.

If Hillary is so smart, why did she fail the Washington, D.C. bar exam? And why won't she release her college grades? And why does she have to be such a persistent lier? And why did she not know about Bill's philandering when it was right under her nose? And why did she not even remember the time of day before the Grand Jury? Oh, she's smart, all right. Duck and cover.

CNN just ran a poll two nights ago that suggests most that 76% of Americans think the country is ready for a black president, but only 63% feel the country is ready for a woman president. Based on the posts above, it is obvious that this country is deeply misogynistic. If you can't handle voting for a woman (and that includes many women, by the way), then don't vote for Hillary. But you don't need to demonize her just to cover up your contempt for all things female.

Why is it that the people who support Obama have to be so nasty? If you read the comments, the people supporting Hillary can state their opinion without bashing Obama. Go to Mad Money with Jim Cramer and listen to her. Her grasp of the situation we are in is outstanding. Unless you are afraid that you might be wrong

This attack coming from someone who can't even spell "liar." I bet you didn't even graduate high school.

crafty b, so you think insuring half the population that are currently uninsured is the best plan? Everything else obama has stated he has taken from Hillary, so anything good that comes out of his mouth really was her plans first. Just listen to the debates he sounds like a parrot.

Why did Hillary cross the road?

Word has that John D is actually a secret operative for Hillary's campaign.

The strategy in planting him was to make the Right look absolutely stone dumb.

I think he has been quite successful.

It's a shame that Obama "supprters" are so busy bashing Hillary Clinton that they can't see the wood for the trees. Hillary has managed to campaign and come up with plans for the economy, healthcare, keeping jobs in the US and on and on and on! Because he's been busy on the campaign trail Obama can't even call one meeting of his committee to discuss Afghanistan - a supposed major concern of his - he was supposedly angered about the war in Iraq taking away from the real war in Afghanistan! Throw away the kool-aid and drink some coffee - it might help you wake up and see that Obama is not all he's been pumped up to be by the msm and that Hillary is far superior to what you may think she is.

Sorry, Hillary, Joking about your lies doesn't show that they are inconsequential. Making light of them won't change them from being a serious reason to doubt that you will be truthful to the American people if you somehow win the presidency. We don't need four more years of that. She that gets elected by the lie will rule by the lie.

So, the most important question is, who will be McCain's running mate?

I agree that it is unfortunate that the first woman candidate for president is Hillary Clinton. Hillary is a lightweight; mediocre at best, who rides on the coat tails of her husband and her ego.

I would much rather have a woman who has earned this honor to run and who is a real leader we can all support.

In spite of his flaws (and we all have them), no one can deny that Obama is a leader who inspires.

Agree with John D comment "Hillary, please just SHUT UP!! Really, do we want four years of this inconsequential, overblown. lying, power-hungry bimbo in front of our TVs?"

I have no problem with a women president as long as she has some class. Hillary has none compared to Nancy Pelosi......

Last debate I saw, Hillary did not know that denounce and reject meant the same thing. Wasn't she also booed at?after making her "xerox" joke. If anything the debates have shown how calm and poised Obama conducts himself under distress. I can not believe she was two months behind on her insurance bill for the campaign employees. Ironic. She can't run a campaign and she wants to run the country?

I'm not sure it was politically astute of Hillary to remind us that she lied about running at the airport under sniper fire.

I thought this chick was "experienced." Or maybe I just misunderstood what she meant by "experienced."

Of course, somebody in Hillary's campaign wrote the jokes for her. It's pretty funny though. But do I like her any better? No. Will I vote for her? Still no.

WE LOVE YOU HILARRY! AMERICA NEEDS YOU TO BE ARE PRESIDENT! HILARRY WILL SAVE AMERICA!

HILARRY 08!

Why do we even read these comments? It is very obvious that a percentage of them are written by professional hacks who are paid to spin every article. These writers are obviously campaign staff from at least 3 campaigns. I cannot trust any of these responses to be genuine.

No mirrors in groucho's house.

Well whaddya know, it's getting better. I actually had Leno on last night during dinner and I didn't even NOTICE that cackling hag. Frankly the thought of having to listen to that nerve grating prattle of hers for FOUR LONG YEARS (because face it, even if by some miracle she DID get into the White house, after four years of what she'd put this country through she'd promptly be voted out of office) was enough to make beads of cold sweat break out on my forehead. And I can understand Leno rooting for her too. Because NOTHING could be better for the comedy business than ANOTHER Clinton stint in the White house. There'd be Lesbian jokes (probably pretty insensitive and DEFINITELY poor taste), there'd be tall tale jokes (Cuz face it, Hilly tells some WHOPPERS), and there would be enough sleaze and scandal to make the fortunes of probably every comedian in the country (Hilly really IS laughable). But for regular Joe and Joan Public average working class American it wouldn't be a joke at all. it would be joblessness, homelessness, and hopelessness. And I for one intend to Keep my daughters home (The home she was RAISED in). So at this moment the only thing I'm waiting for is to see who IS going to get my vote Barack Obama or John McCain.

Sniper fire? Ha, what a knee slapper! I'm sure our vets who have actually been under sniper fire find her "joke" to be just so, so funny. Hillary needs to go crawl back under whatever rock she crawled out from.

If you thought Bosnia was dangerous,
don't get caught between a politician and a camera.

Clinton's fond but bogus recollections about sniper fire and running for cover in a war zone dishonor our soldiers. Joking about these lies makes her look even worse.

Do we want a Commander-in-Chief who makes light of such things in order to keep her fading campaign alive?

I don't think we do!

As the truth unfolds...

Obama aide admits that 80k troops may have to stay in Iraq. Say something now Obamacons!!!!

Obama supporters are pretty darn scary. So defensive, and he's nothing but an Idealist. I can say "the world will be better if you elect me", but that doesn't mean I can make it happen. Wake up, people! What he's promising is VERY unrealistic. And you're calling Clinton a liar....

think about it in terms of relevance

politicians lie - that doesn't make it right - any thinking person knows hillary did not mis-speak - hillary lied - why ?she lied purely in order to appear better able to be commander in chief than obama - WHAT 'S REALLY IMPORTANT IS; in so doing she showed her ususal lack of character but more so she showed total ineptitiude about all matters military - she would not have even tried to use this lie in her campaign against obama had she known there was zero chance a military plane would land with civilian or military v.i.p.'s in an area that had not been fully secured (did hillary fail Military Operations 101 ?)- hillary would still be using that exact same lie over and over and over against obama had it not been for the video (just like billary would have told his lie over and over and over - even if monica went to jail for perjury or worse - he would have never, ever told the truth but for for the dna on the blue dress)

those lies came directly from the mouth of hillary - repeat - directly

the wright remarks did not come from obama at all - the clintons are playing guilt by association and the race card at the same time - it is disgusting - the wright matter is truly a non issue other than it underscores the lack of ethics on the part of the clintons - but that is hardly a surprise

Hillary-

Why are you laughing at your lies? You should come out to the American people and apologize for fabricating your stories. I definitely don't want someone in office that gets caught up, and than goes on a late night show and jokes about her lies. Can you only imangine what she will do if she is in office? She is an evil person, with a personality of a witch. GO Obama, GO.

She doesn't deserve the support of any woman & those that do support her must be missing something upstairs (like a functioning brain maybe!)

Posted by: kathy | April 4, 2008 10:16 AM

Hey Kathy, are you saying that all the thousands of women who voted for her in the primarys do not have a functioning brain? Is it because a lot of them don't have a college education? Shame on you that you should hate your own sex so much.

Jay Leno asked HRC some very good questions. HRC's answers showed me that she thinks Jay and most Americans are pretty dumb. I see this in McBush, too. God help us when we all go to vote this Nov.--and we have to hold our noses and put on high waders. Will someone else PLEASE run for president?????!!!!!!!!!!! Forget a Repug and four more years of Bush. Another Dem PLEASE--to operate the earth movers to plow away the Cheney/Bush landslide of mass wasting, death, recession and lies--too many untruths. Too much underhandedness. I don't have the stomach for any more. Never did.

The argument that if you don't vote for Hillary and/or you don't like her you are sexist or a misogynist is ridiculous. I don't like George Bush, John Kerry, or Howard Dean--under the "if you don't like Hillary, you're sexist" logic, what could be the possible reason for disliking three white men? It's equally ridiculous that if you don't vote for Obama and/or you don't like him (full disclosure: he has my vote and I do like him), you are a racist. I'm a Democrat that doesn't like Condoleezza Rice. Does that make me a racist?

Yes, there are sexists and racists out there who don't like Hillary or Obama for very wrong reasons, but there are far, far more people who don't like them for legitimate ones.

If you don't like Hillary's kitchen sink, win-at-all-costs-even-if-means-the-Democrats-don't-gain-the-White-House strategy, are you sexist ("you can't take a woman being strong")? The same behavior would offend me if it were coming from a man. On the flip-side, if folks think Obama is arrogant, does that make them a racist ("you equate an African-American being smart with being arrogant")? What I see as reassuring confidence some may see as arrogance--for the majority of them, I don't think that's about the color of Obama's skin.

Yes, we have to be cognizant of racism and sexism out there, but we can't assume that supporting (or not supporting) one candidate or the other is always a product of either.

The Bubba - how wrong you are. I don't hate my own sex @ all. I would like to see the most qualified person in as POTUS regardless of race, gender, or creed. Not a person simply because she is a woman & most definetly NOT hill. She is the last person that women need representing them in the highest office of this country. Especially one who engages in bald-faced lies & then has the balls to go on Leno & joke about it. Any woman who votes for her simply because she is a woman needs to have her head examined.

So Kathy, then you would equally agree that every black person who has voted for Obama because he's black should also "have his head examined"?

Just for consistency dear.

One must laugh to keep from crying. And KATHY, there's no shame in making an educated decision rather than a sexist decision. Meaning "Oh she's a woman so I have to vote for her. Let me just say in response to The Bubba who has no brain power, yes KATHY is hating on her on sex those that fall in the category of dummy's like yourself. It's the 21st Century and we are still acting like we're in high school during the 60's where the girls migrate to one side of the dance hall and the boys migrate to the other.... COME ON PEOPLE OR (THE BUBBA) GROW UP!
GO OBAMA '08 - We are sweeping the nation like never before

Also Spector, JUST FOR CONSISTENCY SAKE
Yes if a black person is voting for Obama because he is black then they need their head examined because they obviously haven't followed the election thus far oer they would have used one of the many reasons listed below! This should give Blacks as well as Whites all they need to make an educated decision and vote for Obama.

CLINTON v. OBAMA on LEGISLATIVE EXPERIENCE:

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term (6yrs.), and another year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law, (20) twenty pieces of legislation in her first six years including the following:

1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
6. Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.

These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress (www.thomas.loc.gov).

Now, I would post those of Obama's, but the list is too substantive, so I'll mainly categorize.

During the first (8) eight months of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced

233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.

His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included the following:

**the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 (became law),
**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, (became law),
**The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
**The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, (became law),
**The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, (In committee), and many more.

In all since he entered the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record.

Rock on Mandy and Kathy!! You ladies remind me of the educated lady friends that I have. And Just for RFB's sake, education does not require a degree, just some cells that fire consistantly. I love how you twisted my comment around to make a negative out of it and construe things that I did not infer. Seems to be the trate of a Hillary supporter.

Hillary was great! No one can deny that she is very smart and has the best plans for our country.

Posted by: Ellen | April 4, 2008 9:05 AM

Ummmm...Sorry, Ellen. Count me in as a strong denial! Unless you mean the flimsiest plans....most self-serving plans? Least ethical plans?

OBAMA with his pastor problem never said he is wrong, Hillary admits she made a mistake and all that people who feel their selfs like God don't accept Hillary is human, obama supporters must be perfect, they never made a mistake in their life, but they ignore the racist pastor, obama lied about his father, obama does not have experience and if you really care of USA do not vote for obama and this is not racism with all respect to everybody I don't feel guilty to say I am sorry but this black candidate is not ready to be our president, I am looking at him just like a bad candidate. Hillary is my option, GO HILLARY
