Clinton's disputed slam at South: The Swamp

The Swamp

The Clinton campaign maintains that people who recall Hillary Clinton making a pointedly derisive remark about Southern voters many years ago are not remembering it right.

The question was stirred by a column in The Huffington Post this week, in which Sam Stein wrote about an account of that comment published a few years back by an author:

"In January 1995, as the Clintons were licking their wounds from the 1994 congressional elections, a debate emerged at a retreat at Camp David. Should the administration make overtures to working class white Southerners who had all but forsaken the Democratic Party?'' Stein wrote. "The then-first lady took a less than inclusive approach.

"Screw 'em," she told her husband. "You don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don't have to do anything for them."

"The statement -- which author Benjamin Barber witnessed and wrote about in his book, The Truth of Power: Intellectual Affairs in the Clinton White House -- was prompted by another speaker raising the difficulties of reaching "Reagan Democrats','' Stein wrote. It stands in stark contrast to the attitude the New York Democrat has recently taken on the campaign trail, in which she has presented herself as the one candidate who understands the working-class needs.''

“I think this quote that has gotten some attention… differs from the recollection of other people who were in the room,'' Phil Singer, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign, said this morning on a conference call with reporters. Others who were there "not only don’t remember the comment being made, but also don’t reflect a meeting… reflecting the kind of tone and tenor that is implied….

"If you look at the way that Sen. Clinton has lived her life, the kind of policies she has pursued,'' the spokesman said, "I think it is quite clear that she has advocated a progressive agenda aimed at lifting all Americans up… not just those in one region.’’

So, are they saying that the author, a noted political scientist, got the story wrong? Are they saying the author is wrong? "I’m not going to get into an argument with him or anyone else whose recollection may be different,'' Singer said. "We’ve given our answer on this.’’

While this is exactly what Obama was talking about in the debate last night -- petty media spin of quotes taken out of context -- why can I imagine Hillary saying essentially the same thing about the states she's lost in the primaries? Small states, caucus states, red states -- screw 'em?

"Screw 'em," she told her husband. "You don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don't have to do anything for them."

I still don't believe these are the issues that matter. Anyones comments can be spun to suit ones needs, but there are more important issues at hand and wish we could deal with them instead of this type of politics.

Oh, hell's bells I HOPE she did say it, because the reality ON THE GROUND
(politics is NOT blogging and instant messaging blogging points to run em at the media like it's a t-shirt gun)
back when BILL AND HILL TOOK BACK THE WHITE FROM THE REAGAN/BUSHES they needed to say to hell with the South.
And there were more bubbas then.
But not enough have died. NOt yet. And Obama has GOT TO KNOW the Repugs are crossing over and voting him up.
But he doesn't care.
He'll trash our chances for the Fall.
In the meantime, if the next years of actuarial statistics are right about the 3rd generation LBJ lost by signing the civil rights act---then things will be okay for him to run in 2016.
But now's not the time for Obama. Right now, he's just a spoiler.

Give Senator Clinton a break. Can't we say flippant things from time to time and not have them be taken for our last will and testament. I know we have all done this, so, let's lighten up a bit! It is the issues, such as, what has happened to our economy, under Republican stewardship?!!! It's in the toilet and we are going to reelect these Incompetents, again. Wake up, America, before it is really too late!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

You got that backwards. The crossovers are legitimate disgruntled "Repugs". Hillary won the primary vote in Texas and Ohio because of non-legit crossovers. Hillary Can't win.
