A group of social conservatives launched an advertising campaign today warning Sen. John McCain not to chose Mitt Romney as his running mate.

The advertisements, which are set to run in 20 newspapers in areas where McCain will be campaigning in the coming weeks, were paid for by the Government is Not God-PAC. Among those behind the ad, which is displayed as an open letter to McCain, is Paul Weyrich, co-founder of the Moral Majority. Another singer of the advertisement is Stephen Strang, a prominent Evangelical publisher who was an early supporter of Gov. Mike Huckabee's run for the Republican nomination.

"If Governor Romney is on your ticket, many social conservative voters will consider their values repudiated by the Republican Party and will either stay away from the polls this November or only vote down ticket. For the sake of your election, the health of your party, and the future of America you must not allow the obvious electoral consequences of that to occur," reads the text of the ad addressed to McCain.

Weyrich previously supported Romney, who as governor of Massachusetts was a supporter of abortion rights and was an advocate of gay rights. Romney changed his views on both issues before announcing his presidential ambitions. Weyrich later said he regretted supporting Romney.

McCain and Romney were fierce competitors before Romney withdrew from his race for the White House following a poor showing in the Super Tuesday contests in February. More recently, Romney and McCain appeared together on the campaign trail, and Romney even said he would be happy to serve as McCain's running mate.

The full page ran today for the first time in the Daily Courier of Prescott, Ariz., where McCain is campaigning.

There are plenty of good reasons to not pick Mitt Romney as your running mate, but religious intolerance isn't one of them. I'm in the uncomfortable position of having to choose sides between two people I despise on this one: Romney and Weyrich. Although given the choice and the anti-mormon message I think it's an easy one. I'll take Romney almost any day over Weyrich.

This is a moot, anyway, as McCain can't stand Romney and won't pick him as his VP.

The Trib writes: "Romney, who as governor of Massachusetts was a supporter of abortion rights and was an advocate of gay rights...changed his views on both issues before announcing his presidential ambitions."

Certainly true that Romney promoted abortion on demand and the homosexual agenda before posturing to run for prez.

But please note that the "No Mitt" ad addresses examples of Romney advancing the abortion and homosexual agenda AFTER his alleged "change (of) views" on both issues.

I'd love to see John W McBush pick flip-flopper Mitt as his running-mate on the losing Repub ticket, they're would be even more laughs than there already is with them running the nearly 100 year old, out of touch with reality, Grandpa McCain.

BwaHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I represent a conservative group as well and Romney heads the list. We must have either him or another Reagan Conservative - Not Huckabee! If not we will defect.

Don't be misled by raw numbers. If you check out the petition nearly half the names on there are actually SUPPORTING Romney for VP. This includes me. The petition has a section for how you would vote if Romney is on the ticket and also a comment section. Point is that a listing of names is meaningless unless the additional info on the petition is included. For the record, many of us can not stand Huckabee any more than we can McCain. Romney is the only hope to make the ticket acceptable.

If you look at the petition it will be misleading because they are taking out all positive comments for Romney. Before they did this I would say the majority of comments were FOR Romney not against. I still don't understand while you would make a petition against someone instead of promoting the candidate you do want. Seems a little fishy to me as far as their motivations are concerned. Maybe those Huckabee supporters still think it is their mission to keep a Mormon out of the White House. How sad that our country still has to deal with people like this. Freedom of religion is the principle our country was founded on. Anyway, just know that I emailed the people behind the petition and they admitted to removing pro-Romney comments even though the petition lets you mark if you would vote for Romney, but, if you check it they delete you.

There are many reasons to support Mitt Romney as VP (just ask Pres. Bush, Jeb Bush, Karl Rove, etc.). There may be many other fine VP potentials, also, but Huckabee simply isn't one of them. These social conservatives need to cough up some serious fundraising money for cash-strapped McCain if they want some leverage, something they haven't/can't do.

Full page ads? Couldn't they just send him a letter? Nice way to waste money.

Hey, It's the economy stupid. Support Romney for VP or be prepared for Obama for Pres. McCain's only hope is to counter, where he himself admitted that he is weak, which is on the economy. So Huckabee or some other conservative is named as VP, at that point the race is over. Everyone knows on the Republican and Democratic side there is one man that brings proven experience to economical challenging times and that is Romney. So support Romney for VP or it will be Obama for President..

I wonder if the Mormons have created a anti-Huckabee petition? I seriously doubt that they have. I wonder if that means the Mormon Jesus is a better Jesus -- and the Huckabee Jesus is petty and shallow....

Jeff,

How blind can you be? You say you don't like Romney yet you believe the slander that the primary reason some Christian folks don't like Romney is because is a Mormon. It is because he is still supports "gay rights" (he told Roland Martin of CNN that on the night of the South Carolina primary) and is not credible on a host of other issues. He also started socialized medicine in Massachusetts.

I can't believe Weyrich drank the Jan Folger koolaid.

All we need on the GOP ticket is a corrupt has-been like Huckabee who has based a campaign on bigotry, given a well-received speech to the nation's largest white supremacy group - the Council of Conservative Citizens - and freed a rapist from jail who went on to commit murder.

If McCain picks Mitt "I'll flip flop on any issue" Romney, as fas as I, and many like me are concerned, he's on his own!

For once I agree with absolutely everything Jeff said in the opening post.

I'm still dreaming about a McCain/ Rice ticket. Why not combine the single most inept (and that is a breathtaking distinction) existing appointee of the Bush Administration with a man who promises Bush Squared policies of "pre-emptive" war, endless occupation, and perpetuation of the extreme economic laissez-faire that has contributed to the impending recession.

Might I propose McCain/ Lieberman, a completion of Mr. Lieberman's conversion to a jingoistic Zionist uber-hawk, a historic crossover as a former Democrat runs on the Republican ticket, and perhaps brings a Jew within a heartbeat of the presidency?

But seriously Jeff, whose your guy gonna nominate?

A petition has been created in support of Mitt Romney as the best choice for vice-president. The URL is:

www.yesmittvp.com

This petition was created in response to a widely publicized online petition against Mitt Romney. Incidentally, until a few hours ago, the majority of the comments on the "nomittvp" site were IN FAVOR of Romney! Consequently, the group in charge of the anti-Romney petition stopped displaying all comments (only signatures now) and posted an advisory saying:

"This is not a blog site. This is a petition AGAINST Mitt Romney being on the GOP ticket with John McCain. Because of some vulgar comments made by Romney supporters toward individuals, the decision was made to remove ALL comments by Romney supporters. If you support Romney you should not be signing a petition against him in order to make pro--Romney statements. That is flat out dishonest."

Dishonest to voice your opinion? Furthermore, I was watching the anti-petition regularly, and the claim about vulgar comments by Romney supporters is a HUGE LIE!

Just remember that most of the signatures on the anti-Romney petition are IN FAVOR of Romney.

Mike Huckabee and his friends continue to do whatever they can to keep the Mormon out of the Whitehouse. It makes no difference that Romney is the only candidate out there with any economic sense. David from Iowa - check Romney's record - he fought for the sancity of marriage! His program in MA is NOT socialized medicine - it is one of personal responsibility. It forces those who can pay for health insurance pay for it and it subsidizes those who can't. Check your facts. Mr. Huckabee isn't smart enough or strong enough in any other area in the country than the Bible belt to help McCain! I don't think he cares about this country half as much as he cares about his own agenda. He has a lot of things to answer for and religious bigotry is in the top five!

Mitt Romney is LDS through and through. Just do a little Google research on Marion G. Romney and check out http://lds-mormon.com/racism.shtml

In the news we are watching what is going on in Texas with the Federal Government raiding the FLDS compound. What most Americans don't know is that the members of the FLDS church are the true followers of Joseph Smith and comform to his teachings. The LDS Church is just bigger and has more influence and power. I just love the way the LDS Church says it has nothing to do with the FLDS Church yet they are both followers of Joseph Smith. Kinda like saying Baptist's are not Christian.

I am sick and tired of the shallow and totally one sided comment "Flip Flopper" who in politics has not changed their positions, if you look deeper in what Romney has stated and stood for you would see that there was no flip flop none more than any other politican. Look at Mccain, agianst the Bush tax cuts, now for them, against protecting the border now he is for it.......... just admit it you dont like Romney and that's up to you , but quit the whinning about flip flopping that is such an elementary school distortion of the facts and such a petty claim.......why not just come out and say, the guys too clean cut for you and you can't stand someone you can't sling dirt at. if you could you would dug up dirt on the guy but you know what he is squeeky clean you some people just cant stand it.

I signed the petition in support of Mitt and submitted comments. Of course the petition only lists my name as if I support this (how deceitful!). This petition is nothing more than a bigotted anti-Mormon rant!!! I would support a McCain / Romney ticket. I could not support a McCain / Huckabee ticket. We don't need a bigot next in line to the Presidency!!!

Mitt Romney is hands down the wisest and best choice that John McCain should make for V.P. I feel that the anti-Mitt movement is largely based on bigotry against his religion. Here is an excellent article on why Mitt should be V.P.

Mitt Romney will balance out McCain's admitted weakness on the economy.
I see no difference between jew hating Farrakahn
catholic hating Haggee and Mormon hating Huckabee. Of all the bigots, liars and deceivers....Huckabee is the worst. And now his plan is backfiring on him as his name is not a consideration for VP....so he has to go after the man who is the best choice.

Here is how Government Not God deals with people who disagree with them.

It takes someone who is a two faced liar to sign a petition to McCain saying he DOES NOT WANT ROMNEY AS VP in order to attack those who placed the petition. YOU SIGNED A PETITITON SAYING YOU DO NOT WANT ROMNEY. Are you too stupid to understand that? This was not a blog site. YOU SIGNED THE PETITON, you idiot! If you want this self proclaimed opportunist as your president then go buy an ad in the newspaper like we did and set up a web site. Stop your dishonesty. This is not about discourse; this is about you being a cheap, dishonest two faced disgusting space thief like just like Mitt Romney.

Nice folks, huh?

To Publius1787 It is you with the hateful tone and name calling. We see right through your bigoted tactics. The format of the petition is very deceitful. It reads like a poll and the reason the comments got taken out is because so many of them were very powerful advocates of Mitt Romney. You who designed the petition are the ones doing the deceiving and underhanded tactics if anyone is.

There will always be extremist splinter groups from any religion. Saying the FLDS is anything like the LDS church is just ignorant.

I just created a new online poll Mitt Romney will make the best V.P. Go here and scroll down to bottom of page to vote. Thank You.

The Mormons are a large, pivotal voting block in eleven western states. They have already seen Mitt Romney "thrown under the bus" once largley because of his LDS faith. If they see him thrown under the bus a second time they will vote third-party or stay home. The Republican Party has always been able to depend on the "Mormon" vote since 1976. If the Latter-day Saints now see the Republicans as the anti-Mormon party, It will be good-bye Republicans, hello, Democrats. The Republicans will lose the Presidency as well as the Senate and House. It will guarantee Democratic hegemony for years to come. It is time, that the so-called Christians practice the same tolerance that they want extended to them.

People might also want to look at www.unitethegop.com a political action group dedicated to getting Mitt Romney on the McCain ticket.

The business-savvy Mitt Romney would perhaps complement the economics-disadvantaged John MacCain.

But look at the disgrace that has befallen Barak Orama for his religious associations. The same would surely happen to Romney when the news media picks up on the racist and sexist doctrines of the Mormon Church.

As narrated in the Book of Mormon, the good guys, the Nephites, were a fair-skinned people, whereas the bad guys, the Lamanites, being descendants of Cain, were punished by God with a dark skin. (Nephi 5:21, Alma 3:6) According to the Mormon prophet and leader Brigham Young, the “flat nose and black skin” of African Americans were likewise the stigma of Cain. It wasn’t until 1978 that an African American was accepted into the Church priesthood. Then there’s the Church’s history of polygamy and sexism, still much part of the Later Day Saint culture, as evident by the latest news from Texas.

Mitt Romney would be a hard sell to most Americans.

The only one in the radar that as his running mate could assure McCain a victory in November is Condoleezza Rice.
