A bitter Sir Elton John thinks America's sexism may be sinking his friend Hillary Rodham Clinton.
John, a knighted British subject, said that gender discrimination is behind Clinton's problems in the polls as he addressed 5,000 Clinton supporters at Radio City Musical Hall last night in an event that raised $2.5 million for the cash-strapped campaign.
"I never cease to be amazed by the misogynistic attitudes of some people in this country," said John, wearing a spangled black evening coat over a vermilion silk shirt. "I say to hell with them. ... I love you, Hillary, I'll always be there for you."
John's comments echo the former first lady's remarks to National Public Radio Tuesday, when she said there was "a double standard" in media coverage of the race.
Read more below, and see a Newsday photo gallery here.
Minutes before Elton John took the stage, Bill Clinton struck an equally defiant tone, chiding TV commentators who are counting out his wife because she trails Barack Obama in delegates and the popular vote.
"You did not come here in vain," he said, flanked by his wife and daughter, Chelsea. "She can win the nomination and if she wins the nomination, she'll win the general election."
Clinton's campaign raised about $20 million in March -- about half of Obama's monthly haul. Supporters, who snaked around the historic theater for hours before the event, paid between $125 and $2,300 to hear the singer-songwriter perform hits like "Rocket Man" and "Your Song."
John, who appeared somber, also railed against Ronald Reagan for his slow response to the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. In October, Elvis Costello -- another Brit -- headlined Clinton's 60th birthday fundraiser at Manhattan's Beacon Theater.
Clinton spent the first part of her day in Pennsylvania, reiterating her opposition to the Colombia free trade agreement after the revelation that her husband backs the pact -- and was paid $800,000 by free trade advocates to give speeches in the country.
"I have a long record of being on a different attitude toward trade than my husband does," Clinton told reporters in Aliquippa, in one of the rare instances of public disagreement between the couple. "I don't think any married couple I know agrees on everything, and we disagree on this."
Free trade is a critical issue in Pennsylvania, a state that has seen many of its manufacturing jobs migrate overseas since the 1970s. Clinton says she raised concerns about the North American Free Trade Agreement passed by her husband despite publicly supporting the increasingly unpopular pact.
"The Colombia free trade deal, in my view, is not appropriate because of the history of suppression and targeted killings of labor organizers in Colombia," she added. "There is an argument that there has been some improvement and change by the Colombian government, but it is not enough for me."
The former president, appearing at a Manhattan steakhouse before the fundraiser celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Northern Irish peace accord, refused to answer reporters' questions about the topic.
"I'm here for the Irish," said Clinton, when asked about his position on the deal. His face reddened when a journalist asked if he regretted taking the money in Colombia.
"Nice try," he said, walking away.

Sexism does NOT hurt Hillary Clinton. Being Hillary Clinton hurts her. She is not honest, not very likable, will do anything to get elected, is a divisive force, does not have much experience, and frankly, is a mediocre candidate who would not have made it this far without her husband, and the fact that she IS a woman.

Being female doesn't hurt Hillary Clinton's campaign. However being a disingenuous, two faced/bald faced liar, with a history of scams, swindles, scandals, and perjury's DOES! She should be the poster girl for white collar crime. And the ONLY thing that has kept them from being put behind bars is Bill's shrewd defensive use of executive power while he was in the white house.
He pardoned imprisoned cronies and insiders who could have ratted him out had they felt they had nothing to lose and maybe something to gain.
Others who knew too much had really 'Unfortunate accidents" (Ala Ron Brown, whose plane was more than two miles off course in Bosnia due to "Misplaced" beacons) or committed suicide like Vince Foster (yeah gunshot wound BEHIND the left ear). You know, that's an awful lot of suicides.
In fact nearly 40 people in all, from the time Clinton was Governor of Arkansas. One things for sure though, Knowing too much about the Clinton's could be hazardous to your health. So "Sir" Elton might wanna be careful not to get TOO CHUMMY with them.

I think he got it wrong: misogyny, mainly from other women, is what did in Amy Jacobsen, not Hillary.
That and people are tired of the same old hate and venom that has pervaded American politics for the past 16 years.

As soon as Elton John becomes an American citizen I will be so much more concerned about his opinion on our democratically elected president as opposed to the British monarchy. I dislike Hillary for many reasons none of which have to do with her being a woman. Go back to England Elton and next time you want to charge $500 per ticket for a concert, maybe some of your "misogynist" American fans won't help you out.

Obama should seek Axelrod's resignation, just as Clinton sought Penn's. That's exercising good judgment.
Obama should also fold his campaign into Hilary Clinton's. He would be a good veep. That would be showing a desire for unity within the party for the Fall.
Why?
Because, while Obama was rambling yesterday with Gen'l Petreus, Hilary was concise, convincing, and painted the Administration into a corner--they must now come to Congress before they reject any peace proposal in Iraq.
That's a big big concession, folks.
It's much bigger than Axelrod's strategy of "Michael Moore style" absolutism==painting Hilary as a war-monger because she (just as the Junior Senator would have had to) voted for Bush/Cheney's war against the people of Iraq.
Obama's followers will not lead him to the veep spot.
He must lead them.
Certainly there is a disconnect among members of a campaign who will browbeat a female delegate into resigning for exerting mothering skills. Most moms can't drop the kids off at daycare. They say things to kids. I do not believe this woman was being 'racist' any more than I believe the Clintons were racist, or that Geraldine Ferraro was racist.
It's about judgment and discretion.
Clinton did not attack Don Imus (idiot that he is) and make him more powerful as a result. Obama could learn a lot from the tutelage of the Clintons. But that's just the opinion of one person who wonders what people hated worst about the 90s--the peace or the prosperity?
Posted by: golden oldie | April 10, 2008 9:46 AM
I don't believe it's her sex that's the problem, I believe Obama is just more appealing at present. I find it funny however, that The Democrats lauded Hillary as the greatest thing since sliced bread not to long ago and are now deserting her in droves! Odd.
Posted by: Alan | April 10, 2008 9:47 AM
The Clintons are two faced, it's all for their pockets as old Bill has demonstrated. If presidential canidate Hillary was opposed to the Columbian trade deal as poor policy for the US citizens, then her husband should have turned the speaking opportunity down. Can't wait for the PA primaries, then Hillary will go home.

It's not sexism, its the need for change that's killing her. We've had many years of clinton's and bush's, we simply want something different for a change.

Dear Elton ->
One only needs to witness your hatred of women as depicted in those hideous videos during your "Red Piano" show in Las Vegas.
Maybe you should invite Bill, Hillary and Chelsea so that they can comment on your videos.

No Elton, It's Hilary that hurts Hilary. Too bad she can't compaign with her mouth sewed shut. She has acted like a queen in waiting ready for her coronation from the day she announced her candidacy. I'll never forget her "how dare you" look at Obama when he announced he was running..... it's not sexism, it's Hilary herself.

The Clinton Campaign has only themselves to blame! Bill Clinton started it in South Carolina re Race and now Hillary goes on all the gay shows to get their vote. She is portraying the "victim" to get the vote. And, boys against girls! She is a piece of work - never will she be president of these United States. She and her husband are divisive and liars extraordinaire!
Posted by: broadcast | April 10, 2008 10:02 AM
Finaly somebody to post before JEFF!!! And Sue - you are right as rain.
How can you say bias when neither African Americans or Men make up the majority of this Nation - COMBINED??? This is a woman's nation, and certainly a white majority nation. That is what the Clintons banked on when they started all the negative racial stuff. They unwisely distanced themselves from a powerful demographic and compounded that blunder with dirty politics and lies - and BLATANT whopper lies.
She wasn't counting on the YOUNG people - who are tired of old politics and played-out racism. Obama appeals to the MAJORITY of the nation and is running his campaign as an AMERICAN. And people who don't normally have a voice can feel him. Hillary and Mc-SAME know that. And there is no counter against it, except to be HONORABLE and present the issues and let the chips fall where they may.
Message: WE ARE TIRED OF BEING MANIPULATED.

America doesn't like strong women with opinions. Because we still define men and women in terms of their traditional roles and place in society, sexism will remain the last and prevailing acceptable form of discrimination.

Let's see-- the Clintons have played the race card and the gender card. It's now time for them to fold their cards and go home-- America is sick of them.

I couldn't disagree more Sue. At least on the internet, I've seen tons of overtly Sexist things from Obama supporters directed at Hillary.
Admittedly, I've also seen some overtly Racist things from Hillary supporters directed at Obama.
And BOTH have shocked me. Especially when I realize there are just Democrats in this fight.

Ask Obama if he has any idea what she's talking about.

Posted by: Clintonfan | April 10, 2008 10:35 AM
Elton John is absolutely correct. See the latest poll, which indicates that 76% of Americans are "ready" for a black president, whereas only 63% are "ready" for a woman president. Just from personal anecdotal evidence, it appears to me that many people (including women) don't believe women are capable of handling the job. Sexism is alive and well in this country.

Only 2.5 million raised, where are all the horrible and abusive females who claim to just love Hillary so much? What's wring with them, cannot put their money where they put all the smear postings we have to wade through?
Elton John got it all wrong, no one is against Hillary due to her femaleness it is because she is a fake and phony female. As a woman I think it is time to have a woman president, but not this woman. I wish Nancy Pelosi or one of the other "as sincere as a politician can be" females had decided to run.

A billionaire British knight trying to tell Americans who we should vote for. I thought we shed arrogant Brits in 1776. Too bad he didn't tailor for the third time his song, "Candle in the Wind," since Hillary's campaign is about the flicker out.
Posted by: Jeremiah | April 10, 2008 10:58 AM
I'm not getting it. Sir Elton spouts rhetoric laden with nationalistic superiority and intolerant religious threats, and we're wicked because we don't want to vote for Hillary? Where has he received authorization to send an entire nation to hell?
Posted by: Hendo | April 10, 2008 11:00 AM
Baloney.
I think most Americans are ready to see something other than a white male in the Oval Office, particularly anyone without a drawl. Hillary could have stolen the show. Personally, I am eager to see how a woman might handle the office. (n.b. Evidence from other countries and from the corporate world is, at best, mixed.)
But, as Sue observed above, Hillary's tongue has dealt her a probably mortal wound, and continues to do so with her cry-baby remarks about "double standards". America is, indeed, tired of lies (or "expedient exaggerations" as politicians and executives would call them) from their leaders. They're even more weary of cry-babies.
Hillary Clinton has shown her true stripes under the extreme duress of a presidential campaign. Is there any reason to believe that she would not show the same stripes in similarly stressful situations of national and international problems?
By the way, Elton, it's time to sit down...before you fall down. Your time is way, way over.

if america is so sexist, why was hillary dominating the early polls and the "inevitable" candidate at one point? don't you think if sexism was that much of a factor against her, she would have never led (by whopping margins) in the polls?
this is a very late and very flimsy excuse for the fact that they've run a deplorable campaign. as many, many, many posters have noted, it's not that hillary is a woman, it's that hillary is hillary.
anyone who buys into this whole "she's losing because the country is sexist" nonsense is not very bright. she's losing because she is not convincing voters, who originally were in her camp, that she is the best candidate. end of story.

Does anyone over here really care what Elton John thinks? He is not a voter registered United States citizen. . . as far as I know.
Posted by: naschkatzehussein | April 10, 2008 11:53 AM
Ahhh, what a landslide blow to HRC this column has dealt! I agree with almost everyone here that she is unelectable because of her personality and not becasue she is a woman.
I would also like to pick apart Posted by: Pamela | April 10, 2008 10:45 AM comment that more people are willing to vote black than for woman: If you are still the idiot type of person that follows polls, then you are not making educated points. Period. Polls could not be more wrong. Most people are sheep and stupid on many topics. Some polster calls them up on the phone and the resident idiot still answers the questions, as they are too dumb to say that they are not qualifified to answer.
So, with that background, we have an exceptionally electable black guy running against a monster of a white woman. So when idiots get asked about their opinions about if a woman can be president, they think of.....duh....Hillary, and then they don't think a woman can cut it. Now if Pelosi, or Rice, or many other more electable women were running, that statistic would change in a heartbeat.
Quit believing poll numbers you fools!!!

As someone recently pointed out, if Hillary Clinton greeted voters on the campaign trail with terms like "Sweetie" and kissed other voters on the cheek, like Obama does with woman voters, she'd be nailed just like that by the media.
Aside from this, given Mr. John's sexual orientation, how come Obama gets a pass from the media on being forthcoming about his views on gay rights? Clinton has expressed them--Obama is pretty tight-lipped. Whatever he favors, I'd just like to know.

"while Obama was rambling yesterday with General Petreus, Hillary was concise, convincing..."
Posted by: golden oldie | April 10, 2008 9:46 AM
Obviously your advanced years have affected both your hearing and judgment. Hillary did nothing more than what she usually does, try to look informed and in control for the cameras (and incidentally that's NOT gonna cut it). I think the more accurate description would have been "Calculating and conniving."
Obama's so called "Rambling" was simply his way of refining the questions down to a fine point where there would and could be NO room for speculation, spin, or subjective interpretation.
The point he made (very precisely in my opinion) was that we stand very little chance of achieving the goals in Iraq as set forth by the Bush administration, and that therefor if the country can be stabilized even marginally to the point where the burden can be shifted onto the Iraqi people themselves then that is what we will have to settle upon.
To do otherwise will keep us there for another 10 years minimum (I believe that was the estimate) and the American people are not willing to commit the resources (both manpower and financial) to do that.
Obama has a rare gift for articulation, and a keen ability to cut through rhetoric and hyperbole and get at the true underlying issue. I realize that tends to leave a lot of people (like Hillary) in the dust, but it is exactly the approach we're going to need if we're to overcome the problems we're going to be facing for the next decade.
Standing in front of a camera to record yourself promising things that you can't and don't even intend to do just adds to the frustration and animosity the voters feel toward you. Of all the lessons over the years, this one above all others is the single most important one Hilly should have learned, and she hasn't.
That's precisely why she's going to lose.

I'm betting Elton was one of the contributors at the big UK "charity event" that collected $1.5M and then paid Bill Clinton 1/3 (almost $500,000) to give a talk at the event!
It's not sexism to dislike crooks!!

So, Elton John, who, after giving a concert for Hillary's campaign (and why doesn't THAT violate campaign funding limits? When did an Elton John concert become valued at less than $2500?) became angry and accused Americans of being "misogynistic."
I'm sorry, but that guy is gay!! How misogynistic is THAT?
And, who in the hell cares what an idiotic Englishman has to say about America? I guess as long as he collects his massive royalties from this country, he feels that he has the right to come over here and insult anyone who is opposed to his lying, cheating friend, Hillary. F you, Elton John.

Sen. Clinton sounds increasingly desperate and this is getting really pathetic if she has to get a pinhead like Elton John to help her. Not to mention that he isn't even American. Many years ago when I was young and foolish I read Rolling Stone, and in 1974 they ran a piece about ej and they called him the 'maestro of mediocrity'. Politicians are all liars and crooks to a degree, but the best of the evils, in my opinion will be the FEMALE candidate on this one. Obama supporters are looking at a well groomed, well dressed, sometimes nicely spoken black man. He needs more experience under his belt before he can run AMERICA. Obama never said his grandmother used the N word get your facts straight! I am a female voter and the reasons i didnt vote for clinton had nothing to do with her sex. Its the fact that she is not trust worthy, boarderline bipolor and seems to suffer with a identiy crisis at the age of 60 yet she claims to have 35 years of experience! can we please include walmart in that 35 years of expericence!! well....i guess not! This isnt about her sex it is about her character and as far as Elton John goes he can take his comments and get out of america with them. He doesnt know whats going on.....he is just another celebrity that the clintons have payed for over the years. So i am not going to hell Elton but thank god im not voting for Hillary. Women can sense lying from a mile away us women are aware of our intuition and my gut feeling is telling me HRC will not be the next president of the united states.

Why trash Hilary that way?
Particularly when it's not true. It wasn't a staged moment (like Obama's great 'speech' moment when he should have been drilled with questions about a hate-mongering minister?) it was GOING ON THE RECORD AND PINNING DOWN A GENOCIDAL KILLING MACHINE.
Wake up!
Hilary supporters are not your enemy. Quite the opposite.
And if you happen to be on the obama payroll or hoping to be, the best way for that to happen is for him to become her vice president and be part of the SOLUTION, part of the UNIFICATION the campaign CLAIMS IT WANTS.

One can say about Obama--He's a mediocre candidate who would not have made it this far without the help of Oprah, and the fact that he IS Black. Seriously, a junior senator, with no experience managing a budget. The only good thing I can say about him is that he is ambitious.

ELTON, NO!
No sexism, No racism, No geriatricism, No class warfare, No intense hatred of Texans crawling through 'The Swamp'. Not in the 2008 Democrat party! No, No way, EJ.
Karl Rove.
Yeah, that's the ticket.

The media has been unfair to Hillary. I think her plans for the country if she is going to be President are fantastic. She is smart, strong and determined. Go Hillary and Thank you Elton John!

Always, Clintonites claim they want someone with experience. Yet, these boneheads voted for John Edwards, a one-term senator.
Elton John identifies more with Hillary and Princess Di. Obama scares him because he's a man, who's comfortable being a man. Still can't believe that John thinks the man who is his 'wife' is into him because of love and not the security that money brings. He's an aging "wannabe". Sad, so sad a person.

Lisa, not sure that your positive arguments are really reptilian enough for this here operation.
HEY, The Fl is for Florida. That's the Sunshine State. U and I, Lisa, we just live on the wrong side of the tracks here.
Lisa/Fl, I do appreciate what you are saying.

I can't understand why we would want a president that would cry in public when things didn't go their way like what happened in Iowa.

If the media had not been such a kiss A** to obamodam he would not be where he is. The media has been so afraid of being prejudiced because of his color that they have whitewashed every lie and coniving piece of C**P that has come out obamodam's mouth. Lies, denial, calling race at every turn. You will all read it and weep when McCain wins in the general election because so many people will not vote for the lying, racist wife, racist minister loving obamodam. Good luck!!! And 100 more years in Iraq. Lets see if this gets printed.

Personally, I'd like to tell "Dame" Elton to go to hell.

Elton is right!!! Never have I heard such nasty stuff about anyone.

to golden oldie comments, if clinton had paid attention to the terror attacks that came on his watch, we might not be in the mess we're in right now

It never ceases to amaze me the team of organized Obama bloggers who hit all of Hillary links to conjure negativity. Yes, this is another reason why Clinton supporters are insulted. Deal with this fact. Hillary pulls older more experienced voters. Why? Because most of you Obama supporters are young experiencing your first presidential nomination. As a man who is a democrat --- it IS SO OBVIOUSLY CLEAR the double standard exists in the media. Go to your own Obama blogs. You are not winning us over with your constant negativity!

ok Hiilary lied an she accepted, all the obama lies has been ignore, but people keep punished her again and again, stop. she will make it, if only america knew about omaba's pastor, his terrorist friends , tony rezko , the lies about his father, his 138 "present" votes, etc etc Before this campaing, guess how many votes he will have? The madia made a good job that's make belive all people that Hillary is not good at all,
12 years in arkansas, 8 as first lady,

Elton John may be gay but he has more brains than most straight guys in this country. The American men most definitely are sexist. England had Margaret Thatcher, Germany has Angela Merkel and Israel had Golda Mier. But the United States has never had a female President. It's about time!

Hillary Clinton makes people angry..WHY? Because she is not afraid to strongly disagree with views not her own.Because she is what a handful of people in this country( a few men and sadly some misguided women) fear.A woman with a backbone, a heart, a mind and an opinion!
I saw her speak at Toledo and she totally won me over. I was not a Hillary fan until I began to really LISTEN to what she is saying. She cares very much for our country..she is not a vicious liar, she is HUMAN she makes mistakes.Any one out there TOTALLY free of mistakes? Ever had an opinion on something , then changed your opinion? Maybe you did not have all of the facts earlier..Didn't you just LOVE that man(or woman) ?.5 years later though..That dirty ***,* What did I ever see in him(her?)..Ever been wrong about one of your kids, punished them only to learn later the other kid did it? Felt bad..huh? But now you KNOW better..so do you keep on being wrong, do you refuse to admit your mistake so you can save face?...Or do you try to do better?
Folks , I ;m just saying, Hillary is not Jesus Christ, she is a flawed human being like the rest of us out here..she is truly the best candidate for United States President...she truly wants American peace and prosperity again. Get past your childish bias and really listen to these candidates speak. Senator Obama parrots Hillarys great ideas..he truly does.
Hillary NEVER played the race card..the MEDIA did that and Sen. Obama took up the cry..Hillary DID NOT vote for war in IRAQ..she voted on what was placed before her and the rest of the American public..the LIES of the current occupant of the White House..War was an absolute Last resort, we were told...LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE, GEORGE!
Lastly, shame on all of the hate mongers out there. You are entitled to your opinions, but isn't it funny how when you know you are wrong you resort to insults and mud-slinging.
