Saying “we are no longer staring into the abyss of defeat,” Sen. John McCain speaks to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Kansas City this morning, laying out his vision of the situation in Iraq just one day before General David Petraeus testifies before Congress.

McCain will tell his audience that the U.S. “can now look ahead to the genuine prospect of success” in Iraq. And he defines it this way:

*The establishment of a generally peaceful, stable, prosperous, democratic state that poses no threat to its neighbors and contributes to the defeat of terrorists.

*The advance of religious tolerance over violent radicalism.

*A level of security that allows the Iraqi authorities to govern, the average person to live a normal life, and international entities to operate. It is a situation in which the rule of law, after decades of tyranny, takes hold.

*And it is an Iraq where Iraqi forces have the responsibility for enforcing security in their country, and where American troops can return home, with the honor of having secured their country’s interests at great personal cost, and helping another people achieve peace and self-determination.

Those goals, McCain will say, “are within reach.”

McCain, who just returned from a visit to Iraq, takes on both the Democratic candidates for president who are advocating for withdrawing troops calling their plans “the height of irresponsibility.”

“Some would withdraw regardless of the consequences. Others say that we can withdraw now and then return if trouble starts again,” McCain will say according to prepared remarks. “What they are really proposing, if they mean what they say, is a policy of withdraw and re-invade. For if we withdraw hastily and irresponsibly, we will guarantee the trouble will come immediately. Our allies, Arab countries, the UN, and the Iraqis themselves will not step up to their responsibilities if we recklessly retreat. I can hardly imagine a more imprudent and dangerous course.”

McCain will also defend himself against Sen. Barack Obama’s charges that he would keep troops fighting in Iraq for 100 years.

“I do not want to keep our troops in Iraq a minute longer than necessary to secure our interests there,” he will say. “Our goal is an Iraq that can stand on its own as a democratic ally and a responsible force for peace in its neighborhood. Our goal is an Iraq that no longer needs American troops. And I believe we can achieve that goal, perhaps sooner than many imagine.”

Ah, yes, McCain sees "the light at the end of the tunnel."

You can bet McCain represents the worst choice for showing judgment about war.

And this is the same guy who said BHO is prepared for the job. The only thing they have in common is the sexism. WHEN WILL THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA ASK FOR THIRTY YEARS WORTH OF OBAMA AND ROBINSON TAX RECORDS. THESE TWO HAVEN'T BEEN MARRIED THAT LONG, SO LET'S REALLY INVESTIGATE THIRTY YEARS OF EVERY SINGLE ASPECT OF THEIR LIVES NOW BEFORE THE REPUBLICANS DO!
The Obama supporters relentlessly race-bait anyone who disagrees with them even SLIGHTLY.
And, apparently being sexist is the last allowable habit of stupid people (male and female in America. But the smart people are now fighting back. Watch Geraldine Ferraro expose Randi Rhodes for the pea-brained person she really is:
http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com/2008/04/geraldine-ferraro-responds-to-randi.html
Why wouldn’t the other media outlets run this? Well, Fox knows there’s very little risk of Hilary winning anyway, so why not? But the other mainstream media outlets do not want to get caught doing anything to help THE ONE CANDIDATE WHO CAN STILL BEAT JOHN MCCAIN—AND THAT’S HILARY. Note who’s posting it—Tennessee Guerilla Women. News Flash—Hilary TOOK the mid-South, and you need that to win in the fall campaign. Barack’s fake wins in Iowa and elsewhere (republicans cross over, bosses intimidate caucus employees, stuffed ballot boxes in Minnesota), EVEN WHILE OBAMA REFUSES TO STEP IN AND SAY THE DEMS WILL REVOTE MICHIGAN AND FLORIDA!
Now, watch the Obama campaign trolls call me racist for saying so.
Unbelievable!

McCain pushes his easy victory pablum again just like he did in the run up to the war in 2002.

“Because I know that as successful as I believe we will be, and I believe that the success will be fairly easy, we will still lose some American young men or women.” [CNN, 9/24/02]

“We’re not going to get into house-to-house fighting in Baghdad. We may have to take out buildings, but we’re not going to have a bloodletting of trading American bodies for Iraqi bodies.” [CNN, 9/29/02]

“But the point is that, one, we will win this conflict. We will win it easily.” [MSNBC, 1/22/03]

He was wrong then, and he's wrong now. Victory isn't in
sight.

Is McCain overly optimistic or dishonest? It doesn't really matter in the end to the dead americans and their families who pay the pricef or McCain's positions.

Maybe he beleives the song "When You Wish Upon a Star" and his dreams really will come true?

War monger!

The repub strategy is clear. They know the White House and Congress are lost, so they need something to save face. After Barack or Hillary ends this nonsense, and I'm really not so sure about Barack, the GOP can go on the air saying, "we were soooo close to victory, but the defeatocrats surrendered." Never mind that the situation in Iraq is just as it was when the idiot declared, "mission accomplished."

What is this about a US success? I thought it was about Iraq pulling themselves together politically. I thought it was all about Iraq's success. The US troops are a success. No more lies. No more proping up a Mid East country that will not prop itself up. No more US money to go to Iraq when Iraq has a higher current account balance ranking than does the
USA. The USA ranking is dead last of the 164 nations for which information is available-----see, CIA The World Factbook Rank Order- Current account balance March 20, 2008.

The USA is much further behind in ranking order than the many nations we give billions of dollars in aid to each year. Why do we pay fed income tax to an anti-American or irresponsible Bush fed gov't? Why does Bush (and now McCain) want to bankrupt America? For what multinational corporations is this being done? Since we are now the United Corporations for Free Trade instead of the United States of America-- this means that Bush is forcing America into socialism, to our demise, for the benefit of the REST of the world---while gaining more "free" trade and more profitable enterprise for a few large business/multi nationals.

I think Iraq was about hurling the biggest blow to take the life out of and pull America down--to make us subservient to multi nationals, about elected "officials" making defense dividends, and all bout the oil for a few profiteers. McCain would just be a long, evil arm of Bush/Cheney reaching into the next four or eight years--making sure that BushCorp's agenda sticks. No, no McCain. I'm for life, for America owning America, and for financial responsibility on the part of those elected to care for all of America.

You're an idiot, Bill Hussein. No candidate in this race knows the very real costs of war and has seen them up close and personal more than John McCain. He's the only candidate whose sons are in the military. He's the only candidate who has 20 years of military experience as a basis to form his strategy for victory on. He's the only veteran running, and even your Obamessiah has told you that he's not a "warmonger."

You lefties have whined for months that you didn't know what "victort in Iraq" was. McCain just told you. Now you complain because his vision isn't defeatist enough for you. Don't you all have a Che Guevara picture you have to go hang up or something?

p.s. Chuckman, isn't Canada on strike still?

Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran Jeff.
He is a warmonger and has his sites on Iran. He sings a cute little ditty about it. Didn't he sing it for you?

Don't you have a war to sign up for? Chickenpoop!

Chickenpoop? And you have the gall to accuse other posters of acting childish.

Bomb Iran? A joke he made at a campaign event? That's your substantive argument against the candidate? I love how devoted the hardcore left is to using BS as an issue in this election. They have to trot out the 100 years in Iraq and Bomb Iran stuff because they can't touch McCain on experience or credibility. Your guy's already lost, Mr. Hussein, you just don't know it yet.

You lefties have whined for months that you didn't know what "victort in Iraq" was. McCain just told you.

*The advance of religious tolerance over violent radicalism.
-
In which century is that going to happen? If that's one of McCain's definitions of victory, then he underestimated when he said 100 years.

Jeffy, McCain did a nice job of describing what he will consider a victory, I suppose. Trouble is, judging by the recent fighting between Shiite militia groups, the rocket attacks in the green zone, and the failure of Iraqi leaders to reach a compromise, stabilizing Iraq may take several decades.
