The Swamp

by Jill Zuckman

Sen. John McCain condemned former President Jimmy Carter's decision to meet with Hamas and used it to criticize Sen. Barack Obama for not taking a stand on Carter's foray into the Middle East.

"It is a grave and dangerous mistake for an American leader to meet with a terrorist organization like Hamas," McCain said. "Engaged in a campaign that deliberately targets innocent Israeli civilians, Hamas is dedicated to the destruction of Israel. President Carter is wrong to meet with Hamas, a terrorist group that has also killed innocent Americans."

"The very idea that a former President of the United States and Commander-in-Chief would meet with a terrorist organization demands a clear stance from all presidential candidates," he said. "Refusing to take a stand, as Senator Obama has done, is not the strong leadership we need today. If Senator Obama is not decisive enough to condemn former President Carter, how can he be strong enough to deal with the threat they pose to America and to our allies?"

The wrong judgement point comes through again. This Bush mentality of not talking to anyone is BAD judgement. Does our ignoring these groups make them go away or become irrelevant? This is absolute nonsense. Not only does he not want to talk to these groups, he wants to sing ditties about bombing Iran. Thats very presidential, just like our last president...Bush.

First of all, Obama doesn't have anything to do with this right now and second, John W McCain needs to go back to Arizona for awhile and figure out the difference between the Sunni's and the Shiites in Iraq before he starts throwing around any more accusations regarding foreign affairs.

This article shows how wrong-minded it was for Obama to want to be aligned with Jimmy Carter at the same time he's dissing those middle-aged women--just like Carter did with Bella Abzug.
We remember.
We not only vote--we get the vote OUT for the Democratic Party.
Carter was only popular after he left office.
Some of us even voted for Ford because Jack Anderson predicted the disaster Carter would be for the Democratic Party--that he would fail and help usher in Ronald Reagan (Obama's guy).
Who is Obama exactly?
Yet another example that this nationally unvetted candidate cannot be the top of our ticket. HRC is NOT the enemy.
What’s wrong with waiting 8 years, Obama and Gobamas? Wait for LBJ’s 3rd generation of Dixiecrats to kick the bucket.
I used to say that. And I may say that again.
But, give a listen to the audio posted by Mayhill Fowler (the not so pretty girl recently on the bus who savvily recorded the disturbing speech in California).
It’s a disturbing speech and shaking a ‘you are naughty’ finger at Hilary Clinton will not work.
In fact, the whole strategy for ‘dealing’ with his comment disturbs me even more.
Because, there seems to be a pattern emerging from not just the Obama campaign, but from the lips of Obama himself:
Exclude from the ‘movement’ or otherwise silence the non-enthusiastic or
‘offending’ middle aged white or elderly women.
Listen to the audio Mayhill recorded—and be sure to thank her and show your support for her. She will need it, if Tavis Smiley is any example of how people non-conforming to the Obama message of ‘hope’ get treated.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mayhill-fowler/obama-exclusive-audio-on_b_96333.html
His comments to the crowd that we need ‘new people’ in the Democratic party kind of chilled me to the bone. I find him very intolerant. I find his campaign intolerant. He responded to a question about his ability to really unite the party after such a divisive campaign by saying that “people get their feelings hurt” and they’ll be back (basically).
I don’t think that’s the case. People left his campaign because we felt it was using the wrong strategy and felt (but couldn’t quite put our finger on WHY it was fundamentally wrong-minded.
In his speech last night, in which he mentioned that ‘abstinence” and teaching appropriate behavior would be a good idea—heck—the people he BASHED last night have been speaking about this stuff for years! In fact, the Planned Parenthood crowd in Kalamazoo, Michigan (who later came to Chicago) managed to get a K-12 systematic sex education curriculum passed in the late 1970s. The JOHN BIRCH society worked to get it removed from the schools—and the Planned Parenthood clinic was actually bombed.
Would 70s style peaceful activists be part of the mature crowd Obama now wants replaced with his Gobama crowd? No. Not if he can help it.
That’s what it’s looking like to me.
Particularly when I heard Obama last night say talk about the pro-choice people he said were reluctant to infuse a “moral dimension’ into the abortion issue.
Patently false. Shame on Barack Obama.
Shame on him also for the recent clarification that in fact he DID attend a Muslim school (the public schools in Indonesia were like the community—women didn’t have to wear the veil, but…) seems like he was earlier being less than forthcoming. Even in liberal Islamic settings, women have a back of the bus status. I do NOT think Obama has been honest enough about this.
I think he’s sexist. Not just for the relentless bashing of Geraldine Ferraro, but for something really revealing in his speech last night, he ‘could not remember’ whether he’d had a conversation with his daughters about God. Well, if you’re in a 50’s throwback marriage where mommy is the main person interacting with the kids when they’re not in the expensive, enriching U of C daycare---then you perhaps are leaving a lot of that stuff to the wifey.
And perhaps that’s why Michelle (back when she let reporters cover her fund-raising) cut loose with the “ladies against women” style rant against Hilary (“How can she handle the White House when she ‘can’t manage’ her own house (sic).”)
The problem with sexism or any ‘ism’ is the elitism at its heart.
But there’s another reason why the Obamas must mature more before they’re at the top of the ticket.
They’ve let the newfound celebrity go to their heads.
Call it the ‘diva factor’.
Bonnie Raitt (you might remember she and Jackson Browne played a New Hampshire benefit for John Edwards’ superior approach—since adopted by Hilary Clinton—regarding nuclear power, greenhouse gases, and whatnot) chafed at being called a diva on a blues show last night. She said it reminded her of the old saw “Don’t look Miss Ross in the eye as she heads on stage.”
Barack Obama as diva.

It's nice to see that John W McCain is continuing the Bush policy of not talking to anyone that they don't like, I mean, that has worked so well the past seven years so why not continue it.....NOT!

"MCCAIN SPEAKS"

CONDI WENT, I WENT, LINDSAY GRAHAM WENT, HIS WIFE WENT, WE ALL WENT.

WHO ARE YOU TO GO, MR. PRESIDENT! WHO ARE YOU TO SPEAK TO FORMER WORLD LEADERS MR. PRESIDENT? WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!

I'M THE NEXT "COVENANT" I'M ORDAINED THE FIRST AMERICAN NOT BORN ON AMERICAN SOIL TO THE WHITE HOUSE!

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? WE HAVE PLANS, WE HAVE BOMB, BOMB IRAN IRAN PLANS. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE.

NOW WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL NEXT WEEK WHEN DICK CHENEY COMES BACK FROM HIS HUNTING TRIP.

I WILL "CONDEMN" ANY PRESIDENT THAT SENDS A "PEACEFULL MESSAGE" IN THE REGION.

NO DIPLOMACY, WE JUST AUTHORIZED 40 MILLION MORE FOR THE PALESTINIANS. IS THAT NOT ENOUGH.

NO FORMER PRESIDENTS WILL BE ALLOWED TO DO MY BIDDING, EVEN THOUGH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVEN'T VOTED FOR ME TO DO THEIR BIDDING. BUT THE "ELITIST" IN ME HAD TO COME OUT AND CONDEMN ANY EFFORTS OF "DIPLOMACY" IN THE REGION. THAT WOULD BE COUNTER PRODUCTIVE.

OH WHERE OH WHERE IS CONDI NOW, OH WHERE OH WHERE HAS SHE GONE.

"SHOPPING" IN DOWNTOWN PALESTINE. OH!

JIMMY GET OUT OF MY PALESTINIAN WAR ZONE!
NO DIPLOMACY FOR THEM!

McBush = McWar. This guy is morphing into George Bush and Dick Cheney. Keep opening your mouth John. The more Americans see what a bad choice this guy is the better.

I think it's a good idea to meet with them. There might actually be a reasonable person in a position of power. We won't know that unless we are willing to listen to them.

I guess he needs the Israeli lobby to keep him in the running. What do you expect when his staunchest supporter is Joe Lieberman, "part-time American, full-time Zionist, and pro bono legislator for Israel. Who were the Americans killed by Hamas? I can think of an innocent 23 year old American that was mowed down by an Israeli bulldozer as she tried to defend the home of a Palestinian - remember Rachel Corrie.

McCain is as ignorant about the Middle East as he is about the economy. Being a POW doesn't automatically qualify you to be savvy when it comes to foreign affairs. He just wants to be President and the glory of being in the history books, that's all.
He's been held up all these years by corporate America and the other lobbyist who have him in their pockets.

Two of the grandest America haters -- Bill r and John E. -- are all for Peanut Brain meeting terrorist group Hamas.
Let's just put it this way: Jimmy Carter was the worst president -- by far -- this country ever experienced and he is by far the worst former president too. He is and always has been an embarrassment. No wonder the Left loves him so much!

Can't you find something new to cut and paste, you idiot?!

That post of yours, as usual, doesn't even have anything to do with the topic!!!

Lil Johnny Ducksnort,

First off, Republican Prez Chimpy is the worst President we've ever had and second, the "Republican foreign policy strategy" of not talking to people you don't like sounds like something a bunch of 5th graders would come up with during their recess.

I think Senator McCain should quit politics and go and run an S&L, into the ground, that is. That seems to be where his expertise lies. It sure isn't politics!!!
Oh, but we can put ourselves into hock to communist China, but we can't speak to an important part of the problem, in the Middle East, Hamas!!! That sure doesn't make any sense, but then nothing does that originates from Bush's playbook!! I think Senator McCain should find himself another mentor, President Bush is not of the right stuff!!! Never was and never will be!!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

So who's this speaking, a new candidate or the same 8 year George Bush? Give me a break! Jimmy Carter is not only the former president of the United States but last I check he is also an adult who perhaps thinks we should try something different, like in diplomacy or something. One thing for sure nothing Bush has done in his years in the White House has worked diplomatically. All he's done is bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iraq and now hellbent on bomb bomb bomb bombing bombing Iran and along with this McCain wiping out the entire middle east along with Lieberman. I think they all should just talk to Obama, he has his finger on the pulse of this nation and the world!

" John D " if you had any idea about what you are posting about, I would have a comment for you, but unfortunately, you don't, and I haven't.
Keep up your postings, though, they are very amusing, in a silly sort of a way!!!

We shouldn't be afraid to talk to anyone. I'm glad the Pres. Carter is doing something, G.W.Bush isn't doing a dam thing just running up bills and playing scared. We need a back bone in the White House not someone who is afraid to talk to other. McBush need to head out to the fields and grow some sense.

Meeting with terrorists will not make them stop killing people for their cause. That Jimmy Carter doesn't understand this simple fact explains many of the failures of his administration and his public crusade to rehabilitate his image since by meeting with people like Kim Il-Sung.

McCain sounds bitter to me. Why is John McCain so bitter?

Former President Carter was a disaster as President and even worse as a wold diplomat. He should go back to building houses for the poor.

I know JohnD...we disagree with you so that makes us America haters. I've heard that all day from Jeff. Divide and conquer...right John? What part of your America says I don't have a right to disagree? I lsten to your dribble yet I don't question you patronage. Why are the ones who claim to be such "great" Americans, hate Americans with a different view?

Meetin with terrorists and giving them guns worked for Ronald Reagan!!!! And many people, many who post on the Swamp want his image on a US coin to boot. You people and your double standards. Ronald Reagan can talk to and arm Islamo terrorists, but Jimmy Carter can't talk to them???

Wow--the Obama HQ cliffs notes for bloggers went out rather late today. Welcome to the world of work, kids.
"oldengoldie" sounds a lot like Julie Mack and Angellight.

Patriotism, not patronage, Bill Hussein. Patronage is something that Tony Rezko pays Obama for.

McChimp has no moral standing.

Every hear of a guy called Gerry Adams, Jeff?

Would the world be better off if the Good Friday Accords had never been signed out of fear of talking to terrorists?

Wew all know what the John McCain solution to Northern Ireland would have been....Bomb Ireland back to the stone age.

McCain turns Churchill's statement on it's head. "War War is always better than Jaw Jaw."

To Sojourner Truth: (BOY ! What a misnomer THAT is for you !), you are absolutely right, HRC is NOT the enemy. THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS ! When it comes to terrorists (one of my relatives was murdered by Al Queda), the only word you reflexively come up with is "SURRENDER" !

To John D regarding J. Carter: I COULDN'T AGREE WITH YOU MORE ! That sorry excuse is an embarrassment to ALL Americans. Too bad you can't impeach an EX-President (who lost reelection in one of the biggest landslides in history because Americans couldn't wait to get rid of the bum !).

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't that incompetent idiot get a medal and millions of dollars from the Nobel Prize committee BECAUSE he said that HE convinced the North Koreans to give up their nuclear weapons which they denied having in the first place ? And since we KNOW they DO have nuclear weapons, because they detonated one and proudly publicly proclaimed it, just WHEN is J. Carter going to RETURN the UNDESERVED medal and UNDESERVED few million dollars he received, since he was such an obvious utter failure once AGAIN ? !

You liberals are truly sick (and probably evil), you care NOTHING for freedom and the U.S.A. and you actively support the terrorists !

May God forgive you, because I certainly won't !

on OBAMAS refusal to take a stand on CARTER'S trip ..how can he when obama's senior advisor MILLEY has known to negotiate with HAMAS and has helped terroists groups financially... and let's see the ones OBAMA has known to "hang with" ayers, prof.khalidi's ARAB-AMERICAN ACTION NETWORK WHICH obama APPROVED LOANS OF $40,000 AND 35,000 WHILE OBAMA SAT ON THE WOODS FUND ALONG WITH ayers mmmmmmmmm so much for not being "involved"

Daniel P--I am truly sorry to hear that one of your relatives was killed by a friend of George W. Bush's clan.
How terrible that this man was allowed to steal the vote in this great country that my father, a world war II veteran, helped preserve.
I am glad you are a member of the NRA. I wish you well in all your endeavors.
We just disagree.
But--just so you'll know---my dad was a Republican who was disgusted in later years at how bonkers the party became.
He voted for Bill Clinton.
Were he still alive, I believe he'd vote for Hillary.
I hope you'll change your mind.
Take care.

Jimmy Carter, Master Negotiator, embarking on another mission to broker peace in the Mideast. Cut a deal with the Hamas folk, give them some legitimacy, make those Israelis give up more land, and shazam!, peace in the neighborhood. Yeah, this is how you conduct foreign policy. Have an official policy and then go at them Jimmy Carter style.

democrats, it's as if you paid a REAL mechanic to fix the transmission on your car. Then, when he stops to light one up, I come in and make a few adjustments. My main tools being a nice hammer (all good mechanics have one of these), a cold steel chisel, and some JB Weld.

Ah, yes, the gloriously ignominious Jimmy Carter. Free people everywhere should tip-toe a little more lightly at night.

Daniel P:

I'm sorry about your very deep self-loathing. The rest of us like you even if you don't like yourself.

Yes -- You are wrong about Carter's Nobel Prize. He did not claim to have gotten NK to give up their nukes. And, FWIW, NK did not recently detonate nukes. It blasted a missile.

How's it feel to be a proud member of a political party that despises you for the sexuality you've had since the day you were born? You, my friend, are a basket case.

Carter is a joke. He would accomplish more talking to a Golden Retriever than he would talking to Hamas. Obama will not denounce Carter. He is terrified of saying anything that even remotely resembles something Bush would say, regardless of what he really believes. He doesn't want the nuts on the far left to turn on him like they have on Hillary.

By the way, reason #804 of why I can't stand Obama - he makes Hillary Clinton look sympathetic. Reason #805 - he makes Hillary Clinton look like a centrist, when in reality she is a flaming liberal.

Only idiots burry their heads in the sand folks. Talking to someone is the quickest way to get a "feel" of a situation, and to make some real changes. This is another one of the big reasons that will keep McCain from the big seat.

I don't know, Herbie. Golden Retrievers are very noble and FAITHFUL compadres. No self-respecting Golden Retriever that I KNOW, would waste any precious free time trying to reason with the ignominiously inept Jimmy Carter or his crew.

To sojourner:. My relative, Dennis Scauso, FDNY, was NOT killed by "a friend of George W. Bush's clan." He was murdered by Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda, a terrorist organization that has killed thousands of innocent people around the world, and a group you apparently support.

To blinkin: I am not "self-loathing", but openly and proudly gay, Christian, and active in my Christian church, where we have many gay members presently, and 3 gay pastors in the past 20 years. The church is not a "gay church" though. it is about 85% straight and we are celebrating our 150th Anniversary this spring.

i have been out since 1979 and have proudly marched in the Gay Pride Parade since 1981, so "self-loathing" is certainly not part of my character.

And blinkin, learn what you are talking about. North Korea detonated a nuclear bomb on the morning of October 9, 2006 and proudly publicly proclaimed it. Look it up in wikipedia or elsewhere on the web. So when is J. Carter giving all the money back for his obvious failure ?

I am a Libertarian and will not vote for Billary, Obama or McCain.

SUPPORT THE 2ND AMENDMENT ! SUPPORT THE U.S. CONSTITUTION !

Some of you seem to forget that it was Jimmy Carter who was responsible for bringing Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin together to sign the Camp David Accords which brought peace between Egypt and Israel. It is amazing that some of you have tunnel vision when it comes to history and the accomplishments of truly patriotic Americans like Jimmy Carter, and yet continue to make excuses for the foibles of MCBush and company who have never attempted at any reconciliation with any warring factions. Those so-called "terrorists", Hamas, would beg to differ and call themselves "freedom fighters" against an unjust occupation by a terrorist state, Israel). Again it depends on whose propaganda you believe the most and your own personal prejudices and world view.

Jimmy Carter is a great American, maybe his economic policy was not apt, but you cannot fault him on his successful attempt to bring some partial peace to the Middle East.

J. Carter lied when he said he got the Communist North Koreans to give up their nuclear program. He received a Nobel Prize for it. HE DID NOT GET THEM TO GIVE UP THEIR NUCLEAR WEAPONS. THEY DETONATED A NUCLEAR BOMB PROVING SO.

So WHEN is J. Carter giving his ill-gotten loot (in the millions) back for his failure ?

Daniel from Long Island: Good for you! More and more it is obvious the true haters and gay bashers are those on the Left.
I am straight and active in my church. Despite how the Left likes to portray Christians, there are no people who are more caring and more loving than Christians.
And, my sincerest condolences on the loss of your relative from the terrorist attack on this country.

He is and always has been an embarrassment. No wonder the Left loves him so much!

Hey John D, people called George Washington a terrorist to. One man's "terrorist" is another man's "freedom fighter". This from King George's perspective, of course.

The classic definition of terrorism is violence directed against civilians to make a political point. The term shouldn't be applied to an indigenous population fighting an irregular war against a foreign occupying army, since that would have made everyone from George Washington to the French Resistance to the Afghanis confronting the Soviet occupation "terrorists."
Though Americans understandably detest anyone killing U.S. soldiers - whatever the circumstances - it is not "terrorism." In effect, the Senate resolution is choosing to use “terrorist” as a geopolitical curse word against any combatant who challenges U.S. military might.

John D, proof brainwashing does work. Enjoy the Kool-Aid!

You folks are so clueless and mucked up in the brain it's beyond being funny and sad.

Earth to John D, Hamas was THE REASON Arafat pulled out of The Oslo 2. Did I at any point mention Hamas you freak. Talking to you is like talking to a brick wall. Only dumber!!! In future bright boy don't put words in my mouth, you monosyllabic cretin.

Nevertheless, the Bush administration opposed congressional legislation mandating sanction against Syria's sponsorship of terrorist groups, prior to Sept 2002 despite the fact that five Americans were among the victims of a July 31 2002 Hamas suicide bombing in Jerusalem. If the families of these victims take legal action, however, the publicity may force the administration to take a tougher line. The 1996 Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act allows American citizens to sue foreign governments officially designated as state sponsors of terrorism in US courts.

July 31, 2002, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel. Nine people were killed when a bomb exploded in the main cafeteria at the Hebrew University's Mount Scopus campus in Jerusalem. Five were U.S. citizens: Janis Ruth Coulter, 36, of MA; Marla Bennet, 24, of San Diego, CA; David Gritz (also a French citizen), 24, of Peru, MA; Benjamin Blutstein, 25, of Susquehanna Township, PA; and Dina Carter, 37, of NC. Israelis David Ladovsky, 29, and Levina Shapira, 53 also died in the bombing. U.S. citizens injured: Spencer Dew, 26, of Owensboro, Kentucky; Zeev Spencer; Harris Gershon; Jamie Harris. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack.

But again John D mindlessly attacks me without ANY RESEARCH on the subject. Your precious Bush administration didn't seem to give a rats a%s back in July of 2002.

"It is almost a cliche to say that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. George Washington, for example, was a "terrorist" to the British and Loyalist forces who opposed him during the Revolution, and he was a "freedom fighter" to the Patriots. If the American Revolution had failed, the history books might have recorded him as a "criminal" rather than a "Founding Father." Much depends on the interpretation of the political circumstances surrounding the man, as well as the tactics used."

Nelson Mandela, another Nobel Peace Prize winner, did not get life imprisonment on Robben Island for sitting in at lunch counters, but if memory serves, for plotting terror to overthrow the regime.

Jomo Kenyatta, the "Grand Old Man" of Africa in the 1960s, was the leader of the Mau Mau in the 1950s. Ahmed Ben Bella led Algeria's war of independence, in which terror was the insurgents' weapon and torture the counter-weapon of the French.

During Tet in 1968, the Viet Cong went through the city of Hue with hit lists, executing 3,000 civilians. Within months, America was negotiating "peace with honor" with the V.C. US ties are now improving with Hanoi, where the body of Ho Chi Minh lies in state, as does that of Mao in Beijing and Lenin in Moscow. All three employed terror.

What is Nagasaki – the atomic bombing of a defenseless city of a defeated nation – other than an act of slaughter, killing 40,000 men, women and children in minutes to force Japan's warlords to submit to America's will?

But that was war, we say, and Japan was the aggressor. Does that also justify Dresden? Is air terror permissible in a just war if a nation can demonstrate it was the victim of aggression?

Saddam's Iraq did not threaten us, did not attack us, did not want war with us, did not have weapons of mass destruction. Yet, we attacked, invaded and occupied Iraq. And when Iraqis attack our troops, we call it terror and we call them terrorists.

Is terrorism, then, like beauty, in the eye of the beholder?

John Brown murdered men in Kansas in reprisal for the killing of Northerners and killed civilians in his raid on Harper's Ferry to ignite a slave revolt. Brown was hanged as a terrorist. Yet the 1920s epic poem on the Civil War written by Stephen Vincent Benet would be titled, "John Brown's Body." And the first lines of the fighting song of the Union army were: "John Brown's body lies a-mouldering in the grave, but his soul goes marching on. Glory, glory hallelujah."

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Or so it would seem.
