Joe Scarborough, former congressman from Pensacola, and John McCain, who learned to fly at the Naval Air Station there, had plenty of fun today joking about “the cradle of aviation'' -- and the most famous bar in the Florida Panhandle port city's downtown strip.
But now that McCain is Top Gun for the Republican Party, he faces more serious matters, such as Sen. Barack Obama’s repeated references to McCain’s “100-year war’’ in Iraq: “Clearly Sen. Obama is being disingenuous, because he knows better… Clearly, I said, just as we’ve been in Germany, South Korea, etc., that’s a presence after we win the war, but I don’t think the American people will buy it. ‘’
“The American people know that I have said, I would much rather lose a campaign than lose a war, and there will be ups and downs,’’ McCain said on MSNBC with Scarborough today. “Obviously Iraq will be a big issue, but right now the economy’’ is on peoples’ minds.
Following word that he has started compiling a list of running mates, McCain was asked about Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts whom he faced in the primaries.
“I was pleased to have Mitt Romney with me last week campaigning,’’ he said. “He did very well in the campaign. He has earned in a place in our party. But so has Gov. Huckabee, and Rudy Giuliani is a friend of mine… We are just not at a point where we want to talk about, much less discuss, specific candidates.’’
McCain, who has included Pensacola on his week-long tour of memory lane, shared a little more inside humor with Scarborough – mentioning a certain bar that played a promiment role in McCain’s self-revealing autobiography, Faith of My Fathers. “You’ve got to laugh at yourself,’’ McCain said. “Ask Joe scarborough. He will not, on air, tell some of the stores of my expending my entire paycheck at a cultural establishment called Trader John’s in Pensacola many years ago.’’

I wonder if John W McBush told this story on his "this was my life" tour?
McCain Lost Five Military Aircraft:
"McCain, the "below par" pilot, eventually lost 5 military aircraft, the first during a training flight in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus Christi Bay while trying to land. The Navy ignored the crash and graduated McCain in 1960".
"While deployed in the Mediterranean, the hard partying McCain lost a second aircraft. Timberg described the crash: "Flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula, he took out some power lines which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the son of an admiral."
"Unscathed, McCain returned to Pensacola Station where he was promoted to flight instructor for Naval Air Station Meridian in Mississippi. The airfield at Meridian, McCain Field, was named in honor of McCain's grandfather".
"In 1964 McCain became involved with Carol Shepp, a model from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he had met at Annapolis. They were married in Philadelphia on July 3, 1965".
"Flight instructor McCain lost a third aircraft while flying a Navy trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game. Timberg wrote that McCain radioed, "I've got a flameout" before ejecting at one thousand feet. McCain parachuted onto a beach moments before his plane slammed into a clump of trees".
"The Navy dismissed the crash as "unavoidable" and assigned McCain to the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal in December 1966, which was patrolling the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. In Spring 1967, the Forrestal was assigned to join the Operation Rolling Thunder bombing campaign against North Vietnam".
"McCain lost his fourth plane on board the Forrestal on July 29, 1967 when a rocket inadvertently slammed into his bomb laden jet. McCain escaped, but the explosions that followed killed 134 sailors. McCain was transferred from the badly damaged Forrestal to the USS Oriskany".

While I'm sure this has been a blast for McBush to show his famliy album and pictures of uncle Bob and all, and to know about his English teacher, but He sure seems to say I was misunderstood quite a lot. If he says 100 years..thats what was said. When he says the economy isn't his strong suit...then I guess thats the truth. When he says it is not the governments role to help in this crisis....I think he means it. Quite frankly, if he had a plan for the economy, don't you think he would be touting it by now? Jeez...The economy is in the toilet and he's showing us pictures of uncle Bob.

factcheck.org, the AP, and the Annenberg Center have all lambasted Obama for this blatant lie. He's told the most lies of any of the candidates in this campaign and that includes "we landed under sniper fire."

Jeffy,
So which is it, is McCain lying now or was he lying earlier in the Repub primary?
Here's one of the many times that John W McBush said he'd like to stay in Iraq for 100 years....maybe 1000 years:

Did Scarborough, Carleson, Buchanan or any of the other Republican hacks on MSNBC every morning ask Sen. McCain about his confusing Sunni and Shia, Iran and Al Qaeda THREE TIMES while overseas?
Did they ask McCain about recently getting basic facts wrong about the Iraq ceasefire?
Did they ask McCain about his statement that he doesn't know anything about the economy?
Did they ask McCain why he thinks it appropriate to joke about bombing Iran?
Just curious.

Listen to Grandpa Munster McCain, he's already flip-flopping on his 100 years in Iraq statement...which he repeated almost 100 times in front of thousands of people with VIDEO CAMERA'S!!!
Flippity, floppity, flip, flop. Just like a fish on the deck of a boat, John McCain is gasping for the life of his campaign. Knowing full well that tying his campaign to staying in Iraq and the “success” of the “surge” (quick, McCain, explain what that means!) and that the majority of Americans just aren’t willing to buy it, McCain executes a perfect “cut and run” from his earlier statement of staying in Iraq for 100 years.
"By the way, that reminds me of that “100 year thing”. My friends, the war will be over soon. The war, for all intents and purposes, although the insurgency will go on for years and years and years. But it will be handled by the Iraqis, not by us", McCain said
Huh? The war will be “over soon”??? Mission Accomplished redux? But the insurgency will go on. But that’s not a war. But the Iraqis will handle it. Aren’t the insurgents Iraqis too? Can anyone make heads or tails of this ridiculous excuse of a back pedal?

No he didn't. Repeating a lie does not make it true, John e.
You repeated the lie by continuing to mischaracterize the statement McCain made in new Hampshire in January.
The Columbia Journalism Review , not exactly a known hotbed of right-wingery, concludes that "Obama is seriously misleading voters -- if not outright lying to them -- about exactly what McCain said." FactCheck.org's characterization of Obama's attacks as a "serious distortion to the point of rank falsehood."
These are respected media watchdogs saying this. Not anrgry little basement dwellers like John E. Buit don't take it from me, take it from The Columbia Journalism Review: http://www.cjr.org/campaign_desk/the_us_iraq_and_100_years.php?page=all
Or AP. They've also corrected Obama, who has emerged as the campaign's lying champion. Not surprising really since he told every citizen of Illinois he wouldn't run for president and was committed to serving out his first senate term.
To quote the CJR, "if Obama is going to portray McCain as dangerously bellicose, he should not do so by distorting McCain’s words. The press should forcefully call him out on it each time."

Jeffy,
Which part of "LET'S STAY IN IRAQ FOR 100 YEARS" did you not hear McCain say?!?!
Video doesn't lie, Jeffy but McCain does:

PS - Jeffy,
That fact that you can find some rightwing media hacks who say McCain never said it doesn't surprise me nor does it not change the fact that not only did McCain say it he also repeated it several times even expanding his 100 years in Iraq theme to saying 1000 years in Iraq would be fine with him.
So just how is John W McBush going to pay for this occupation that he has planned, anyway?!?!
Posted by: John E | April 3, 2008 6:54 PM
John E,
He's going to pay for it by making the McBush tax cuts permanent, yet again cutting taxes more while going into more war.

Look at the other guys. Anyone willing to sign up for 4 years of Hillbama, other than the terrorists, the global warming nuts, the anti-American industry zealots, the opponents of world leading health care, and those who would open the flood gates to illegals.
