Republican John McCain is making a list.
A long one. Of potential running mates.
McCain, speaking with reporters aboard his campaign bus today, also spoke by telephone with radio talk show host Don Imus. McCain said his staff has started compiling a list of running mates and having them vetted.
The list holds about 20 names, he said – not in a sharing mood.
“It’s every name imaginable,’’ he said.
Really? Jeb Bush? Condoleezza Rice? Jesse Ventura?
“I'm aware of the enhanced importance of this issue given my age," McCain, 71, quipped, and he hopes to make his pick before the Republican National Convention opens in Minneapolis in early September. “I’d like to get it done as early as possible.’’

McCain's VP pick needs populist streak more than corporate, when the economy is going down. Romney therefore not a good idea. And Rice is too connected to poor foreign policy. Last, not Lieberman - too uncharismatic, puts you to sleep.
Who is good? Perhaps: Jack Kemp, Mike Huckabee, Elizabeth Dole, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Christopher Cox, Colin Powell, Rob Portman, Victor Davis Hanson, Chuck Hagel.
The best VP for McCain: Obama
