Every email that arrives these days from Laura Bush, or from John Kerry, it seems, carries a fundraising appeal with it.

So it is not surprising that the e-missive from Michelle Obama, wife of the Illinois senator and presidential candidate, Barack Obama, should carry a fundraising appeal. Yet, wrapped as it is, in a commemoration of the Rev. Martin Luther King. Jr., on this anniversary of his assassination, there is a certain jarring aspect to this campaign dispatch.

"Today is the 40th anniversary of the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,'' Michelle Obama writes, "and I want to share a video that reveals how far we've come and how much this campaign owes to Dr. King's legacy. Students at a high school in the Bronx, who had no real interest in their government, have found new hope. They were surprised by their own excitement and engagement, but to me, they embody so many reasons why Barack and I decided to get into this campaign.''

At the bottom of this long letter from the Obama campaign sits a "Donate'' button. The email also invites readers to share the inspirational video of the Bronx high schoolers speaking of race -- displayed above -- with friends. And, after the YouTube video is dispatched, another page appears on the computer screen, with an option for a monthly subscription in contributions to the Obama campaign:

"Thank you for sharing this video... Now make a donation.

"This movement for change would not be possible without the support of people of all races, ages, and backgrounds. This campaign doesn't take money from PACs or lobbyists. We depend on grassroots supporters like you giving only what you can afford.

"Support this campaign now by making a secure online donation using the form below. If you would like to make a monthly recurring donation, click here.''

PS - Jeffy,

You Republic Party weenies must be scared to death of facing Obama this fall, I see where you've been twisting and contorting yourself into finding ways to show that Clinton is somehow still viable in this race.

BwaHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

I thought the Obama-rama campaign wasn't about race? Overall, I would say this campaign fundraiser is pretty darn crass!

Lil Johnny Ducksnort,

Being proud of your heritage and having a fundraiser because of it is somehow offensive?

Yep, the angry old doughy white guy Republic Party members will do anything to start a race war.

Amazing now she gets all "loving up to America"..I thought she ahd only been happy with our Country ONE DAY!!!..Embarrssing what some people will do for money and in the name of MLK. SAD!!!....Go home and bake cookies.........................

I love the smell of desperation in the morning

It smells like......

VICTORY for President Obama!!!

Again, do you even know what race baiting is? Other than copying and pasting the accusation from your Obama website you haven't shown you do?

I provided you a post from that very day that showed how Obama supporters accuse anyone who's critical of him of being racist. Defend or denounce that... you weeny.

Everyone knows you're the one doing the race baiting.

ChimpCo=John E=Monica Lewinsky

Mr. Silva...
You make some interesting statements. But a few questions remain:

1) Where did this email originate? (you make it sound like Michelle herself hit the send button just for you)

2) Why don't you post the letter in its entiriety? Possibly a link to the letter?

3) Googling the "News" section under Michelle Obama's name, your story seems to the only one on this particular subject. Is this a SCOOP?

All I can say it is so WRONG, so insulting to use this subject for there own benefit (pun is place here on purpose!)

Spare me the BS college Republican Jeffy,

Everytime you or one of your sock puppet pals "MJ" come on here and play the Rev Wright card you are race baiting. You know it and that's why it irratates you so much when I call you out on it.

Do they teach you that stuff in PA school systems?

Little cranky day Catholic SchoolGirl John E???

Bad day on the Egg McMuffin shift?

First of all, Americans (White, Black, Mixed, Hispanic, Latino or whatever people want to be called these days... We all have the right to speak about anything we want and according to the USA we can so anything to get our point across and raisings funds is a way to do it. How dare anyway speak of how MLK is being used to raise money... The goverment solicits funds all the time in the name of MLK... M. Obama said what she said and asked for what she wanted. If MLK was alive today he too would ask for funding.. The saying goes, "you have not because you ask not" Look that up in the BIBLE... something that MLK stood for... OBAMA has a dream and his dream takes raising money.... Stop using a man who America jailed and killed as a way to past judgement... How dare "America"!

More and more Obama is showing his true colors---and as Lynn Samuels said, them colors ain't Black!

IF Michelle was hawking a donation here: http://www.gridirongreats.org/DonationPage.html THEN it'd be something in the spirit of Martin Luther King...it's a SHAME that fans have to take care of the old-time players instead of the super cash rich NFL!!!

But it's all about getting 'bama in the White House, isn't it?

Come on everyone...Clinton does the same thing. Does a campaign run on air? No, they need money and Sen. Clinton and Sen. McCain are not doing so well in that dept. Thats Republicans for making OBAMA the center of attention....we love it and we will that you for making him the PRESIDENT :) OBAMA 08' FIRED UP and READY TO GO!!

Mr. Silva,

If you are going to start a mess, at least be man enough to include the entire letter instead of cherry-picking. You state "At the bottom of this long letter from the Obama campaign sits a "Donate'' button." A donate button is at the bottom of every email that comes from the campaign. That button is probably very similar to the links found on emails from the Clinton and McCain campaigns. As for being long, only if you suffer from ADD.

What exactly is jarring? It seems your piece is missing a paragraph or two. Please clarify. Does the donation page offend you? It is a standard form. Are you upset because it didn't say pretty please? Just took a look at Hillary's and her donation form (aka contribute) looks the same. And her main page
has 3 links to get you there. OMG! John McCain is using the same form! Oh, by the way McCain has a giant contribute button link to the left of his "Honoring the Dream" page which contains his Memphis remarks. (Repubs you can begin your spin here about the tastefulness of this - I believe the some of the words you used were classless, pretty darn crass, and SAD!!!)

Here is the letter in its entirety:

Today is the 40th anniversary of the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and I want to share a video that reveals how far we've come and how much this campaign owes to Dr. King's legacy.

Students at a high school in the Bronx, who had no real interest in their government, have found new hope. They were surprised by their own excitement and engagement, but to me, they embody so many reasons why Barack and I decided to get into this campaign.

It's truly moving to see young people inspired by a political leader -- someone who gives them hope and reminds them that they can be anything they want to be if they work hard.

Watch what these kids have to say about politics and race in this country:

Much has changed in this country since Dr. King's death, and thanks to his life and work we have taken critical strides towards racial equality.

The simple fact that Barack is running a competitive campaign for President is a direct result of Dr. King's legacy -- and this movement for change would be impossible without the support of people of all races, ages, and backgrounds.

I remember back in December of 2006, a group of us were discussing the possibility of Barack running for President. And as you might have read, I was hesitant about the idea.

But then Barack started talking about why he really wanted to do this -- to bring people together and to change the tone of the way we talk to each other in this country. He talked about the need for people to be inspired by their leaders, and the importance of leadership to chart a different course. He talked about Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy, and their passion to challenge a new generation and provide them with role models.

Barack promised that as a candidate and as President he would do everything he could to bring new people to the table. He shared his desire to reach out to our neglected inner cities, to strive to be a role model for young people, and to connect with people who are not involved in politics -- those who feel their voices haven't been heard, those who have been left behind, and those who have been turned off by all the petty bickering in recent years.

We can change that, by standing on the shoulders of folks like Dr. King who came before us.

Watching these students who are excited about their own role in politics for the first time, and watching Barack as he strives to live up to the challenges Dr. King made possible, I am truly touched.

I hope you'll watch this video and share that feeling with your friends and family:

Thank you,

Michelle Obama

Really classy. Marking the 40th anniversary of an American hero with a crass solicitaation for money.

Classy, Michelle. Classy.

I see MS.O has time to make video but not make MEMPHIS.rEMEMBER obama asked the state of the black union in NEW ORLEANS to allow her to speak for him when he could't make it why he didn't do it this time? maybe a video asking for $$$ owed to the legacy of M.L.K.was easier
