Michelle Obama sat down with Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, last night.
“Everybody knows you and your husband are elitists,’’ Colbert told the wife of the Democratic candidate for president and senator from Illinois. “Tell me about your elite upbringing on the South Side of Chicago.’’
“We had four spoons,’’ she replied. “There were spoons.’’
“So that tag still sticks,’’ Colbert said.
“And then my father got a raise at the plant,’’ she said, “and we had five spoons.’’
Then the host of the Comedy Central show got a little mushy with Michelle Obama, with Colbert saying that people have asked him what sort of first lady she would be – “I think you’d be Jackie O.,’’ the host told his guest. “I hope I am not out of place in saying this: You are a very good looking lady. Do you think your husband would be ok with me saying that?’’
He’d be “a little ruffled,’’ she said.
Ruffled enough to come on the show? Colbert asked, launching into song: “L…. is for the way you look at me…’’
“He has a better voice,’’ Obama told Colbert.

While this important news is reported at the Swamp USA Today has a list of the non-lobbyist lobbyists that have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to Obama's campaign.
After Al Gore and John Kerry, Republicans had to be wondering, Could Democrats possibly nominate yet another out-of-touch elitist? With Obama, Democrats appear to be responding with a resounding "Yes, we can."

Colbert is in the bag for anybody but HIlary--that's long been obvious.
and he's still funny.
But--Michelle sure could buy a lot more spoons once her hubby sold out the Chicago neighborhood is was supposed to represent (guns, public housing) with the Rezko/Daley crap.
Gotta hit the road!

Ick. This woman is like fingernails on a chalkboard.
Despite being the poster child for privilege and opportunity in America, she is a chronic malcontent and complainer. That shows a profound lack of class.

Now that is a strong lady with integrity. I would vote for her for president any day over the Clinton's.

She neglects to mention that they were silver sppons, however.

It's absolutely ridiculous that "elitist" is the label applied to the Obamas when the word "bitter" escapes Barack's lips but one time in a 16-month primary battle, considering the Obamas are the only one of the three families that could be in the White House that don't have $100 million+.
If Obama is somehow "fooling" us, if somehow he's a "fraud", would he really still be in this race? I've been a fan since 2004, but even a year ago I would have put his chances at maybe 1 in 10. He is where he is because the American people are not stupid; nothing sinks a candidate faster than the aura of fake.
This guy is the real deal, and he is wading through this primary swamp with remarkable ease.
Barack Obama for President! Come on, Pennsylvania, let's end it!

I liked John Stewart's bit on the elitist tag. I WANT an elite president. I don't want just some "C" average schmo who can ride a bike and cut brush. I want to elect the very best guy available to run our country. He absolutely SHOULD be a member of the elite.
Just look at our history. The first Washington elitist in office was Washington. He did such a nice job that they named the capitol city after him and built him a big frickin' monument. Adams was no slouch. Jefferson probably wasn't a guy you'd see much at the local tavern having a shot and a beer with the boys. Instead, he wrote the Declaration of Independence and was a horticulturist, statesman, architect, archaeologist, paleontologist, author, and inventor. That's exactly the kind of guy we need to elect.

Yes we can...unless like Jeff suggests we find a gutter rat to run for president. What type of fool would think ANY of the candidates couldn't be considered "elitist"? McBush and his 100 million trust fund baby, or the Clintons? Please! What a joke.....quite simply I can't understand what people find so wrong with an elite? One mans ceiling is another mans floor.

The press should latch onto this critical issue and spend huge amounts of TV time discussing spoons. Maybe Chris Matthews could use it as a topic on his show. I'll bet she's not counting the serving spoons or the plastic spoons. She's probably hiding the fact that they had a ladle too! I'm disappointed Colbert didn't agressively question her on her spoon count.

Michelle Obama should have gotten her money the true all american way like Cindy McCain. She should have inherited it.
Posted by: Michael | April 16, 2008 1:57 PM
We need a down to earth every day woman for First lady like Cindy McCain.
She knows what it means to be poor. One day the check from her trust fund was delayed and she couldn't go shopping.
She knows what it's like to do without. One day she couldn't find anyone to give her painkillers.
She knows what it's like to work hard. She watches the maid do it every day.
She knows how important family is. She destroyed one to get her man.

Tom O...exactly right. If you talked about an elite guard in military terms, these same fools would be fawning all over them.
Posted by: bill "Hussein" r. | April 16, 2008 2:24 PM
I can't think of any position that is more intrinsically elitist than being a military officer. Most of the people you deal with are required to salute you when they see you, call you "Sir", and do whatever you say without question.
I'm not critcizing the military, I'm just pointing out how silly it is for Mccain and his supporters to call any other candidate elitist. The military is anything but an egalitarian organization.
Posted by: Sir, Yes SIR! | April 16, 2008 3:22 PM
Tom's right. We've always had wealthy people--who usually got their money the crooked way. More on that later.
But given Obama's racist nutcase minister, his sell out to crooks while he was SUPPOSED to be HELPING people in Chicago--C'mon. Rezko= Tony Soprano, kids. Wake up and smell the SPOILER.
And now the flag pinning like he's a sorority sister, the day after Camp Obama went trolling to try to find 'staging' of Hilary's people on the street ad (no staging--just one guy who moved and was attacked by Obamaniacs because--they can, since he's white).
sick of the double standard. IF he's at the top of the ticket, get ready to say John McCain.
I'm gonna be sick. And I gotta pull that Ricotta pie outta the oven too.

Why wait? It's obviously not the issues you vote for.....
Posted by: bill "Hussein" r. | April 16, 2008 6:24 PM
Carmela,
You and I don't agree on much, so I'm glad you think I'm right.
I liked Rev. Wright's sermons, but that's because I read the complete text that the Trib published. He said some things I don't agree with, but I think it's hard to argue with his message that violence begets violence.
Rezko = Tony Soprano? In his dreams maybe.
Flag pins are an issue? Who cares?

The spoon humor was definitely needed! For those who don't know about the south side of Chicago - Michelle was pretty right-on with the comment. No, it wasn't like some areas with no spoons or some with a dozen spoons. We sometimes borrowed dish detergent from our neighbors to wash those spoons. And while my parents did own a home, it was done with hard work. We grew up knowing the value of work and an education. We took out college loans. I'm a doctor today (and without a best selling book) I am still paying my student loans. Elitist, I think not. Bottom line, people that don't like a candidate are going to jump on every single word and every single act. This just goes to show you, Obama can (and will) handle himself and all the controversies to come (and there will be many) in the general election.

Only in 21st century America do the elitists come from the South Side of Chicago, and the salt of the Earth Joe Six Packs come from the North Shore, Gold Coast Republican bedroom communities.
America, you need to get on to Ebay and bid on a clue.

Dr, B,
Nice posting. I would only add; The general election is already on, yet the two Dem candies are still at each others throats.
We may be losing right this very minute. The 'elitist' slur thrown at Bama by Hills is a Rove tactic. How will Bama and Hills deny it once the race with McBush begins in earnest?
Posted by: C.Morris | April 16, 2008 8:33 PM
Sir, yes sir!
Right you are. Anyone that has served knows this;
1. Field grade officers look down on company grade officers.
2. CG officers look down on NCO's
3. NCO's look down on E4 and below
4. E4's hate 'lifers'
5. All enlisted personnel dislike officers.
It's all top down of course, of necessity. 'Elitist' is a perfect word for it. I remember in basic picking weeds for a generals wife. Yi, yi, yi. Talk about licensed and privileged.
