Rep. Jack Murtha, 75, says Sen. John McCain, 71, is too old to be president.
Murtha,a Pennsylvania Democrat, is backing Sen. Hillary Clinton, 60.
Murtha spoke up about the presumptive Republican nominee's age today while stumping for Clinton in her contest with Sen. Barack Obama, 46.
"I've served with seven presidents," Murtha told a union audience in Pennsylvania. "When they come in, they all make mistakes. They all get older...This one guy running is about as old as me," he said to laughter and applause. "Let me tell you something, it's no old man's job."
"All I can tell you,'' McCain replied, in an interview with John King on CNN's The Situation Room today, "is that I admire and respect Jack Murtha... Speak for yourself, Jack. I’m doing fine. Thanks.''
If elected, McCain would be the oldest president at election, 72. Ronald Reagan became president at 69 and served until just shy of his 78th birthday. McCain's own rivals in the GOP race had not made an issue of his age.
“These are nonsense attacks," said Tucker Bounds, a spokesman for the McCain camp.
McCain, who normally addresses the subject of his age with jokes -- about being "older than dirt,'' or wearing "more scars than Frankenstein'' -- suggests simply that people take a look at his mother. She is 96.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I don't agree with Murtha. I don't believe age is really an issue. However, I don't believe any candidate who would sing a little ditty of Bomb Bomb Iran, should ever be president.

Nobody cares what the porkmaster thinks. They're just wondering how long he'll be able to stay out of jail.

I'M NOT A WOMAN, OR A MAN YET, I'M NOT EVEN HUMAN YET, I'M STILL IN MY "EMBROYNIC" STAGE
I WILL NOT HAVE MY "ATTORNEY GENERAL" LOOK INTO CRIMES COMMITTED BY THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION, THEY "CREATED ME TOO"
I WILL NOT HAVE DIPLOMACY IN THE MIDDLE EAST, AS MY "MILITIA" ISN'T TRAINED LONG ENOUGH TO COME HOME AND INSERT "MARSHALL LAW" OR MY "MARSHALL IMMIGRATION LAW"

LESS AMERICA THOUGH.

I agree with Murtha.
John W McCain can't tell the difference between the Sunni's and Shiites in Iraq yet he claims we need to stay there for 100 years, he talks about the economy like someone who failed freshman algebra class and he's had cancer twice leaving him with a huge swollen jaw...
Before McCain goes any farther he should be required to pass a nationally televised physical and mental well-being check-up....I'm pretty sure him and his $500 million dollar wife can afford it.

How about Hillary. She's 60 and has never released her medical records, just like her husband. Murtha seems to have forgotten that some of the most effective world leaders were older than McCain, such as Churchill, Adenauer, Baruch, Golda Meier, and Charles DeGaulle among others. What would the world be like today without them?
Posted by: Damen | April 16, 2008 3:40 PM
A vote for McCain is a vote for World War III and an Economic Depression of apocalyptic proportions. I don't dislike McCain personally, but this country is going down the tubes if he's elected.

Murtha must be extremely jealous that another man his age has a greater chance at the Oval Office. I was surprised to read that Murtha is the same age as McCain. Murtha appears quite ready to use a walker and oxygen tank as compared to John McCain.

Why won't McCain release his health records?

Does this mean that Rep. Murtha is retiring after his current term? If not, he should keep his mouth shut. According to the US Constitution, age is not a contraindication to being a president, unless you are under 40!
Posted by: Steve H | April 16, 2008 3:50 PM
Lets see, John Adams who was our 2nd President, lived past 90 years, and our 3rd and 4th Presidents both lived past 80 years. And this was when medical care was not as good, and Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security only paid 1 to 3 dollars a month. I think Murtha is either too old to "think clearly" or is willing to say ANYTHING to get a Democratic (BOY ! is THAT a misnomer ! SUPERdelegates are you listening ?) Party candidate elected.

Perhaps Murtha is too old, and even some 65 year olds may be too old, but everyone ages differently. McCain has a younger body younger than my 56 year old husband (who is diabetic and genetically, his family ages faster than others).
Murtha has said something that to me is discrimination. Race, gender, sex, ethnicity all are not good reasons to hold a good candidate back.

I think Mr. McCain should be intensely physically and mentally examined because he has infirmities that could make him ineligible to hold office once elected. As to a thorough mental examination, he cannot leave VietNam behind and we do not need that mentality in dealing with this new Viet Nam called Iraq. Lord help us if he selects Condolezza Rice as his running mate because if he dies, we'll get a repeat of the George W. Bush administration. Mr. McCain is not far removed from this administration, but Ms. Rice cannot think for herself and her demeanor exudes this. As for Mrs. Clinton, at 60, she is also climbing on being too old to effectively hold office. At 60, most of us are thinking of our retirement and what we can do aside from what we did when we were younger. Let's give a closer look to Mr. Obama. He is truly a clean sheet and would give us the best opportunity for real change.

Murtha is right. McCain is like Mr. Magoo old and out of touch, bouncing the big dented car all over, shaking his fist out the window at all the young whipper snappers in his way. We need fresh new ideas. History shows the repeated failures of the GOP and McCain is the oldest of the GOP.

I think the age limit should be 75 years old. Once you hit 75, you should retire. That goes for all politicians. When You are to old to think, who is setting your agendas? Mr. Murtha has a point.
Posted by: rith | April 16, 2008 4:23 PM
Murtha needs to retire. Another do-nothing politican.

When you have a man who answers real crucial issues with jokes, you know he is losing it. He knows nothing about economics, nothing about foreign issues, a lot about the Beach Boys, and continues to live in a time warp making us relive along with him his five years in a POW camp. I'm afraid he will wake up one day and not be able to distinguish the Viet Nam War and the Iraq War, and press that red button and blow us all to pieces thinking he just escaped from that 40 year old POW camp. BE afraid, be very afraid if this angry man gets into office.

McCain is probably pushing the upper boundary of age for what is a very demanding position. I do have doubts as to if he will make it out in good health if he wins both a first and a second term Certainly, in the case of Reagan there it seems that he wasn't quite well by his second term, even though he lived another ten years. I think McCain will start off in good health, but I worry about what he'll be like in eight years, particularly given the severity of his war injuries. I think anyone thinking about voting for McCain should look carefully at his running mate as a likely president, to be on the safe side. We cannot risk having another Quale or Cheney as our next Vice President if McCain wins. The Republican VP needs to be younger, experienced, and enthusiastic.

Murtha is an idiot; Clinton and Obama dont benefit from any of his remarks. McCain has proven his strenght during Vietman and was held as a prisoner of war. What has Murtha done for this country besides critizes others; he didnt serve 7 presidents, he lived to be part of history during the last 7 Presidents; weak individuals recount their history. McCain has gained the amercian respect and has a hot women for his age.

Murtha will forget what he said by tommorrow....
Posted by: todd | April 16, 2008 5:05 PM
This is a really touchy issue and probably only Murtha could bring it up and get away with it. I would have considered voting for McCain in 2000, but I think his time has come and gone. Yes, you can find people like Daniel Schorr, 92 year old senior news analyst for NPR, who seem to defy the laws of aging. But watching older people trying to learn new technology or even embrace new ideas makes it clear that older brains have limitations. Could that make you a lesser president? I think so.
Posted by: Michael | April 16, 2008 5:10 PM
Since when in this country is one not free to voice one's opinions? If Murtha believes McCain is too old, that's his opinion and he's free to express it. This isn't news. The voter's will decide.

"What has Murtha done for this country besides critizes others?"
He served as a Marine in Vietnam, winning a Bronze star with Valor device, and two Purple Hearts. He remained in the Reserves until 1990, having also recieved the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.

Three years that separate the age Reagan was elected at, and that of Sen. McCain - considering that SnObama thinks that Reagan changed the trajectory of America, and that 'change' is what so many pundits and politicians think is needed, given McCain's maverick record and leadership in getting landmark legislation passed, perhaps he is just the right age to change the trajectory of a country that is fundamentally headed in the wrong direction.
Murtha is used to all the earmarks and corrupted relationship with the military contractors who fund his campaign - it is time for his old kind of politics to be put to rest - of that there is no doubt.
Murtha can voice his opinion - but who cares what he thinks?
Considering that Murtha is in a party that is seeking to challenge America to rid itself of its bias against those of a different race or gender, it is amazing that age is something they think is appropriate to discriminate against.

The things that come out of people's mouths ... McCain is too old to be President, Obama is not black enough for some but too black to be President for others, Clinton is too female to be President ... the only requirements are that the President be 35 years of age and not previously a citizen of another country. There is no requirement for medical testing, nor an upper age limit, nor race, nor gender, nor marital status, nor previous military service, nor releasing medical records, nor releasing tax returns, nor years of public service, nor having a law degree from a prestigious university, nor having held elective office, nor having previous management experience, nor be pro-this or anti-that, nor being able to bowl higher than 37. I think the only other requirement is being so obsessed with obtaining power that you will say or do whatever it takes to get it and hold it.

What's the big deal, Murtha is too stupid to be a senator, but that doesn't seem to stop him?
Posted by: BDD | April 16, 2008 5:50 PM
I agree with some above. It is time for Murtha to step down. He opens mouth and puts foot in too many times and is a disgrace to our military also. As far as McCain he is a vibrant man considering all he has gone through. I do think he is the better of the three candidates. Woe is us if Obama or Hill get elected. Hold on to your money as they are out there to take it.
I do think it is time for the people to start demanding term limits for our congress. There are too many that are stagnating in their chairs. Twelve years should be long enough. They all are seem to be corrupted by that time.

My 72 year old father has said the same thing. He can't tell the difference between Shiites and Sunni either, but he didn't have to dump his first wife and marry some kid my age to be able to afford to live comfortably. Hey--let's elect my Dad! At least he understands economics.
Posted by: Cheryl | April 16, 2008 5:54 PM
He's still living, so he's not too old. The problem with McCain isn't his age. It's his support for Bush policies like pre-emptive war and torture.
Posted by: Tom O | April 16, 2008 6:28 PM
I like the fact he's older. There's a lot less time left to pay him compensation once he's out of office. It's a bargain compared to Obama. And, yes, I am considering-- should both methods end up in worse case senario; leaving or staying in Iraq, f-s up Iraq and Iran.
That's alright, the babybooms are all getting older, I can't wait to have all of them overburden the medical system while making it mandatory for all of them to retirer at 60 becuse they tell too good of a tale.
Young people of America one side will have you commit your life and wallet to 100 years war, and the other side will have you commit your life and wallet to their medical costs-- with not much to go around to return the favor.
In both cases I'm seeing abortions banned as a result of people shortage.
I think people should be elegible for US military service until 75. It will solve many problems.

It is a shame that some people who comment on issues, display a "gutter"attitude and make offensive comments about individuals.
I admire those who take a stance on an issue or person with a certain amount of "class"

I don't think McCain is too old to serve as President, but I'm still not voting for him.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion ... Unless, apparently, you're a Democrat.
Bobby & Mary, how is Murtha's distinguised military service a disgrace? Obviously because he's a Democrat ...
"Hold on to your wallets ..."
Seriously ... with the way we've spent ourselves into a hole under Bush, we have nothing left in our wallets. Thanks Repulicants.

By the time Reagan was as old as McCain would be at the end of his term, Ron was already on the downward slide toward drooling on the White House china. I'm not that eager to go thru that again. Also - I still believe that McCain could be damaged - emotionally - by his Hanoi ordeal. Up to now, he's had the cake job of a legislator. Stick him in the WH pressure cooker and god knows how he'll react.

Well if it is someone who knows about failing freshman algerbra, it would be John E.
Steve H - Under 35 years old.
Danny P from Long Island - wasn't aware we had Soc Sec, Medicare, and Medicaid when John Adams was alive.
Luke - Murtha peaked with his military service - since then he has be unidicted ABSCAM co-conspiritor of a Congressman.
BDD - Murtha is just a Congressman, not a senator.
