ANDERSON, Ind. -- Sen. Barack Obama on Saturday called a proposal by Sen. John McCain for a federal gas tax holiday the "latest scheme" from the likely Republican presidential nominee.
The Illinois Democrat suggested such a tax break would weaken the nation's funding stream for highway and bridge infrastructure, potentially putting lives at risk.
"It will save you about $25," Obama said, presumably citing a three-month savings for average consumers. "Remember that bridge in Minneapolis?"
The charge against McCain came three minutes after Obama said he was striving to stay above the fray.
"One of the things that we've got to do is to bring this country together and stop being distracted by, you know, back and forth, tit-for-tat bickering," he said. "I have been trying to resist this in this campaign and I will continue to resist it when I am president of the United States."
The McCain campaign did not see it that way. "I'm sure he didn't call gas tax relief a 'scheme' when he voted for it in the Illinois Senate," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

Comments
Just because he voted for it doesn't mean he's not an idiot. By the way, Hillary also supports this ludicrous bill.
Gas prices are higher, but people are complaining even as they fill up their Escalades (500/month payment) and then drive them at 14mpg, damaging our freeways with their much heavier frame (both the owner and the vehicle).
Cutting the 75 cents or whatever it is will not help anyone in the long run, but may encourage more driving, damaging the roads faster with less chance of affording repairs.

Obama was in the Illinois Senate years ago McSame, back when things weren't as bad as they are now, before your party screwed over the economy
Posted by: axt113 | April 27, 2008 1:31 AM
Also the gas tax holiday is a scheme, it will add to the defict and inflame fuel demand, meaning higher prices and more government debt

Once again, we get gimmicks for solutions, from that " elitist " Party, the Republicans. They can't take the bull by its horns and tell the Oil Companies to roll back their prices, to the pre-Bush administration, when prices were far more acceptable!! Don't hold your breath, though, this administration is not known for considering the needs of the country, only of the Republican agenda!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

"The charge against McCain came three minutes after Obama said he was striving to stay above the fray."
That sounds alot like a dig at Obama. Obama was talking about gas and gas prices when he was talking about McCain...talking about the issues. As he should.
"Staying above the fray" doesn't mean not talking about issues.
Gimme a break.

John McSame-as-Bush vs. John McSame-as-Bush
on the economy:
~January 10, 2008 - McCain
"And by the way, I don’t believe we’re headed into a recession. I believe the fundamentals of this economy are strong, and I believe they will remain strong."
~February 3 - McCain:
"I think if we’re going to be in some shaky times - and by the way, I believe the fundamentals of America’s economy [are] still strong."
~March 3 - McCain:
"I don’t know technically whether we’re going into a recession or not, but I believe in the long term, our fundamentals are strong."
~April 14 - McCain:
"Are we in a recession?" McCain finally admitted, "I certainly think so," but then tried to moderate his comment by adding, that the word "recession" is "really kind of a technical term used by people who are economists and make these kinds of judgment."
I didn't think it was possible but John W McCain my very well be dumber than Bush Jr,

John W McCain on the economy - continued:
April 17 - McCain:
McCain said last night that Americans perhaps feel they are better off than they were when Bush took office because "millions of jobs have been created" since then. So therefore, McCain said, "You could make an argument that there’s been great progress economically over that period of time"
April 25 - McCain:
When host Meredith Viera asked McCain whether Americans are "better off, by any means, than we were eight years ago," McCain replied, "Oh, no. No."
Yep, he's dumber than Bush:

Unfortunately, $25.00 is now half a tank of gas for me. When the GOP stormed the WH in 2000 it cost me approximately $12.00 to FILL my tank. $25.00 may be a mere pittance to Obama but that is gas and groceries to the rest of us.

I agree with the Junior Senator from Illinois about the spurioius savings to be achieved.
Far better if the Senators running would ALL go after the Oil Barons for all the taxes not paid since the 1970s.
But I do object to the patronizing 'tone' of a person who certainly must know the position he shares at the top of the ticket is 'fake'--Repubs voted him up in Iowa when Edwards seemed destined to beat McCain soundly. And there WERE shenanigans in Minnesota.
His phrase about ending 'tit for tat bickering' distorts and distracts from the fact that this man NEVER endured the sort of vetting the Clintons did to make it to the national level he now enjoys. (And they did with a smile--HIllary especially--and enjoyed much greater public popularity as a result.)
Now that the journalists know what quesitons to ask, and what questions the public DEMANDS they ask about him--he runs and runs and runs away from all but a selected handful of journalists whom he hand picks.
Heck-he even told Carol Marin to basically shut up when he finally sat down at Trib HQ and 'told all' about Rezko.
It is also very very telling that the group recreate 68 mentions Obama's NAME on it.
Is this an attempt to intimidate Hillary with bad PR if he doesn't get his way? A way to intimidate left leaning women who do not support a man who rose by trouncing Alice Palmer--a LONG time, REAL community activist?

What were gas prices in 2000? They were $1.25-$1.80. They had been like that for like 15-20 years. Of course, the gas tax holiday would have been fine then. But now gas it almost $4.00 a gallon and on top of that we are in a recession and on top of that we have a war going on. This gas tax holiday will not work and it doesn't make sense to do it now.

Speaking of Dumb, JohnEEE-Boy, why do you keep calling him John W. McCain? His middle name is Sidney, so his middle initial is S.
And, BTW - we are not in a recession, regardless of whether someone tripped up McCain on the issue. A recession, by definition, consists of two (2) quarters (thats six months) of economic contraction. We have still had economic growth throughout all of 2007, even though the economy is slowing down. The figures for the first quarter of 2008 aren't in yet, so we don't even know if our economy has stopped growing or started to contract. The bottom line is, nevertheless, that we may be headed for a recession, but we aren't there yet.
It's doomsayers like you that will help scare us into a recession by making everyone too afraid to invest.

Okay, Don, I’m game. Please tell me where in the Constitution it says the federal government has the power or right to fix or freeze commodity prices. I didn’t realize we had a command economy like the one in the former Soviet Union. In any event, the power you suggest the government exercise isn’t in my copy of the Constitution.
These oil prices – by the way – are largely the result of inflation, lower global output and increased demand. The federal government doesn’t have the power to tell India or China not to purchase as much oil as they do. Nor does the federal government have the power to force the OPECers to pump more oil. Bush asked for greater oil output from our so-called allies in the middle east, but he failed.
Furthermore, the inflation is largely the result of bad money policies from the FRB that have traversed several administrations, both Democrat and Republican, as well as the near-ancient practice of monetizing debt.
And, no, it isn’t just the Republicans who are spending this country into debt either, thus requiring even more debt monetization. The Democrats added all the really expensive social welfare programs long ago; programs for which we are still paying through the nose. Even more recently, the Democrats have voted to maintain deficit spending, except, this time around, a large body of Republicans have helped them along.
So don’t you dare blame the Republicans for all of this. There is plenty of blame to go around for members of all political parties. Just look at all the new spending programs promised by the Democrats running for office. Either they are not dealing well with economic reality, or they are bent on breaking us. Take your pick.

Look at the latest with Blagojevich. Collusion with Republicans within the Illinois combine to get rid of Fitzpatrick. That would help Daley.
If Obama is the candidate in the fall--EXPECT the john kasses of the media to go after this.
What will we find?
And where are the academics weighing in on this?
Only in the bag for Obama Eric Michael Dyson.
That's because academics must fear the IL 2003 legislature's passage of the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act.
IT MUZZLES Academics in Illinois who don't agree with Barack Obama.
And it sure seems like the bloggers for his campaign are trying to find out identities of people on the blogs.
More shameful--one of the sponsors was not just Emil Jones--
but Barack Obama.

When you go to a christen church for 20 years, you’re Christian
When you go to a Jewish Temples for 20 years, you’re Jewish
When you go to a KKK meeting for 20 years, you’re a Racist
AND
When you go to a church that preaches hatred of whites for 20 years, you’re a Racist
Obama says he is trying to "change type of stereotyping and false division" [racism], but uses “typical white women” to describe his grandmother. Obama, is a Liar, a racist, and a FAKE.

Have you spent your "rebate" (wink, wink) yet? How does that help the government debt?
Posted by: lochnessmonster | April 28, 2008 6:55 AM
Lets do the math: yes a word problem ;)
In TX gas is $3.60 a gallon and will go up as the summer grade is rolled in so lets say by June it will be $3.71 (thats already up 11 cents) so now we "save" 18 cents a gallon --- more like 7 cents already huh and then gas prices will not freeze so by August we will be paying $4.00 a gallon - then they add the tax back - $4.18 a gallon
WHAT A GREAT VACATION HUH
Hillary Clinton started her "gas-tax holiday" talk AFTER John McCain and yet only last month she ridiculed Barack Obama for saying McCain would be a "better president than Bush" How odd is it that? This is something that cannot happen - have you ever seen a birthday card go throught congress in a month? ... no
Who is stealing ideas now? not Obama .... Who is agreeing with poor policies of Bush era? not Obama .... Who is an elitest pandering to the desparation and poor understanding of "common folks"? not Obama
Who is making sound judgements? Who already knows this "gas-tax holidy WONT WORK? Who is the best hope for America - Barack Obama
