Race, his middle name and "scurrilous emails" about him are partly responsible for the discomfort some people have with him, Barack Obama told Jewish leaders in a private meeting in the Philadelphia area today.
He also told the group of 75 leaders at a local synagogue that he feels a sense of "kinship" with the Jewish community, and that he has been influenced in his life by Jewish writers, philosophers and friends.
“There is a kinship and a sense of shared community that predates my political career and will extend beyond this particular election," Obama said, according to the pool report from the closed-door event. "Know that I will be there for you, just as I believe that you will be there for me.”
“My links to the Jewish community are not political," he said. "They preceded my entry into politics.”

I dont buy it. 20 years under Wright and the lifetime achievement award to Farahkan holds very strong in my mind.

for one will not be bamboozled by Mr. Obama. I consciously downright refuse the Obamamikans hyper-contextualizing every single of his dismal faux-pas. There are no larger peers of relativism to dock here. His broader cruise ship appeal has sunk starting from the Wright issue. He made a huge gross generalization of the rural majority in a sophomoric plight in front of a whole bunch San Franciscans multi-millionaires. But if I am getting too elitist here allow me to slap myself back to reality: God Damn America is wrong. Insensitive 9/11 remarks are wrong. Disconnected remarks contemptuous of your own voters is wrong and no amount of "context-caging can change that.

His kinship with Reverend Wright and Louis Farrakhan? Please. If I were in that meeting I'd feel insulted. Based on his votes and his far left constituency there's every reason to believe that support for Israel would be the first casualty of an Obama administration.

Amazing how many people he is supposedly "kin to"..Sounds good to be such an empty statement..Just like all his other analagies.....Walk lightly. HRC is coming to get you Obama....Michelle need to practice her Jackie O. persona a bit more....NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

This guy will say ANYTHING. How's he different from any other politician? As a democrat, I am starting to come to grips with what is really going on.Obama over Hillary equals 4 to 8 more years of Repubs. All because you people fell in love with this guy. I feel sick.

Sounds reasonable, just like most everything Obama has said.

Which specific votes Jeff?

Jeff,
Why should we finance Israel's military? Why can't they pay for their own defense? I thought America should look to preserve America's interests, not the interests of foreign governments?

To those who fear that Obama, despite his pro-Israel voting record and statements, is a secret anti-Semite -- I am Jewish and a fluent speaker of Hebrew who has lived in Israel and even worked as an AIPAC campus liaison in college. There is no reason to doubt Obama's pro-Israel and pro-Jewish views. In addition to his record as a senator and state senator, there is the fact that his campaign manager (David Axelrod) is Jewish, as are most of his inner circle of elite fundraisers (Orin Kramer, Penny Pritzker, Alan Solomont, James Rubin). Do you think any of those people would have anything to do with him, much less raise millions for him, if they had any doubt of his views about Jews and Israel? You don't know something they don't know, and frankly, you're being suckered by right-wing operatives who are spreading lies to prevent the Democrat from winning at any cost.

I can't wait for Carter to endorse Obama: The wisdom of Jimmy Carter: "When I go to a dictatorship, I only have to talk to one person and that's the dictator, because he speaks for all the people"
Obama listened attentively to his pastor's diatribes against the United States and Israel and said nothing. opted for silence instead of courage. Democratic and Republican Congressional leaders have strongly condemned Jimmy Carter's planned meeting with Khaled Mashal, head of the Hamas terrorist organization. Both Democrats and Republicans demonstrated their leadership in a bipartisan letter to the former president entreating him to refrain from using his stature to undermine U.S. policy and negotiate with Hamas. (Hamas is committed to the complete eradication of Israel and has forsworn any negotiations in favor of violence.) Among Democrats speaking out on the House floor was Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), "In light of Hamas' continuing violence and calls for the destruction of the State of Israel, I strongly urge President Carter to reconsider his decision." Others warned that meeting with Hamas would not only undermine U.S. policy and the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas, but lend legitimacy to the group that thwarts all efforts for peace.
Obama, stunningly, declined to take a moral stance and instead chose silence. What kind of non-vote was that?
Rashid Khalidi, a pro-Palestinian author, has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Obama.
A man once known for engaging the issue of Palestinian liberation in Chicago’s Arab American community now can be found sharing his message of Israel-love to anybody who will listen. This change of opinion intimates a lack of integrity.

I'll use the same refrain the Loons on the Left use for all the politicians they don't like:
Panderer!!!
Not only that, but now Obama is morphing into Hillary: saying everything and anything to give folks what they want to hear.
Soon, Obama will say about his recent trip to Africa that he had to run the serpentine to avoid sniper fire!!
Posted by: John D | April 16, 2008 3:40 PM
KH, to answer your question, yes. I ABSOLUTELY believe that Penny Pritzker and David Axelrod would sell out Israel in a heartbeat for more personal power. Their lust for power is well-documented.
Axelrod is a political strategist and just look at how quickly Pritzker has turned on Millenium Park for one of her pet projects. You're more than welcome to your belief that the man who was elevated in Illinois politics thanks to the patronage of Tony Rezko (a Syrian) and Nadmhi Auchi (an Iraqi billionaire who had ties to Saddam) is the new best friend of Israel. Some of us have looked into his background and know better.
Posted by: Jeff | April 16, 2008 3:41 PM
You see the people he has hung out with for 20 years in Chicago are pro-Palestinian "progressives"...giving
intelligent people lots of room to doubt his sincerity.
And the reason we should support the Israeli military is twofold. Israel is the first line of defense against Jihadists; and the Israeli military complex supplies our military complex with a huge amount of highly technical advancements.

Obama makes me feel like anything is possible. Yesterday, I went for lunch, and I thought to myself, 'This is meal after breakfast that I've been waiting for before dinner.' So much hope. I know that if Obama is in the White House, there will be peace between the Arabs and Jews in the Middle East. There just will be. Obama will talk quietly and sensibly to everyone. And they will all realize that race and culture and religion and differences in interests mean nothing compared to waiting for and arriving at and getting past breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Jeff-
Again which specific votes? Come on, you said his votes caused you to question his support for Israel, tell us which ones.
Oh and please stop lying. Obama has clearly stated his criticism of Carter's meeting with Hamas at the event this post is about..
"That's why I have a fundamental difference with President Carter and disagree with his decision to meet with Hamas," Obama said. "We must not negotiate with a terrorist group intent on Israel's destruction. We should only sit down with Hamas if they renounce terrorism, recognize Israel's right to exist and abide by past agreements."
"Hamas is not a state. Hamas is a terrorist organization," he said."

Jeff -- Interesting that you ignore Alan Solomont, the Chairman of the Board of Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston and massive contributor to many Jewish charities, and Orin Kramer, also a big donor to Jewish causes (and married into another big Jewish philanthropic family, the Ballons). Are they also willing to sell out the Jewish people?
Oh, but wait, Obama's secretly anti-Israel because he got support in the past from Tony Rezko, who's also donated heavily to every other major Chicago politician in both parties (Blagojevich, Daley, Ryan, etc. etc.)
Frankly, I think anyone reading your posts will see that they are the hack work of a political operative. Good luck fooling people.

Bigot Jeff-
So any politician who as connections to people born in Syria isn't to be trusted? What other nationalities are proof of being Anti-Israel? Is it ok to be connected to Saudis? How about Egyptians? Lebanese? Jordanian? Palestinian? Or are they all forebidden in your fearful hate filled world view?
You are an ignorant bigoted fool if you seriously believe that connection to a Syrian makes one unfit to serve as President, or an enemy of Israel.
Posted by: Syrian-American | April 16, 2008 4:46 PM
Jeff,
You don't think Palestine should be liberated from Israeli Occupation, ever????
Posted by: jethro | April 16, 2008 5:03 PM
JT, you're obfuscating. If he was against Carter's trip why didn't he sign the non-partisan letter from both houses of congress? Why didn't he sign the letter?! Could it be that he doesn't want a written record of his objection to be there for when he meets with the Palestinian groups? Like I said, no political courage. Period. He, again, declined to condemn Jimmy Carter for taking the trip, just ask Reuters. Enough with your lies.
Obama has not once condemned Al Sharptons' anti-semitic comments about Jews and Israel and still counts Sharpton as a supporter. As for the votes, everyone knows Obama only votes with the democrat majority and when there's a difficult vote he abstains. But the democratic agenda, alone, should be enough to show that he's no friend of Israel.
But nothing should concern Israel supporters as much as Obama’s foreign policy team, which consists of the likes of Zbigniew Brzezinski, a remnant of the administration of President Jimmy Carter, who, like Rev. Wright, calls Israel an apartheid state. Brzezinski, Carter’s national security advisor, has long held anti-Israel views and supports open dialogue with the terrorist group Hamas. Other top foreign policy advisors with avowed hostility toward Israel include Susan Rice and Robert Malley. Above all that his foreign policy team until very recently Samantha Power, a longtime enemy of Israel in academia.
Danny Ayalon, the former Israeli ambassador to the U.S., called the senator's candidacy cause for "some degree of concern."

Jeff,
So if you are Syrian-American you are the enemy of the US. Do you speak for the McCain campaign. Arab-Americans would like to know.

you've got to be kidding me... his pastor is farrakhan's biggest fan and he feels close to the jewish community?
i suppose if he were meeting with a group of iranian clerics he would say he feels close to them too.
political expediency is this guy's game, just like hussein is is middle name. it's time to wake up, mainstream media. this guy needs to be vetted before he wins the nomination.
Posted by: justathinker | April 16, 2008 5:30 PM
Jeff, your link is 5 days old. He condemned the meeting. That's a simple fact. A simple fact you lied about. Another simple fact that you lied about is that the bipartisan letter was from both houses of Congress. It wasn't. It was only from members of the House. Obama didn't sign it because he serves in the Senate. Guess who else didn't sign it for the same reason? John McCain. I guess John McCain hates Israel too?
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,351440,00.html
"On Tuesday, more than 50 House members wrote Carter urging him to not meet with Meshal, calling him the man behind the deaths of 26 Americans."
But again, where are those votes that concern you so? Still haven't found one have you? So you go back to your favorite guilt by assocaition games with a bunch of outright lies thrown in. You're just pathetic Jeff. Senator McCain should be ashamed at what you do in his name.
Posted by: JT | April 16, 2008 5:59 PM
Jeff, you still haven't answered about Solomont and Kramer. That's because you have no answer for why they, and other Jews deeply committed to Jewish causes, support Obama.
Instead you'll just spread more lies and smears. How has Obama "counted" Sharpton as a supporter? There is no connection between them, except that they're both black public figures.
You describe Robert Malley as anti-Israel. Yet Malley is Jewish and simply a supporter of the peace process. He was attacked as anti-Israel by those on the far right of the Israeli political spectrum and their sympathizers in the US because he disagreed with the account of the 2000 Camp David summit that faulted Arafat for its failure. (Malley participated as an adviser to Pres. Clinton). Yet people with indisputable pro-Israel credentials have publicly defended Malley against that accusation, calling it wrong and "scurrilous." Among them are Martin Indyk, who has spent his entire career as a diplomat and scholar defending Israel, Dennis Ross(!), and Daniel Kurtzer, Bush's US Ambassador to Israel. Please explain to me how these men, who have all worked closely with Malley, are wrong when they say he is not anti-Israel, and you are right.
What you're really doing is smearing anyone who does not share your far-right views as anti-Israel, including the entire Israeli peace camp. As a proud Jew and Zionist who supports peace and equality between Israelis and Palestinians, I reject your McCarthyite smear politics, and your narrow vision of Israel's future. You, Jeff, are a threat to the long-term safety and well-being of the Jewish people. Stop lying about Barack Obama, who frankly is a better embodiment of Jewish values than you are.

It should be obvious that a country whose core ideology calls for it to be a "rampart" against Asia and its native population may not be interested in peace. Throw in fear of Holocaust and it can't even be bothered.

The man will say anything to get into office. Jewish kinship? Are you kidding me. Obama was raised MUSLIM by an ISLAMIC EXTREMIST FATHER. I'm starting to think his presidential campaign is an attempt to institute Islamofascism in the US.

KH---AIPAC does NOT belong on college campuses.
You little fascist. Bet you hold a dual citizenship so you can escape this country after you trash it by bankrupting us to support the unsupportable--the status quo regarding Israeli war crimes against the Palestinians.
Shame on you.
Move to Israel already. Work with Yesh Gvil.
And Obama---go to Israel with KH.
Posted by: Reform Jew | April 16, 2008 7:39 PM
You're both dead wrong. And I've already told you, voting the ENTIRE democratic party line except for votes that you abstain from because you want to run for president is not pro-Israel. Joe Lieberman wouldn't even do that when he was a democrat. People like Samantha Power and Jimmy Carter absolutely are Anti-Israel. And there's a lot more between Al Sharpton and Obama. Sharpton endorsed Obama!
You know who else endorsed him? Ahmed Yusuf, one of the leaders of Hamas, you know the TERRORIST group that demands the destruction of Israel?
Here's what he thinks of Obama: "We don’t mind–actually we like Mr. Obama. We hope he will (win) the election and I do believe he is like John Kennedy, great man with great principle, and he has a vision to change America to make it in a position to lead the world community but not with domination and arrogance."
Hey, but whatever, be a proud jew and zionist who agrees with Ahmed Yusuf about Obama. See if I care.

Still haven't found a single specific anti-Israel vote have you Jeff? Just one lie on top of another. The letter lie, the lie that Obama didn't denounce Carter's meeting, the lie that Obama's votes are anti-Israel. I guess we all can see how little credibility you have. You're a model Republican.
What a sad pathetic arguement by a sad pathetic person.

let's see, a majority of israelis want to talk to hamas. eh, what do they know?
Posted by: benjoya | April 17, 2008 1:27 PM
Obama stated that as President of the United States he would definitely support Israel, however if you visit the liberal democratic blog sites, it's obvious that an overwhelming number of Obama's constituents are pro-palestinian and anti-Israel. This dynamic also exists with Jeremiah Wright and the church Obama attended for 20 years. Obama has to look like he supports Israel to win the Presidency, however what about after he gets elected ... if he gets elected. If it becomes politically expedient, will Israel become expendable, just as Jeremiah Wright did? In the meantime, numerous Jewish journalists, and politicians are endorsing Obama. I suppose this provides them with acceptance in the leftist progressive world, and or protects their individual success and ambitions, since Obama appears to be the next democratic candidate. Anti-semitism runs rampid just under the surface in society. I just hope that Obama will not betray the jews, if it becomes a way to appease the Islamic world.

Race? Why should race be a problem? He's the color of most Jews and/or Hebrew descendants that I know and I'm not talking about European Jews either. I'm so sick of these white-as-the-norm and brown-as-the-exception paradigms.
Further, I had no idea that Semitic was a term exclusive to Jews. Eritreans, Tigreans, and Arabs (among others) are all Semites, so unless they hate themselves, we they can never be anti-Semitic.
