Gallup tracking poll

by Mark Silva

Was there a price to pay, for Barack Obama, in the last televised debate before the Pennsylvania primary election next week?

The Gallup Poll says yes.

Gallup's pollsters, who have been running daily tracking surveys of more than 1,000 voters a day, say they found the day after the televised debate from Philadelphia - for the first time in a while - more Democrats nationally voicing support for Sen. Hillary Clinton than for Barack Obama.

The result is a tightening in the national match-up between Obama and Clinton which has favored Obama for some time as well. The 10-point advantage that Obama held over Clinton in the three-day averages of Gallup's daily track as recently as April 13 has narrowed to just a 3 percentage-point advantage in the newest release today.

"The initial indications are that Obama may have been hurt by the debate,'' reports Gallup's Jeff Jones, noting the debate's "negative tone and focus on the candidates' recent "gaffes" and Obama's associations with the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers (a former member of the radical Weather Underground group).

"In Thursday night's interviewing, Clinton received a greater share of national Democratic support than Obama, the first time she has done so in an individual night's interviewing since April 3,'' he reports. "That stronger showing for Clinton helped to snap Obama's streak of statistically significant leads in the three-day rolling averages Gallup reports each day. Until today, he had led Clinton by a statistically significant margin in each of the prior 11 Gallup releases.''

Of course, this is a national snapshot of the contest between two Democrats whose contest will depend a lot more on the outcome of Pennsylvania's primary on Tuesday and the primaries that follow two weeks later in North Carolina and Indiana. But Clinton, counting on a win Tuesday, also counts on an argument that she is more electable than Obama in swaying the party's superdelegates.

There is only one poll that really matters and that will occur at our convention, Go, you Democrats
SUPPORT OUR TROPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

As polls go, they will fluctuate. If some Americans like dirty politics, accusations without foundation, and a lesser discussion of the issues facing this country, then they will, no doubt, be affected by the negative attacks. Thinking Americans, however, put far more emphasis on the positions of the candidates on the issues and their sense that the candidate attacked is weathering the storm. Obama appears to be doing that. The fact that he doesn't engage Clinton in the same way she attacks him is to his credit in the long run. Sure, political machines in Pennsylvania and other places may have their weight and effect on the outcome of elections, but the one left standing with integrity, courage and moral purpose will be the true winner. That goes to the heart and core of Obama's true self. We already know what Clinton is willing to do to win, and it has little to do with a true desire to serve this country. So, as polls indicate today, she seems to be leading, but many Americans are not convinced that she is the leader this nation needs. And, the final outcome will not be based on polls.

Hillary can't avoid character assassination. Stay focused on the issues. Do not let the media elect our next president.

Clinton and her drunk on delusion cheerleaders are the ones who have constantly whined and carped about so-called "media bias" and being asked the first question in debates and all that other crap. Obama has barely talked about it this week and, to the extent he did, he laughed it off.

Clinton is the absolute biggest, most shameless, disingenuous, disgusting, shameless liar and manipulator I have seen in a good long time, she reminds me of a.....REPUBLICAN!

Tough, smart lady and family that can take the heat, win in Nov. and change the direction of the country.

Lets take a look at the real numbers.

My vote is for Senator Obama and I think most people's would be if they would simply look at the facts.

What will the polls read, say, next Friday?

Stay tuned...

there is another gaffe. obama fingered hillary during a speech in north carolina yesterday. what a joke this guy is. doesn't know how to control his emotions. not good. to view go to youtube and enter obama and finger. you will not believe it.

Hillary has been though the meat grinder. She has what it takes to survive. She made a couple big blunders (oops Bosnia) but like her or not everyone knows who she is and what to expect. She has what it takes to run the country and do it well.

The more we learn about Obama the less there is to see. He is just an inept charlatan who tried to pull the wool over everyones eyes. Now that the truth is coming out it isn't pretty and he isn't even man enough to take the heat. She is better than him in every way.

If Hillary loses the nomination then McCain is the only one left qualified to run the country. Obama is too out of touch, inexperienced and frankly shouldn't have a leadership role of any kind.

Clinton certainly is a "fighter" but she is not a "winner". She is more of a dirt slinger than and champion of the people. I don't for one minute think that Hillary Clinton will run this country for us. She will run it for her and Bill. He will be a huge distraction with all his foreign conflict of interest deals. The will be as messy as they were the first time.

Does anyone else find it so very odd that the Obama left sound so much like the Republican right when they describe Hillary.
The greatest irony is that they call HER a republican in the process. Weird.
PS I have voted for Obama three times, Hillary no times.

The press has all the right in the world to question Obama in the BitterGate and now that Obama worked for terrorist William Ayers. He said he was 8 when Ayers bombed New York. Nice try. But he was 30something when he served on a board with Mr. Ayers in the 1990’s, the Woods Foundation, which was a paid, underlined PAID directorship position. They worked together, attended fundraisers together, Ayers held fundraisers and was a contributor to Obama’s Chicago’s campaign, plus they are neighbors and visited each other quite often. Enough said. This relationship deserves being vetted. As an adult Obama made the decision to work with a terrorist. This is a legitimate issue, the judgment and associations of the possible nominee. Its goes straight to the reason why democrats have lost the last two elections. It goes directly to his associations with Farrahkan, Wright, Ayers, Auchi and Refko. This needs to be fully vetted.

The debate created an anti-Obama atmosphere -- he will have to some heavy ground campaigning to win over voters. He's a smart guy though so I know he'll pull through. If he pulled through that Rev Wright blow up, I'm sure he can pull through this. Voters just need to see and meet him to be convinced of his charisma and appeal. I'm 100% behind him because he is the one that can change the country and has the best message and plan to do this. Hillary has some good plans as well, but hers is clouded by her anti-Obama rhetoric so that all her supporters see is her attacking Obama and they in turn do the same. Obama had the right strategy at the debate, he could have been a little more assertive about getting to the issues, but he shouldn't have attacked Hillary because he's running a campaign for a different kind of politics. I for one am looking forward to the match up between him and McCain, who also seems above personal attacks and believes he can win off the issues. Bravo!

The majority of Americans are waking up to the fact that Obama is a smug, smirking con man and Trojan horse for hate in America. Nothing more. He will be defeated.

Obama took all the heat at the debate. Clinton just stood by and smiled because she knew before hand that Obama was going to be bushwhacked. She got her buddy George to do her dirty work. Obama was set up and did well under the circumstances.

It is hard to stay above the petty underhanded politics that we are seeing but Obama will keep us on course to win in November.

Whoever is the next president, I really hope so many situations become better. However I can"t see a republican president helping to make that happen. Moreover american voters need to get all of these senators and congressmen out of office, who have been there more than 4 terms.

Obama’s debate performance was painful to watch – the stuttering, the stammering – (not to mention the lying).

Even worse than his horrific performance is the whining and complaining from him and his supporters about how “tough” the moderators of the debate were on poor Obama.

If you can’t stand the heat…..

Hillary can take the heat – she is a strong, smart candidate and the democrat’s best chance for taking back the White House.

I will be surprised of Obama's flip off of Hillary doesn't have a big effect on th polls. However, know how unconcious Obama's supporters are I believe he could do anything even flipping off another US Senator. Real class there obama, but what else would you expect from someone like him and his minister. God damn America, flip off to you Hillary, same old Obama class.

Why hasn't there been any media reports on the pervasive abusive bullying languages used by Obama supporters? They contantly stink as much as Wright's mouth.

Interestingly, the Rasmussen poll of Pennsylvanian voters shows the opposite effect. Clinton's Pennsylvania lead on the 17th (poll taken the day after the debates) was six points lower than on the 14th. According to Rassmussen, she went from a 9pt lead to a 3 pt lead within those three days.

Hillary keeps saying that because she's been in the public eye for years, everyone knows her dirt and she can handle the scrutiny, and this makes her a better candidate.

Yet, she's helping make sure every bit of dirt on Obama gets aired (over and over and over), allowing him the opportunity to weather the scrutiny, thus leaving no new ammo for Republicans in the general election. Does anyone else see this backfiring for Clinton? Getting past her attacks and the farce that was Wednesday's debate will only make Obama stronger, even if public opinion wavers for a day or two.

She's trying to play dirty but is really just nullifying her own argument and (I hope) shooting herself in the foot.

P.S. re: Obama's finger -- it could have been intentional, or it could have been an absent-minded gesture, there's no way of knowing. Either way, given the campaign she's run, I wouldn't fault him for it.

What has Obama done for Illinois or Chicago since he's been elected? Nothing
It's amazing how gullible people are how support him.
Think for yourselves. Don't vote based on emotion, use some critical thinking. Don't believe what you see in the media you pea heads.
Look at the people he surrounds himself with? Look at his track record? Look how many votes he missed? Ask why?

Amazes me that some many people can be deluded by "sweet words", when by religious, business, social, political and family association/relationships, Obama a different story is heard. Are we so desparate for a democratic candidate we will ignore these things. The questioners of the debate didn't, and with good reason and asked those questions which need to be answered.

We are tired of OLD politics. Tired + Broke = Bitter.
PLEASE VOTE FOR CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John E, he laughed it off with his middle finger in the air. Oh yea he hardly talked about it. Where have you been? When he was putting his middle finger on his cheek he was probably whiping away the tears, because he did so badly in the debate. Someone should cut off his middle finger, isn't that what they do in Kenya when someone does something offensive?

As more & more of the media
take a closer look at, investigate, and vet Sen. Obama, Sen. Clinton's polls will rise & Sen. Obama's polls
will sink!

His evasive, non-responsive, uptight performance in response to tough questions
by the ABC moderators did not help his polls or him.

Columns by Messrs. Kristol &
Brooks a few days and today
pointed to more of Sen. Obama's shortcomings.

The column in a Boston paper
today highlighting the close recent link of Sen. Obama to Prof.Ayres did not help Sen. Obama either.

As the media continue to unearth more scary background information about Sen.Obama, his polls will continue to sink.

Today's attempt by his handlers to divert the focus from Sen Obama's poor debate performance to announcements about former Clintonites' endorsement of Sen. Obama should not divert the media from digging further.

Only more investigations and vetting of Sen. Obama will
determine the extent of why all should be very concerned about Sen. Obama, his fringe,non-mainstream ideas, ideals, and values.

Only when the media finds out what Sen. Obama believes in and whether he embraces Black liberation thinking and what it implies will the media
be well on the road to vetting him.

On October 2, 2002, Barack Obama’s judgment told him that starting a war in Iraq would be a big mistake and he forcefully said so. Much to the contrary later that same month both Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain voted for funds authorizing President Bush to begin the Iraq war.
When Barack Obama decided to run for president, unlike Hillary Clinton and John McCain, he made the significant decision that he would not accept campaign contributions from lobbyists, special interests, and political action committees for his presidential campaign. It was Barack Obama’s judgment that it would be preferable if the next President of the United States was elected without being beholden to money peddlers in Washington.

Suppose Barack Obama becomes the Democratic nominee for president at the Democratic National Convention in August, and suppose in the November general election the majority of Americans decide to vote for Barack Obama, the presidential candidate who among many other things has refused to accept campaign contributions from special interests, political action committees, and lobbyists but has financed his campaign solely from the contributions of people to whom he is accountable.

Furthermore, suppose this idea of raising money for political campaigns directly from the voters to whom the candidate is accountable sits so well with the American people that they come to expect that future presidential candidates as well as candidates for other offices such for the US Senate and House of Representatives will do as Barack Obama has done. What if candidates who continue to accept campaign contributions from special interests, political action committees, and lobbyists find it increasingly difficult to get elected? Would that help or hurt democracy in America?

That’s the kind of change that Barack Obama represents which concerns so many in Washington who don’t seem very eager for the American people to reclaim their democracy from the influence of special interests, political action committees, and lobbyists, the Washington money peddlers who currently arrange to provide huge amounts of financial support to political candidates whom they believe have a good chance of winning, and whom they can then “work with” later on.
This election is not about whether you happen to be a woman or a man, or whether your father was a black man or a white man, an Asian or a Hispanic. This election is about the future of our country.
We are at a historic moment in America. Barack Obama is a very special candidate for president who can bring about significant changes in Washington and help ordinary Americans begin reclaiming their democracy.
Both the Governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson, and Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey Jr. know this and have recently endorsed Senator Barack Obama, recognizing Obama’s integrity, intelligence, and the strong leadership he can provide as president.
It is time for voters in Pennsylvania and in all of the other states soon to vote in presidential primary elections to stand up and be counted. It’s time for ordinary Americans to begin the process of reclaiming American democracy by voting for Barack Obama.

We don't vote like the polls.
The electoral college.
And Obama hurt himself in that debate.
And the next day, he flashed the bird at Hilary and apparently nobody cares.
If the shoe were on the other foot

The Republicans couldn't ask for a better friend than the one have in Hillary Clinton.

In a year that the Repugs have no business being anywhere near the White House and in a year that they have a godawful old man Bush clone (McCain) as their nominee, Clinton decides that if she can't have the Dem nomination then she's going to just blowup the whole damn Democratic Party.

There's a saying about the Clinton's and it goes like this:

"The Clintons are always there for you, when they need you"

No truer words were ever spoken.

I almost feel sorry for all of the delusional Clinton cheerleaders out there, they really have lost touch with reality and they should seek out some psychological help as for why they feel the need to use the Clintons to cover up for their own personal shortcomings in life.

It's just one poll, and these things often fluctuate. Still, Obama has too many recent gaffes and questionable pals (Rev. Wright, Ayers, Rezko) for comfort. Tuesday's Pennsylvania primary may prove decisive - but for whom?

Hillary has become the Ralph Nader of '08. She is not going to win, but persists for her own interests. All she can accomplish now is to make it tougher for Obama this fall by damaging his support and providing fuel for the Republicans dirty tricks people.

God damn America, flip off to you Hillary, same old Obama class.

Hey Mayberry RFB,

I wish Obama would have flipped Clinton off, personally, I'd love to have the chance to flip off that Republican loving, liar Hillary.

It's about time someone flashes a bird to Hillary. She is a vindictive woman trying to get even with her husband through this election. Unfortunately Hillary is running like a typical woman. She is throwing dirt at her neighbor. And who is she kidding when she states the history of this campaign will be marked by a WOMAN AND AN AFRO AMERICAN,whomever wins. She has a big grudge to satisfy and what better way could she do it than the presidency.I too am a female but she certainly does not represent femininity and what our gender has been working for...so be it!

Obama is a do nothing Senator. He lost the first debate where he had to answer any questions. He will not beat McCain. America will continue to be safe from his Terrorist friends.

Obamas racist ties will keep him from the White House. Dems had better hope Hillary gets the nom. Otherwise, it is over.

what's better for ABC, MSNBC, CNN, ....etc A primary election season that is DOA in April? or one that extends through to the General?

...hmmmmmmmm? Amazing that it took 24 debates for Americans to finally realize that the questions that candidates are asked are based not on what the people are interested in hearing, but on what will continue to sell mass media bull.
Obama, McCain, Clinton - all the same!!!!

Senator Obama has way too much CLASS to give anyone the finger!!! Some of you people want to treat him like a street punk _-YOU WISH!!! Just because that's the way YOU interpret what you saw doesn''t mean anything...YOUR MOUTH'S NOT A PRAYERBOOK ! Just keep on defending "DODGE THE BULLET HILL"...didn.t you people hear what she said about Southerners??? 'SCREW 'EM, BILL!"

Atheletes Feet; (THAT'S THE WAY YOU SPELLED IT!) So you're trying to imply that people don't vote by the polls...well, do they just want to consistently throw their money away??? Do you REALLY think it's just black people supporting him??? We don't care if YOU vote for him or not...check out the NATIONAL POLLS!!! By the way, where's Hillary's pin?????...maybe on the cuff of her PANTSUIT!!!!!

OBAMAS AGAIN NAMED IN FEDERAL Rezko trial!
Obama needs to tell us more about his relationship with Ayers. It’s important because voters might well wonder whether that relationship, coupled with Obama’s longtime relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, is the beginning of a pattern, a pattern in which Obama seems quite comfortable with people who really, really, really don’t like the United States of America.

FEDERAL COURT | The Obamas lied about attending bash for Iraqi crook Nadhmi Auchi. BY NATASHA KORECKI, CHRIS FUSCO AND TIM NOVAK

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama was again drawn into Tony Rezko's corruption trial when the prosecution's star witness placed Obama at a party for an Iraqi-born billionaire who was barred entry to the United States. Stuart Levine testified under cross-examination that Obama and his wife, Michelle, attended the reception for Nadhmi Auchi.

An Obama connection court testimony have linked presidential hopeful Barack Obama with Iraqi-born billionaire Nadhmi Auchi and Rezko. Obama met Middle Eastern bankers at the Four Seasons hotel in Chicago hosted by Rezko, who was courting potential investors for a 62-acre South Loop development. Auchi later took control of that project. Later Auchi attended a dinner party at Rezko's Wilmette mansion. Obama and his wife, Michelle, also were there, according to federal testimony at Rezko's corruption trial. The Obama campaign's responsed that Senator and Mrs. Obama have no recollection of attending the event.

Jan. 28, 2008 Rezko was jailed for withholding details of his finances -- including a $3.5 million payment from Auchi convicted of fraud in France in 2003. After visiting Chicago and Detroit in 2004, he wasn't allowed back into this country, according to a prosecution filing in the Rezko case gathering for Auchi took place at Rezko's mansion in Wilmette, with Mr. and Mrs. Obama there. Monday, Obama camp said Obama does not recall meeting Nadhmi Auchi but Obamas attended the Wilmette reception, which came less than a month after Obama's Democratic primary win for his U.S. Senate seat. Rezko had been a key fund-raiser for Obama with Auchi. Obamas relationship with Rezko who is accused of demanding kickbacks from people seeking Illinois government business is now under a federal microscope as he seeks the presidency. Obama particularly has drawn fire for buying property from Rezko's wife a strip of land adjacent to Obama's Kenwood home at a time when both Obamas knew Rezko was already known to be under federal investigation.

Gov. Blagojevich hosted a separate dinner party for Auchi two days earlier, at the Four Seasons hotel in downtown Chicago, the Sun-Times has reported. Auchi was named by prosecutors in the January court filing that led to Rezko's bail being revoked and his being jailed. Last April, an Auchi company wired Rezko $3.5 million in connection with a valuable 62-acre South Loop site, which Rezko didn't disclose to authorities. Auchi's General Mediterranean Holding now controls the land at Roosevelt and Clark. Prosecutors said Rezko appealed to the State Department in November 2005 to allow Auchi to enter the United States, after Auchi was unable to do so.

Huffington Post-William Ayers, in the age of terrorism, is Obamas Willie Horton said
Former counterterrorism expert Larry Johnson,
There has been sudden information linking Obama to a former member of the radical Weathermen Underground group that claimed responsibility for a dozen bombings between 1970 and 1974. The former Weatherman, William Ayers, told the New York Times. I don't regret setting bombs...I feel we didn't do enough. Obama and Ayers were members of the board between 92-02. In addition, Ayers contributed to Obama's election to the Senate. They lived within a few blocks of each other in the trendy Hyde Park section of Chicago and moved in the same liberal-progressive circles. Larry Johnson, a former counterterrorism official at the CIA and the State Department, predicts Republicans would seize on the Ayers case, and again raises questions about Obama's judgment. WHERES MAINSTREAM MEDIA LIKE CNN & MSNBC WHY ARE THEY HIDING THIS MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM VOTERS??

Let's see if there's a pattern here. Turning his back on Hillary. Telling her she's "likeable enough." Being oh so clever giving the finger and smirking about it. Obama demonstrates a remarkable lack of grace and class. I've come from holding him in some admiration to seeing him for what he really is - a smug thug.

I have heard that most commercial adult television is produced for a twelve year old mentality so as not to require the adult viewer to engage in a great deal of thinking. Maybe the producers of the ABC presidential debate used similar criteria

The first 45 minutes of “Obama Vetting" could be dismissed as inconsequential by an 8th grader with access to the internet and the names John McCain, and Hillary R. and William J. Clinton. The 2nd half provided little if any clarity on important issues currently facing the voters and awaiting the next president of our country.

What we saw during the debate was a lack of professionalism by the moderators, Sen. Clinton (being "Hillary"), and Sen. Obama failing to lift a trio of political bottom-feeders to a higher level of debate. The ironic is ABC's overall record of excellence may for a time be over-shadowed by this catastrophe

The truth of my statement can be found in the unprecedented criticism launched at ABC from viewers and the professional press community. .

Some have suggested that the uproar came because Sen. Obama did not fair well during the debate. The enemy of lies is the truth and the truth is: ABC's own online poll taken immediately after the debate had Sen. Obama winning the debate by a margin greater than 2 - 1.

Maybe ABC's political analysts and others have not figured it out...CHANGE is what the America Voter seek in our national politics in the 21st century.

Obviously, its time for CHANGE to occur in the media as well.

Obama is brilliant and his backers are even smarter. They (with his approval) are complaining about ABC's questions during the first 45 minutes to hide the fact he was confused and befuddled by the "issue" questions during the second half of the debate. He clearly doesn't understand the consequences of raising the capital gains tax. He also blatantly lied about his handwriting not being on the gun questionnaire. His campaign had confirmed it was Obama's handwriting.

Senator Obama looked like a deer in the headlights.

The little boy has proclaimed the Emperor is naked and all the phony laughing isn't going to change the fact he isn't ready to be President of The United States.

Same old, same old. I can't believe how many racist, ignorant remarks I see posted here. Obama has too much class to stoop to Hillary's level. He kept trying to bring that sorry "debate" back to the pertinent issues but the media only cares about what sells. God help us if we don't get a new brand of politics that lifts up the average person, rises above race and gender and restores America to it's former ethical status. We say we believe in freedom of speech, tolerance and justice but then succom to the politics of hate and fear. If this is the new America, I want no part of it. I am 60 years old, a white female and never before have I been so ashamed of my country....I have repented in the name of Christ for all the harm done by Christians in his name.

I am a senior citizen feminist who will never vote for Mrs. Clinton. Hillary believes she is entitled to her husband's ex-job, but most Americans dislike and distrust her, and on good evidence. We've watched Hillary lie with a smile on St Patrick's Day about coming under sniper fire in Bosnia. Watched her smile as she knee-caps Obama with distortions on words taken out of context. Watched her smile as she lies to blue collar workers about NAFTA and about her working class identity, she of the multimillions from shady off-shore corporations and with a Yale law-school degree put to the service of union-busting Walmart. Senator Obama shows restraint and class in steering away from negative attacks on her, and whoa! is there a pile of *hit on record with the Clinton dynasty. Pardons in exchange for payback from criminals, Saudi millions for the Clinton Foundation, hundreds of thousands for support of the Colombian free trade treaty, etc, etc. Hillary cries for the camera, chugs down whiskey chased with beer for the barflies, and keeps intimate company with an impeached president caught lying with his hand on the Bible about not having sex with that woman. The more we watch Hillary, the more we distrust her. The more we know Obama, the more he becomes our candidate to change dynastic business as usual in Washington. We citizens of the American Republic denounce and reject the Clinton dynasty. We want our democracy back.
