PHILADELPHIA—During last night’s Democratic presidential debate, Sen. Barack Obama gave a nuanced response as to whether he believed a District of Columbia law banning handguns, currently being considered by the U.S. Supreme Court, is consistent with the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms.
“Well Charlie, I confess, I obviously haven’t listened to the briefs and looked at all the evidence,” the Illinois senator told ABC News anchor Charles Gibson, a comment reflecting Obama’s years as a constitutional law lecturer.
Obama went on to explain that it was important to “reconcile the two realities in this country” of a long tradition of gun ownership and the need to curb city gun violence that he said had led to the deaths of 34 Chicago Public School students last year.

THE USUAL FLIP FLOP answer...If you want gun control I guess it's great. I believe in the right to bear arms...His answer on the form he filled out was the same old lying rhetoric...All he does is talk in riddles...The keyword is "talk"...

Gun control is not a bad thing.
So why did Obama vote 'present' on it in Illinois?
He can't win in November.
We need to unite behind Hilary--she can rehabilitate his many 'negatives' which the media will find a way to detect in their 'polls' just before November.
The media is just now bringing up the Weathermen stuff.
It will only get worse.
The 'polls' now and even in the Fall do not reflect how we VOTE.
HRC supporters should join Hilary's wise ground game.
Marxists like the Obamas strike me as sellouts who did not want to be victimized by the capitalism they hate. Cointelpro plants ruined the American peace movement--triggered massive beefing up of laws against civil disobedience.
People cannot now do the things the yippies did to get the attention of a complacent news media precisely because of the Weather Underground--which terrorized and splintered the peaceful SDS, by the way.
I find it very strange that the unrepentant Ayers surfaces at one of the more conservative institutions in America.
Liberals (true liberals) would be wise to work with HRC's ground game.
Let Obama HQ launch all the blog attacks like t-shirts at a basketball game.

Terrible answer from the unvetted unwise political wanna-be. He voted 'present' after campaigning FOR gun control and joining anti-gun efforts (laudably) in chicago.
There's a lot this guy is hiding.
And it could be used and misused to bring us a defeat that we might never recover from.
Getting the Republican oil/car/war party out of the White HOuse out of Congress is the most important goal.
Obama needs to fold into the Clinton campaing for the good of the party, country, and planet.

"...years as a constitutional law lecturer."
Guess we could not expect a Constitutional "expert" to figure out that the second amendment has to be repealed first.

Not just on guns, but throughout the night, Obama seemed to BS us on practically everything. It's amazing how his facial gestures get into this charming rhetorical/BS mode when he is flip flopping on answers. He did this with guns, affirmative action as well as taxes. Honestly, it's not hard to tell when he is being sincere and when he is pandering and giving an answer he thinks people want to hear. This will in no way make him a good President.
I watched very carefully last night for experience, honesty and well thought ideas on how to run this country. Without a doubt, HIllary won hands down. She is far more prepared. Never would I vote for Bill, but Hillary is looking good and may get my vote.
The GOP/Republicans will make minced meat of Obama if he gets the nomination. If the early stages of this campaign provide any clues, any attack that is made on him will be positioned so that it's actually an affront to all black people - he's been good at playing both side - sometimes he's not black, but if you attack him on any subject he goes there. Frankly, this will be very difficult to overcome once people are hip to this pattern.
As Americans, we need well vetted and long-term passionate proven leaders to run and represent this country, not pied piper who are living a fairy tale of a dream that they got this far. It's like Obama has miraculously made it to the final three of American Idol - he may even make it to the final two, but he'll get crunched by McCain as his talent is so much in another league.

Both candidates are avid gun confiscation advocates. Make no mistake, they both will come after your rights to be armed. That is their type of gun control. We will have none, while they have armed thugs to protect them.

Obama will do anything in his arsenal to win. That includes, but is not limited to lying, mis-representing, intimidation, deflecting questions by throwing jabs. Sounds like a true politician.
Unfortunately we've just gone through 8 years of the same.

Guns are a normal part of life in Rural America. Guns are feared in cities. Obama's base is big cities. So he needs to dance if he wants to win.
Just another pol who is afraid to say what he really stands for.

I am calling last night's exchange the "Egshell Debate." Foremost, both C and O were trying very hard to avoid direct answers on what they viewed as contentious.
Gun control was certainly one of them. They both tried to avoid answering the direct question "is DCs flat ban on handguns unconstitutional." Of course both feel that it isn't (and they are wrong on that) but neither had the fortitude to say what they think.
They both use the rhetoric "we believe in the second amendment" yet they both support restrictions that would render the amendment's protections meaningless.
Make no mistake. Neither Obama or Clinton have any respect for the second amendment of the United States constitituion.

For something that's been an issue in the public square this long, this is a cop out. How could he not have an opinion - and also be a constitutional law "lecturer" - on an issue that's been argued in the courts, with much media fanfare, for so many years
He's just trying to not offend either side.

My, my, my. All these Patriotic Republicans. They don't want more cops on the street, on every corner. They want to purchase any gun their heart desires so they can bring down the government. What true Patriots.

I'm confused, if the constitution literally means "citizens have the right to bear arms" would any limitation to this right violate the constitution? Do people want felons to own arms? Aren't they still citizens. Do we want citizens to own nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction? These are arms. I would hope eveyone could agree there needs to be some control of these arms. I don't think being for arms control means your in favor of banning all guns. This is not an all or nothing situation. However, the founding fathers did not anticipate today's arms i.e. rapid fire guns or weapons of mass destruction when they wrote the second amendment. Dueling pistols, muskettes, bow and arrows, swords and knives wouldn't pose a serious risk of the mass killings that we have seen happening in our schools recently. The weapons that are available today do. I don't believe any of our founding fathers would have argued with the wisdom of controlling these types of arms.

I am so proud of Hillary for changing her position and coming out for gun owners' rights in her support for the 2nd amendment!

Jo, exactly- and I mean exactly- what evidence or even inference do you have that Republicans and/or gun owners want to bring down the government? Or is this just another ridiculously foolish comment from a knee-jerk liberal who has never bothered to examine the issue?

Lots of opinions, not very much substance, including most of the words I have read by others posted here. If anyone believes that either of these two persons would be able to handle the leadership position of these United States, you are sadly mistaken. It scares me that people are memorized by their socialistic agenda. That's right, I said it. SOCIALISTS. Just give up your freedoms now, and let the state do it all. Then maybe some of you will realize what's been happening all along.

Adding more laws only effects people who buy them legally and use them for recreation. Those folks who use guns for illegal activity don't care about the laws and will get them no matter what laws we have. So what do you do?

The reason Obama is dodging the question is because Americans are too busy with knee-jerk reactions to listen long enough to a nuanced explanation of a complex subject.
In short:
In no way does a handgun ban infringe on the right of people to bear arms, because they can still obtain a rifle or shotgun.
The intent of the founding fathers was for us to have guns for hunting, protecting our property and overthrowing our government.
Handguns are for murder and target shooting.

wow handguns are for murder but shotguns and rifles are not. I better get rid of my handgun before it goes off and murders someone. how do the police keep their handguns from murdering everyone
