Sen. Barack Obama picks up an endorsement today that should ring both on the national security front and in the land of the Hoosiers, where the Democrats face a primary vote May 6.
Lee Hamilton, a former longtime congressman from Indiana and co-chairman of both the 9/11 Commission and the Iraq Study Group, will announce his endorsement of the senator from Illinois today.
In Hamilton's three-decade career in the House, the Democrat served as chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committees.
In an interview, Hamilton said he views Obama as a champion of "the politics of consensus and not of partisan division.... I think he is driven by the search for the common good.''
The 9/11 Commission investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The bipartisan Iraq Study Group later made an assessment of U.S. policy in Iraq, recommending the start of gradual troop withdrawals. Hamilton now leads the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington.
Hamilton, who retired in 1999 after 34 years in Congress, is not among the Democratic Party's superdelegates, but becomes the highest-profile Indiana Democrat to back Obama before the state's May 6 primary. Sen. Evan Bayh and much of Indiana's Democratic leadership have campaigned actively for Clinton in a state where neither candidate is regarded as a natural front-runner.
"I begin by asking myself what kind of leadership the country needs at this juncture and I think, for me at least, the answer is that you want a candidate that will try to bring together a country that is very evenly divided, a country in which partisanship has been very sharp and to try to get a candidate who will create a new sense of national unity and will try to transcend the divisions within the country," Hamilton told the AP.
Of course, the down side of almost every endorsement is the opportunity it gives critics to point out the candidate's comparative credentials.
This just in from the Republican National Committee:
“It’s a shame that today’s endorsement by Lee Hamilton won't change the fact that Barack Obama’s scant foreign policy experience has led him to push for a policy of retreat from the terrorists in Iraq, a policy of sitting down with our enemies and a policy of proposing attacks on our allies,” said Chris Taylor, RNC spokesman.

I'll bite: Why is Hamilton a "nutcase"?

Ahh, yet another one to add to the growing list, which will only continue to growth through November.
Is there a Geraldine clone out there? If so: I thought they quite cloning slimey crawly things years ago.

Just another nutless liberal who couldn't leak his way out of a bag. Great pick-up for the empty suit, ghetto thug president wannabe. "I'm black, therefore, I'm entitled"

Obama said on Saturday he has two daughters one 9 one 6 and he doesn't want them punished with a baby or STDs. Obama equates having a baby as punishment comparing it to syphilis or some other sexually transmitted disease.

Hamilton used the phrase when describing Obama as the champion of "the politics of consensus".....wow, thats what I want...A leader who gets public opinion....What a crying shame, thats what a leader does...??? A leader takes a poll to find out what the people want..??? Bull...that is the very worst quality that a leader embraces...

Obama/Hamilton?
Here's how to answer the ignorant RNC comment:
“...push for a policy of retreat from the terrorists in Iraq (ARE NO TERRORISTS THERE, JUST INSURGENT IRAQIS), a policy of sitting down with our enemies (AS GOP GOD RONALD REAGAN DID) and a policy of proposing attacks on our allies (PROPOSING TO GO AFTER ACTUAL TERRORISTS, INCLUDING THE MAN RESPONSIBLE FOR 9/11 THAT REPUBLICANS LET GET AWAY.)
If this is all the RNC has on Obama, he'll do fine. Although the mainstream media will repeat these ignorant attacks day and night, never questioning them.
Running against the Republican media will be the hardest part. It brought down Gore and Kerry by repeating GOP lies.
Posted by: Paul | April 2, 2008 10:09 AM
I beleive that to be a good endorsement. As far as the RNC criticism, it's hardly worth commenting on, especially when their own candidate can't get the facts straight about Al Queda in Iran.

L. Hamilton is respected. He had a good reason not to pick Hillary. May the best person for America win.

I like the new look of The Swamp, its springy.
I think "nutcase" is a very subjective term. Define "nutcase". Who decides? Using what criteria? With what biases? With what information?
I think it is a terrific unbiased endorsement, this guy is outside the political need for favors or coattails from anyone and has been free to make an objective choice.

I'm not sure how much endorsements from outstanding and respected individuals who are experts in their area of concern help Obama, but they certainly don't hurt. And I don't notice any stampede of endorsers towards the Clinton camp.
For those of you that like to carp about Obama, I notice that the tone of his campaign has been entirely different from Clinton's. She tends to move in the direction of "I will do this"; while Obama is more "We will do this together". That may ring false with those of you with an agenda, but nothing in his background suggests anything different than exactly what he is saying. Go back as far as you like, and he has been consistent in including everybody who wishes to become involved in reaching a consensus and a solution to a problem. The other two seem more about me, me, and me.

Hamilton is not a nutcase. But since we're looking, how much nuttier can one get than with those comments by Chris Taylor and the RNC? 1) "... a policy of retreat from the terrorists in Iraq" -- the American people are no longer afraid to admit that we never should have been there in the first place and have said it's time to go; 2) "...a policy of sitting down with our enemies" -- the American people have seen the sham that a one-sided negotiation is not possible and see the non-results of pigheaded policies espoused by a deaf administration; 3) "...a policy of proposing attacks on our allies" -- the American people have awakened and see that dictatorships have no place as "allies" in the first place. The RNC response is tired but it's all they can come up with because they are victims of their own arrogance.

Something for my progressive friends. Now that Obama has been endorsed by Hamilton does that give you pause to consider his support by/of the 'establishment'.
How did you like that investigation/cover-up of 9-11?
Something to think about.

Looks like the Republican attacks are starting in ernest on obama. You can just imagine what chance he will have (not) against them if he gets the nomination. Just too much we don't know about obama, will come out like opening Pandora's Box.

OBAMA IS OUR SAVIOR. Barak and Reverend Wright are Right, God D*** america. Now is the time to rally around Barak and Michelle and make them proud! No more so called elections where typical white people vote, blacks have been held down too long! And news flash america, Barak is right, your typical white american is a racist! Obama will apologize to our Muslim brothers for arrogant american policies of hate and slavery. Only Obama can forgive an evil nation founded on slavery. REPARATIONS NOW!

Clinton supporters trivialize the endorsements of Obama and cheer the Clinton endorsements. Not much cheering lately. Rats abandon a sinking ship. Only the feeble ones remain.
Intelligent people know when to remain silent. But I won't falsely accuse them of that.

When did this become a forum for racism? In the first few posts alone, I've seen the phrases "ghetto thug" and "I'm entitled because I'm black", to describe Mr. Obama.
So the cowardly, Republican attack machine has no facts, and they're reverting to racism? Stunning, isn't it.
McCain keeps mixing up AlQueda being in Iran, Bush declared a war ending "Mission Accomplished" 5 years ago, and Republicans have the nerve to attack one of the more respected Foreign Affairs policymakers in the last 50 years?
This much is clear: look no further than Republicans to figure out who the unpatriotic, anti-American, party over country base is. The democrats might not be perfect, but at least we're not cowards & hypocrites, like our friends to the right of us.

Enjoy reading these comments, many times more so than the originating article. Is it just me, and my biases, or do "left field" comments usually lean to the right?

I'm voting for Obama because of his intelligence and worldly sophism, and because, when I was in law school, we studied the great treatises of Harvard's Lawrence Tribe,-- who gives an impressive endorsement of Obama in one of the TV commercials. However, I must admit, bigotry knows no color or creed, because if I am in a supporter crowd standing next to one of those idiots who refer to Obama as savior or messiah, I'm likely to supress a desire to punch his lights out. Why do blogs attract such extremism and negativity, instead of rational expression? Is it because no one else will listen and blogsites create captive audiences???

Obama is right, I would never want my child to get pregnant - SIMPLY BECAUSE SHE DIDNT HAVE INFORMATION. And by not informing the youth - you punish them - and our system. The good book says "if the blind lead the blind, they all fall in the ditch".

All of you Clinton supporters can turn a blind eye to the endorsements, the recent lack thereof on Clinton's part, and the LIES and deceptive, desperate measures that are routinely employed by the Clintons to get what they want. But you need to open your eyes to what's really going on! The Republicans are afraid of Obama as the Democratic nominee because they know that senile McCain will pale in a match-up with this luminary. Whereas, the Clintons with all their baggage cannot be trusted. McCain will soar to the presidency if he's up against the Clinton establishment! WAKE UP from that dream trip to Bosnia!!!

To respond to the objectors of this important and timely endorsement by Lee Hamilton of the Obama campaign, these objectors decline to tell us who the are for, only to tell us they are against Obama. Dear objectors, if you wont stand for something, you will fall for everything. Obama 08.

Cone is a founder of Black Liberation Theology. Rev. Wright's ministry, his beliefs about America, and about life itself are formed by his acceptance of the writings of James Cone.
Look at some quotes from Cone.
____________________
All white men are responsible for white oppression.
Theologically, Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man the devil.
Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him.
The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community ... Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy.

I enjoyed the GOP response. Very funny. Henry Kissinger liked to quote Moshe Dayan who said, "If you want to make peace, don't talk to your friends. Talk to your enemies."

Uhmm Karl, for a leader of a democratic nation, yes, that's what a leader does.
I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a government serve me for what the consensus think is best, rather than the government dictate what it thinks it's best for its people.
In fact, isn't leadership that doesn't take the consensus of opinion called a dictatorship? I don't know about you, but as a 'brown'-American in today's time, I'm VERY happy to be a citizen within the democracy of the UNITED STATES of America rather than the Kingdom of American.

Mr. Lee Hamilton is a revered figure with a track record as public servant to our great nation. It is inconceivable that some pro-Hillary folks posting comments are attacking him so viciously. John Elton's invitation for his Hillary fund-raising party proudly characterizes her as "bitch"--I kid you not. Are we supposed to be proud that we are looking at electing the first bitch to be POTUS? Hillary cannot tell the difference between sniper fire and a welcoming peace poem in Bosnia, the difference between lies and TRUTH. Thank you, Mr. Hamilton, for being a great patriot and helping us turn the page.

Stay tuned to a television near you on January 9th 2009 as we witness the swearing in of President Barack Obama.

Need more endorsements like this. Way to go.
When I read about politics in America, It makes me laugh. We are going to elect a Black president for the most powerful country in the world for the first time. And all that we are concerned with is which pastor was angry about the treatment of Blacks in America for the past 400 years.
We are not even concerned that the world is discovering that we have been going around the world preaching democracy when our country has enslaved and excluded a section of our population out of the presidency and public life for 400 years.
How can we justify to the Iraqies we are killing right now the millions of blacks who are in our prisons because the justice system favors whites?
How can we justify the fact that the measuring rod for anything in this country is the white man's way, and that even the preaching of an angry priest should be molded to please the white man?
How comic is that? Even backward china is laughing at american's claim on democracy when it is so hesitant to elect a black american as its president. Just search the web for chinese cartoons and you will see. In most dictatorships in AFrica, it is now the topic of the day for government newspapers: Would America accept to drink a potion of its own making?
Would america let democracy reign and elect a highly meritarious Black president, a community organizer and a teacher of constitutional law at one of its best universities, a young untinted politician, graduate from one of their best schools, son and grand son of white americans raised by the same and only a natural son of a black man he has seen 2 times in his adult life? That is the question. Is america that Biased? Is that what they call democracy? Then they should not give other countries a lesson. They should just get out of Iraq and other places and go home to their own bigotry.!!!
