Obama heads for "flyover" land: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Christi Parsons

Barack Obama is stumping out west this weekend, and it’s not all about the primary.

As Obama told North Dakota voters last night, he intends to try and pick up red states – “flyover states,” skeptical Democrats call them -- if he’s the party nominee this fall.

“Some people think the Democrats can’t win in North Dakota, so we shouldn’t put too much time in here,” Obama told the state Democratic convention. “I’ll tell you what, we didn’t fly over North Dakota. We landed.”

North Dakota wouldn't be the most likely state for Obama to pick up in the general election scenario, but broadcasting the message there might be helpful in the more gettable ones. It's also a useful thing to telegraph to Democrats, independents and new voters who like that "blurring the red/blue distinction" part of Obama's overall brand.

Plus, the Obama visit was important to Sen. Kent Conrad and Rep. Earl Pomeroy, two important Obama backers, even though the state's caucuses were held several weeks ago.

(Of course, Sen. Hillary Clinton is in there swinging, working to pick up delegates in convention balloting today. Technically, convention delegates don’t have to vote for the candidate their constituents selected.)

But Obama has moved on to Montana, where he’s holding a rally at the University of Montana mid-day and then heading to Butte for the state party’s annual dinner. Clinton will be there, too, speaking to a crowd of 5,000.

How about if Obama takes the time to visit the real "flyover" land... any Indian reservation while he is out there? University of Montana (Missoula) is just more of his elite base.

Huh?

After looking at the Clintons tax returns I'd say it's Hillary that better get out there in bluecollar land and convince the average middle class voters that they should vote for someone like her who is worth nearly $200 million.

And that isn't even including 2007, the Clintons still haven't released their 2007 tax returns and I doubt they will because they don't want the blue collar voters to know that they're stinkin' fatcat rich hypocrites.

Missoula as an elite base?? Have you ever been to Montana? We don't have an elite base (the ones who would classify are all registered to vote in California and back east). And, I would hate to bring it up to ignorant Nickberry, but Missoula borders the most populous reservation in Montana and man Native Americans were in the audience today when he spoke.

And stop refering to us as f**king flyover! At least our rivers don't smell like raw sewage like they do in Maryland.

Doh! Berrynick, do you really THINK that commoners can become President?
Look what they did to the only guy in this race who, without first becoming president, earned a lot of money by kicking the butt of corporate america--John Edwards?
I mean if you THINK there's not a ruling class--you're wrong. You and I are (Edwards and Hilary and Barack used to be) peasants. We get to pick who gets to be king more or less. Or queen. And the people we get to cboose from either did favors we can abide with or the dirty work we cannot abide with (Hilary and Barack, respectively)--or they broke into the castle and stole the cheese back from the greedy people who buy the kings and queens (Edwards).
got it?

Why doesn't he remember the voters in Mi. and Fl. while he is at it.

Hillarys shameless flip flop on pledged delegates and superdelegates by encouraging party elite to vote against the will of the people - “I believe strongly that in a democracy, we should respect the will of the people and to me, that means it’s time to do away with the Electoral College and move to the popular election of our president.” - Hillary Clinton in 2000. This kind of leadership found support in the notion of "false consciousness" that originated in the philosophical writings of Marx and Engels.

Hey... Berrynick.....

According to the Associated Press: "Neither Obama nor Republican Sen. John McCain have made their 2007 tax returns public, though both say they will this month." So why beat up the Clintons over that?

Also remember that until the last eight years the Clinton's never had much money... so calling them "fatcat rich hypocrites" is a ridiculous false assumption.

P.S. The public now has access to 30 years if Clinton tax returns.

I'm sure people in ANY state that's not New York or California just love it when a candidate calls their state "flyover."

Senator Obama speaks plainly on issues and to American values and hopes. But 109 million dollars may very well buy the US Presidency for the Clintons. Hillary loaned herself $5 million of her own money, "a good investment," in her own words, to further her campaign when it was running out of money. Then, she asked blue-collar working class women to send her their hard earned dollars because she claims she identifies with their class position. The Clintons pay over $40,000 each year just to have their houses cleaned, more than what working class women earn working 40 hours a week over a year. Like coming sniper fire, Hillary won votes in Ohio, Texas, and elsewhere by lying to blue collar workers about NAFTA and about her wealth. We will find that Bill was paid millions of dollars just to give talks for over an hour each time by corporations whose lobbyists also give money to Hillary. Hillary is turning our republic into an oligarchic dynasty. Dear Montana, please turn the page to save our democracy.

The real "flyover" territories are the nation's Indian Reservations... and that is the real point of my first post. Visiting the University of Montana in Missoula is NOT the same as visiting an Indian reservation. A university does not at all resemble an Indian community.

Obama often mentions Native Americans and even has lately talked about appointing a chief advisor on Native American Issues if he is elected President. But why wait and instead he should have begun to find out NOW for himself.

Also is Obama using "coded" language when he talks about Native American issues in the West? Is he talking to those who support Indian sovereignty or those who do not? He is very vague and leaves it up to his listeners to make their own interpretation.
