Obama mocks Clinton's beer-shot: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mike Dorning and updated with Clinton response

PITTSBURGH—Barack Obama ridiculed rival Hillary Clinton for a shot-and-a-beer photo op over the weekend in Indiana as he sought to counter the controversy over remarks he made about “bitter” feelings in small-town America.

Clinton downed a shot of Crown Royal whiskey, hoisted a beer and ate a slice of pepperoni pizza Saturday night at a restaurant in Crown Point, Ind., after spending the day branding Obama’s remarks “elitist.”

But in a speech to a forum on manufacturing issues, at which Clinton is scheduled to appear later this morning, Obama blasted support during her husband's administration for free trade deals, suggesting her connection with working-class voters was political theater.

“Around election time, the candidates can’t do enough. They'll promise you anything, give you a long list of proposals and even come around, with TV crews in tow, to throw back a shot and a beer,” Obama said, stirring laughter from an audience of steelworkers and steel industry executives.

“But if those same candidates are taking millions of dollars in contributions from the PACs and the lobbyists, ask yourself, who are they going to be toasting once the election is over?” he continued.

The Clinton campaign responded with a statement e-mailed to reporters.

“With all due respect, this is the same politician who spent six days posing for clichéd camera shots that included bowling gutterballs, walking around a sports bar, feeding a baby cow, and buying a ham at the Philly market (albeit one that cost $99.99 a pound). Sen. Obama's speeches won’t hide his condescending views of Americans living in small towns," Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said in the statement.

Obama also lambasted the Clinton Administration’s support for the North American Free Trade Agreement and Permanent Normal Trading Relations with China. And he condemned lobbying work on behalf of a free trade agreement with Colombia by Mark Penn, the Clinton campaign’s former chief strategist, who stepped down from the post for a less prominent role after Penn’s meetings with Colombian leaders were reported in the press.

“You can’t spend the better part of two decades campaigning for NAFTA and PNTR for China, and then come here to Pennsylvania, and tell the steelworkers you’ve been with them all along. You can't say you are opposed to the Colombia Trade deal, while your key strategist is working for the Colombian government to get the deal passed. That’s something you can’t do,” Obama said.

“That’s not respect. That’s just more of the same old Washington politics. And we can’t afford more of the same,” he added.

Obama campaign officials said the Illinois senator planned to mount a stronger counter-attack at an appearance later today at a meeting of newspaper editors in Washington DC.

Since Obama’s remarks to a closed San Francisco fundraiser that economically distressed voters “cling to” guns and religion were publicly disclosed last Friday, Clinton and her allies have fanned controversy over them . Clinton has portrayed him as “patronizing”and “out of touch” with working class voters.

On Saturday, Clinton shared childhood memories of shooting lessons her father gave her at their summer home near Scranton, Pa. A day later Obama mocked Clinton as presenting herself as “Annie Oakley,” the storied female sharpshooter from the Old West.

Obama advisers are hoping Clinton has overplayed her hand on the controversy.

“They’re persistently, aggressively and relentlessly trying to exploit this and in doing that making these ludicrous representations of herself,” said chief strategist David Axelrod.

Obama’s remarks were disclosed Friday by the Huffington Post.

“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," Obama said, according to the web site.

"And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not," Obama reportedly continued. "It's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Just a regular American gal kickin back with Crown Royal and a beer.

Wait a minute…Crown Royal?!? That’s Canadian whiskey!

Shame on you Hillary. If yer gonna get drunk to show how blue collar you are, you should do it with some good ol’ American booze. Guess you really are pro-NAFTA after all…

Obama should know all about candidates who can't do enough around election time. He's done nothing but promise everything.

Hey Axe!
As Mayor Washington said, Politics ain't beanbag! Looks like HRC hit a nerve. And you were dumb enough to take the bait! The apology last week was good. Turn the page. Your counterattack makes Barack look like an ordinary politician and continues the visibility of this skirmish. Not Smart.

Obama, MR OIL MAN!!!

Obama can't have his cake and eat it, too, or can he?

Obama should talk -- he IS an elitist and a hypocrite (cf. his trip to the bowling alley in Ohio; if that's not political theatre, then tell me what is).

If Obama is elected, he better use some of his change "magic" to fix the economy. If it remains weak during his presidential tenure, he won't be reelected to a second term. ... I'm hoping that's the case, so everyone can see what a one-trick pony this guy really is.

Hopefully blue collar is looking at Clinton's actions on NAFTA and Colombia trade deals closer than Obama's gaffe.

This guy is really getting tiring.
Your 15 minutes is almost up Obama, your holeir than Thou act has run it's course, just go away now. Please.

Wait - are we arguing over which millionaire is the elitist phony?

It's all theatre; and too often - it's "I'm better than you at X, because you're bad at Y" argument.

Where the hell is Al Gore when you need him?

And I suppose Obama isn't bowing down to the "little guy" by putting on a bowling exhibition?

When are people going to wake up and see Obama for what he truly is more of the same -- an elitist liberal Democrat. He has to "rescue" the "poor white people" who cling to their faith and their guns.

The Democrats are not the party of the poor or the middle class. Their leadership and supporters are better off financially (a'la Kennedy, Kerry, etc.) that 99% of the population. They are of the opinion that they are best qualified to "take care of" us who are obviously unable to take care of ourselves.

And this attitude is the major difference, philosophically, between Democrats and Republicans. The "kind and caring" Democrats tell you you're not able to take care of yourself. So give us your some of your money (via taxes) and we will design programs to take care of you. Republicans believe people should be self-reliant. The harder you work the more you can earn. Our current economic crisis is mainly the result of greed -- companies wanting to make enormous profit (oil companies and lenders) and consumers who are willing to borrow more than they can afford to pay back.

I'll take an older genuine hero (McCain) over an intellectual elitest know-it-all (Obama) any day!

See the future; party at the White House. Honorary guests; Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Rev. Wright, and Angela Davis.

Where are the portraits of George Washington, Tomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln? There just wasn’t enough room, so out with the old and in with the new; Huey Newton, Stokely Carmichael, and Eldridge Cleaver are our new heroes. Why is there a black panther where the bald eagle once stood?

If Hillary learned to chug boilermakers at her Pennsylvania-born daddy's knee, who are we to criticize her honoring a Rodham family tradition?

But Crown Royal may not sit well with the voters. She might want to try a Kentucky whiskey if she wants to stay on message regarding NAFTA...

Bourbon baby, not Crown. Is she a Royalist?

How many American jobs were lost when NAFTA adjusted booze tarifs?

She lost the sober vote!

:-)

You hillary-bots are annoying as hell. You fools think Billary cares about blue collar workers? Then why did the clintons sell your jobs? Why do we only vote the same two families into office. ITS RIDICULOUS. More than 2 families can handle this country, in fact the two who have taken control are running it into the ground.

strut2k--uh, she already WON the mid south primaries--weren't reading the newspapers--too busy 'bloggin'?
And, by the way--you don't win the GE if you don't win the Mid-South states.

Great article. Shows yet another example that this nationally unvetted candidate cannot be the top of our ticket. HRC is NOT the enemy.
What’s wrong with waiting 8 years, Obama and Gobamas? Wait for LBJ’s 3rd generation of Dixiecrats to kick the bucket.
I used to say that. And I may say that again.
But, give a listen to the audio posted by Mayhill Fowler (the not so pretty girl recently on the bus who savvily recorded the disturbing speech in California).
It’s a disturbing speech and shaking a ‘you are naughty’ finger at Hilary Clinton will not work.
In fact, the whole strategy for ‘dealing’ with his comment disturbs me even more.
Because, there seems to be a pattern emerging from not just the Obama campaign, but from the lips of Obama himself:
Exclude from the ‘movement’ or otherwise silence the non-enthusiastic or
‘offending’ middle aged white or elderly women.
Listen to the audio Mayhill recorded—and be sure to thank her and show your support for her. She will need it, if Tavis Smiley is any example of how people non-conforming to the Obama message of ‘hope’ get treated.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mayhill-fowler/obama-exclusive-audio-on_b_96333.html
His comments to the crowd that we need ‘new people’ in the Democratic party kind of chilled me to the bone. I find him very intolerant. I find his campaign intolerant. He responded to a question about his ability to really unite the party after such a divisive campaign by saying that “people get their feelings hurt” and they’ll be back (basically).
I don’t think that’s the case. People left his campaign because we felt it was using the wrong strategy and felt (but couldn’t quite put our finger on WHY it was fundamentally wrong-minded.
In his speech last night, in which he mentioned that ‘abstinence” and teaching appropriate behavior would be a good idea—heck—the people he BASHED last night have been speaking about this stuff for years! In fact, the Planned Parenthood crowd in Kalamazoo, Michigan (who later came to Chicago) managed to get a K-12 systematic sex education curriculum passed in the late 1970s. The JOHN BIRCH society worked to get it removed from the schools—and the Planned Parenthood clinic was actually bombed.
Would 70s style peaceful activists be part of the mature crowd Obama now wants replaced with his Gobama crowd? No. Not if he can help it.
That’s what it’s looking like to me.
Particularly when I heard Obama last night say talk about the pro-choice people he said were reluctant to infuse a “moral dimension’ into the abortion issue.
Patently false. Shame on Barack Obama.
Shame on him also for the recent clarification that in fact he DID attend a Muslim school (the public schools in Indonesia were like the community—women didn’t have to wear the veil, but…) seems like he was earlier being less than forthcoming. Even in liberal Islamic settings, women have a back of the bus status. I do NOT think Obama has been honest enough about this.
I think he’s sexist. Not just for the relentless bashing of Geraldine Ferraro, but for something really revealing in his speech last night, he ‘could not remember’ whether he’d had a conversation with his daughters about God. Well, if you’re in a 50’s throwback marriage where mommy is the main person interacting with the kids when they’re not in the expensive, enriching U of C daycare---then you perhaps are leaving a lot of that stuff to the wifey.
And perhaps that’s why Michelle (back when she let reporters cover her fund-raising) cut loose with the “ladies against women” style rant against Hilary (“How can she handle the White House when she ‘can’t manage’ her own house (sic).”)
The problem with sexism or any ‘ism’ is the elitism at its heart.
But there’s another reason why the Obamas must mature more before they’re at the top of the ticket.
They’ve let the newfound celebrity go to their heads.
Call it the ‘diva factor’.
Bonnie Raitt (you might remember she and Jackson Browne played a New Hampshire benefit for John Edwards’ superior approach—since adopted by Hilary Clinton—regarding nuclear power, greenhouse gases, and whatnot) chafed at being called a diva on a blues show last night. She said it reminded her of the old saw “Don’t look Miss Ross in the eye as she heads on stage.”
Barack Obama as diva.
Annie Oakley at least was a class act.

um, they're BOTH elitists...this isnt news (and so is mccain). they're both guilty of shameless, pandering photo ops and professing to be all in favor of whatever the locals do, although i must admit that hillary seems to lay it on much thicker than obama. the shot-and-a-beer was particularly groan inducing.

Maybe she was drinking in Bosnia too. That might explain her inability to remember anything she's done for the last 8 years with any sense of reality.

If Obama is an elitist, he's at least earned it through hard work. Those damn biracial, raised in a single parent home, worked as a communtiy organizer in the Chicago Project people are so high on themselves. Get real! Hillary is a delusional half wit that can't do simple math. Statistically, she cannot win this election and she cannot raise money like Obama can, even when taking lobbyist money. The best thing she can do for her country, her political career, and her party is to concede and support the next President now.

I wonder if we can get Hillary to shoot a bowling ball off the top of Obama's head?
They'll probably both need a few shots of Crown.

If a poll came out saying the Islamist voters were undecided, Hillary would be wearing a burka and Obama would be growing a beard, the very next day.

Two phonies. Instead of doing and saying every-and anything to lure in a vote, say what you mean and see who votes. Or- do you already know that if you do speak your true mind, no one will vote for you?

Jeff, exactly. It's funny watching the Democratic party splinter. It's even funnier to watch the far left liberals attack the Clinton machine they have spent the last several years defending. Evidently, the Clintons only turned evil after they decided to run against Saint Obama.

I fell to understand way so many people are upset with the way Obama descibe rural american. First if people stop to think about what "bitter" mean, they will find "something that turn out bad". Is the country isn't at it's worst point since 1998, are people losing they're jobs at a breaking neck speed, are people able to pay they're health bill and they're gas bill at the same time, are people homes still losing value, are corporate american getting rich and rural and getting poorer. That is "BITTER". When something turn out bad.

Hillary the chameleon

the only time hillary sticks with one color is when she is busy playing the race card

p.s. beer with whiskey and pizza = great role model to fat diabetic america

yeah that will help keep health costs down

the fun part is coming when HILLARY TELLS US ABOUT THE TIME SHE WAS WEARING A STEELERS JERSEY, AN EAGLES HAT, A PHILLIES CAP, A PIRATES MEDALLION, A FLYERS JACKET, SIXERS SHORTS AND PENGUINS UNDERWEAR WHILE SHE WAS DODGING SNIPER FIRE IN BOSNIA

Mr. Obama and his supporters should quietly go their way and ignore the "down to earth" antics of Clinton and McCain whose tax returns (maybe McCain as a pre-nuptial spouse hasn't released his returns) largely tell the story of their ability to understand the common man. Having said that and as an Obama supporter, all of the candidates are being hypocritcal when they knock free trade. You can argue that it has not necessarily been "fair" trade (especially with our banker by default China) but that can not obscure the reality that, as Tom Friedman has so eloquently set forth, "the world is flat" and it makes no difference whether your an abandon steel worker or an out sourced software writer, we must grasp the moment and educate our citizenry to compete at every economic level and no amount of sanctimonious prayer (religious pandering), obsession with gun ownership or bickering about abortion/ gay marriage, etc. will get us the economic leadership required. As it is with the silly war being waged in Iraq, no problem is solved until the mistakes made are fully recognized and acknowedged by those who made them and the reality of our failure to prepare our people for the massive change which has occurred in the world's economy rests with our government (ourselves) and we need to get on getting on because the world is waiting for no one!

I really fail to see what the big deal is about both Mr. Wright's and Sen. Obama's remarks. I see a bunch of people jumping on the media bandwagon to proclaim how awful these words are without examining the context in which they were said.

If you believe, as I do, that this country is in the crapper (because all those people of whom Obama spoke voted for GWB), they make a lot of sense.

People, it's not far off the mark to suggest that we are terrorists. We have gone into a country where we found NO weapons of mass destruction and waged a five year old war that shows no signs of ending, where we've killed thousands upon thousands of Iraqi civilians. How is that so different than what those hijackers did on 9.11?

And yeah, those middle/working class folks in small towns of whom Obama spoke ARE mad. They've been screwed...along with a lot of us in the big cities. Our tax money goes to places where we'll never see it, so the politicians and their friends can get rich. It's all so much more complicated than this, but I don't have time. I have to file my taxes, so more money can go to help people other than those in our own country.

Obama and his minister are merely calling a spade a spade. This to me is far less offensive than a candidate who takes a ton of special interest money doing shots to make the working class think she is like them.

The truth is, this is a pretty screwed up country at the moment. You can be patriotic, since it's in better shape than most, but let's not be blind to our many problems which Obama speaks of openly, rather than talking BS about what a great country it is. The truth hurts, doesn't it?

Wow, talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

Instead of making a true apology, Obama gives a half-hearted explanation, and then tries to deflect the blame on Clinton.

Forget being the candidate for change. Cheap shots are more effective.

All politicians are phony. You think you could shake hundreds of hands in one day and do that that everyday there after all along with everyone you meet: smile, act enthusiastic, and convince many of them to vote for you? That requires a bit of showmanship and a facade of being genuine.

Sometimes Obama is better at that facade and sometimes Hillary is. That facade may make you believe that your candidate understands you, and therefore will pass laws to benefit you. But the truth is, it does not. Lets look at past policy, lets look at history and then we will have a better idea of how our candidate may be as president.

We've seen Hillary's policy, we've seen her attitude, and if you don't want more of the same two families since 1981 in the white house ... then do something about it. And convince others to do something about it.

I fell to understand way so many people are upset with the way Obama descibe rural american. First if people stop to think about what "bitter" mean, they will find "something that turn out bad". Wait, isn't Obama an Illinois Senator also? So what was that about millions of dollars, and why isn't he representing his state better?

I'd like to see Obama down a shot. He looks more like a cosmo or white wine kind of guy.

At least she doesn't eat her hamburgers with a knife and fork. Tool!

Obama is really disingenuous to make comments about others making promises they later don't keep. He and his Kennedy, Durbin, Oprah, etal supports keep touting about his being against Iraq war from beginning. Then after I voted folr him for senator, the first thing he does is vote to confirm Condi Rice whose lies along w/Cheney, Runsfield, Wolfowicz, Bush etal started the whole thing. Obama then and still does agree w/Bushs' strategy there. He won't get another vote from me even if I have to vote Republican. At least the Repubs, as nasty as they are, don't hide or lie about that nastiness. Obama is not trustworthy!

For those Democrats who are undecided (I bet there's a whole lot of you), please keep this in mind. Obama has done NOTHING for Illinois. We are in worse financial shape now than we have ever been. Our school systems are in serious trouble and the state continues to run in the red. Not that he could have changed a lot being one person, but he could have TRIED. I don't know what HRC has done for the State of New York, but I know Obama is useless as an Illinois Senator. Just check out his voting record.

He thinks that he (Obama) is god's gift to the human race. All he has to do, is look in the mirror and see what a lying, stupid, JERK he is. As the campaign get's longer we see more and more of his REAL character. Lies, tricky talk. UN-American is what he REALLY is. The PIED PIPER is slowly meeting his waterloo. Let him put on the AMERICAN flag pin.

do as I say not as I do Obama. I say not a shot and a beer, I do a bowling appearance. I say she's Annie Oakley (ooooh, que scary,
a woman with a gun) I do campaigning with the NRA.
I campaign in SF and look down on god and guns, but I say I love the people. I say I am pro choice but I search for all the anti choice votes in Pa.

stop trying to guilt us into voting for you. you are a phony.

Obama is a major league
hypocrite.

Oh Herbie H--we ain't splintering.
We're just getting warmed up!
Obama and Michelle need to meet with Hilary and Bill. They'll realize they've been on the wrong path and join us in kicking McCain's you know what in the Fall.
I do think we're gonna need to jettison some of the architects of this ham-handed campaign and maybe some of the ones responsible for the Senate and IL race too.
We're good at figuring things, out, we Dems. Have a little more faith.

To all those critical of Barack Obama. You have been trying now for months to come up with some kind of dirt on this man. Well, nothing is sticking. You have tried your worst and nothing is sticking. You cannot harm this man. My advise to you is to stop shaking in your shoes and messing your pants. Join the winning team of Barack Obama, the next President of the United States of America.

Obama just said what he honestly thinks, and what's obviously true. A lot of rural blue-collar people vote against their own interests due to ignorance and lack of critical thinking skills. I guess what our country really wants is a guffawing panderer who will tell people what they want to hear, Hillary will continue on in the Bush tradition then... sickening!

Sen. Obama is absolutely correct when he made these statements. Children have been "unhappy" and they're bringing guns to school every other day and shooting and killing people. Perhaps, the parents are angry because they lost their jobs, homes, incomes.... Please to the voters out there... educate yourselves because the Clinton campaign is on to another gutter attack that they can't stop now. You would have thought that a former first lady had more taste than she projects. I could stick my finger in my mouth to let you know what I mean....

But take a moment and consider Obama's comments: We know that there are families out there who should not own guns, period. There is a lot of melancholy in homes to go around the U.S. a million times!

I praise Sen. Obama for his statements. Please people wake up!

Why so SERIOUS?

Hillary is just one of the boys!

Uh, the MILLIONAIRE boys, that is!

If Hillary gets elected, we'll all need a shot and a beer many times over!

Neither HRC or BHO are qualified to be President of the United States. With her we get politics as usual with no direction. With him we get no direction, but at least there's a remote chance we won't have to witness Clinton style politics. McCain isn't much better, but he is the least of the three evils.

Larz, it seems you are the one that can't do the math. Neither candidate can attain the 2,025 needed to win the nomination. Both need superdelegates to put them over the top. So why should HRC concede? Especially now, when folks are getting to see the real Obama, this guy is a fraud. It's a shame that he got this far in the game. Think it through people, HRC can beat McCain. BHO cannot. Simple as that.

It seems that too many are too caught up in political theater to actually make an informed decision on who to vote for. The comments on this page sound like an argument over who should win American Idol. I should be ashamed to even try and make a point about such trivial BS but I got no job and nothing better to do. Politics is theater, has been for ever and will be forever. No one gets nominated to run for president in this country who isn't an actor and a suck up--who isn't a sales man! They want your vote and they have to please everyone so of course they are disingenuous. Personally, all I care about is who will function best in the executive branch: who's a better diplomat and who will be open to the right ideas. I don't want to hang out with them and have a beer and I don't want to be their friend. I don't even need to relate to them. I just want competence, ability and willingness to move in the best direction for our county. Political posturing is a crock but its part of the game. Every politician IS and elitist and IS condescending, thats why they are in politics. What important is who will do their job the best. If any of the presidential candidates (McCain, Clinton, Obama) were the salt of the earth hardworking American type, they would be out doing something more constructive than pandering for your vote. Grow Up.

Hillary, stop! You're overplaying your hand! Let Obama just twist on his own words, girl.

I voted for you, but I want you to back away and just let him damange himself now.

Obama really stumbled with his arrogant comment about Americans who are bitter going to church, enjoy hunting, and being upset with illegals flooding into the country. The Obama apologists can make all the excuses they want but it showed his true colors. He is a Chicago Hyde Park Liberal that believes he is correct and intelligent and the looks down on the rest of the country. What the Liberal Left Wing Elitists of the Democratic Party do not realize is as long as they look down and despise Middle Main Street America they will continue to lose National Presidential Elections. They are out of touch with the majority of the country. This attitude helped George W Bush win two presidential elections. Remember Bush and his supporters were stupid and the Left Wing were intelligent.

Don't forget the Highland Park Mcmansion he got at a discount of $300K courtesy of T. Rezko! Obama does not even understand the dynamics of "rural" america anymore, even in his own state: for the last few years, Kendall County, IL has been THE fastest growing county in the entire US. Corns & soybeans, but democrats building homes on those fields! In fact, we elected B. Foster to replace D. Hastert! Sound like guns/religion folks?? He is out of touch with his own state;unless they are black inner city chicagoans, that is, and that is when it is time to get some "street cred".

While the two Democrats pounce on each other's misstatements and attach meaningless symbolism onto each other's words, the Republican Party quietly, patiently waits until neither Democrat will be electable after their campaigns die from a thousand cuts. Hillary! Barack! Stick to real issues and real policies!

Concerned Mother. Do you have any sons or daughters that are or will be in Iraq? It was Bush that put them there. The economy was at its very best, and the debt was down to 0, with a surplus when Bill was in the Whitehouse people were working and feeding their families. So what ground are you talking about. No President has every left office with the country in greater shape than when Bill was in office. Are you KIDDING? Your comment sounds like you slept through the Clinton years. You should use the name Sleeping "Beauty." Well maybe not "Beauty."

Now Hillary's going around attacking not only Barack Obama but also Al Gore, John Kerry, and the Democratic Party in general as "elitist," echoing longstanding Republican attack lines. Sounds like she's auditioning for John McCain's running mate. I don't know how she expects to win over superdelegates with that line of attack. They're Democrats, after all, and many are elected officials or party officials trying to win elections in contested states or districts. I don't think they'll be amused by Hillary's efforts to reinforce the Republicans' message. But then the Clintons never did care much about the Democratic Party. They've always been in it for themselves, Democratic Party be da*ned.

Obama is a con man. Nothing more.

He's destroying the Democratic Party. Keep watching.

The carping has descended to the level of a lover's quarrel. I feel like going into mourning as I watch the implosion of my Democratic party. All of this is guaranteeing that all of us are going to be stuck with President "Where Am I?" McCain and four more years of free reign for the Republicans to sell this country down the river. RIP, USA.

So now Jeff you've become an expert on liberals??? Seems to me the republican party sold it's soul to the devil. I'm amazed that you have time to research liberalism considering you have your nose crammed up a certain Arizona Senators rear every day. A better analogy would have been the Chicago Bulls (Obama being a basket-ball player for recreation) against the East Coast Sports Network favorite New York Knicks. Then again since Hillary claims such a wide swath of America as her home, who really knows where her allegiance resides??? I guarantee it is not with Crown Royal swizzling, beer drinkers or bowlers. Frankly I could care less which democrat is a better bowler or chats up that weeks voting base. What I do know is which of the two has the skills to do a good job in the Whitehouse. Then again I'm a Bulls fan. I also find it interesting how my republican friends here in The Swamp cry about everything like a bunch of bedwetting babies. What a bunch of girly men!!! p.s. when do suppose Hillary was in a duck blind of late??? After all I'm sure she's a card carrying member of the NRA.

It seems no matter how much Obama messes up Hillary somehow gets blamed for it by the media.

The bias is unbelievable - appalling - and cheats the American public out of the truth. Obama IS out of touch - end of story!

By the way Jeff the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers Dan Rooney endorsed Obama!!!

BEER WITH PIZZA AND WHISKEY - GREAT ROLE MODEL HILLARY - YOU WANT TO LEAD AN OVERWEIGHT DIABETC COUNTRY - YOU WANT TO GET HEALTH COSTS DOWN - THEN "REPUDIATE" YOUR TERRIBLE EXAMPLE STAGED FOR A FEW VOTES

why is it staged if it is pix of Hillary but not staged if it's bowling with Obama? Remember Barack, Hillary was doing shots with McCain. it's not staged, they just let the cameras in. have another glass of oj and start doing some work as our U.S. Senator cause you haven't done anything yet.

hillary has followed form and turned this latest "flap" into yet another in her never-ending series of panderfests.

pander, pander, pander - that's all she knows how to do. it's so transparent and disingenuous that i can't believe how many people willingly buy into it.

that's the great irony here - the true sign of elitism is shameless panderering, and hillary's pandering is about as shameless as it gets.

the real shame would be if obama lost the nomination by having the courage to say things that may not be politically expedient, but are dead-on true.

No matter what people say about both candidates all it comes down to is they are both bad choices. She pulled a Bush, proclaiming victory way too early. He is just way way way out there. His speech writers are great but his ideals are almost radical. We heard that from his wife, his pastor, and now him. Watch for the patterns since he really does not have much history to work off of. He is very pandering and looking to throw us a bone instead demonstrating change. Especially with his bill to take away tax breaks for oil companies to continue searching for new deposits. Maybe he does not realize that research and development is what drives industries. I think we all want what is best for the country but so far made bad decisions on emotion then with good sense has not limited the field to poor options. Probably the best choice for everyone would be McCain. He is closer to center then the others.

Heh heh. Hillary looks cross-eyed in that photo, which makes it funnier than her usual photo ops.

Next time you all get upset about photo ops, remember the ultimate photo op mistake by following the URL.

As a McCain support I am pretty happy to see these two implode. But I don't really want the election to turn out this way. I want all of them to be vetted and the truly best to be elected.

I will also note if the picture they are using of Hillary is obviously not a good one and you know for a fact it was used to make her look bad. I guarantee if they used a similarly pejorative image of Obama we'd here the racism cards flying through he air like knives.

nice try obama but i think we know the difference in lying that you never made these gun, bible carrying frustration staement with unwinding at a party.

youve beeen getting votes uder false pretenses for far too long. Now the rejected stone has become your chiefcornerstone(PA).

glad people are finally seeing the light.

also read APRIL 30 2007 article in New York Times.com (google it) and you will find OBAMA KNEW ABOUT THE PREACHER'S CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENT MORE THAN A YEAR AGO, AND HE LIED TO US THIS YEAR THAT HE DIDNT.

Now, If HRC had tossed back Sneaky Pete's,* I'd be more inclined to give her props.

http://hickeysite.blogspot.com/2008/04/john-mccain-kite-runner-cheques-on.html

* Sneaky Pete's - 16 oz. Can of ice cold Schlitz/Drewery's/Blatz/Old Style - sans 3-4 ounces (from the top) to which ice cold Chianti or Ripple Red or NightTrain or Wild Irish Rose is applied.

OK, so Obama can't bowl and Hillary has a drinking problem.

Obama's only mistake is that speaks the truth, even if it isn't a truth people want to hear. Hillary and McCain, and most other politicians simply try to talk down to voters and tell them what they want to hear. They shy away from the tough issues and the tough discussions because people might not like to hear it.

What disgusts me the most about this recent flap is that too many voters are simply going to see the headlines "Clinton calls Obama elitist" and take too much from that, without taking a deeper look about what he really said and meant.

When are we ever going to get over our obsession with wanting to have a drink with our fearless leader (a la the election of 00/04). These are not "everyday people", or they wouldn't be vying for the presidency. I think she looks ridiculous by the way... and Kathy it's Hyde Park (as in the S Side) and it was over $1MM, no bargain.

Hilary vs Barack..I just love it how they pummel each other!!!!

Welcome, President John McCain............

Go Sheriff Joe!!!!!

I really don't see the insult in what Obama said. People aren't "bitter" in the rural states? Please! There's so much bitterness in these economically downtrodden areas and that's a fact. And I think the bitter PARTISANSHIP that's shown on the cable news, a.m. radio talk shows and message boards is evident of this country's acrimony. And to say they turn to religion, guns and anti-immigration is just an observation not an insult. Elitist? What's elitist is assuming one is OWED the candidacy of presidency because her husband did it. Out of touch? How about making millions of dollars a year in speaking engagements and spending years as an insider of the Washington Beltway?

Pleas explain what "Out Of Touch" means. In a way, can't we say that about all the candidates? This is just a cliche that they throw around to distract voters from issues. How opathetic.

Uhem, To all the McCain supporters and Obama thrashers........this is so tiring to hear everyday. Just pray that McCain's VP has all the so called patriotism he has cuz he won't be around much longer after inauguration if he is voted into office anyway given the seriousness of his "hidden" health situation. BARAK the VOTE!! People, it's time for a change.

Man, there's a whole lot of anger in here.

Hillary has a LOT of experience doing shots and chugging beers. You would too if you had to live with Bill Clinton!

Yep he speaks the truth, when he thinks no one is listening.

You wrote "Obama's only mistake is that speaks the truth, even if it isn't a truth people want to hear. "

" Evidently, the Clintons only turned evil after they decided to run against Saint Obama."

I never thought I'd agree with Republicans on anything, but this is exactly right.

Is there no limit to their pandering....??? And yes, McCain isn't much better....what lousy choices, all of them....Maybe Rev. Wright is right..in these three candidates we (America) get what we deserve.

Ain't enuf whuskey in the world to make her look good.....

BO is doing what he normally does to divert attention from his lack of experience and qualification. He slings mud at Senator Clinton in hopes that we won't notice what a lying hypocrite he is but sorry, it's too late. He is unelectable and the super delegates know it. Vote smart vote Clinton

Phil Singer:
Only someone totally out of touch would say "feeding a baby cow" instead of using the not-so-technical term of CALF. In prepared remarks. Intended to show how his own candidate 'gets it' when it comes to rural America, small-town America, the so-called 'fly-over' states.

Team Clinton is so Unclear on the Concept that their daily talking points are nothing but unintended satire. More fun to read in the morning than the comics - as long as there's no chance they'll be running the country next year.

No wonder Hillary feels at home on SNL.

"OBAMA SPEAKS"

IT'S 3AM AND WHERE IS MY VICE PRESIDENT?

I wouldn't put money on that. The guys is not only a dottering old fool but a loose cannon. I wouldn't trust that fossil with pumping my over priced gas.

Let's talk about one of our most elitist presidents ever:

1) born an only child to one of the wealthiest families in New York;

2) grew up in an atmosphere of privilege; he learned to ride, shoot, row, and play polo and lawn tennis.

3) he took frequent trips to Europe when he was young where he learned German and French;

4) went to Harvard, where he lived in luxurious quarters;

5) went to Columbia Law school, where he never finished, but he did pass the New York bar and practice as a corporate lawyer;

6) had numerous extramarital affairs;

7) won first political election on the wealth, prestige, and power of his family name.

Who is this philandering elitist who was out of touch with the common man and could not have possibly done anything to cure the ills of working class society?

Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

ok... the whole idea of "who I would I rather want to have a beer with" is ridiculous. Maybe I'm out of touch, but I DO want an intelligent person running the country. Possibly someone so freakin smart that they are an eleitist! I don't want Joe Schmo (Bush) running this country because I feel comfortable downing beers with him in my backyard while throwing horseshoes. I would hope that I'm not the only person who thinks this way.

This is not a popularity contest... We're not voting for Prom King and Queen people!

And again... I made this point last week. His comments in SF were spot on. Stop attacking the man for saying something we all NEEDED to hear.

The Anti-Obama movement is bordering on the LUDICROUS at this point. First off the Democratic party is the party of the working class little guy, and the socially liberal. For ANYONE running in this campaign to call Obama an "elitist" couldnt pass the smell test after an oz of cologne.

Let me get this right. HRC who together with her husband has made almost $110million in the last 6 years and John McCain who is married to the billionaire heiress to the Budweiser fortune just called a mixed-race man who was raised by a single mother in modest circumstances an elitist? .......... am i missing something here?

To further that point is the Republican party really trying to paint itself as the "working mans party" LOL what the hell is going on here i couldnt even make this stuff up. I will just drop some names: Halliburton, Boeing, Lockheed, Blackwater, Exxon-Mobil, Connoco-Phillips, Shell, need i continue? Let us all just step back and remember that the executives of these companies wont be voting Democrat in the elections and its not because they support the middle class.

Anyone that would dare call Obama an elitist vs ANY of the candidates has serious issues with facts, and by that i mean ignores simple and blatant truths.

Can I have a show of hands from people in economic hardship and families with loved ones in Iraq that will care about "bitter" comments, what Jeremiah Wright said or what Hillary Clinton drinks?

Anyone?

Bueller?

Hilliary is a poor loser.

I'm no Hillary fan, but...at least she looks like she "kind of" a real person....Hussein Obama has no clue as to life in real America; an eloquent speaker, talks a lot like a lawyer (speaks great, says nothing)...whatever happened to family values?....McCain?

it was the press that didn't get what he said. i would have gone much further. yes, americans are bitter and po'd. let's be clear about that.

clinton has a smile of a jackal. tell us some more lies hillary. i've got one for you... "i 'm the best choice for president because i was president in a previous life" .... what will she make up next?

Oh my god what a drunk.

Just what we need a drunk President

Hillary be a man and bow out of the race.

Ha Ha Ha!

All the bickering in the democratic party is going to get you what you desire least, another republican in the White House. I do not pledge allegiance to any party in particular, I vote for the best person for the job. Was looking for a change in the White House, but all this incessant bickering among the Dems is driving me to vote for McCain.

Right on, Sojurner Truth. I fear readers won't take the time to read your very eloquent, informative comment because it is so long, but please, readers, just skim it and you'll get the gist of it.

I"m an Illinois resident and I, too, was an Obama supporter (donated a lot of $ to his campaign) until about late January. The rhetoric of his supporters and surrogates started to turn me off (and turn my stomach), and then I began to be turned off by the candidate himself. He has been able to stay above the fray because the media pundits see him as their darling (Matthews, Oberman, Brazile, Charlie Rose, Al Hunt, Russert--and too many more to list) and do his dirty work for him--bashing Clinton, humiliating Clinton, reminding viewers repeatedly of every mis-step and mistake by Clinton and her campaign.

I'm getting so tired of Obama attacking Hillary every time he does something wrong. She is the best person for the job of President of the USA!
Go Hillary!

She looks so phony in this picture. She's the worst candidate of all. Go away Hillery, go back under the rock from which you crawled and let Obama lead the way. I'm voting republican anyway:)

Obama was right to mock her. What on earth was she doing -- sipping her shot like it was a fine merlot? She didn't even drink it... she's clearly shown with 4/5ths of a shot after her "sip".

Hey, I'm not saying she needs to be a hard drinker but don't pretend to be salt of the earth if you're scared of a shot of whiskey.
