Barack Obama, asked if he is “tough enough’’ to take the heat of the right-wing when (or perhaps if) he starts pulling troops out of Iraq as president, said: “I come from Chicago.’’
The question was posed on the Hardball Campus Tour, with host Chris Matthews of MSNBC asking if Obama is as tough as Vice President Dick Cheney when it comes to ignoring public opinion about the war – Matthews’ phrase, please.
“You don’t ignore public opinion,’’ Obama replied. “You try to shape public opinion.
“In terms of my toughness, look, first of all, I come from Chicago,’’ the Illinois senator said. “And you know, politics in Chicago, as it was once said, is not tiddlywinks. It's not beanbag. You know, it's a tough town.
“ But what I've been able to do is to rise politically without compromising my ethics, without compromising my principles,’’ Obama said. “I think during the course of this campaign, we're going up against a pretty tough political operation with the Clintons. Nobody's ever accused them of being -- being soft. And so far, we're doing pretty well.''
“I am very confident that when it comes to issues like Iraq,’’ Obama added, “a war that I stood up against at a time when it would have been politically convenient to be for it, or at least to be silent, when it comes to tough issues like talking to leaders we don't like, something that defies some of the conventional wisdom in Washington but I feel very strongly about, then I'm going to stick to my guns and try to persuade the American people that we need to go in a new direction and fundamentally break with the failed policies of the past seven-and-a-half years.’’
In the show, staged at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, Matthews asked Obama: “What’s the real difference in how you would get us out of Iraq from the way Senator Clinton would get us out?
“Well, first of all, I think it does bear mentioning that Sen. Clinton voted for the war,’’ said Obama, who opposed the U.S.-led invasion when Congress authorized it in 2002 but was not yet a member of the Senate. “And I say that not because it is something that's in the past, but it points to judgment in the future.
“I think Sen. Clinton was much more cautious,’’ he said. “She got swept up in the arguments that were made by the Bush administration. And I think that what you want in the next president who has confidence and judgment to move in a different direction.
“She has said she wants to pull troops out, and I take her at her word. I intend to pull them out, as well. And I think that we both agree that you have to be as cautious getting out as we were careless getting in. She has, though, suggested that she wants to leave troops in to blunt the influence of Iran in Iraq, that that would be one of the rationales or justifications for how she would structure forces inside of Iraq.
“I think that's a mistake,’’ the senator said. “ I think that that's mission creep. That is not the original reason why we went in. Originally, it was because of weapons of mass destruction. We know those aren't there. It was because Saddam Hussein was a terrible tyrant. He is now gone. We should not be maintaining permanent bases in Iraq. We should have no combat operations.’’

Comments
A run-of-the mill Chicago, Cook County Machine hack... yep. Just what I've been saying all along. “ But" said the Messiah, " what I've been able to do is to rise politically without compromising my ethics, without compromising my principles...’’
Really? What about your accepting money from lobbyists when you tell us that you don't? What about you 17-plus year personal and financial relationship with indicted "fixer" Tony Rezko?

Obama let's get something straight, your not from Chicago and your not tough. You weren't born and raised in Chicago your just another carpetbagger. I have seen you bowl and now I would like to see you throw a baseball.I bet you throw like my sister.
Posted by: BCC | April 3, 2008 8:31 AM
I've got more of Chicago in my little pinky then you have in your whole body.Bcc has it spot on, you are a carpetbagger!.Hillary Clinton, and nearly the whole Kennedy clan, it seems to run in the dems.

My five year old could have bowled a better game than Obama. And Obama is not originally from Chicago. He bowls like a weenie.
Posted by: Depot Jim | April 3, 2008 10:03 AM
To MJ:
Old news, pal. He gave away the Rezko money a long time ago. The "Rezko" connection has been debunked time and again. You'd know that if you read the news in the last year.
to BCC:
Being either born or being raised in Chicago has nothing to do with what he's said. He's referring to the historically racist political machine that is Chicago politics. Unless you're pleading ignorant to that one.
Paul:
Seriously, carpetbagger? You're using BS slang from 2 centuries ago? You're not even using it correctly. Look it up. Might as well call him a fop, a dandy or a lobster-backed Tory. Get real. People in this century can now re-locate with ease, and it's easy to do so. Get over it.
I feel sorry for those who are so indignant and ignorant about Mr. Obama. It's logically clear as day he's vastly superior to McCain or the Clintons or the Bushes. He was a senior lecturer of law (in short, professor) when our current president doesn't even know how many amendments there are to the constitution.
Posted by: james | April 3, 2008 10:06 AM
Just so I'm clear Mr. Jaeger and BCC. You can't claim to be from Chicago if you go to college there and begin your career and start a family in Chicago....yeah that makes sense. Let me guess you aren't American if you aren't born in America either. Does that mean John McCain is not an American? Man you're dumb.
Posted by: john | April 3, 2008 10:08 AM
Ahh, just the kind of weak reactions that I would expect to read from HRC and McCain supporters. Obama is clearly a strong and tough candidate, and ten fold to any puny blogger that don't have the guts to run for political office. Who let you weenies out of the closet?
Posted by: Xcellentform | April 3, 2008 10:15 AM
If you're going to throw insults around, you should at least know what they mean. "Carpetbaggers" were Northerners that moved South during Reconstruction. You can't move to the North and be a carpetbagger.
Uneducated people for Hillary!!

The "Rezko" connection has been debunked time and again. You'd know that if you read the news in the last year.
Posted by: james | April 3, 2008 10:06 AM
Have you read the news... ever? What exactly has been "debunked"? He gave up some of the money only after it became a public scandal that could no longer be ignored. I'm not impressed.
Meanwhile, the fact remains that Obama has had a 17 year relationship with Rezko, he did favors for Rezko (certainly looks like quid pro quo) and he even went to Rezko to buy a house after he knew full well that Rezko was under indictment. None of that has been debunked. Not "time and again"... not even once.
Posted by: MJ | April 3, 2008 10:50 AM
By the way, James, I noticed you didn't dare touch upon the point that Obama takes money from lobbyists while claiming that he doesn't. So I guess that's OK, right?
And "Carpetbagger" is not a term form two centuries ago, but from the Civil War reconstruction era -- the 1870s-80s. Ever read any history? And it's usage is still current.
Posted by: MJ | April 3, 2008 10:59 AM
John and James: If your not born and raised in Chicago your not a real Chicagoan. If you were born here you would get it. You remind me when I'm on vacation and I see someone wearing a Cubs or White Sox hat and they say there from Chicago when I ask what neighborhood they say oh i live in Downers Grove. Your from Downers Grove IL. NOT CHICAGO.
Posted by: BCC | April 3, 2008 11:00 AM
I bet that Chris' leg started tingling again. Oh, the glee of being near the Obamessiah!
And moron posting as if you can correct another poster the "Rezko connection" has absolutely NOT been debunked time and again. Just last month Obama had to go crawling to his favorite media outlet, the Libune, to explain that he just "found" more money from Rezko that he hadn't returned.
The man was his political patron for 20+ years and Obama lied that he never visited the property the two bought together before purchase. Something's rotten on the South Side and Obama's lies and obfuscations about Rezko have done nothing to clear it up.
Posted by: Jeff | April 3, 2008 11:12 AM
It's easy to call people names (think school playgrounds). But it's a lot harder to ignore facts (think high school grads). That's why I support Obama. That's also why most people support Obama. He doesn't call people names. He talks about facts and issues that affect you, me, and all the other people in America. Go Barack.

Listen to all of you. Those who love Obama and those of you have pride in being from Chicago. Tsk, tsk!
Racist politics in Chicago? Chicago has had an integrated City Council all of my adult life. So where is the racism in politics here? Unless you are saying that we are still not better off even though each race or ethnicity has their own representatives. Sometimes things get fixed and the previous victims fail to notice but rather cling to what was instead of what is. I think you should realize that politicians are politicians regardless of race or ethnicity.
I think Obama is free to take the label of Chicagoan given that his rise in politics was here and during tumultuous times. That is what he is referring to. But growing up on the South Side, I feel I am allowed to claim the toughness that we are known for, which very well could be our tolerance of all of our politicians, ALL OF THEM! And he is a stinky bowler but what do expect? He's been a busy man.
Posted by: JGo | April 3, 2008 11:16 AM
Striclty in terms of accuracy Obama is not from Chicago. Sorry but a Harvard educated Lawyer living in upscale Hyde Park is hardly considered tough. He is from Hawaii. The funniest part is where he says he has not compromised his ethics. That is funny. How did the letter helping Rezko get $14 mill in state funding in Obamas district not compromise his ehtics. Bottom line is you do not get to the top of Cook County Politics w/out compromising your ethics.
Posted by: Vinny | April 3, 2008 11:26 AM
If only you "Chicagoans" knew how silly you sound. This is the 21st century. Ooh, you're so tough.
People move all over. Try to tell McCain he's not a Nevadan. Maybe Hillary's not a New Yorker.
Dorks

JGo, please look at the mess of corruption, nepotism and race politics that is the Cook County Board for an example of how Chicago politics don't work.
Jay, no one is worse at name calling and telling lies in this election than Obama. First he returned all of Rezko's money and then he didn't. You tell me which time he was lying.
The line he continues to repeat about McCain wanting a "hundred years war" is taken so far out of context that the AP, factcheck.org, and the Annenberg Public Policy Center have all taken Obama to task for it and asked him to stop lying.
In a recent ad in Pennsylvania Obama says he "doesn't take money from lobbyists and oil companies." The lobbyist thing is such a blatant lie that even the DNC has asked him to stop using it since he has 9 lobbyists working on his national campaign and takes money from lobbyists wives and law partners who aren't federally registered lobbyists who can be tracked.
The oil company thing is probably the single biggest lie told this entire election cycle and that includes "landing under sniper fire."
Obama has accepted more than $213,000 from individuals who work for companies in the oil and gas industry and their spouses. No candidate is allowed to accept money directly from an oil company so it's difficult to see what Obama means by "take money from oil companies" other than taking it from their employees and spouses.
No presidential, House or Senate candidate does. They can't: Corporations have been prohibited from contributing directly to federal candidates since the Tillman Act became law in 1907.
Obama has, however, accepted more than $213,000 in contributions from individuals who work for, or whose spouses work for, companies in the oil and gas industry, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. That's not as much as Sen. Hillary Clinton, who has received more than $306,000 in donations from people tied to the industry, but it's still a substantial amount.
You will be HARD-pressed to find a bigger lie than this whopper in this election cycle.
Here's factcheck.org to set you straight:http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/obamas_oil_spill.html

I think all this is Obama tough enough talk is racist. Hear me out. First of all he is intelligent, kind and even tempered. If Obama were a white man would people be saying that he's not tough? People often mistake kindness for weakness. I never understood why. Name me one day that Obama has shown weakness? Has he cried and stomped around like Hillary? No! Does he lose his cool like McCain everytime someone says something he doesn't like? No! White people don't realize how racist they are being. Because Obama is a black man that whites are not AFRAID of then he must be weak and not like all the other scary black men. It's racist and I'm tired of hearing it. Finally, find me something that comes out of Obama's mouth. I don't care what everyone around him think. Nobody can control the beliefs of someone else.
Posted by: Carol | April 3, 2008 11:42 AM
look at some of the comments here that talk about how bad of an athlete obama is. thats the mark of a good president? if you can make the plate on opening day. if you can bowl over 100? so bush meets that criteria and he will go down as the worst president ever.
he did nothing to stop the 9/11 attack even after receiving the pdb telling him al quida was trying to use planes to attack us. on the way out clinton warned him that al quida was his biggest challenge. (can't listen to that warning because it comes from a dem) clinton wasn't able to get bin laden but he at least tried. read the 9/11 report tell me what steps bush took. get a pen out keep score as you go through the report. guess bush was practicing throwing his curve that week he got the pdb. lying to get us in iraq where we are stuck and the many lives and $2.4 trillion wasted. soldiers on 4-5 tours because of his decisions and the people that he listened to. meanwhile creating more terrorists by this decision. an economy in recession, and he hardly even comments about it. record federal deficeits. of course being an (ex?) oil man the oil industry is doing just fine. lousy leadership but accurate to the plate.
i'll take the guy that can't throw a baseball but can think and make smart decisions. wonder what fdr's bowling score would have been?
wake up knuckleheads!

I was born and raised in Chicago where I lived most of my life. I retired to Georgia. The reason I called Clington and Obama carpetbaggers is for the simple fact, how do they have any idea of what the needs are of a particular city or state if they have only spent enough time there to campaign?.

I'm from Chicago and am willing to confer the title of "Chicagoan" to Mr. Obama.
It's better than Hillary, who is from Arkansas (if she's in the south), or from Pennsylvania (if she's in Philly), or from New York, or wherever suits her best interests at the time.
She wants to be from DC, but no one with their right mind would send her back there!

Jeff (11:35), Vinny, MJ:
You guys need to grow up. Period. If Obama is corrupt, it will catch up with him like the others. He has made his tax returns for 7 years public, there is a no nonsense prosector investigating Rezko and prosecuting him right now. Obama's name has not been mentioned yet. He has sat for three hours in from of the Chicago editorial board and "answered all their questions"
Also, get this straight... By your theory, Lincoln was not from Illinois. Clinton is not from New York. Arnold Schwarzenegger is not from California. I can go on and on. Obama was born in Hawaii and is now a Chicagoan. That is why he represents Illinois in the Senate.
Posted by: John Paul Telhomme | April 3, 2008 12:44 PM
Carmentexas the knucklehead, to answer your question, no I won't hear you out. The idea that it's racist to question whether a first-time senator is tough enough to handle the rigors of the presidency is just plain stupid. People said the same thing about Bush and Kennedy and both of them had more experience than Obama. You're just another in the long line of Obama supporters who get indignant when anyone tries to question ANYTHING the Obamessiah does.
We already HAVE a boy governor here in Illinois. Here's what the people of his own party say about him:
"I would not have filed it but for the dismal performance of this governor," said Rep. Jack Franks (D-Woodstock), the bill's sponsor. "Our state is dysfunctional. . . . We are stuck at an absolute impasse because the governor refuses to lead and refuses, frankly, to show up for work. He won't govern, and he can't govern."
Let's not send another inexperienced Chicago machine politician to Washington. Blagojevich's mess can be fixed with a recall. There's no way to recall Obama from Washington in less than four years.
Posted by: Jeff | April 3, 2008 12:52 PM
Just a note on the Rezko stuff... Obama did a full discussion of this with the Chicago Tribune, online here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/chi-obamafullwebmar16,0,7569169.story
Seriously, the man's basically honest, and genuine, in addition to being reasonable and charismatic.

This is why Obama can't win in Nov. The minute someone doesn't love him they are called a racist. I have news for you Jesse Jackson Sr., Jr.,Bobby Rush and all the black politicians who have been around a long time in Chicago don't like Obama either because after years of fighting for the people in their districts they all got knocked out of the box by Obama. One speech in Boston at the DNC and then elected to one of the highest offices in IL. he became the man and that my friends REALLY UPSET the other politicians I just mentioned. So if you keep crying wolf about race you are making it easy for the superdelagates to vote for Hillary.

They just published the pork book yesterday (tacking junk on important bills). Looks like Mr. Obama and Ms. Clinton had lots on their record. Mc Cain - zero!

By you logic Jeff, McCain should not be President because of the disgraced AZ Congressman Rick Renzi who was most recently indicted by the Dept of Justice for federal extortion, fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.

James and Jay and you other Obamabots,
Perhaps you should REALLY look at your candiadates background. From the political standpoint, how do you think he has risen so quickly? Emil Jones made sure he had his name on all those bills so he could look great. Emil is quoted as saying he was going "to make a senator". Mr. Obama is a puppet and the corrupt Illinois politicians are his puppet master.
Posted by: Paul | April 3, 2008 2:56 PM
Oh give me a break you provincial "not from Chicago' hacks. I was born and raised in Chicago Heights, but have lived here on the near northwest side of the city since 1992 (and have yet to be tossed out of the northside despite my baseball leanings) and would probably get lost if I drove down as I've not attempted it in fifteen years. So yeah, I'm claiming Chicago as my own, and there isn't anything you schmucks can do about it.
This isn't the 50's, anymore, that kind of silliness is just irrelevant.

He lied about returning all the money Rezko returned to him and he lied about buying the house and land with him. How am I or any other voter to tell what else he's lying about? Sorry, I don't consider that "basically a good man." Far from it, in fact.

-----CLINTON SLEEZE FATIGUE WILL INVIGORATE GOP, DISPIRIT DEMOCRATS AND SINK DEMOCRATIC TICKET-----
-----OBAMA/EDWARDS TO WIN-----
It is possible that Senator Clinton is the best candidate. However, even though many may like the policies that Senator Clinton proposes, they should also consider her record, just as Senator Clinton insists.
.
The last Clinton Administration, when faced with the fact that protection rackets where assaulting, torturing and murdering people with poison and radiation, chose to avoid its responsibilities to incarcerate the criminals and to protect the citizenry.
.
Instead, they made a deal with the criminal gang stalker protection rackets to leave them alone and to consequently abandon the citizenry.
.
Do we want a President who sells out the citizenry for votes?
.
Do we want a President who sends a "crime does pay" message to society?
.
Would you vote for a President who signed nonaggression deals with the KKKlan or the Nazi party? Gangs that torture with poison and radiation are much like the KKKlan and Nazi Party.
.
We do not need a sellout President. We need a principled leader President.
.
If you are one of the few who do not know what the above refers to, do a web search for “gang stalking” to see the tip of the dirtberg. Please do it before you decide to reply to my post. Here let me make it easy for you: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22gang+stalking%22.
