Barack Obama's Allentown office was burglarized this week, and multiple laptops and cell phones were stolen, an Obama campaign aide said today. A police spokesman confirmed the incident, but couldn't provide details today because reports are kept in the department's records depository, which is closed weekends.
An Obama aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, said "a couple" field laptops were taken out of the office at 1233 Linden St. The computers have demographic information that the campaign uses to target voters. "A couple" cell phones were also taken, the aide said.
Police spokesman Capt. James Stephens confirmed the break-in, but could not confirm details of what was taken because the records office is closed on weekends. When and how the break-in occurred also remained unclear. Stephens would only say that it happened "a couple days ago." The Obama campaign declined to comment officially on the incident.
Both campaigns have had their share of incidents at field offices during the race. Obama field offices in California and Iowa have also been broken into. And late last year, a man took campaign workers hostage at a Hillary Clinton field office in Rochester, N.H.

Wow. Reminiscent of when Ronald Reagan's thugs stole jimmy carter's playbook.

Where is Karl Rove again?

Question is: who benefits from stealing laptops from 3 different Obama offices ?
Posted by: Angela | April 19, 2008 11:38 PM
Hillary has studied the Karl Rove playbook very thoroughly.
Thus far in the campaign, Obama's approach has been far more successful, toppling the prohibitive frontrunner.
Let's hope that Hillary Rove won't sully him enough to block him from winning a lansdlide in November and from so bringing enough Democrats into Congress as to be able to carry out in his first term the urgently needed changes which will restore this country to greatness.

Not good.
Hope they catch whoever did it.

this is a old trick that politicians use to get the goods on there competion, its hillarys people.martin omalley used this method to save crocked white cops when he was major..this is another reason i will not vote for hillary, they are unethical

Both campaigns have had their share of incidents...? The only difference is Obama had nothing to do with the hostage incident. Obama's site's been hacked this weekend, and campaign offices have been broken into. If these are Hillary's political tactics, we don't want her in the White House!

they are such cry babies...there way or no way...barack obama should leave the campaign and let hill be our next president.

I HOPE the burglars will CHANGE their ways and return the equipment. YES THEY CAN.
Alternatively, I hope they get caught and sent to jail.
Is there such a thing as Swampgate? Just wondering....

This was usually a republican trick. It is apalliing to see eithe McCain supporters or Obama supporters on here accusing Hillary. I'm thinking it's more likely young Obama supporters are blaming Hillary's operation falsely.
Question--how did Keith Olbermann's show get the tape of the convestation between George Stephanopoulous and Sean Hanity?
Maybe the laptops were taken by an inside law enforcement operation to investigate this?
Why is there no one on this blog complaining about intercepted conversations?
Personally-whichever side does this sort of thing--I"m agin 'em.
Not that that matters. We;ve had an overly long campaign for the top. Dirty, meet dirtier.
Is either one of these candidates still capable of winning in the Fall? Or does that matter anymore?

hmm,
I think the press is finally catching on to the Rovian tactics used by the Obamas. They've been doing this since Iowa.
Hope/Change?
naaaa, I don't want a dictator.
Go Hillary!

Maybe that's how they were able to hack in and disrupt Obama's website last night.

I really dislike hillary clinton, my disdain for her could not be explained in this comment alone. However, I'm not so sure she had anything to do with this ramsack. People have been stealing laptops forever. And Rose, there is nothing "Rovian" about being the victim of a burglarised office and having a hijacked website. I feel bad for the kids who worked at the allentown office. They were doing good work, I know the work they were doing. Registering voters primarily (in a nonpartisan matter), and going to some of the sketchiest neighborhoods to ensure everyone is registered. If this is the doing of HRC, then I feel sorry for her as well, because it confirms her unjust, tenacious, and slightly frightening cling to power.

Typical Obama tactics..Blame Hillary..There are way to many scary things in Obama's clset.. This guy has to be investigated..

@Where's Al Gore- " Question--how did Keith Olbermann's show get the tape of the convestation between George Stephanopoulous and Sean Hanity?" -
it's this new fangled invention called a radio show. hannity has one, george was a guest.
funny how you can assign blame on everyone but hillary, the one person with the greatest motive and most to gain from these acts.

Obama is way out of line does he really think we're gonna believe this, everyone knows he's just trying to scare up votes

Typical. You obviously do not know much about the Clintons long list of scandals. How many lies does she have to tell, before you see that is part of her campaign to make people like you think, Obama is guilty of her crimes?
What would be gained if Obama did this? His supporters already know Hillary lies (about special interests, for one) he does not need to stoop to dirty Hillary politics to win support.
Think long and hard on Bosnia and study the facts. One time sleep deprived, for one, is a lie. She creates tall tales like that to back up her claims of experience. Think on it.

hmmmm....Obama's office broken into 48 hrs before voters go to the polls. Somethings not right!!! Hiiiiiillllllary....do u know something, c'mon?...lol

Why would Obama have to break into his own office? Hillary has been taken hints from Karl Rove and he pulled something like this in Texas. George S. was on the Sean Hannity radio show and he told George to ask Obama the question, George replied I am taken notes right now.

Where are Woodward and Bernstein when we need them?
Posted by: Chris | April 20, 2008 2:45 PM
I also find it interesting that the "bitter" controversy was started by an Obama "supporter" who was offended while on a non pay reporter mission at a private fundraiser in Marin County. She had previously contributed to Hillary's campaign.
Another question I have is: how come the fact that Obama is outspending Hill, is seen as a weakness for him, and the fact that he has raised so much more money than her, from so much wider a base of people is never mentioned?
Hopefully we can rise above this garbage.
Gotta go now, and make some calls for Obama.

I expect the computers were password-protected. With sensible security, they are pretty much useless to most people.
It is interesting how often Democratic HQs are burglarized. How many times this election season? How many times since 1972?

Didn't Lieberman use nefarious tactics against Ted Lamont that his web site was deliberately crashed. Months later, after the elections, Lieberman was found to be a liar. Just saying...
Posted by: Mango | April 20, 2008 3:51 PM
What is so newsworthy about that. According to the so called newspapers who really did publish something about the way Hillary has been flamed. Her offices have been burglarized several times......but then of course with the same thing happens to obama it is terrible. Maybe if they would post some of the crap he has done this country would know he is not the good guy, they would know he is the bad guy...with crooks like the Iraqi crook Auchi and the Chicago gangster funding him.

The campaign office is two blocks from my house, and I find out about this in a Baltimore paper. From Digg. Hurray.

@Kathy: Any who knows about computers will tell you that once someone with any computer knowledge has physical access to it, passwords are fairly meaningless.

IF it's the Clintons you follow the bodies.
Most likely it's Osama looking for more sympathy. And when are you lefties going to get over losing in 2000-2004 and most likely 2008 and beyond?

Take hard drive out put in my computer.
Claim ownership of all folders and files.
Read them.
With any decent strategy and expectation that this could happen those computers have very little useful information on them.

I remember when John Kerry visited San Francisco during his campaign. After he spoke at the Commonwealth Club, while he and his campaign spokesman Chris Lehane ate lunch at a restaurant, a stolen Honda pulled up next to Lehane's vehicle outside. While the Honda driver waited, a Caucasian male in his 30's smashed Lehane's vehicle window, took Lehane's laptop with Kerry donor records and campaign plan, but did not take other significant valuables in the car. The laptop's modem, next to it, was not taken. Google: 'Chuck squatriglia Kerry campaign data' to see the San Francisco Chronicle, Friday, March 14, 2003. article.
Also, ABC News on Oct. 28, 2004 documented a significant number of break-ins to Democratic campaign sites, some Kerry's, in various states. In selective thefts, the laptop of a lawyer retained to investigate voter fraud was stolen too.
I'm sure Karl Rove of course has plausible deniability in any of this. Richard Nixon was a novice compared to what's going on these days. It's gang war, plain and simple.

Hey geniuses, no one from the Obama camp is blaming Hillary. So far it's just bloggers speculating. Sure, Hillary's got motive, but it's just as likely a couple thieves spotted an opportunity to make a quick buck. Don't go pointing fingers until there's some real evidence.

I was volunteering in Allentown last weekend, operating out of this very office. I grew up just outside of Allentown. The office itself is located in a relatively rough portion of town. Their space is a large open, converted warehouse type building, big pane glass windows, high ceilings, etc. All their equipment (probably 5-6 computers, including laptops, along with some printers, and other assorted electronics when I was there) were completely visible from outside the building. Considering the neighborhood, and the visibility of their equipment, it's no surprise the office was burglarized. Allentown, unfortunately, is a hurting city. It's a real shame, because the Allentown volunteers were doing a really wonderful job, and the robbery will almost certainly hurt their GOTV efforts.
Hillary's headquarters were down the street, also on Linden. From what I could tell, the innards of the Clinton office wasn't nearly as visible from the sidewalk.

I hope they were personal laptops and not campaign one.
Wake up people the right wing will do anything. I do mean anything.

HA. Folks, this was in no way politically motivated. That's just Allentown saying hello to Obama.

Laptops are used because they are portable...at the end of the day TAKE EM HOME and leave dummy ones with false info in the offices.

Obama is ahead of Mccain. John must be very clear about the main issues. The main issue is the economy. You cannot pick up one population of people and slam it down on top of another without economical impact. Put up the fence and fine employers who hire illegal people. Secure the borders. If Mccain comes out on this side of this issue he will be the next president. If not he won't.
