The Swamp

Republicans have taken to calling the 50 percent increase in gasoline prices since Democrats took over last year the "Pelosi Premium." Democrats say Republicans are looking at the wrong time frame.

"When President Bush took office, gas prices were less than half of what they are today - and oil was less than one-third," Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey says in today's Democratic radio address. "Then, seven years ago, President Bush and Vice President Cheney secretly invited executives from the big oil and big energy companies to the White House to write our national energy policy. ...

"Now, they are hauling in record profits," Lautenberg says. "We are paying record prices. And their profits are coming out of our pockets."

Republicans have been hounding Pelosi to explain the "commonsense plan" to hold down gas prices that Democrats promised two years ago.

"Two years later, they appear to have no plan other than to increase taxes on energy companies and stand in the way of increased domestic production," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said. "So what we want to know is, where is the 'commonsense plan' to lower gas prices? And what is taking them so long to unveil it? The American people are waiting--and paying more at the pump each day they wait."

In fact, Pelosi has spent a good part of the last week calling on Republicans to help pass legislation to crack down on price gouging, hold OPEC accountable for price fixing and end tax breaks for oil companies and invest the savings in renewable energy.

On Thursday, Pelosi urged Bush to halt deliveries to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. On Friday, Democrats called on the Federal Trade Commission to use the authority recently granted by Congress to investigate prices for possible market manipulation.

The larger problem is that for a price surge linked to market speculation, unrest in the Middle East, the week U.S. dollar and growing demand from China and India, there are no easy solutions. Lautenberg's address follows.

"Good morning, I'm Frank Lautenberg, United States Senator from New Jersey. This week, the price of oil and gasoline both hit new record highs - almost $120 for a barrel of oil and more than $3.50 a gallon for gas.

"These out-of-control prices mean that hundreds of thousands of Americans are driving to work and spending too much of their day just earning back the cost of their commute. The American people deserve to know why this happened.

"When President Bush took office, gas prices were less than half of what they are today - and oil was less than one-third. Then, seven years ago, President Bush and Vice President Cheney secretly invited executives from the big oil and big energy companies to the White House to write our national energy policy. When we finally uncovered the truth, we discovered - to no surprise - that Big Oil helped write a law that guaranteed them billions and billions of dollars in tax giveaways while they set in motion disastrous economic and environmental policies that have served no one but themselves.

"Now, they are hauling in record profits. We are paying record prices. And their profits are coming out of our pockets.

"It's long past time to change our national priorities. We know there's little hope that President Bush will suddenly wake up and see the light. But unfortunately, his Republican allies in Congress continue to stand by his side, with the oil and energy companies - for the status quo and against the American people.

"Democrats are fighting hard for change, and we have made real progress. We passed a new energy bill that begins to turn the tide by improving gas mileage for cars and trucks, investing in clean, renewable fuels and other smart energy steps, such as improving the energy efficiency of our buildings.

"But we also face the problem of market speculation - and manipulation. We need to rein in traders who keep bidding oil prices higher and higher, leaving the American people to foot the bill.

"On top of these short-term solutions, we also need to face the long-term problem of oil consumption. Our country burns 21 million gallons of oil every day. Two-thirds of that oil is imported from unstable regions of the world, run by governments who are not our friends.

"The long-term solution to our energy crisis lies in alternative fuels and efficiency. If we aggressively promote innovation in solar, wind, biofuels and geothermal power, we can help lower energy prices, turn the tide on global warming and strengthen our national security. And while we're doing all that, we will be creating hundreds of thousands of good new jobs right here in America.

"Republicans won't break with the status quo easily. The grip of Big Oil and energy companies is strong. That's why we need you to help us keep the pressure on President Bush and the Republicans who are intent on rewarding their oil friends while they stick the American people with the bill. The stakes are too high for that kind of cronyism and cynical politics. Democrats reject them. And together, I know we can solve this crisis.

"I am Senator Frank Lautenberg from New Jersey. Thank you, and have a great weekend."

McConnell is an idiot. The Repubs are so busy blocking ANYTHING from getting to the floor that he can hardly cry about the Dems not doing something about gas prices. They'll even block a bill they agreed on weeks before regarding...not making this up...fair elections.

Meanwhile, the American people are the Cheney Chumps at the pumps.

Thank God, for Speaker Pelosi and the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives, otherwise there would be no check on President Bush and the Republicans. Now, we can finally start to investigate the possible collusion between this administration and the Oil Companies. Keep on doing the good job, you have been doing, Speaker Pelosi. We, Democrats, and I am sure, the rest of America, are proud of the job you have been doing in The House of Representatives. Keep up the good work!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

If domestic production is really such a problem, why are oil companies exporting oil from the US, driving down reserves even though demand here has gone down? Why is Bush pumping more gas into the US strategic reserves, even though they are at 97% capacity, taking away from US consumers?

Those two key issues are driving-up the price of gas by lowering available gas to consumers.

Just proof that the oil companies investment in Bush's presidency vs, say, increasing domestic refineries, was their strategy to increase their greedy profits.

Bush and his fellow Wingnuts have spent the last seven years destroying our economy with an uncalled for pre-emptive war, tax cuts for the rich and deficit spending to the tune of $10 Trillion in debt.

They Wingers can spin it however they want because no one listens to the lying weenies in the Republic Party anymore anyway.
