Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter announced last evening that he had been diagnosed with a recurrance of Hodgkin's Disease, a cancer of the lymph system that the senator successfully warded off three years ago.
Specter, 78, was first diagnosed with Hodgkin's in 2005 and received chemotherapy treatments for six months that sent the cancer into remission. The return of the cancer was found during a follow up PET scan, but his office said that cancer was in less severe stage than it was the first time it was detected. He will begin 12 weeks of chemotherapy.
“I was surprised by the PET scan findings because I have been feeling so good. I consider this just another bump on the road to a successful recovery from Hodgkin’s, from which I’ve been symptom free for 3 years,” Specter said in a statement.
Specter is in his sixth term in the Senate and the Republican has already said he plans to run for another term. He is the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
