The political reporter Thomas Edsall points out an interesting nugget in his column that the Clinton campaign seemed to gloss over when they released eight years of tax returns yesterday.
Bill Clinton received about $15 million in payments from billionaire Ron Burkle since 2002.
The Los Angeles-based mogul has long been tied to the Clintons and has been one of the most prolific fundraisers for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.
In a press statement accompanying the release of Clintons's tax return, the campaign summarized where much of the couples money came from over the last eight years—a Senate salary, presidential pension, book royalties and a whopping sum of $51.9 million in speaking fees earned by President Clinton.
But glaringly missing from the summary was mention of $15 million in fees paid by Burkle's Yucaipa Global Opportunities Fund since 2002. Forbes magazine listed Burkle as the 91st richest American last year.
The Clintons ties to Burkle have drawn scrutiny for some time. Last fall, the Wall Street Journal reported one of the former president's aides had helped arrange a partnership between Burkle and young Italian businessman named Raffaello Follieri.
That partnership later fell apart and Burkle sued Follieri of misusing funds to keep up a lavish lifestyle of fancy meals and rides on jets for him and his girlfriend, actress Anne Hathaway.
In his column for the Huffington Post, Edsall asks two important questions. Why did the campaign fail to mention that the former president received a good chunk of the family's income from the tycoon? And what exactly did the former president do to earn that kind of money?

Now that there is NOTHING to attck Clinton on her TAX details, there goes the press after the NONSENSE things.

The Huffington Post, along with other "Left Wing" groups like Move-on, are apparently in the "Envy/Jealous" Factor along with the "Hate Hillary" Factor that is so dominant on the Internet Blogs. I have watched Cable News/Talk shows since the Clintons tax release yesterday, and have gotten a few good laughs at how hard The Media is trying in a not so subtle way of infering something that is not there, suddenly by some miracle, will appear. A question asked many years ago comes to mind-" Have you no shame?" I think the question should be asked again of The Media.

More Clinton sleaze.

I guess we will find out once the indictments are unsealed in 2010.
The Clinton's are excellent razzle-dazzle con artsts.
Nothing but sleaze.
My sympathies to all the incipient fools who continue to blindly support them.

The Hill-hater club will never stop in their attempt to elevate the nomination of Barack Obama. Where is the Baltimore Sun on its investigations into Obama's dealings with indicted Tony Rezko?
What investigation? Exactly! This pathetic attempt at innuendo and smear is so obvious. Get real, Baltimore Sun, your bias is showing.

John,
Didn't you used to work in the oil industry? Does that make you sleazy earning your living from the "major cause of global warming"?

LONG LIVE THE ROYAL FAMILIES! KEEP THE BUSH CLINTON STRING GOING! LOOK WHERE WE ARE? ISN'T IT GREAT? MORE BUSH CLINTONS FOREVER!!!!

It's not the smartness people hate, it's the way Clintons come accross as wanting to outsmart everyone else and screwing up in the process. In this instance the question is what could the former president do as a private citizen to earn 15 million dollars from an individual. We know he is a good lawyer. He can parse the word "is." We know he is good speaker. We know he is a good power broker. So, what exactly did he do for this individual that was worth 15 million dollars? The query does not indicate antipathy.

I sure he earned every pennie or will soon.

As an experiment I entered an adjusted gross income of $15.8 million (the Clintons' combined income in 2006) into TurboTax. When the software checked my return, it said that it was at above average risk for getting audited.
So I think the Clintons are very lucky if they haven't been audited, as this is no fun. In fact when I got audited the examiner did not laugh at any of my blonde jokes. I urge Ms. Clinton to be very careful, and not to try deducting custom drapery as energy conservation. Trust me, it doesn't work.

That may raise new questions about what services he performed for Los Angeles-based Yucaipa, whose investors include the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid al- Maktoum.
Tax lawyers said the Yucaipa partnership income for Bill Clinton looks to be a form of salary because it was in round numbers for most years.
``Most people who make that much money work for it,'' said Yale University tax law professor Michael Graetz, a former Treasury Department official in President George H.W. Bush's administration. ``What are they being paid for, and if it's the Sheikh of Dubai paying the husband of somebody who might be the next president of the United States, what do they think they're paying for?''

Don't forget Obama bought his house at half of market value in a real estate deal with the indicted Tony Rezko.

Sure am glad the Clintons have been vetted.

Good to know nothing more could possibly come out about the Clintons (they've been vetted, doncha know); I'm sure Bill's been behaving himself lately...

It just doesn't pass the smell test, does it? Bubba picks up 15 mil for doing "consulting" work for a billionaire. Kind of reminds you of Hillary's cattle futures thing. She took $1,000 and pretty much overnight turned it into $100,000 on the commodities exchange, then gave some non-sensical lie about how that happpened. Yeah, right. So what exactly is Bubba doing for the 15 mil? Or maybe the question should be, what has he promised to do in the future for that kind of money? Is the money simply a down-payment? Is there more money hidden in offshore accounts? How about the 200-million plus given to his library? He refuses to reveal the donor list. Will any large newspaper look into these questions? Not a chance. But it all hinges on whether Bill Clinton gets back into the White House. If he doesn't make a third term, then it's pretty much a moot point. So that is why they will say anything and do anything to get back in. Remember, it was Lyndon Johnson who would say anything or do anything to gain the Oval Office. And he did just that.

Don't forget Obama bought his house at half of market value in a real estate deal with the indicted Tony Rezko. Currently on trial in Illinois for crimes involving influence peddling in the Illinois state government.

The Clinton are liars:
Yesterday's Wall Street Journal reported that Clinton consultant Mark Penn is shilling for a free trade agreement with Colombia that Hillary says she opposes.
As can be seen from the Clintons' tax returns, those friendly people in Dubai give millions to Bill Clinton while Hillary claims she opposes Dubai ownership of American seaports on national security grounds.
Marc Rich, the fugitive international financier and union buster, was pardoned by Bill Clinton, who enjoyed a social relationship with Rich's wealthy wife.
Hillary's brothers, Tony and Hugh Rodham, also profited from dubious presidential pardons offered by the would-be First Filanderer.
Tony Rodham helped gain a presidential pardon for a Tennessee couple convicted of bank fraud.
Hugh Rodham pocketed $400,000 in legal fees after two of his clients were granted last-minute pardons. One, Carlos Vignali Jr., was convicted for transporting 800 pounds of cocaine; and his pardon was granted against the wishes of the Justice Department.
The list goes on and on ...
One of the best compilations was done by the very reputable Stuart Taylor of the National Journal, who asked:
"Hillary Rodham Clinton is supposed to be smart. But how smart is it for a woman with such a bad reputation for truthfulness and veracity to put those character traits at the center of the campaign?)" ...
Christopher Hitchens, the ubiquitous conscience of the Fourth Estate, is right.
Hillary's "offenses to veracity and decency rival," he said, "if not indeed surpassed, the disbarred and perjured hack who is her husband and tutor."
Parents, can anyone in their right mind think this pair of co-dependent "grifters"--the word Jimmy Carter's chief of staff, Hamilton Jordan, used to define them--is a good role model for today's children?
Personal responsibility is the key to government accountability.
Just today, Hillary is blaming "the boys" for her tanking campaign ...
Forget the pharonic and wasteful spending by her campaign, the vicious infighting among her key advisors, race-gate, the made-for-Hollywood portrayal of Full-Metal-Jacket St. Hillary of Bosnia, etc., etc., etc.
When Hillary is losing, it is always because she is the victim of dark and sinister forces.
Except that these are an ever changing cast of characters (witness her making nice-nice last week with the man who in the 1990s she claimed headed the "vast rightwing conspiracy"--Pennsylvania mogul Mellon Scaife).
If you begin to add up the list of all those Hillary has blamed at one point or another for her being unable to realize her agenda or her ambitions you come up with at least the beginnings of an interesting profile ...
It is of the American people themselves.

No wonder Hillary was pushing so hard to fundraise the last few days.
Hearing she earned $109 million and she wants people to scrape by and give her money, so she can pay Mark Penn his millions, and he can fly off to Colombia and push for Free Trade, to take away jobs from Americans?

Clinton has crashed and burned her own campaign, she has no one else to blame but herself....and Mark Penn.
For the past month, Hillary Clinton has repeatedly attacked Barack Obama because one of his economic advisers met with Canadian officials in Chicago to discuss NAFTA.
Now the Wall Street Journal reports that her own chief campaign strategist did the very same thing on a new free-trade agreement with Colombia.
"Hillary Clinton's chief campaign strategist met with Colombia's ambassador to the U.S. on Monday to discuss a bilateral free-trade agreement, a pact the presidential candidate opposes." (less)

Tim you bozo pansy. They have been vetted. Every 'scandal' anybody tries to point up about them NEVER goes anywhere and ALWAYS makes them more popular. Not so with the Obamas, baby.
WHERE'S THE 30 YEARS OF TAX RETURNS FOR YOUNG MICHELLE ROBINSON AND BARACK OBAMA?

"Accuse your oponent of doing what you are doing so you will know what you are doing." This is something I learned many years ago, and wanted to pass it along to the not very well informed about politics. Think about this for a couple of minutes and you will understand.
Posted by: lylepink | April 5, 2008 5:17 PM
geraldinetoo: Name calling is not the way to go. Whatever question you may have about any of the candidates should be posed as a question and not accusatory. Then, maybe some of us may have an answer based on the best information available.
Posted by: lylepink | April 5, 2008 5:25 PM
lylepink I don't have questions anymore about the Obamas.
They're spoilers.
And the stench might just cost us the White House this time.
And they're vicious. They intimidate the bosses of people they feel threaten their rule of the country.
What information we can get takes a lot of work to find right now, as the corporate media WANTS the Obamas on the ticket for the fall fiasco.
Wake up and smell the disaster before it's too late.

The demoCrap Parté
is even more corrupt that the republiCrap parté.
If we citizens don't begin elevating our own power over all the Corrupt politicians and the two Partés our children are doomed subjects of a 3rd World Nation.
The G'Damn government bureaucrats and elected thieves are above our Laws, while you and I are indicted, arrested and convicted with relative ease.

This kind of money-making has nothing to do with intelligence or talent or hard work. It has to do with corrupt, old-fashioned cronyism: if you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. Individuals and corporations pay the Clintons hundreds of thousands of dollars because they expect to get something in return. The question is what. More sleep-overs in the White House? More ambassadorships? More pardons?
