Hillary Clinton's campaign, while acknowledging today that she has loaned her campaign an additional $6.4 million in recent weeks, insisted that despite worse-than-expected performances in North Carolina and Indiana she is plunging ahead and entertaining no thoughts of finding an exit from the race.
"I think the reality is that many pundits have counted Senator Clinton out many times during this contest," Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communication director, said in a morning conference call with reporters. "As you suggest, some of them are doing it again today. Thankfully for us, the punditocracy does not control this progress. Voters do."
Clinton staffers worked hard to present Tuesday's results--Clinton eked out a two-point win in Indiana while losing North Carolina to Sen. Barack Obama by 14 points--in the most positive light. In Indiana, noted Clinton chief strategist Geoff Garin, Obama significantly outspent her, yet she came from behind to defeat him in a state that borders his own.
As for North Carolina, Garin noted that Clinton won the white vote by 24 points.
"Senator Clinton continues to run very strongly among people who are likely to be the swing voters in the November election--among moderate-income voters, blue collar voters, non-college educated voters, seniors, Catholics--and we think the results last night strengthen the case that she will be the strongest candidate for the Democratic Party in November," Garin said.
Yet Tuesday's vote was the last major opportunity for Clinton to significantly close Obama's lead in elected delegates, but Obama gained ground instead. That has led to speculation among many analysts that Clinton would begin looking for a graceful way to bow out. The campaign's statements appeared designed to quash that talk and signal that she intends to roar ahead.
But the campaign admitted that, with its fundraising lagging significantly behind Obama's, Clinton had dipped into her personal wealth as recently as Monday, the day before the North Carolina and Indiana primaries. She loaned the campaign $5 million on April 11, $1 million on May 1 and another $425,000 on May 5.
Together with an earlier loan, that makes a total of $11.4 million Clinton has lent her campaign, and her staffers suggested she would be willing to lend more if necessary. They said the loans reflected determination, not weakness.
"The loans are a sign of Senator Clinton's commitment to the race, commitment to the process and commitment to being competitive with Senator Obama on TV and in other areas," Wolfson said.
Even so, many political observers believe Clinton's chances of winning the nomination are increasingly unlikely. Garin outlined three things the campaign needs to do: win the remaining primaries, including next Tuesday's vote in West Virginia; fight to seat Democratic delegates from the Florida and Michigan, which were stripped of their delegates for scheduling their primaries too early; and persuade super-delegates that Clinton would be the stronger candidate against Republican John McCain in the fall.
The message was clear: Despite Tuesday's results, despite the talk of the prohibitive math facing Clinton, despite the growing number of super-delegates committed to Obama, Clinton isn't going anywhere.
"We are not going to concede any vote. We are going to reach out to every community," Wolfson said. "If Senator Clinton is the nominee, as we believe she will be, she will work very hard to reach out to Senator Obama's supporters."

A Clinton, very simply, doesn't quit. I think that she's now got to bank on winning both Kentucky and West Virginia on Tuesday (with a stronger Indiana showing she could've split) to make up for the NC romp.
As a McCain fan I'd like to see her gone as soon as possible so that all those crossover votes go into the McCain camp as soon as possible in the polling. That and I want to see BHO try to look even marginally patriotic and ready to lead when compared to John Sidney McCain.

I sure get tired of Clinton's camp whining about how Obama is outspending her. Problem is, he is running against two Clintons, not one. Twice as many lies, twice as many panders, twice as many negative untruths that he has to un-do, --that's double the money, justified.
Posted by: tony | May 7, 2008 11:29 AM
George McGovern, inexpliably a Clinton supporter, just announced he is switching to Obama and publicly asked her to quit.
I think this a very significant development.
Millions are just sick of hearing this sick puppy's voice.
And we are especially tired of her despicable tactics, the worst in memory.

Jeff, I'd like to see you act even marginally patriotic and stop questioning the love of country of a man who had done more for this nation than you have ever dreamed of.
How much of your life have YOU devoted to public service Jeff? Have you ever run for office to try and help lead this nation? Have you worked on issues of education and poeverty? We all know you think you're much too important and elite to join the military.
How do you show you love your country Jeff? What sacrifice have you made? What gives you the right to question anyone's love of country?
Bring it on in the general. The nation as moved beyond the Republican sleaze ball McCarthy tactics that you embody. They know that the more a Republican shouts about patriotism, the more they are covering for acting against the good of the nation.

When you run ads that insult people's intelligence (e.g. "What's wrong with Barack Obama?"), you undercut all the good qualities that voters have come to associate with your candidate. Why the Clinton campaign continues to use Republican-style TV spots instead of the more thoughtful presentations we saw before Feb. 5th is baffling. There are serious problems with both her advertising and communications/p.r. that need addressing here.
Why, for instance, did Howard Wolfson stand idly by (twice) as Rep. Clyburn played the race card unchallenged, allowing Obama to clean up the black vote in North and South Carolina? He could have used surrogates, press conference calls, fact sheets and paid TV spots to contrast race as it pertained to Sen. Obama's record in Chicago. But nothing...
Then there's the Rezko connections. Why isn't Wolfson doing a full-court press aboutt Obama's links with various Iraqi exiles, especially the former Minister of Electricity, who stole $650 million in reconstruction funds and is hiding out in Illinois? Compared to these characters, Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers seem as controversial as the Smothers Brothers.
Add to that Team Clinton's failure to file F.C.C. complaints to combat the relentless media bias. That paper trail should have started Jan. 30th, the day after the Florida primary, when those networks and the Associated Press blacked out Clinton's big win. With no deterrent, it's not surprising that we now hear journalists openly calling her a "panderer". So much for the AP style book. (After all, there is a gas tax holiday bill proposed in Congress. Not her fault the Judiciary Committee won't act on it.) The character assassination and crass TV spots were like a one-two punch to do her in last night.
It's unprecedented in modern history that a presidential candidate has had to battle not only her opponent, but her own party, the left AND the right, and the incompetence of her own senior staff. She may still be standing, but it becomes more and more painful to watch. Hopefully some of her friends will intervene and prod her to change direction. (For more on the manipulation of the primaries, click on my screen name.)

Why do you think there were so many crossover votes in the states that have open primaries? I think it is obvious that the Republicans really want to run against Obama, the most liberal Senator in the Congress. They would have a much more difficult time beating Hillary.

Barack Obama is going to have a hard time carrying the right wing of the Democratic Party,
what's left of it,
unless he put's Hillary and Bill on the ticket.
If he doesn't put Hill and Bill on the ticket. We're all going to walk, and there's nothing I, or anyone can do about it.
And John will run the ball right up the middle...
He has to be reading the same polls I do,
so he must see the same dynamic I see,
potentially happening in the future.
The right wing of the party is not going to vote for the defeatists wing of the party made up of Nancy and Harry.
It just won't happen
so step carefully
before you pull the trigger on any VP candidates.
or Hillary could keep on cutting
and take B down for the 2012 election, which is not as crazy as it sounds...
the more I think about it.

Hillary can afford to keep 'lending' her campaign money...after all, we taxpayers are giving the Clintons millions every year in ex-President perks. They have nothing to worry about.

Obama’s win in NC proves beyond any doubt that he is a racially-based candidate. He can’t win the general election with just the blacks and the young. It would be another ‘Tsongas’ election! Clinton’s win in Indiana, by a slim margin, also raises the big question why Obama lost a state that he is supposed to win! Her win is indeed a tie breaker!
The media continues to be anti-Clinton. Her win should be presented in the proper context of the quality of each of these candidates’s electability!
Posted by: vote4thebest | May 7, 2008 1:25 PM
Let's cut to the chase. Does any half-way educated person seriously believe that all of these deluded lower middle-class and blue collar types who think Hillary is the new Messiah are actually going to vote Republican in November? Voting for the ideology that took away their overpaid union jobs and all the goodies that went with it. Voting for the party that is sending their sons and daughter to get their butts shot off while not even providing them with the necessary equipment? VERY unlikely. And, if they do, they deserve every unfortunate thing that is done to them by the Big Business and country club types.

I think when Hillary loses she should start a 3rd party candidacy for president. Most of us who were staunch democrats are upset that our aoprty has been taken over by the moveon.org wing and that seems to be what Obama represents. Why not Hillary run on her own. She has just as much if not more of a following than both Obama and McCain. Obama can have the hard core liberals and Hillary will run for the blue colloar working man.

My thought is that Hillary is still around because the more she can drag out the devision in the Democratic Party, the more likely they will lose 2008. This would ensure she would have another chance at a run in 2012. If Obama wins the general election in 2008 she will have to wait until 2016 to re run.

The Democratic Party has been taken over the hard left extremists. America will no more support the hard left than it will the far right. And Obama is as far out in the left field as you can go. He demonstrated his Marxist blindness perfectly when he tried to defend his proposed increase on capital gains taxes during the ABC debates. Obama's belief in punitive marginal tax rates is a tenet of good Marxists in the US. Charles Gibson pointed out that revenues increase with lower rates, but Obama clung to his playbook, unable to deal with facts contrary to his learned responses. At least we know Obama actually drinks the Kool Aid he mixes up for the nanny state minions.

Obama is spending more money than Clinton because VOTERS ARE GIVING HIM MORE MONEY THAN THEY ARE GIVING CLINTON! If HRC was getting more contributions than Obama she would be spending it also. More money, more votes, more delegates. Yeah, (with sarcasm) watch out for Hillary! She's gonna take the fight all the way to the convention, where the same thing will happen as if she conceded now.

I believe the supers need to watch the polls for Obama vs McCain and Hillary vs McCain. This will be very telling in the end when the Dems will need to beat McCain. At this point in time Hillary is polled to beat McCain by larger margins that Obama. They also need to watch what the polls show about Clinton's backers voting Repub if she looses. Because again the margin is higher in crossover voters if Hillary doesn't get the nomination than it shows if Obama doesn't get the nomination. The only ones that may cross over if Obama doesn't win are the blacks and the young. I believe it is 1/3 crossover for Hillary and only less than 1/4 if Obama doesn't get the nomination. Why don't we all try to be adults for the rest of this campaign and stop name calling and stick to the problems that face this country. Name calling and off color remarks are not going to help any win this election.

Obama is one "typical" politician, he isn't clear and honest, and it's more difficult for republican and independents votes forget friendship with Rev. Wright, "patriotism", "bitter", pins, wife comment , etc, etc
Obama won one black state, North Caroline, and it's normal this support of the black people for Obama.
Obama had to win in Indiana and has not done so.
Hillary won Indiana, this is mathematic....and the possibility isn't finishes for Hillary.
Go Hillary !!!

I don't see what the gigantic issue is here. The state primaries are serving their purpose, it's not illegal for two people to still be running up till the convention. People are just freaking out because they're not used to it. Chill out.

To John, Whos comments are below. The Dems are the worst kind of lying idiots. They are already lying about McCain. The ads are completely false. Obama will get creamed after he gets the nomination. Dems should have picked Clinton. At least she has a chance. After people find out about Obamas muslim upbringing and the ties to Rezko, he will lost the luster that the liberal media has given him. Once he gets the nomination, the Wright story will follow him until the end. Obama is a racist. He is a liar. And we will not allow him to win the election. God Bless America. Oh that's right, Obama does not believe in the U.S. He won't even wear a flag pin. His wife isn't proud of anything but him running for Pres. She is another 20 Church member brainwashed to believe that White people are out to kill all blacks. This is going to be a great election. The truth about Barak Hussin Obama will come out. And All of America will be shocked.

Hillary Clinton is the most qualified and dependable for the job of President of the United States. She is the winner among voters who vote on character, compassion and ability, but not the choice of those who vote based on race. Obama has done well among black voters and those whose emotions rule their minds, inspiration instead of substance. I've never voted Republican, but if Clinton is not the nominee, I really have no choice but to do so for the safety and security of this nation.

Hey Linda, if you were to take a logic class, you'd discover that with this statement, you have just stated that either I am black, or my mind is ruled by my emotions and I vote based on inspiration instead of substance.
Well, it's obvious to anyone who sees me, with my Scottish-Irish-German background, that I am pretty darn pale. (And a female.)
I assure you that my mind is fully able to control my emotions as they pertain to this election (that's why this posting is not as obnoxious as I could make it).
And why can't a candidate both have substance and be inspirational? I don't understand why you feel these two qualities are mutually exclusive.
Please explain, if you dare.

Furthermore, why would you think that Barack is NOT patriotic? Anyone who is willing to take charge of this mess is a true patriot to me!

OK. It's clear now that Clinton can't win, and there are whispers from Washington insiders that the Clintons will politely withdraw soon. It's time we all backed one Democratic candidate and put this party squabbling behind us. Two (maybe 3) of the Supreme Court justices are in their 70's, and it is very likely that the next President will be responsible for appointing new justices....I, for one, do not look forward to McCain making those decisions and tilting the Court even more to the right.

HIllary would be the continuation of the same two warring families controlling the White House for the past twenty years. No thank you.
The fact that Hillary refuses to give up -- even once she cannot win -- shows what kind of President she would be: petty, vindictive, blind, dogmatic, and obstreperous. The sort of person who thinks she can shout someone down rather than hearing them out and reconsidering her opinions.
The sense of entitlement and the accompanying smugness are what killed her candidacy. She treated the voters like colonial subjects who owed her tribute. Get "The H" out!

Wow, Hilly's Campaign workers are REALLY piling it on thick now. Hey folks I got two words for ya, "BURNT TOAST!" Yep that's right, because that's what Hilly is now. I can see you Hating Obama and accusing him of being a racist (because after all...you're racists), but what I can't understand is why you'd mindlessly and irrationally continue to back a woman who's a known felon, perjurer, and traitor.
I don't know all that much of Barack Obama that's true but I haven't heard ANYONE accuse him of ever KNOWINGLY participating in the commission of a capitol crime (such as Real Estate Fraud, Money Laundering, Influence peddling, insider trading, Campaign Fraud, Espionage through sale of state secrets/sensitive technology to a foreign hostile government, witness tampering, or lying to a Federal Grand Jury)
Hilly has committed ALL of these offenses and worse (over 40 people lost their lives under "questionable" circumstances) during the Clinton's years as Governor and first lady of Arkansas and their 8 years in the White house..
You spout your hatred of Barack Obama when all he has actually done is make an iffy deal on his house because the character who lined up the deal turned out to be slippery when wet. Well gee I wonder where he got the idea that it was OK to do business with the guy? Maybe from Blago who was buddied up cozy, or maybe form Hilly and Willy themselves (That WAS them in the picture wasn't it?).
And you hate him because his minister went off the reservation to grab for his 15 minutes? I got a hundred bucks says the Clinton campaign paid the guy off to keep it going as long as possible (that's how they roll). Well that's fine, because like I said before "Let he who has NEVER uttered the "N" word cast the first stone.
It's OVER! Plain and simple. Don't come on here hatin' because your golden girl LOST! She lost for a reason, a very SOUND reason (See the above if you REALLY need to review). Barack Obama may be an unknown quantity, but I've LISTENED to what he has to say. And I'm willing to gamble on his moral fiber rather than Hilly's (she HAS none)
I've also LISTENED to Hilly's incessant drivel (and it might have made a little sense if she weren't constantly changing her positions to suit the demographic she was talking to, and getting caught in lie after lie after lie). By the way do the math. If you actually get 18 cents off every gallon of gas and like me you use two 14 gallon tanks a week, then over the course of the summer (13 weeks) you'll save $32.76 GREAT....BIG...HAIRY...DEAL!
And finally, if you're NOT gonna shut up and stop the hatin', then get off of here and take it somewhere else. Because the actual VOTERS on here don't really care to hear it.

Consider that Omaba won his Senate seat in 2004 because his formidable, wealthy Republican opponent who had won a hotly contested primary had a secret kinky side that was revealed only when a Chicago newspaper sued to have his divorce file unsealed shortly before the general election. Doomed Republican candidate dropped out within hours of publication of reason why he tried so hard to keep it sealed. Republican party scrambled to find someone else at the last minute, even tried to get Mike Ditka to run. Ditka toyed with the idea before declining the invitation. Does anyone remember who ultimately ran on the Republican ticket in place of the shamed Republican primary winner? Yes, the great Obama beat no other than Alan Keyes who stepped in at the last minute to fill the void in the Republican ticket. Even the Republicans were aghast. Original Republican candidate would have beaten Obama everywhere except Cook County. All the wealthy Republican collar counties and downstate counties would have gone for him over Obama. Even Ditka might well have beaten Obama.
Now, less than four years later, the great Obama is the one who will save this country as our next president. I don't buy it. But for original Republican candidate's perversions and/or Chicago newpaper's determined legal battle to unseal court record, Obama would still be an obscure state senator, an academic, a run-of-the-mill lawyer or any and all of the above.
Given that original Republican candidate's fate unfolded as it did, had Jeremiah Wright's rantings become known to voters in Illinois before Nov, 2004 election, their choice would have been between a certified fringe lunatic Rebuplican candidate and a Democratic candidate whose pastor was a kindred spirit of his opponent.
Somebody please tell me what it is Obama has accomplished that makes all these folks think that he is qualified to be president of the US. True, he's a better speaker than George Bush. Maybe smarter too. Best I can tell, his biggest asset is that lady luck likes him. I'll never understand how that somehow translates into trustworthy" or how that creates within him a "moral compass". I just don't get it but I think Ferraro was right. Were he not an African American, he would not be where he is. There's that luck again.

I've never voted for a Democrat for President. And I voted *against* Reagan his first time at bat. I'm actually a registered Republican - mostly to piss of my wife- but of course vote generally democrat lacking any alternative otherwise. I pass by Obama's house (and rezko's garden plot) on my way home from work almost every day - on the CTA bus (sometimes I catch a different bus). And I guess I'm one of those 'rich' that everyone hates as I'm not getting any of the 'tax rebate' thingy. When I'm not riding the CTA I drive my 10-year old Ford Taurus to Indiana to fill up with gas, and to shop for because of the lower taxes (as much as 60 cents a gallon of gas which more than pays for the cost of the trip). So. For all you Clintonistas out there that think St. Hillary is the only one who has a chance to win and threaten to vote for McCain unless she is annointed- despite your own primary system indicating Obama the nominee, and you won't really - I mention the mere fact that if Obama is the Democratic nominee, I who have never ever voted for a Democratic Presidential Candidate in a general election would seriously consider voting for Obama over McCain for a lot of reasons. And I suspect I'm not alone. I suspect my wife- who is a hardcore Democrat from a Democrat Party family and I suspect has also never voted for the Democrat in a Presidential general election would also vote for Obama given the choice.

YOU GO-OO Girl. Hit the people Obama doesn't consider high priority such as HRC rights, Gays and lesbian couple... The Homeless or those on the verge of homelessness as well as Katrina realistic promises... I know what a great amount of consideration Obama hasn't considered. Also harvesting the lawn clippings and lumber scraps to combat the ethanol problem. we need more than ethanol. Butane is cheaper than propane and runs cleaner than gasoline. Improvement on gas mileage for mid size cars, hatch backs,
tax write offs for auto makers that produce the highest mileage on both duel fuels. Here in Florida they are in the 60's with utilizing waste into fuel, electric companies that use wind powered generators as well as improving costs for the poor to afford fuel so they don't loose their jobs, tax incentives for those that move in to other parts of the country...
I mam disabled and get$69.00 in food stamps and want to know if there are programs that reimburse for the medicines Medicaid doesn't pay for... I want so badly to be self sufficient. The problems are I need things to sustain my life the Ryan White funding has been flat funded and some people who have AIDS are living ON THE STREETS.
I wish people would contact me as to strategies and fund raising education so you WILL WIN!
You are my only hope...
You also need to change the rules so that a Republican can't come in and force an early election, which has happened. They will do anything Legal or not they are Do as I say not as I do people whom are easily fooled.
Pass a law to all policitions that they have to limit what the percentage wealthy right wingers can do so the majority of the people NEVER loose their right to have their vote counted instead of super delegates whom don't care about anything but keeping their rich constituants pleased and starving, as well as leaving low income housing and votes on agendas can NOT be used for other than the vote was cast for. They lie to us in Florida and take important improvement funding and using it for not what it was intewnded for... This should be considered FRAUD.

Someone above commented that "McBush has even said that for women to get the same pay doing the same job as a man, they just need to get a little more education and training." This is, in fact, the same view espoused by many Obama supporters I know. My former boss, for example, suggested to me in a performance review, "maybe you'll decide to have more children and stay home with them." Still, I'm not planning on voting for McBush if Clinton loses. I may just stay home with my kids.

Yes, every one knows being born black in the United States brings you all the privledges and advantages and makes you an instant elite. Poor Hillary, born as an oppressed white. How unlucky for her.
