The Swamp

by James Oliphant

It's a big day for Hillary Clinton--kind of.

She is expected to breeze through the Kentucky primary (Barack Obama already conceded--last week) and then watch Obama beat her in Oregon. Obama has a rally planned tonight in Iowa to make it look like he is the presumptive Democratic nominee but will stop short of actually saying so.

Then what?

Probably nothing. Tomorrow will be much like today.

Clinton isn't quitting, but there isn't all that much to move ahead to. None of the remaining three primaries in Puerto Rico, Montana, and South Dakota will alter the basic math. The best she can hope for tonight is that the Kentucky race is called early, leaving her with some significant cable news air time with which she can again make her case that she is the strongest candidate to lead the party into the fall.

Meanwhile, a theme is emerging in the last days of the primary race, one that suggests Clinton has been done in by a combination of sexism on the trail and in the media. In today's Washington Post Clinton gives an interview to the Post's Lois Romano in which she decries the "sexist" treatment she's received over the past few month.

"It's been deeply offensive to millions of women," Clinton told the Post.

She accused the press of having more tolerance for sexism than racism, saying "It does seem as thought the press at least is not as bothered by the incredible vitriol that has been engendered by the comments by people who are nothing but misogynists."

The examples the article cites include a man yelling "Iron my shirt" at a campaign event, lewd T-shirts, and repeated references to her "cleavage and her cackle."
