House Democrats are taking exception to President Bush's dismissal today of a housing bill expected to pass today in the House.
Bush, after meeting this morning with House Republicans, said he would veto the bill to insure new loans for cash-strapped homeowners. The White House has called it a "bailout;" Bush said today it would reward "speculators and lenders."
"American families confronting foreclosue deserve better from the president than a veto threat," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in response to Bush's remarks. "They deserve the House's bipartisan housing plan that will protect the American dream of home ownership."
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer was more pointed.
"As the second term of his failed presidency winds to an end, President Bush has little left on the agenda but finger-pointing. With gas prices skyrocketing and with Americans losing their homes to foreclosure at record rates, the president can do little but blame, criticize, and pass the buck. ... Americans saw today an Administration out of leadership, and a president out of ideas."
Bush said he was "committed to a good housing bill that will help folks stay in their house, as opposed to a housing bill that will reward speculators and lenders. There's a House alternative that will do the right thing for the American people when it comes to housing."
"I will veto the bill that's moving through the House today if it makes it to my desk, and I urge members on both sides of the aisle to focus on a good piece of legislation that is being sponsored by Republican members," Bush said.
Some Republicans were expected to support the Democratic bill, which was negotiated by Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke.

Bush, "I will veto the bill...bailout...it would reward speculators and lenders". What was Bear Sterns all about?

A failed presidency grinds to a halt. Achieving nothing but chaos and corruption. A morally bankrupt man leading a broken party, (GOP) and a damaged country. Mission accomplished. Enjoy Crawford!

I can't wait for the Obama/McCain debates this fall.
The Iraq War is tattooed on McCain's forehead and goes with him everywhere he goes. All he can do is clap louder and hope he can change enough people's opinion about Iraq. He must convince them that they're now wrong, that it wasn't a mistake to invade, that it's worth blowing all those trillions over there instead of spending it over here on things that could actually make a difference in voters lives today.
October elections in Iraq are going to turn out to be bad timing for McCain, too. It's likely to be a more violent summer in Iraq, not a less violent one. Republicans outsmarted themselves, again.
Also McCain has to convince everyone that Bush's economic policies are working and we should "stay the course" with them.
Considering how little McCain knows about the economy and how confused he still is about Iraq/Iran (100 years? Sunni's? Shiites?) this fall is going to be very entertaining:

There won't be elections in Iraq this October, just like there weren't last fall when they were supposed to happen the first time. Malicki won't risk losing. He'll find some excuse to delay them again.

Isn't this the president who kept telling everyone to live the American dream and wanted everyone to own a home? By Bush vetoing this bill, it makes me think that he has something to lose if it passes the Senate as well. Wonder which of his investment portfolios it would hurt...
I'd like to see them add something to the effect that you do not lose your home to foreclosure due to catastrophic illness as well.

I don't know how the swamp can publish these distorted and inaccurate attacks on Bush. Clearly "out of ideas" implies he had some in the first place.

Bush MAY be out of ideas, but the Democrats have NO ideas!

"Out" of ideas?
When did Bush ever have one?
