The gas tax holiday gained a powerful ally in the House today when Minority Leader John Boehner signed on to legislation that would tie a summerlong suspension to a freeze on earmarks.
"Since Democrats refuse to lead on gas prices and earmark reform - top priorities of the American people - Republicans will," the Ohio Republican said.
Economists and other critics say a gas tax holiday would do little or nothing to reduce prices at the pump, but would deprive the Highway Trust Fund of billions of dollars in revenue.
The legislation introduced today by Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the senior Republican on the House Budget Committee, seeks to offset those loses by freezing spending on earmarks - an issue on which Republicans are attempting to regain the moral high ground.
"For far too long, taxpayers have been footing the bill for billions upon billions in wasteful Washington spending that our nation neither needs nor can afford," Boehner said. "An earmark ban will halt this pork-barrel spending until Congress comes up with a straightforward plan to reform the earmark process and restore some sanity to the federal budget."

I always said the Republicans are the Party of bankrupt ideas and they happened to like one of Senator Clinton's, so they are pushing for it!! Just like the Republicans still want the privatization of Social Security, tying it to the stock market!! Our economy is in the toilet and they want to put our retirement supplemental monies into the grubby hands of Wall Streeters!!!! These are some of the dumb ideas that you can count on from the Republicans, if you vote for them!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

Obama's logic on this is extrememly flawed. He assumes that the oil companies will just pocket the difference and prices will remain the same. With the scrutiny that the oil companies are under, that would be the last thing they would do. The make 8 cents on every gallon, which is a reasonable profit. They are making record profits because of demands for fuel, not because they are evil corporate goons. Windfall profits will shoot prices thru the roof, supply will go down and the price will go up. Oh, and development on future drilling spots (outside the US, because why would we want to use our own resources) will cease or go down. It's just a lot easier to villify the oil companies than let go of your share which is rediculously high to begin with.

Forgot also to mention that the worst thing that could happen for the Democrats between now and November is any solution for the economy or fuel prices. I know that the gas tax holiday is a temporary "fix", but it would help people out. Democrats want things as bad as possible when November comes around so they can blame Republicans. So look for no solutions to help you anytime soon from the Dems.

We knew the Republicans would come out to support it cause it would cut funding to more roads and bridges and make gas go up not down. But not to worry Iraq's roads and bridges are doing great I guess that is all that matters also the Democrats will not let that pass because they have to worry about the november 4th election and supporting it could hurt their chances of gaining more power. We need to start getting this economy back on track everyone knows this is a recession accept numnuts in the White House he is unamerican for doing this to our troops. We need to have a safe withdrawal of our men and women over 4,000 dead enough is enough it is time to bring them home and give them the homecoming they deserve.

Oh, Yes! One big earmark is SO morally superior to a bunch of little ones!

Good. Now how about we end the gas tax permenently? Come to think of it, how about a tax cut across the board for corportations and individuals?
We're now approaching 50% taxation rate on the average American when you add up state, local and federal taxes, all the sales taxes, excise taxes, fees, you name it.
To paraphrase: We've looked in the mirror, and we've become Sweden.
Make the gas tax cut permenent now! And don't stop there. Keep cutting taxes across the board.

So what will everyone do with that $35 that you will save over the summer from the "gas-tax holiday"?
When the "holiday" is over, you couldn't even use that $35 to fill your tank.
This thing is a joke. Pander with a capital P.

Earmark Reform and gas tax suspension does succeed in one regard, diverting attention from real issues: e.g. entitlements, cost of the Iraq occupation, etc.
Things that would actually affect the budget.
1) the only way entitlements are ever going to be reformed is for someone with courage to put everything on the table--yes that includes Veterans Benefits. This would take leaders will to risk getting eaten alive by both AARP, as well as the Veterans lobby. I
've yet to see a leader willing to take such risk. Instead they'd rather wrap themselves in the flag, talk about what we owe our vets/seniors. The end result is that entitlement remains a a pipe dream.
2). Ending the Iraq Occupation. We haven't been getting the results the President promised--okay they were pretty farfetched, but still.
From the constitutional perspective, if Congress wants to prevent its war power delegated to it by the U.S. constitution from being usurped and improperly exercised under the guise Presidential Commander in Chief, it might want to do something--see cutting funding for Iraq occupation.

There is more than enough money for our roads and bridges, the problem is the States divert that money to other porposes. The bridges and roads in my state are Very good. That 35.oo that i will save this summer will go into my Mutual Fund, that happens to be invested in energy stocks(OIL).
How much does the American Oil companies pay in taxes? They are taxed at over 35%. That would suggest that the U.S. Government is also reaping record high taxes.
