Remember Rudy Giuliani?
Erstwhile front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination?
The former mayor of New York, who left the race with a high measure of grace following his stunning bet-the-bank Florida defeat in January, had some things to say about current events today on FOX News.
On Scott McClellan's new tell-all book about tthe Bush White House:
"You get $27.95 per a book and the fact that we're talking about it, just probably sold 10,000 more copies of the book." (He got the price right, by the way.) "This happens all
the time, and I think it's going to be written off as a disgruntled former employee."
Never mind that events like the release of McClellan's accusatory book, the work of a longtime administration insider, don't happen all the time.
Giiuliani spoke with Steve Doocy on Fox and Friends today.
What, Giuliani was asked, does John McCain need other than someone who is younger than himself in a running mate.
"Well, I think John needs somebody who can bepPresident, first of all, because he can't have any question about the possibility of anyone taking over in an instant,'' said Giuliani. "Knowing John, it will be who he's comfortable with the most, who will make the best teammate. ''
Pretty good chance that won't be Giuliani.

Whether you like or dislike Guliani you cant argue with the results. Same thing as Bill Clinton. Guliani turned NY from a dangerous place that was avoided like the plague to THE best city in the world. Business thrived under him in NY. HE cleaned up Central Park and the entire Manhattan area.

Mark Silva seems to write with an attitude!! Gee...would liberals refer to this as "propaganda?" Hey Mark Silva...what makes you believe we would have forgotten who Rudy Giuliani is? Perhaps liberal bias in the media? Would you ever begin an article with "remember John Edwards?"

Oh Joe grow up! And Vinny, if it weren't for Bill Clintons more cops on the streets initiative NYC wouldn't have gotten so much better. I am from NY and have to say I don't recognize it anymore. The East Village is one big Yuppy land now with no diversity or hint of its original arts and music atmposphere. So many landmark buildings under Gulianni were desroyed for newer sterilized buildings with no charachter. New York City is just one big shopping mall now with nothing to diferentiate it from any other major city around the world. So ya while it may be the safest city in the world it no longer has the edge and bohemian quality it used to have that made it unique.

Anyone remember when market forces brought Adult Entertainment to Times Square where it thrived for years? Then "small government" Ghouliani disrupted the market forces and tossed them out. This is Modus Operandi for hypocrite Republicans, businesses should be de-regulated unless they are business they don't like and states rights means the states have the right to pass laws the RNC agrees with.

Do we really care what Mr. 911 thinks?
Posted by: Mike | May 29, 2008 11:25 AM
I certainly care what Mr. Giuliani thinks but no one cares what Mike thinks.
Posted by: Mary | May 29, 2008 11:35 AM
Another "weigh in" from "Mr. Nobody is paying any attention to me anymore." Great authority and credibility in anything Rudy G. says.

McClellan outs his former friends for $27.95 a pop. Guiliani will lie to anybody anytime free of charge. What a guy!
Posted by: Tom O | May 29, 2008 11:38 AM
Hey Mary maybe you should chat with Donna Hanover and ask her how she felt when her then husband Rudy outed his affair and decision to divorce Donna ON NATIONAL TV before even discussing it with Donna or his children first! ya what a guy! Republican family Values at its best!
Posted by: Scot S. Blakeley | May 29, 2008 11:58 AM
@Vinny -
What an excellent testimony to the delusions of NYers to think that "no hookers in Times Square + a clean park [novel concept] = best city in the world". Here's a newsflash: NY isn't even the best city in its timezone.

I really don't have too much respect for Rudy Giuliani. He's been married three times and has a son that wants nothing to do with him. So much for his membership in "The Party of Family Values." Ha! What a farce!

I notice Rudy 911 doesn't dispute McClennan's assertions. Perhaps Capt. 911 is bucking to be George W. McCain's veep candidate. Where better to flaunt your 911 resume than Fox?
Posted by: Chris | May 29, 2008 12:13 PM
Hey Vinny, by the way, I loved you in "Welcome Back Kotter", if Rudy was so good for New York, why is he out of a job? Here in Chicago we need a dogcatcher, can you call him for us?
Posted by: Jack | May 29, 2008 12:14 PM
Everyone praises Giuliani for what he did with NYC, but it's Bloomberg who should get more credit. Giuliani abandoned the city when it needed him most.

you people have a lot of time.

Ghouliani is a hack!

Rudy was a nightmare. Most of his cronies are now under investigation or indictment. There were alot of factors working to clean up the greatest city on earth, not just Rudy.
And anyway, his kids hate him.
Posted by: ARC | May 29, 2008 12:51 PM
Rudy could'nt stand for someone else getting some attention I guess.
Posted by: marc | May 29, 2008 12:56 PM
Giuliani was good for NY but only in that he didn't kill the golden goose: this was the tide of baby-boomers returning to big, exciting, cosmopolitan cities. The educated, money-making classes commit white collar not violent crime. That plus the aging and incarceration of the criminal element and the adherence to the physiology surrounding "broken window" syndrome made NY what it is today.
On the point regarding the McClellan book, he's, of course, on the wrong side of history but the right side of sucking up to McCain, showing what a loyalist he can be.

Let's see who do you believe a politician like Giuliani or a ex employee of the White House?
I would take the ex-employee..
Posted by: Vince | May 29, 2008 1:39 PM
Mr. 911 = $$$ speaks.
Go away il Duce'.
Posted by: C.Morris | May 29, 2008 1:52 PM
Oh, so now it's Bernie Kerik's great buddy coming in to bash McClellan! Still someone who lacks ANY credibility whatsoever. First it was Ari Fleischer, then Karl Rove, then Rumsfeld, now Guiliani.
I'm eagerly waiting "Scooter" Libby's rebuttal.
Posted by: Jim | May 29, 2008 2:00 PM
Who cares what Guiliani thinks about the book or its author?
From what reviewers are saying, the book says very little that wasn't already rumored or discovered long ago.
I suspect Mr. McClellan is merely trying to cover his tail with a paper trail.

Listen, everyone who abhores the hypocrisy that conservative
radio puts out on an hourly basis pieced the story McCllellan put together years ago. No surprise. For Scott this will cover his you know what and add to the McCllellan family wealth. For the rest of us we keep scratching our heads wondering why Rebublicans aren't upset about being duped! And why they keep showing an alliance with the GOP. I guess the old saying is true. All stupid people are Republicans.

Did you mean High Level of DIS-grace? I perceived Guiliani campaign to be a complete disaster. He looked like a complete fool during the GOP debates. Who cares what he thinks, the american people have spoken.

Some of the comments here are so 'over the top' had to respond. Lived in metro NYC area since 1980. So RG was married 3x - what has that got to do with his outstanding performance as Mayor? Why all the Republican family values hate mail? Fact: but for RG, NYC no where near the model large city it has become in so many ways. Mayor Bloomberg is a consolidator of what RG did - Bloomberg or most anyone could not have fought the battles against so many entrenched interests (e.g., NYC failed education establishment - which mainly fails the poor). Most of the reflexive GOP-haters here with absolutely no open mind do not know RG cleaned up massive corruption that choked NYC economy, small businesses & city svcs. Fulton Fish mkt, interior construction fixed-bids - building trades cleaned up - a very big & difficult effort, waste hauling, organized crime & political corruption, restructured NYC Hospital & Health Corp to be apolitical & focus on service versus patronage dumping ground, improved police with Ray Kelley - poor families have decent safer neighborhoods (guess not as cutesy 'bohemian' and trashy as before & as some would like), cleaned up panhandling & enforced minor criminal activity to break cycle of lawlessness in NYC, and on and on. But of course, no one can be objective about Republicans (who nationally forced Clinton to reform welfare-how soon we forget) for the many open-minded here. I used to be very liberal in my earlier adulthood before I woke up to the 'group think' & adolescent peer pressure aspect of liberalism where self-infatuated people who think they are intellectuallly superior believe that they can design gov't programs which they can direct which generally do not work but which make them feel good, or they clearly benefit from versus helping any intended group of citizens.

Hey Jim, I'm not disputing the work RG did in NYC.(Great choice to locate the Disaster command center in WTC7) What insight does he offer about the White house? McClellan was a long time Texas associate of Bush. I trust his insight more than some 'no-it-all new yorker'
Posted by: Hawk | May 29, 2008 3:02 PM
Hey Jim could you tell me where these lucky families are living in New York? Obviously not in Manhattan thats for sure. I left my $2,400 studio apartment 10 years ago, I cant imagine what it costs now. ya Rudy did such a great job cleaning up NY, sure he did it all on his own.
Posted by: Scot S. Blakeley | May 29, 2008 3:03 PM
This from a man who has squeezed every possible cent from the tragedy of 9/11
Yeah Rudy, you're a credible voice on someone else's exploitations.

Note to Jim of NYC: when you finish Giulian’s hagiography, try on the concept that anecdote does not equal empirical evidence. It doesn’t matter how many instances you cite, he couldn’t have accomplished anything without the money of the affluent and the entrepreneurial who were buying into the idea of NYC at the time and who continue to do so now. Giulian was an egotistical and competent manager and nothing more.
Posted by: Jim A | May 29, 2008 4:12 PM
Addendum: while live in metro NYC area (& NYC itself) since 1980, grew up in Chicago (Oak Park-River Forest) area with family still there. Let's be clear & honest, Chicago is one of the most politically corrupt spots -not just in the US - but in the world (I always laugh when we lecture other countries about democracy & rights - when most places on earth have more democracy than Chicago) . Folks who say it 'works' because of the 'machine' are avoiding a very unpleasant look in the mirror. It 'works' at what cost with so many honest people corrupted, ground down or ruined? Please - stop all the viciousness directed at RG or Republicans when there are so many glass houses from where you throw stones. A challenge to all: > didn't 'machine' at last minute force out lifetime local Democratic candidate to switch in Barack, very unfairly? And I give tons of respect to Sen. Obama compared to the hack & idiotic Durbin. From my direct experiences, NYC at its worst was never as corrupt as Chicago - and its a much bigger city. NYC's hugeness alone is one criteria why RG should be considered one of the greatest Mayor's ever in USA. I may not have voted for RG for Pres. but any one really objective cannot deny that he changed NYC for the better - especially for the all the boroughs of NYC and the less well-off versus just Manhattan Greenwich Village types & corrupt Democrat hacks (yeah, I just stereotyped - maybe that is wrong but I am trying to shortcut here) . I used to be a Democrat until gradually realized the Republicans are the lesser of 2 evils. At least they reformed welfare & passed the 60s Civil Rights Acts (thats right - go count the votes as Illinois Republican Sen Dirksen, a great Sen. led the effort while many Democrats voted against them - was Byrd in the Senate then?))

I wonder if he got interupted by another annoying cell phone call??? 911, 911, 911. Blah, blah, blah. I'm shelling out the $27.95 to support this great American Scott McClellan!!! Obama 2008
