You know the Democratic presidential campaign is dragging on into its twilight days when Elisabeth Kubler-Ross is brought into play.
But there was Republican pollster Matthew Dowd this morning on ABC's This Week psychoanalyzing why Clinton is staying in the race and why she's making mistakes like her RFK gaffe.
"I don't think we can underestimate the emotional arc that she has to go through," Dowd said. "She is losing a dream. It's like any loss you have in a family. She's gotta go through these stages of grief obviously," which he listed as:
1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Sadness
4. Bargaining
5. Acceptance
"When she gets to acceptance," he said, "then she can rationally look at the race and figure out what she needs to do to help the party."
"In order to say to yourself the dream I always, I've had for many years, is over--whether it's in a relationship or a political campaign--it's very, very hard," Dowd said, "I think she's gotta get through that. I think that's why some of these comments happen because she is having this internal turmoil about what she does."
So, Swamp denizens, which stage of grief do you believe Clinton is now experiencing? Is she like Cleopatra, the queen of da-Nile? (Come on, it's Memorial Day weekend!) Is she angry?
And bargaining and acceptance? Is that acceptance of the vice-presidential nomination?

Comments
I think she is in stage six ..having an internal dialogue about running as an independent .. and scaring the bam spam camp into early stages of anger denial etc etc

she's still in denial. So we have a long long way to go. She is the most ungracious loser I've ever seen in my life. Reason enough why she should not be president of the United States.
All those criticisms that people have been levelling at her for years have been borne out in the last few months.
Her latest wishful thinking tops anything I've ever heard from a candidate in my lifetime. It should have kneecapped her, but because she's a Clinton, she's largely been given a pass. And instead of her campaign staff exhorting her to apologize profusely, they are irresponsibly enabling her. Have you heard Howard Wolfson and Terry McAuliffe this morning? Actually BLAMING Obama for fanning the flames of this comment? They've all gone off their rocker. Unconscionable.

The pundits seem more eager to force Clinton out of the race than the voters do. Consider this poll result from Rasmussen:
"As Barack Obama inches closer to formally wrapping up the Democratic Presidential Nomination, the number of Democrats who want Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race has declined. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 32% of Democrats now think Clinton should withdraw from the race. That's down from 38% who wanted her to exit the race just ten days ago. A month ago, 34% thought she should leave the race.
...
An earlier survey found that 29% of Democrats say she should run an Independent campaign for the White House. Clinton supporters are evenly divided on the question.
As for Barack Obama, 23% Democrats say he should drop out. That number has remained quite consistent through all surveys on the topic."
That's correct. Obama has all but wrapped up the Democratic Presidential nomination and 23% of Democrats think OBAMA should drop out. The Clinton-should-drop-out faction is larger than the Obama-should-drop-out-faction by only 9 percentage points!
Pretty pathetic numbers for the front-running "New Messiah".

Hillary has to get past her super-sized ego before she can begin to address any of the stages of grief. She is still living in her make-believe world that she can be President.

She's been stuck between denial and anger since Iowa.

Hillary has the political equivalent of multiple personalities syndrome. As such she is capable of being in all 5 stages at once.
Her RFK assassination comment was preceded by how she was supported by hardworking, white people which was preceded by a fictional account of facing sniper fire in Bosnia. Every politicians has her/his gaffes (Obama's elist comment, for example) but Hillary is a personification of a gaffe.
As a fellow-woman, I'd appreciate it if she leaves the race and quit giving us a bad name.

She's past Denial (how dare he take away my entitlement!) with fits of Anger (it's everyone else's fault that I am losing) and the first moments of Sadness this Friday (oops - I screwed up). However, Hillary is currently full-force into the Bargaining stage (let's redefine losing as winning!).
Swannie - be careful what you wish for. The only ones worried should be her supporters should she go to "stage six" and become politically marginalized as a third party. She could, of course, play that quite well as the Victim Candidate - I will grant you that.
Bruce - blah, blah, blah. Of course everyone is fine with her staying in the race - if only to take away yet another excuse for her to play the victim. But even Governor Paterson, her long-time supporter, is saying "enough" if she continues to make an idiot of herself.
Meanwhile, Obama is NO messiah (that's what I and many of his supporters like about him actually) - but I do look forward to voting for him in November!

The problem with us here is that it would take her few years to just go thru the 1st stage DENIAL.

" Bruce ", no complaint about the Rasmussen Report, since it serves your purpose, unlike the Stepanopoulos show. I am glad that you found some partisan journalists that support your objectives, regardless of the lack of " non-partisan journalist "!! At least you are consistent in you allegiances !!

This is an amazingly biased article.
But then--the Trib picked Bush over Gore, Bush over Kerry.

This is rude, not even worthy of a response.
This post is sophomoric, not merely childish.
It is not just mean, it's misogynist.

Don, your first two sentences contain two factual errors. Rasmussen is not a partisan journalist, is not even a journalist. Rasmussen is the name of a POLL. People who don't know that shouldn't comment on current affairs. And learn how to spell Stephanopoulos before you post about him.
The pundits, and other Obama supporters, must think the New Messiah is vulnerable, to judge by their frantic efforts to force Clinton out of the race.

What about the stages of grief for long-time womens' rights supporters? Mrs. Clinton has harmed our cause.
Clinton is one name that I would prefer to have absent from national politics for a very long time.
I was offended by Mrs. Clinton's comments during her husband's campaign in '92. I was unimpressed with her approach to her supposedly cherished cause of health-care. I was disgusted at her moves to establish residency in, and then run for Senator from, a state that she knows nothing about. (Yes, I'm a native New Yorker.)
I am really disgusted, though, at her negative campaign and at the fact that she has cried misogyny when the only misogynic players in this game have been inside her own campaign.
We will someday have a female US President, but if my vote really does count, that female will not be Mrs. Clinton.

I think she's at stage seven... pulling everything you have out of the box, no matter how rotten it is.
Tuesday is stage eight. The end.

Poor Hillary! The more she stays in the race, the worse she shows her childish and desperable behavior.

I saw the dudes on This Week (Ch 7) throwing this out this morning. Why does the MSM think they should deal the cards??? REPORT THE NEWS DON"T TRY AND MAKE IT! Hillary should stay as long as she can. Would any man roll it up before he feels it is over? No WAY!!!

Interesting how Hillary and her dwindling supporters attack the media and Obama for their own shortcomings. Hillary remains stuck in denial, unable to accept that she has lost and it's the Democrats who are hoping she will bow out gracefully. Rush Republicans are hoping Hillary will stay in . Like Bush, Hillary will stay the course no matter who she hurts.

Hillary can stay in as long as she wants because it doesn't matter at this point. Obama needs only 49 more delegates to secure the nomination. He'll pick up at least 30 in the last three primaries. He's only 19 superdelegates away!

First let me say,,I am for Hilary,,Obama has no agenda,, He running on nothing more than Corporate Media hype,
Every seems to be caught up in this Barack Obama Magic show. since the media is pushing Hilary out ,, and certain democrats, then 75% to 80% Hilary voter will do what Obama supports said they will do,, Obama support seen on CNN and Msnbc saying if obama don't win the primary, they are going to vote for McCain, well since then Between certian Democrats and Corporate,,, there already a campaign of Hilary supporter,,
Even if Hilary decide to back Obama, up to 80% of hilary supporter will not vote for Obama or flat out vote for McCain,
I voted for Hilary and no matter what, I will not vote for Obama and better yet, I will not waste my vote, I will vote for McCain, I do think America is ready for a black President, Not Obama, and better yet ,, Obama voter now are saying if you don't vote for him it Racist, I am not going to Obama because he is a Fraud, No more No Less, Not because he black or white, just because on every single one of his debates He could not answer a hard question for the simple fact they gave them to Hilary,, not only that, everything Hilary said she was going to do, Obama Agreed, with her every single time,, and uses her way on his campaign, Obama needs the other half of Hilary Votes, to win against McCain, and that is a fact, ,,,, Remember if Obama supporter can say they will VOte for McCain if Obama don't win, then guess what All Hilary voter are uniting and doing the same thing,, what goes around comes around,

Obama cannot make the frightful mistake of selecting Hillary as running mate.
He would cast a pall over his administration from the start, right when he wants to communicate freshness and a new start. She represents bitterness and an ugly style of politics.
And she and her sleazy husband would be looking over his shoulders, and second-guessing him, constantly.
Besides, she adds no strength to a ticket. She is extremely disliked by all Republicans and more than half of Democrats.

Hillary is actually on stage six: Destruction.
If she can't have the nomination, she'll destroy the party in a festival of bitterness.
