While there is plenty of speculation that a Barack Obama candidacy would turn usually reliably Republican Virginia into a presidential battleground, a poll released today by Virginia Commonwealth University suggests presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain would start the general election campaign with a clear lead.
The university's Commonwealth Poll found 44 percent of the state's registered voters prefer McCain against 36 percent who prefer Obama.
Hillary Clinton does not fare any better. If she is nominated, 47 percent said they would vote for McCain, against 38 percent for Clinton.
The poll is based on a survey of 852 registered voters contacted from May 12 through May 18. The margin of error is 4 percent.

Virginians must like massive debt, deficits, wars, foreclosures, incompetence. You have to wonder about people like that.

Jeff, the next time you want to go bashing Jim Webb on here make sure that you sign up for the military yourself beforehand, ok?
John McBush won't win Virgina, Jeffy, I'm willing to bet you all of the money that you have in that top 1% bank account of yours the one that benfits the rich doughy Republicans like you.
John McBush didn't win the Repub nomination because he was a great candidate, he won it because he was the "best of the worst" of a terrible slate of Republican candidates. It's kind of like winning the best personality award at a beauty contest.
Johm McBush's numbers will go down when the Dems actually finish the process of picking a candidate, which they will be doing soon, heck, I'm surprised that the Dems are as close as they are in Virgina right now considering that the nominating process is still going on.

I think he also leads Senator Obama in " questionable conduct " citations from the Senate Ethics Committee, in 1991. I hope he doesn't contact Mr. Keating, part of the Keating Five, and ask him to be his Treasury Secretary !! Unfortunately, that idea is no worse than having Rummy as Secretary of Defense, but that is the Ridiculous Republicans and their Ineptness !!

Virginia must like war and deficit spending. Unreal.

Jeff,
You've got a lot of nerve to call a decorated combat veteran a turncoat.
Senator Webb is a great American who has served his country with great distinction - what have you contributed - besides being a QWERTY Chicken Hawk Chairborne Commando?
Goof.

Bridgette, he CAN and he WILL.

The writing is on the wall. The Democrats will go down to a historic defeat this fall because of their delusional fantasy that the obama is the messiah. By the end of this campaign even Democrats will agree he was their political anti-christ. The obama cannot win based on all polling and electoral college maps. He will lose in dukakis-size proportions. Ironically, Hillary can win in this favorable Democrat climate. But Democrats are living in a fantasy world and don't see the winner they actually have. I will drink a toast to the stupidity of the Democratic Party at the McCain inauguration.

Knock yourself out, Mark! You deserve it, after all that divisiveness you have entertained over the course of these primaries !! We deserve the leaders we vote for and I think you will get another Incompetent in Senator " Questionable Conduct " McCain !! I know you will help him rescind the Roe vs Wade law and then you can have some more champagne !!
