David Axelrod, chief strategist for Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign, says the campaign is "willing to go more than half way'' in a compromise with Sen. Hillary Clinton in the seating of Florida's and Michigan's disputed delegates to the Democratic convention.
"We are open to compromise,'' Axelrod says in an interview airing on National Public Radio's All Things Considered this evening.
"We are willing to go more than half way,'' Axelrod tells NPR's Michele Norris. "We're willing to work to make sure that we can achieve a compromise. And I guess the question is: is Senator Clinton's campaign willing to do the same?"
The Clinton campaign has accused the Obama campaign of not yielding to agreements that would seat some or all of the disputed delegates in the two states where Clinton carries a surplus of delegates -- having won more than Obama in Florida's uncontested Democratic race and having run without competition on Michigan's ballot.
"Well, obviously, any compromise is going to involve some give, and that means if there's something on the table, we're willing to consider it,'' Axelrod tells NPR. "That may include us yielding more delegates than perhaps we would have, simply on the basis of the rules."

Dear Fellow Americans,
Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America
is facing and will face very critical and substantial
"Challenges" in coming, months, years, and next
decade[s].
It is very essential as well as critical that we pick
our next
President keeping in mind the following criteria.
1. A candidate who has a clear and candid " Vision
and Mission" for our Nation.
2. A candidate with " Strong Character and Stable
Integrity" in-spite of adversity during our present
election process.
3. A candidate with sound and sustained
"Presidential Temperament" and " Judgment".
4. A candidate with little "Washington exposure"
and "real connectedness with people and future
generation".
5. A candidate who "Inspires us up" rather than
"Tears us Down".
6. A candidate not based on sexism,
racism, regionalism, and ageism and as well as “
attempts to bring us together “
In my professional, political and personal opinion,
the only candidate that meets the all above
characteristics and has shown constant and consistent
coolness, calmness, and connectedness { PRESIDENTIAL
TEMPERAMENT } is Senator Barrack Obama.
As an independent registered voter since 1980. I voted
for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First Bush,
and second Bush in 2000 and In the process last
interest in Washington politics and I stopped voting.
Getting disinterested and disgusted in our political
process and stopping voting that was a very bad
decision in any circumstance, particularly under
present circumstances.
This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and
let "Washington" stay the same.We can not afford our
Greatgreat Nation to become less than what we are,
what we were and what we can be?
We need to send clear, careful and candid message to
the world and some time 24 hour partisan divisive
media,
that WE the American people will set the agenda for
our future and America will be back.
These partisan media outlets are trying to deprive,
dupe, and derail us and our Nation in getting it right
this time. We not let it happen this time or in
future.
Some of these partisan media and pundits are trying
their best
to deny us better future and continue focus our
weaknesses and generate bitter future for us and our
Greatgrand Nation. { Our Greatgrand Nations people
are persistently and constantly subjected to this
Psychological Terrorism" without common people’s
knowledge. The
common and regular people do not have time to see
thru and sort thru this psychological terrorism
perpetuated
by some of these partisan media outlets. I find it
tragic, unfortunate, and sad [ Probably they do not
care about our Greatgrand Nation ].
We the Americans should not and would not to allow
Some these partisan media outlets psychologically
terrorized, traumatized and silence us this time or
any time in future.
I am sure that we will get it right this
time and elect Senator Obama our next President.
Let us remember that our Greatgrand is constituted of
family, friends,fellowships, faith, funds,foundation,
fun, and future with fairness and freedom and without
fear, favor, or failure .
We can not afford to lose any of above. Let us stand
up, be counted, save, build our Greatgrand Nation for
centuries to come and regain our world economic,
moral, and power status back.
God Bless our Great grand Nation and its diverse
people.
Our Greatgrand nation needs present and future
stability, security, safety,sustained progress and
restoration of our due status in this perilous Global
World at the all levels.

Are you saying that in your judgment Obama will be a good president?
And why should your judgment be valid when you admit that you voted for Carter, Reagan, Bush 1 and then Bush 2.
I think I will stick with Hillary.

I'm sorry COL but if your track record stinks! Based on your record one had better think twice about voting for your choice!

Now as for Obama agreeing to compromise on FL and MI. We all know what he considers compromising. A 50/50 split and when Hillary does not agree, and should not agree to such an unfair compromise he will make it out to be that she is not willing to work on the deal. However, a 50/50 split would do nothing to allow the voters of FL to have their voices heard, 50/50 is not how they voted. So, everyone needs to realize that what Obama will agree to will only be what is to his benefit and not to the will of the people.
You can expect this kind of compromise from him if he should get to the whitehouse, all lopsided in his favor and not the will of the people.

Very funny how the Dems both disenfranchised two big states, and now are trying to put a facade on now that they want to count those votes. The Obama has the delegates and nomination all but wrapped up, so now he has a sudden interest in counting votes in Michigan and Florida? Give me a break phony. I'm a McCain supporter, but I would take Hillary over this media created politcal hack.

RFB: What Obama says is ALWAYS the will of the people (even if the people don't know it yet.)
Posted by: JB | May 21, 2008 5:51 PM
by law no one was allowed to campaign in FL and MI. the only candidate with true national recognition because she was a former first lady was Hillary Clinton. so the election that took place with no campaigning by the other only serves to benefit Clinton and give her an unfair advantage.
you clinton voters are wrong to say they should be seated as is. if you truly beleive in fairness then you know what I'm saying is true.
those who are so pro-clinton or pro McCain would love to see an unfair seating even after they are told the facts of why the election was not a real election. the only fair thing that should have happened was a real election for those states. it was the state's election committes (not any of the candidates contrary to the lies that have been said) that have stopped a real election from happening. the state's legislators were the ones to cause this problem insisting on an election date they knew was not saunctions and told would cause their delegates not to count. at the same time when they had an opportunity to make things right by holding a second election THEY refused to pay the cost when it was THEIR fault.

I love how Hillary continues to fight for the votes in Florida (and Michigan) stating every vote should count, but in her fuzzy math, she eliminates all those who live in caucus states. If they can't help how their state participates in the election process, how can we then allow people who live in Florida and Michigan, who's legislative branches (both Democrat's and Republican's) voted overwhelmingly to proceed in a fashion that they KNEW would disenfranchise their votes, to be counted?
Both campaign's agreed to the rules BEFORE the process started, but now Hillary wants to change the rules! Amazing
Posted by: KP | May 21, 2008 6:01 PM
Now wait a second, isn't Mr. Obama now advocating to break the rules?
Why is it ok, if he does it, but not if anyone else does it?
Posted by: None of the Above 08 | May 21, 2008 6:06 PM
the actual voters are the ones paying the price or the lost of their vote - they did not set the election date - not fair to them - people talk like the voeters had direct control over this event -- they did not
Posted by: seattleguy | May 21, 2008 6:13 PM
mike - you have your facts completely twisted.
neither candidate "disenfranchised" two big states, the states "disenfranchised" themselves by moving their primaries up despite clear and unambiguous warnings from the dnc that doing so would invalidate their primaries. hillary and obama had nothing whatsoever to do with that decision. if anything, hillary has contributed to this problem by being the ONLY candidate to not remove her name from the michigan ballot despite admitting herself that the primary would not count.
as for florida, neither candidate campaigned there - at all - and the results are purely a reflection of name recognition. every poll shows that obama does much better in states after he's campaigned there and people get to know him. thus, the florida results are totally skewed and do not in any way reflect what would have happened if the candidates had campaigned there.
i also have a feeling that you would not call obama a "media created political hack" to his face. but it's safe to hide behind your computer screen and launch petty ad hominem attacks without using your full name, isn't it?
Posted by: chad_broski | May 21, 2008 6:14 PM
Back when the decision on Florida and Michigan was made it was just fine with Senator Clinton and her supporters on the DNC voted to block the seating of the delegates thus selected. The Clinton camp is now faced with defeat and wants to change the rules (again and again and again). It would be unfair to punish those Democrats in Florida and Michigan who declined to participate in the primary vote that had been rejected by the party and which all of the candidates declined to campaign for.
Both states should now be permitted to send non-voting delegations to the national convention.

Dear COL.[retd] A.M.Khajawall M.D.
First I have very serious doubts about you having been in the military. Why? Because that is not the way you type your signature block in the military. It is A.M.KHAJAWALL, COL (RET), MC, M.D., USA is the correct signature block, and a Full Bird Colonel would know this.
As for the rest of your statement, I sincerely doubt that you even have a M.D. Your writing is that of someone that is just out of High School. Incoherent, and babbling. Your use of brackets rather than parenthesis says it all. A Post Graduate with a M.D. would know better.

What is to compromise for. Clinton won both states. Oh, that's right, it would hurt Obama if they were counted correctly. Well, we can't have that can we. Forget about the voters in these states. They don't count! They mean nothing. So what if it is unconstitutional.
Posted by: Darkwater | May 21, 2008 6:49 PM
Voters who don't vote deserve what they get. Even if the party says your vote isn't going to count, it DEFINITELY won't vote if you don't cast it. Everyone knew there was a chance that the delegates would be seated. Obama decided to leave his name off the ballot because he assumed that nothing would change, when everyone in politics know that everything is able to change.
Funny how not even a month ago he didn't want to even think about letting the delegates be seated. Now that he's in the lead he feels he can be generous but only if they split the votes. Please. Do what the voters voted for and let them count as they stand.
And just for the record. Obama is a talented speaker with nothing to back up his words but air. He's not once tried to explain his words or give an example of how he'll change. He just promises change. I'm tired of promises with nothing behind them. And he wouldn't have gotten so far if the media hadn't been behind him and not behind Hillary.

Chad_Broski, The DNC did disenfranchise their voters. They allowed IL to move up the primary to help the Obama out, but wouldn't allow Michigan and FL to move up theirs? C'mon, Chad that's definately disenfranchising voters. Why allow IL to do it, but not those two states? You are telling FL and MI that they have to play by different rule than IL, just because IL is Blue state. They wanted the Obama to have a state where he could get a big win in to pick up momentum early on, and they knew that idiots in this state would 1) vote overwhelmingly Democrat, and 2) vote for a candidate from IL just because he is from IL. FL and MI are swing states, so they have to play by different rules? Basically you are telling voters, since we didnt get to campaign here exclusively your votes don't count.
And I absolutely would love to tell the Obama that he is a media creation and nothing more to his face. Then watch him run away and cry like the baby he is because I said something he didn't like.

I live in Michigan and wish that Senator Clinton would stop trying to speak for us, Michigan voters. I hold my elected representatives responsible for breaking the rules of the DNC, not the candidates. The majority of us in Michigan and Florida understand this and will vote in November. Let's move on and get over it.
Posted by: Rita Lou | May 21, 2008 7:10 PM
Compromise?
Michigan and Florida Democratic parties broke the DNC rules, so those primaries are void and no delegates count.
According to the rules, then, there should be no Michigan or Florida pledged delegates at the convention.
Why can't Obama and Hillary and the DNC follow their own rules. And if they can't, why should anyone take them seriously?
Either hold a binding primary or enforce the rules and don't have Florida and Michigan at the DNC convention.

If Hilary wants a new election, then she should give her campaign another loan and pay for it.

Maybe if you lived in Michigan you may have a better understanding of why Mr, Obama choose not to have his name on the ballot . In the spring of 2007, he came to Michigan bad mouth the auto companies, know well he would not do well in the primary decided to take his name off the ballot. His supporters then just before the primary , via newspapers told the public to vote for Obama via uncommitted. He still lost the primary. He will do anything to have the nomination even if it means to disenfranchise the Michigan voter, and in turn come to Michigan begging for their votes in November. He is a contradiction of facts, meeting with leaders of terrorist states, wearing the flag pin, and now the delegates of Michigan and Florida. You may trust him but there are many that do not.He is a unknown from Chicago, who went to the US senate, just to run for President. It is the unknown about him that eventually will be his down fall!

I will never vote for Obama. Not only does he get a free pass on everything from the media, the comments from his wife and pastor show that he associates with a crowd that is bitter and is not proud to be American. I don't need the leader of my country to think that.
While Hillary is not my first choice, I will take her anyday over Obama. A Clinton/Bayh ticket would be great for this country. It won't happen, though, because St. Obama can do no wrong, including this paper and the Obama Sun-Times.

Will Frank James be next?
The left has decided to start screaming about media bias against Barack Obama to cover up the fact that most reporters are, in fact, in bed with the Obama campaign.
More proof of that came out today. Former ABC News correspondent Linda Douglass, who was until very recently at National Journal, is going to the Obama campaign as a strategist.
But, but, but, Linda Douglass interviewed David Plouffe after the Pennsylvania defeat for a major media organization.
How much are you willing to bet she tailored her interview to help the Obama campaign? I'd bet lots. In fact, I have no doubt she willingly helped the Obama campaign spin its way out of that disaster. She's going to be a campaign strategist for Obama, for God's sake.
This is really pretty serious. Douglass has gone over to the Obama campaign totally, instead of staying in the media. We can expect her to pull out her rolodex and stroke the necks of reporters not fortunate enough to get a job on the campaign, but who want one in the Obama administration.
Posted by: Jeff | May 21, 2008 9:03 PM
I should think he would be willing to go more than half way since Clinton won more than half the votes.
PS: No, I don't trust Obama. He is a mirage.
Posted by: Catherine | May 21, 2008 9:15 PM
I don't really think either candidate has anything to say about if or how the FL and MI delegates are seated. This is a DNC issue.
The two states should not direct their ire at the DNC, but rather at their legislatures who moved the primaries in violation of the DNC calendar. I have heard and it's probably true that the FL voters got railroaded by the GOP, but again, the problem is at the state level and should be dealt with in the next elections in each state.
I do think both states should be allowed to be at the convention, but they must be sanctioned in some manner. To let them be seated as is will set a precedent for the next election - states will be holding primaries and caucuses beginning around Halloween.
The rules probably should be changed, but that is a future issue, not for 2008. The DNC sets the rules and it should be the DNC that settles this issue. The candidates have too much at stake and should defer. It may actually help with party unity later, although that is a prospect that seems to be growing dimmer with each passing day...

I think this candidate for President was right. Of course now that she is losing she does want those votes to count!
Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton said it would be foolish to take her name off Michigan's primary ballot and sacrifice her chances against the Republican nominee.
As the only top tier Democrat remaining on Michigan ballot, Clinton is all but guaranteed to win the state's primary. Michigan is tentatively slated to send 156 delegates to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, but national party officials have threatened to take away those delegates if the state persists in holding its primary on Jan. 15.
"It's clear, this election they're having is not going to count for anything," Clinton said Thursday during an interview on New Hampshire Public Radio's call-in program, "The Exchange." "But I just personally did not want to set up a situation where the Republicans are going to be campaigning between now and whenever, and then after the nomination, we have to go in and repair the damage to be ready to win Michigan in 2008."
Posted by: Paul | May 21, 2008 10:29 PM
When Michigan officials decided to move up the date of their primary, they knew that doing so would invalidate their votes.
Neither Hillary Clinton nor Barak Obama had any say in the matter and Barak Obama's name wasn't even on the ballot, only Hillary Clinton's.
How in the world can Sen. Clinton now claim that votes for her should count in the national primary?
As for Florida, officials there also knew that moving up their primary date would invalidate their votes. While both Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obamas' names were on the ballot, only Sen. Clinton campaigned in Florida.
Remember that Sen. Obama did not campaign in Florida because the Democratic National Convention rules dictated that Florida's votes wouldn't affect the national primary, due to their changing their election date.
So, of course Sen. Clinton now wants these votes to be counted... she was the only name in one state and the only one to campaign in the other! It hardly seems fair to change the rules now. Given the circumstances, perhaps the only fair way to count the votes in Michigan and Florida would be to hold a new, DNC approved primary election in which BOTH candidates have time to campaign and in which BOTH candidates to have their names on the ballots.
Posted by: Julie | May 21, 2008 10:32 PM
Hillary first agreed before the primaries that Mich & Fla would not count. She was the only person on the ballot in Mich so naturally "she won" since it wasn't even a real primary. Typical Clinton cheating to later claim "she won" Michigan. She DID NOT WIN MICHIGAN!!! There was no one else to vote for!!!
Posted by: Reality | May 21, 2008 11:02 PM
Why does Obama have anything to say about this and why is anyone listening to him? The dnc democratic party should decide and if they want this to be a real and fair election they should let all the votes be counted the way people voted! 50/50 would not be fair, the people who voted in Florida and Michigan are not responsable so all their votes should count 100% and the delegates should all be seated too! Otherwise this would not be a fair election! What happened to what was said about the votes in the election Bush -- Gore? They said every vote must be counted to make this a fair election. Same holds true here, EVERY VOTE MUST BE COUNTED TO BE A FAIR ELECTION!!

RFB: Gimmie a break!
The will of the people? How can a vote represent the will of the people if one of the candidates isn't on the ballot? How can a vote be representative if a candidate doesn't campaign?
I'm reminded of the previous and upcoming votes in Zimbabwe. Its a sham vote. How can you count it fairly?
Posted by: Realist | May 21, 2008 11:26 PM
I don't trust HRC. She is a chamelion that assumes the position she needs to. At the moment, we are seing the "populist hard working white" HRC. It seems to be working for her. She is a fake. Obama - concede nothing short of 50 -50 in Michigan & Florida till you are the nominee. She convienantly does not mention her people voted to sanction both these states in the beginning. She is not fit to govern whether man or a woman.
Posted by: Okie | May 22, 2008 12:26 AM
Hillary's average margin of victory in delegates in all of her victories was 14.
She should be given similar margins in MI and FL, giving her 197 more delegates to Obama's 169.

What do you Clinton supporters consider a fair compromise? You want to count the Florida vote as is? Hillary won Florida with 50% of the vote. 47% went to Obama and Edwards. She'd pick maybe 10 delegates more than Obama. How about Michigan? Hillary got 55% of the votes in Michigan but she was the only major candidate on the ballot. Does that mean she deserves all the delegates or 55%? I'd love to know what Clinton supporters think is a fair split for Michigan.
Posted by: Tom O | May 22, 2008 1:48 AM
Most thinking Americans know that in all parts of life from early on upto being adults, one must abide by the rules set down -- and now Clinton Camp must abide by the rules set down when they signed the initial agreement about Florida and Michigan! That is the way we have law and order in America! It would be unfair and unjust to change the rules for the Clintons now, therefore they should work out some kind of an agreement that would be FAIR, that is if the Clintons know how to play fair, but they continue to take the low road!
Hillary is whining. But not only is she whining, she is distorting the facts. Clintons made a big deal about Barack whining and it was Bill Clinton who said "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." I think they should take their own advice!

I love it Axelrod says we'll meet Clinton halfway. Say what B Hussein Obama never campaigned in Florida or Michigan and now you want spoils. Amazing but then you are socialist Democrat candidate so not a surprise here.
What I love about Obama he is going to bring us the same malaise that Jimma Carter wrought. The only President in American history to bring us a misery index.
Obama parrots Carter. We can't keep driving around in our SUVs and setting our
thermostats at 72 degrees year round and eating all we want and expecting other nations to say Okay. Now that sounds Carter esque.
It was Jimma who palled with the Arabs gave us Islamic Jihadists instead of the Shah of Iran.
Long lines at the gas pump after he rationed gas and banned gas sales on Sundays. Just what a super power needs to make a profit.
With interest rates at 22.5 percent under Paul Volcker during the Carter reign, the real estate industry collapsed. Thank God the Gipper beat him for his second term or we would still be in a malaise. Obama you will be a rematch of the Jimma Carter years! No thanks. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Susan, the conspiracy that the "GOP" is the cause of the DNC not seating the Fla delegates is nonsense. The Fla House vote was unanimous and the Senate vote was something like 37-2 to move up the primary. That is called overwhelming bipartisan support.
Florida Dems can blame themselves, and the horrible leadership of Howard Dean, with his ever changing stance on seating the delegates (not going to seat them, we will seat them, let's have a re-election but we don't want to pay for it, let's split them proportionately, etc.) It's my belief that Hillary's last straw is the resolution of FL and MI. If that had been resolved months ago like it should have been, I have to believe that Clinton would have dropped out by now. Only the DNC could possibly blow an election by being dumb enough to alienate voters in two swing states. Watching Dean's "leadership" is like watching a car accident.
Posted by: Herbie H. | May 22, 2008 10:01 AM
Dean is doing a great job. He pushed the 50 states strategy which has Democrats challenging and winning seats in what Republicans once thought were safe districts. They are spending millions defending seats they thought were a lock.
Dean will end up seating delegates from Florida and Michigan, but he'll do it after the nomination is decided, just as the Republicans did. I think he's taking the right approach and the whining from righties only reinforces my opinion.

No responses on what Clinton supports would call a fair split in Michigan and Florida? 50/47 FL and 55/40 in MI? 60/40 for both states? Whatever it takes to give Clinton the nomination?
