The Swamp

by Mike Dorning

Barack Obama offered a vision today of his top priorities during the first 100 days of an Obama administration that won't be much of a surprise to anyone who has been following his presidential campaign.

Asked about the first 100 days of a hypothetical Obama administration at a fundraiser in Denver, Obama said he would focus on interim progress toward three key goals: troop withdrawals from Iraq, health care access for all and action on energy and climate change, according to a pool report of the fundraiser.

On Iraq, Obama said, the public should expect within 100 days of taking office he would convene the Joint Chiefs of Staff to devise a plan for withdrawing troops from Iraq.

He also set a goal of proposing legislation on his promise of affordable health care coverage available for all quickly upon arriving in the White House. "We need a bill...by March or April to get going before the political season sets in," Obama said.

Obama also promised to take early action on energy and climate change. "We will have to be immediately prepared to send a signal to the world" on alternative energy, he said.

For good measure, he added that he would rapidly proceed with a review of all executive orders imposed by the Bush Administration and consider overturning them.

"I would call my attorney general in and review every single executive order issued by George Bush and overturn those laws or executive decisions that I feel violate the constitution," Obama said.

First hundred days of what??

"I would call my attorney general in and review every single executive order issued by George Bush and overturn those laws or executive decisions that I feel violate the constitution," Obama said.

Wow! so laws will be overturned, based on the messiahs "feeling" about their constitutionality?

How exactly does a president "overturn" a law?

Doesn't he need... oh whats the name.., yes, yes, here it is...doesn't he need the supreme court to make that whole "constitutionality" ruling decision?? Or does the god complex apply here?

do you even know what an executive order is heartburn? It is not a law.

I believe the customary way was at the side of a hospital bed.

Travis-

So when Obama said
I would overturn those LAWS and executive orders- did he mis-speak, or was he taken out of context?

Or are we to ignore the word LAW in is statement- like you apparently are?

burnheart,
Being the curious type I googled the words you used in this post and wouldn't you know it, you lifted them directly from a political site:

heartburn...do you not even read? He said he'd overturn executive orders that do not jive with the Constitution (Law). Executive orders are not law, but policies that have been practiced by the previous president to set a president that has unbalanced the powers of government.

I wonder if he plans on visiting all "57 states" in his first 100 days?

bill r and Travis H,
"heartburn" is one of those Wingers who fancy themselves as a know-everything, smart guy...isn't it fun to pull on his chain?!?!? :o)

No- he didn't say that- his quote is below- he specifically said he would overturn laws OR executive orders .. meaning both.. ( at least in English)..

I have added his quote to provide you more ability to parse..

And, as expected, when things get a little tough for you , you call for help.

I will leave you alone now... thanks

heartburn,
Executive order = law???
When can we expect an apology for your careless reading of what Obama said?

I would ask Congress to re-institute the Draft. Watch how fast that Boondoggle in Baghdad lasts, with the rich and famous having to sacrifice something for the outrageous lifestyle they have enjoyed these past years !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

The first thing I'd like him to investigate is why Oil Companies have closed 24 refineries in the US since the Clinton Administration. Could that additional refining capacity have prevented the price of a barrel of crude from skyrocketing to present day levels?

I will leave you alone now... thanks

Gee, no more words of "wisdom" from GOPer land headquarters?

What will we do now?

As soon as the messiah clarifies how he will, from the executive branch use his "feelings" to determine the constitutionality of a law .

I understood what he meant, and wasn't deceived by his reference to "laws." He couldn't have been thinking of executive orders and "laws" at the same time. He just has a bad habit of using the wrong word-symbols to represent his ideas.

And, yes, as President - assuming he becomes President - he would have the power to countermand and nullify any prior executive order for any reason, and not solely those he views as unconstitutional.

Having said all of this, I find it mildly ironic that Obama would even think about the Constitution. His idea of federal power is entirely foreign to the frame of government set up in the Constitution. His idea of a bill for "affordable health care coverage available for all . . . ." is a good example of how he honors the Constitution in lip service, but not in substance. The Constitution doesn't give the federal government the power to legislate on national health care coverage - period. The power to protect and promote health has always been an issue of State law, and considered one of those powers reserved to the States by the Tenth Amendment. It would be a stretch of the "interstate commerce clause" and/or (non-existent) "general welfare clause" to enact such a health plan - beyond any exercise of federal power thus far. This is especially true since health care, in general, is not a commercial venture, and neither Obama's nor Clinton's plans seek to spend federal money on people in general. Thus, such plans couldn't pass Constitutional muster even under the Democrat's perverted interpretations of the Constitution. So much for consistency.

Constitutional orthodoxy among Republicans and Democrats is a sick joke. John McCain, for instance, wouldn't know the First Amendment if it bit him on the backside. Thus, I generally doubt his ability to evaluate any law for its constitutionality. Obama, Clinton and their ilk, on the other hand, have no conception of the limitations on the federal government found in the Constitution. That's why issues of constitutionality normally boil down to whether one party or the other chooses to honor some part of the Constitution in the breech. What a mess.

I wish he'd have mentioned submitting a balanced budget to congress. Democrats always have to come in and clean up the Republican's fiscal messes.

I knew somehow someone would put the blame on Clinton. Thanks JUSTASKIN! Perhapsyou should be askin your current president this why the cost of gas has risen. has nothing to do wiht the refinery closings back in 96 you dote!

"The messiah"? you mean that Republican President of ours who sits in the oval office and makes the "hard decisions" only after he speaks to god?
That guy?

John W,

So, what do you think of Bob Barr?

John W,

So, what do you think of Bob Barr?

Posted by: John E | May 28, 2008 5:48 PM

That's a good question. I don't know what to think of Bob Barr. I only know that he now stands for positions that are at odds with those he once held as a red-meat Republican. I suppose some of those changes can be attributed to growing wiser with age; and, then again, maybe not. I am not as certain as the delegates that nominated him at the Libertarian Party convention that he is a good banner carrier.

I also know he doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting elected. The Libertarian Party doesn't have much of a government track record. Aside from a few state offices and one house seat, Libertarians are no-shows in politics. As such, most people don't understand their platform. When the news media tries to describe them, their positions often get misrepresented. Thus, Barr is destined to get the 3 percent that goes to Libertarian candidates - and no more. He is a non-entity in this race.

Obama also promised to take early action on energy and climate change. "We will have to be immediately prepared to send a signal to the world" on alternative energy, he said.

Normally I understand the democrat code words, but can't follow this. What kind of signal will he be sending? Will it be a smoke signal? Is it really necessary to clear every thing that we intend to do with "the world"? Who are these people, "the world" people, that is? Friend or foe? Or does it matter? Is this Leadership, Jimmy Carter style?

If Obama doesn't drill for oil and help us build reineries we ar going to be paying $10 dollars a gallon after his first 100 days.
This Obama is a out and out socialist with Marxist leanings he will ruin America.
Pray now for no Obama days much less 100! Jerry White, Springfield, IL

We have a GREAT Constitution. Thanks for the well done effort to explain why the fix that liberals would impose on us for the temporal issues of the day, is so problematic for us. It only affects our personal freedom, the space between legitimate Government affairs and our own, our personal assets, the free market's ability to fine a good balance between needs and provided services, etc. That's all. Nothing probably all that important. democrats will never get it. They want laws / executive orders / decrees to fix everything, irrespective of something sombody started in the 1770's.

I do c d headlights of an oncoming freight train. Am extremely thankful for 4 guys named Roberts, Thomas, Scalia, and Alioto. Long lives to them, I pray daily. Thanks John W.

It is amazing to me the % of our society that appears to be knowledgable or privy to what goes on with our government. I think we need to start with ourselves so we can be good citizens taking care of ourselves and family. We are an unhealthy society that seems to blame everyone else from their neighbors to our government for anything they can think of. Neither candidate will be the best or worst choice. I believe we will be fine either way due to the foundation of this country. No doubt we will have challenges. I still live here by choice and I bet you do as well. I say go live somewhere else if you do not like this country. There are plenty of choices and plenty of countries that will welcome another person..... if you behave.

Heartburn - Executive orders have the full force and effect of laws - but are not laws passed by Congress. They are enacted by presidents and can be overturned/changed by future presidents. Political Science 101.....
