The Swamp

by Rex W. Huppke

MUNFORDVILLE, Ky. -- Mike Rife is white, a semiretired factory worker with a high school education and a 2-foot-square sign on his lawn that makes friends and neighbors flip him the finger as they drive by.

The sign reads: "Obama for President."

"I think I almost know what it feels like to be a black guy," said Rife, his voice gravelly and defiant. "I take heat every day. I got an Obama sticker on my car, and I catch hell for it."

Munfordville is the seat of Hart County, a rural swath of Kentucky farmland. Its Democrats will vote, and vote hard, for Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's primary. And if Barack Obama goes on to win the nomination, many of those Bluegrass State Democrats say they will vote against him quicker than you can say, "Race doesn't matter."

"They won't vote for a black man," Rife said of the people he has lived around all his 57 years. "That's all there is to it. They just can't bring themselves to do it."

A walk around this central Kentucky town of 1,600 supports Rife's opinion. Whether in the Dairy Queen or the dollar store or along the sidewalks of a courthouse square ringed with shuttered businesses, people speak freely of their dislike for the lanky senator from Illinois.

Terry Jordan, 47, who runs a year-round garage sale in front of an old filling station on Main Street, put it simply: "It's his color."

"Terry Jordan, 47, who runs a year-round garage sale in front of an old filling station on Main Street, put it simply: "It's his color."

"He's all Democrat, all Clinton and, if Obama wins the nomination, all for Republican John McCain. He doesn't trust Obama, has serious questions about the Muslim rumors and truly believes a black man will not survive long as president of the United States.

Jordan claims there's nothing Obama could say that would change his mind."

And these are the people that Hillary Clinton is embracing warmly. These are the people she is so proud to have the support of. These people are the basis of her "electability" arguement. These are her allies. She should be ashamed.

I have to agree Lois. I was watching interviews with Kentuckians and old man says "stop being so black". Ties in nicely with the GOPs Wright controversy and plays on their fears and ignorance. These are the people we want to let Clinton use as an argument?

Hillary is appealing to the lowest common denominator in Kentuckey. I'm from there, so I know! I'm voting for Obama here in the great state of Illinois.

Racism still exists in America. Republicans say I should be proud.

This is what the GOPers who rant and rave about Wright don't understand. In their small world (which is all they care about) they disingeniously believe racism doesn't exist. They know full well it is alive and well. I heard Lou Dobbs once say that 99% of Americans aren't racists....what universe do they come from? Instead of concern and having an open dialogue, they wish to deny reality and blame the blacks for "overreaction". Plus they will use this to their benefit in the race. Shame on them.

Lois, This isn't Hillary's fault. There will probably always be a few people who won't vote for a black man just as there are probably some people who won't vote for a woman. Obama isn't going to win over everybody.

But these voters will have to make a decision in November. Will they really vote for 4 more years of Bush so they can get a president with a pale complexion? I'm guessing quite a few will close the curtain tight and vote for the Democrat even though he's a black guy.

Why not ask all the black voters who won't vote for Hillary Clinton the same question? How's that not just as bad?
Bill r. is getting crazier by the day if he thinks Lou Dobbs is a republican.

Voting based upon race alone is repugnant and shouldn't be tolerated. But I'm sure that the 93% African American vote the Obama garners is based upon something entirely other than race.

But the differnce is that Obama has never made a claim that blacks would leave the party or vote for McCain in November if he's not the nominee a part of his claim on the nomination. Hillary has. She made the choice to make ignorant hate filled people like Terry Jordan part of her "electability" arguement for getting the nomination.

Ask the 93% of black Democrats who vote for Obama whether voting by skin color matters.

And note that in the above article, the people leveling the "race" charge are OBAMA supporters.

Are you guys that thickheaded that you can't understand the pride blacks feel? Talk about out of touch. Geez..it's clear why the country is in the pits with you at the helm. Jeff...never said he was republican..I said he was wrong. Plain and simple.

Is there racism still in America? Sure. Is there racisms of one form or fashion all over the world? Yes. Is racism rampant in the U.S.? No, not even close.
Some dingy reporter can always find a racist somewhere, whether it's in the hills of Kentucky, the bayous of Louisiana, the inner city in Chicago or the newsroom of the Chicago Tribune.

You've asked if I being one of the 93% who voted for Obama did so because of his skin color. The answer is no. I didn't vote for Jessie Jackson or rally behind Al Sharpton because I didn't think they had what it took to be president of the United States. African American's care about this country and we wouldn't just vote for some unqualified person just because they happen to be black. I would only vote for the person who I believe can make the changes needed to keep this country strong.

Bill you used it to back up your statement that "this is what the GOPers who rant and rave about Wright don't understand."
Here's what YOU don't understand. We know racism exists and we know it's not confined to one color or race. We saw it every time Wright opened his mouth on TV. You can say all day that everyone voting for Obama is doing it out of "pride" but it won't change the fact that every voter makes up his or her own mind. James Carville was right about the rampant Obama supporters. They won't be happy until there's election censors quizzing every voter for the other side about their motivations and intentions while conveniently ignoring the full deck of race cards their own candidate is playing.

I'm not to worried about states like WV and Kentucky voting against Obama because he's black, states like this are usually the same states that are filled with people who vote against their own self-interests (Republican) every Presidential election anyway.

You can't do anything but laugh and hold out hope that they will get a better education someday so that they will be better able to make a more informed decision with their vote in the future.

Who's quizzing whom? Bruce wants to know why 93% of blacks support Obama. Maybe you can post what the candidate himself has said that leads you to this conclusion. Not Wright, not a supporter, not the media, but the candidate himself.

Every democrat from any of those states that don't always follow what the messiah says (you too Indiana and Iowa)should look at John E's post and recognize that this is what the people propping up Obama truly think of you. You're uneducated and misinformed because you don't agree with them. That's the audacity of hypocrisy.
I love it when they let their arroogance go unchecked.

No thanks, Bill, I'll go with what the man THE CANDIDATE OBAMA called his spiritual mentor said. The man who married Barack and Michelle, the man whose pew Barack Obama sat in for 20 years, and who baptized one of his children. Or as THE CANDIDATE said of him "I can no more disown him than I can my own white grandmother" only to disown him a week later.
As for the quizzing part, I was quoting what James Carville said on ABC News. Here's what he had to say about the picture the Obama supporters (aided by proBama media like Diane Sawyer) are painting of Clinton's voters:
DIANE SAWYER: I want to talk about the fact that 20% of the voters coming out of the West Virginia race said race was in fact a factor in their vote, and of those Senator Clinton won 84%. Here's my question: should Senator Clinton say she is rejecting the votes of anyone who votes based in any way on color of skin?
JAMES CARVILLE: Well, I don't know. She certainly should not be a part of any kind of campaign or anything like that, but I have no idea honestly, how do you, do you have like a, does Senator Clinton have like someone out in front of every voting place, and like, quiz people, or put them under a lamp or something like that?
But a candidate can't go to—there are a lot of people that vote for Senator Obama, I'm sure, based on race also. Should we not let these people vote? Of course we should.

It's time to oranize a write in campaign for hillary.

"The Messiah"?...you mean like the Republican President that it's in office right now?...the one YOU VOTED FOR?

The guy who doesn't have to bother to listening to what foreign leader have to say because he claims he can read their minds by looking into their souls?, or the guy who says that he talks to god before he makes the "important decisions"?

Jeff, You're frustrated that the low information voters in states like this that the GOP depends on to vote for them every election are starting to leave the flock, aren't you?
